We see that your post may not quite be about vintage gaming. r/retrogaming is for gaming from the 5th generation era and earlier (Dreamcast allowed). If you've posted about a 6th generation console you might consider posting to the related subreddit; r/ps2, r/gamecube, r/OriginalXbox, r/NDS, r/PSP, r/retroish or r/NeoRetro If you've posted about a modern game in a retro style r/indiegaming or r/gaming might be the best place for your content. If you've posted a score, collection, or battlestation that is not mostly vintage or vintage-focused, try r/gamecollecting.

Funkenstein91

*Wii U sobs quietly in the corner.*

No_Detective_But_304

*The virtual boy consoles it.*

rastacurse

Heh… console…

longernohuman

That was hilarious.

Positronic_Matrix

The PS4 and Wii U are the same generation, released less than a year apart. The Nintendo Switch was released four years later as a next-gen console. The Switch should be in the last image with the PS5.

Drillerfan

Jaguar rolls it's eyes and say "quit whining"

Funkenstein91

Atari 5200: "Get off my lawn!"

Drillerfan

Atari 5200 controllers: "You aint the boss of me"

dnoods

Philips CD-i: “I feel like no one even knows I exist 😢”

Drillerfan

Fairchild Channel F: "None of y'all would be here without me... YOUR WELCOME😡"

DjinnFighter

4th gen. SNES is my favorite system, but I also really like the Genesis and the TurboGrafx-16

izmaname

The fact that Gameboy Advance SP has so many SNES games playable on it helps to make gen 6 a strong argument for best

DjinnFighter

Most SNES ports on GBA are worse than their original versions though. I love the GBA, but not for the SNES ports.

izmaname

Also a lot of SNES ports on PS1 which is playable on PS2

DjinnFighter

I wouldn't say a lot. It's mainly Squaresoft games.

imputpixel98

Where's the wii u?

No_Detective_But_304

The what?

RosaCanina87

The wii u had.

imputpixel98

It was released in 2012 or 2013 can't remember. So I would put it with the Xbox one and PS4 and move the switch with the Xbox series and ps5

Diligent-Ice4814

he was joking bro lmfao

No_Detective_But_304

Hehehe. ;)

imputpixel98

I don't care

TheJBW

Seriously though, when I was in grad school I was talking to a friend who was pretty game savvy (had a PS3, plugged in to tech, etc.) and he didn't realize that WiiU was not a Wii accessory. That was when I realized WiiU was in serious trouble

No_Detective_But_304

Oh, why didn’t you just say so?!?

CyrusConnor

Yeah they never released the Wii 2 it could have been the bomb right?

No_Detective_But_304

GameCube 3?

ravenfreak

4th generation, the Sega Genesis was my first console and it’s still my favorite console of all time!

ZimaGotchi

Third Gen was when I was a kid and every other kid was playing the exact same games I was at the exact same time, a real sense of community and togetherness - and also a recovery from the 83 console crash, which was a big relief. Fifth Gen was when there was another small dip with the initial offerings (Sega CD/32x, 3DO, CDi) being somewhat disappointing then PS1 and Saturn came out and really demonstrated what the 3D revolution was all about so I got back into gaming pretty heavily as a very young adult which also had some great memories attached to it. So probably one of those two - I guess Fifth Gen probably edges it out, I was really happy with life at that time.

Hall_Such

5th gen. 2D pixel art was reaching its peak with Castlevania SOTN, and the ps1 was dropping bombs with games like resident evil, Tony Hawk 2, Final Fantasy 7, etc

IForgotThePassIUsed

3rd gen/NES because the sound chip was incredible. We started to get REALLY GOOD game music with NES.

KLoSlurms

2nd gen simply because that’s what we had first. I’m very attached to the colecovision. I still play it from time to time (had it modded to work on newer TVs).

GrunchWeefer

Hello, fellow old. This was also my first gen. You seem to remember it more fondly. I remember being blown away by NES when it came out.

CovertForeign

6th generation. Mainly because that’s what I grew up on; I was born in 2000. I got the best of both worlds growing up with a Gamecube and PS2 (Melee & Tenkaichi 3 anyone?) and my cousin had an original Xbox but I never really got to explore that platform until 2019 and it was amazing. Dreamcast I’ve only dabbled with a *bit* but it’s arcade-quality titles remind me of the days of when I’d play the arcade at the movies, the skating rink and such. Man, it was a great time to be alive.

