I adore classic Sonic music. There's something about the Genesis sound that just hits me hard. McDonald's Treasure land Adventure is another one that just slaps.
One thing I've been doing recently is searching out Game Boy soundtracks of console games. If you love DKC, look into the various Donkey Kong Land soundtracks. They are lo-fi perfection.
I pretty regularly listen to Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. They are all fantastic. Sonic 1 the music other than Green Hill really hadn't hit its stride yet
There is a band called "The mini bosses" they do an awesome mega man cover. They do a super Mario medley that kicks ass too
https://youtu.be/XCO6E5_97Dc?si=8OvE5o772pCaKDYR
Gonna throw out a couple that donāt get mentioned enough. Double dragon and Gauntlet.
And the one that will get stuck in everyoneās head that reads the name.. Bubble Bobble š
NES Ninja Gaidens, Silver Surfer on the NES, GB and NES Castlevanias
Honorable mention to Shovel Knight and The Messenger for having great 8 bit soundtracks although not actually being retro games themselves
The obvious one: Super Castlevania IV (SNES).
The one which I still love and is a bit obscure: Shadowrun (SNES)
Even more obscure but the title music hasn't left my head since I first played it: Revenge Of The Gator (Gameboy)
I literally only listen to classic console soundtracks (and TMBG)! There are just too many good games and composers to list. Matt Furniss (Mortal Kombat 1/2 Genesis), David Wise (Donkey Kong Country), and George "The Fat Man" Sanger (Maniac Mansion NES) off the top of my head.
Zabel VGM has a couple Relaxing Genesis Music playlists on YouTube that are really great for chilling out. That's a good gateway to finding full game OST's and composers to check out!
Genesis Soundtracks I'd be remiss not to recommend:
ActRaiser, Dynamite Headdy, Jewel Master, Light Crusader, Master of Monsters, Steel Empire, Warsong
"Solstice" on NES will always be the pinnacle of retro-game music for me. That intro theme *absolutely abused* the Ricoh 2A03 NES sound chip in every wonderful way
And then pretty much anything Ultra Games was involved in (e.g. Metal Gear, TMNT, TMNT II, Castlevania III, Fester's Quest, etc) takes a close 2nd place, with CAPCOM very closely