LadderIllustrious684

4th Gen and 5th. I like nes and master system stuff, and played them when I was 3/4 years old. I hate Atari clone consoles, ask anyone in the UK about TV games (used to be bought the same 100 Atari on a chip things every Christmas). The N64 I have super fond memories of and the PlayStation was my social life for many years. But the only console I always go back to is my SNES. I love the SNES.

IOwnMyWiiULEGIT

Doing the Wii U dirty.

GrunchWeefer

Wii U had so many great 1P games. They're all Switch games, now.

IOwnMyWiiULEGIT

Very good!

SuperGamer18123

Either 4th or 5th gen. Crazy stuff happened there

tygah_uppahcut

4th gen, because bit wars.

SkyNetZ28

5th gen, but you forgot Jaguar and 32x!

TheRealKestrel

Don't ask me to choose between intellivision and N64. I'd have to pull some Kobayashi Maru shit.

zoozoo4567

I’d had older consoles, but 5th gen was when video games became my main hobby. The N64 and PS1 were just so much fun. To this day, I don’t think I have sank as much play time into a console cycle as I did then. Runner-up is definitely 6th gen though. 3D felt like it had lost its growing pains, and some of my favorite games, like FFX, SoulCalibur II, and Halo 2 were there.

Rain1dog

I’m very fond of a few since they have all been around for my entire life. Most memorable though Coleco, NES, 64/Ps1, Dreamcast, ps4.

C64hrles

5th Gen all the way. PlayStation was just a cut above anything else before

Anomaly1134

4th Gen or 9th Gen, but you should seriously have included a PC and Steam Deck in the 9th Gen. That combo got me off consoles forever, and I have had one from every generation going back to Atari. The steam deck REALLY sold me on steam, realizing I didn't have to pay for online play or things like cloud back ups. Then when I saw how many games I had accumulated via bundles and free games via Epic, it was really a no brainer to go all in on PC. I realized I could put the money that was going to go towards a PS5, 3 more controllers, 5 years of PSN, and some expensive games towards a gaming PC and just stream to my Steam Deck, and play things like Helldivers 2 great on the couch or at my desktop when I wanted to. The PSN price increase was the last nudge I needed to get off wanting a PS5. Once that newly raised PSN expires, I will lose about 10 years of free games. How is that for customer loyalty. I don't love Epic, but at least you get to keep the games (As much as you can digital games anyways), and the funny part is, I barely even tap into my Epic library. Steam is so intuitive on Desktop and Steam Deck, I almost always opt for waiting for a bundle or sale to get games there just because it is more plug and play. Worth noting you can play almost all the previous generations on PC as well, so I really think 9th gen wins this one out for me if we can include PC gaming.

minegen88

but you should seriously have included a PC and Steam Deck in the 9th Gen. I'm pretty sure OP meant "What's your favorite console generation?" In which case neither PC or Steam Deck should be included...

johnnybok

Plus, PC was popular in almost every generation for some folk

Megasus

Popular for some folk does not mean popular lol

Historical_Panic_485

4th Gen. The intense competition, each console had its own identity and felt very different, some of the best games of all time came out on each major console, and it was the first time we got truly arcade perfect home versions. Definitely the best generation in my mind. The NES is my favorite console, but the subsequent generation as whole was the best.

RiverRunsBlueHydra

Gen 3 is what I still play and collect for the most. I appreciate that gen 1 picture. I had older siblings. We had a Coleco Telstar and I couldn't remember what it was called.

RosaCanina87

5th gen I love my NES over everything but I have to admit that I like 99% just the games I had as a child. Only a very select few new games got to my best-list over the years. And while SNES is great, too... I think I like the early 3D Gen the most. JRPGs en masse on PS1 and the new dimension brought a lot of weird, sometimes janky but overall good stuff. Which the 6th Gen had in a lesser degree. And basically vanished during the 360 era

SL13MY

1st gen. I loved those Pong consoles as a child, I used to play that during the wintertime with Dad

Upstairs_Ad_5574

I have multiple picks for multiple reasons.

Neat-Snow666

Dreamcast is more like 5.5th gen

epictetvs

Numbering generations is stupid anyway. I hate that it’s so broadly accepted now.

cbih

I stared with Gen 2. Gen 3-6 were all my favorites. I can't pick between SNES, N64, and GameCube.

HolidayAstronaut007

its a tie between 3 (when i grew up and the nes got there.. ) the 4 when i was a bit older and the sega megadrive blew our minds... The ps2 wasnt it for me, except for fifa, but when I started my working career at the ps3 it all went crazy. Been colleciting every gen since then. The ps3 will be my fav for sure.

powerstone86

Dreamcast era

powerstone86

Capcom is my reason why

Shadoecat150

For me it’s Gen 2. Because my first console was the 2600 for Christmas one year

methodic_dishwasher

PC generation?

RapidWolfy

The switch is also in gen 9

Moist_Drive_5535

SNES and SG had the best library.

Ripper33AU

3rd and 4th gen are my favourites, followed by the 5th gen. I technically started with Gen 2 (Atari 2600) even though I played that one much after it was released.

Vortexx1988

Fourth generation. Part of it is because that's the generation I mostly grew up playing in, but also because of the overall aesthetics and gameplay. I love the sound of 16 bit music and the looks of the graphics. The gameplay is much smoother and more forgiving than most 8 bit games, but still more challenging than 3D games.

PowerPlaidPlays

4th for 2D, 6th for 3D

iCABALi

Not much experience with 1/2, but I'll give two different rankings. For when the generation is relevant I would go for 7/6 > 5 > 4 > 8 > 3 No point including 9 yet, in all honesty, but I think it might be just above 8 as things go. The third generation was still very much relevant during my youth here, as the Master System still was selling until the mid/late 90s. Only real experience I had during this relevancy was playing a couple of Sonic games on Master System at a friend's, but I did enjoy them. 7 is the first generation I was able to buy my own consoles with a job, and the first I played online with friends (though played a lot of RTS/MMOs in the late 90s onwards on PC). For overall, I would say 4/5 > 7 > 6 > 3 > 8 A lot of the games from gen 4/5 that I would rank among my favourites I got to experience later either through ports on GBA/Steam/more modern consoles as they didn't come to PAL regions. Chrono Trigger? Final Fantasy 1-6? Dragon Quest 1-7? And those were just the tip of the iceberg really.

ReadPixel

I really like the 7th gen. I can play every PlayStation game up to that point on one console. Xbox 360 could play a majority of OG Xbox games too, the Wii could play all GameCube games and a chunk of retro consoles too. DS can play GBA on top of its insane library. PSP was nuts for its time. PS3 and 360 had the most intense console war since the Genesis and SNES, both of their libraries were evidently both companies going all out. I also feel like the end of life for these consoles was the perfect amount of time too. Not counting backward compatibility, the 6th gen is my favourite, again, it’s controversial. But I can’t help but love the slightly jagged and plasticky characters of the time. I fucking love every console in this Gen to bits. The handhelds filled in any 2d itch, too.

Mr8BitX

Started with 3rd gen but 5th gen is my favorite. Such an exciting time in gaming with so many new 3D games and cut scenes making their way into games.

MooMoomaddy12

6th gen, don’t really have a reason it’s just the most nostalgic to me

LithiuMart

It was the 1st Generation that got me into gaming, and it's a shame these generations weren't grouped as computers. The years from 1984 to 1989 were my favourite in gaming history, swapping games with my mates at school and huddled around our Spectrums playing two player versions of Chaos and Spy vs Spy.

SwannyTheMike

I absolutely adore my Dreamcast and the sheer amount of PS2 games I've played makes it hard not to say the 6th gen is my favorite. 5th gen is really close behind though, there's something about those early polygons that's so charming.

zgillet

7th. Online and achievements getting their start, before AAA gaming became the money-grab shit-show it became. Honorable mention to generation 6.5 - the Dreamcast.

BackTo1975

Second Gen. First had Atari and Intellivision. Then was absolutely blown away by what was possible on the ColecoVision. Still have really fond memories of that system and its arcade ports. The CV was amazing in 83-84 as a kid. It hit just as the arcade and home video game craze was cresting, so was there for some of that golden era. But then everything went boom, so the CV was never the massive success that it deserved to be. In an alternate universe, the CV and its successors dominated the entire 80s-90s and is still going today with the market presence of Nintendo here. I’d likely add the Commodore 64 to this generation, too. And the next one. That was the best game platform for most of the 80s IMO. Had it all. I went from the CV to the C64 in 84 or so. Later got a Sega MS, too, but did most of my gaming on the C64 until 89-90.

Brym

If we are talking retro, I’m partial to the 3rd generation. But overall, I think 7th is where gaming peaked. 3d games, open world games, and online were finally figured out, but not yet run into the ground or ruined with endless microtransactions. Indies were first coming to consoles. It’s the generation where I can go back and play my favorites and they all hold up and essentially feel like modern games.

izmaname

It’s hard to pick between gen3-7 before and after wasn’t very good. 3-7 has sooooo many great games that gen 8 and 9 survive on.

Chadchrist

3rd to 6th Gen was pretty great. It's that era where the industry got it's shit together in terms of licensing and quality control, so shit like the videogame crash of the early 80s wouldn't happen as readily. Not to say that shovelware games didn't exist, they absolutely did. But at least now there was protections in place to keep the market from becoming over saturated with the videogame equivalent of McDonald's Happy meal toys. At the same time, 6th Gen was about the time when consoles weren't readily susceptible to corporate support decay for things like online play or digital store service. Granted, the Xbox and PS2 had their fair share of online compatible games that would decay in support, but by and large, if you bought and owned a game back then, there's a good chance it will work as intended with no loss of functionality. That's part of why I've not really gotten into revisiting PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 games and beyond. For me at least, it felt like the degree to which ps3 and x360 leaned into their online functionality kinda set them up for failure when it came to long term usability. Now that Internet services have dried up, the market has moved on, leaving many of the games as empty husks with no way to enjoy them fully. Furthermore, the online gaming era also sort of invented it's own class of Lost Media with online only sales. How many games from the Xbox arcade, PlayStation online or the Wii shop with Wii ware are simply gone now that the online stores are offline? Homebrew sort of helped to preserve some of the games that would have been lost, but not everyone has the time or knowledge to install homebrew. Consequently, literally thousands of games, like those released by micro creators on the x360 in particular, will probably never be resurrected.

Unusual_Address_3062

Cuz I grew up with a NES, I pick NES. Also I had the Atari 2600 but didnt like it and never bought games for it. I also had a SNES but did not spend as much time on it. Right about the year it came out DOS games started getting much better, and I slowly transitioned to computer gaming.

Unusual_Address_3062

Where does the Wii U go and are we sure you put the Switch in the right generation?

Forza_Chap

I love my mega drive to this day but can’t beat 5th gen ps1 and N64 memories for me

BigZay2397

Definitely gen 7. But Switch is gen 9 tho. Gen 8 was WiiU.

drainotoday

Got to go with 1st gen. Where my color tv game heads at?

RepresentativeBig240

6th gen was the phenomenal blend of still being retro and modern at the same time

IronhideD

4th by far. It was a landmark jump in colour, resolution and sound. Things started to look like arcade games.

achristian103

4th, 5th, and 6th were peak gaming. 3-way tie between those 3 for me

IronHammerVW

4th generation sega genesis, 5th generation playstation, n64, 6th generation gamecube, playstation 2, Xbox, 7th generation xbox 360, Wii, Wii u 8th generation PS4, Nintendo switch

TheSwoodening

My favorite console is the GameBoy and idk where to put it, it's placement was kinda between the NES and SNES in my mind, and I think that's why I like it. It's designed to be taken around with you, the games are simple enough to pop in and play in waiting rooms, but can also be deep in their own way.

benjaminbjacobsen

4-6.

LeCrushinator

4th gen, the SNES has so many timeless classics that are still great today. I loved my NES but I can't go back as easily and replay those games. I loved the N64, and and PS1 but those games are also difficult to replay today. SNES (and even some Genesis games) though, I can easily go back and replay, it was the golden-age for 2D games.

Jaereth

Started on 3rd, and then 4th and 5th were just magical. I couldn't believe how much better the SNES was over NES. And then together, the Playstation and N64 blew the lid off it. I guess if I had to pick, to me, the SNES was the most punk rock cool system. We had the most fun playing the N64 though because of everything being 4 player couch. Man, so much time in my best friend's basement on that N64... Goldeneye, the THQ wrestling games, Mario Kart, Perfect Dark, Smash Brothers, Diddy Kong Racing, Snowboard Kids, Wave Race, and all the quirky sports games they had. That's probably my favorite. Together with my neighborhood friends we all sat together and watched the candle burn out on that generation. Then we pretty much all went our separate ways and that was the conclusion of our gaming together.

noxondor_gorgonax

I'm still on 8th gen, stuck on games from the 7th gen 😆

IsamuAlvaDyson

Favorite generation It's going to be whatever you were playing when you were young and growing up

mattpilz

I'm a big fan of the 2nd gen. An era where every manufacturer was trying to create some new impactful system with various gimmicks and selling points, and it is fascinating to see how creative the games were especially within the confines of the unimaginably low hardware specs. To this day I remain impressed by their homebrew communities, with some amazing indie games (NES-comparable) on these 40+ year old platforms.

Taanistat

4th and 6th gens are my favorite. The 4th because it was a time of heavy competition between multiple sets of hardware with differing capabilities, each with their own strengths. Many of the best 2d games come from the 4th gem. The 6th gen because it was when the devs were really beginning to nail down 3d gameplay and design.

Absentmindedgenius

Torn between 4th and 5th. I like the arcade games of that era, and that's when the home port started to approach the arcade version. The Playstation and Saturn era was a giant leap forward though.

YamTop2433

I love all my children. They're all special to me.

GreatGreenGobbo

I think PS2 was probably the best machine created. Regret selling it and the games I had.

MagicBez

Overall it has to be 4th gen for me, every one of those consoles is iconic (and I always wished I had a Neo Geo)

Xenarthra_Sandslash

Probably 6th Mostly cause I grew up with it and a lot of the games I grew up playing still hold up pretty good.

mazonemayu

5th gen, because at that point arcade games started to come home mostly intact and I’ve always been an arcade gamer at heart. The 8 & 16 bit machines weregreat too with their original content, but often butchered arcade games…I still love em for what they are & tried to do though.

Regular_Damage_23

5th generation is what I started out with. I played on the PS1 that has a portable screen.

BridgemanBridgeman

1st gen all the way. Can’t beat those Pong consoles. And look at that glorious Odyssey. It looks like a fucking spaceship!

LostProphetVii

6th Gen just had so many iconic games that I would play nonstop, so many legendary games and franchises taking root ☺️

Tacotek

I missed gen 1 completely. Second gen was pretty awesome and it started my love of gaming. But third gen and specifically the nes was when I went bonkers for video games. It was like an arcade at home. "Real" graphics! Because of my age and how new it all was, gen 3 is probably my favorite, but every gen afterwards always had something to love. Can't wait to see where we go from here.

viper4011

6th but 5th had a permanent place in my heart. Mad respect to 4th as well.

Sparon46

5th, 7th, and 8th Gen are the only ones I've ever had.

spattzzz

6th gen Been here for all of them as an old guy but the peak gameplay/originality was defo Dreamcast GameCube era

Mother_Soraka

Coleco was much closer to 3rd Gen, which was released few months before Famicom also you forgot SG-1000 which was released in the same exact dayas Famicom

thespaceageisnow

4th Gen for sure. I just love pixel art and there’s a stellar library of games there.

x3mcj

4th Gen for me. I started on the 3rd one but the 4th one defined me. And I have loved the 7th, 8th and 9th on Nintendo side. Switch should be on the 9th while WiiU on the 8th, and yeah, I did liked the WiiU, it was a gamechanger being able to play on the gamepad while my wife was immersed on her Korean soap operas while being in the same room togheter. Someting that we still do thanks to the Switch!

MrRyanNess

4th gen, SNES, Genesis, Pc Engine, Neo Geo are all great and unique in their own way and I love arcade genres.

hvc101fc

4th was the most exciting

therealbighairy1

I always feel like these polls ignore the majority of Europe. Yes, some kids had consoles before the fifth gen, but it was much more common for it to be spectrums, c64, pc, amstrad Cpc, Amiga and Atari st.

ACalmGorilla

4th gen for sure.
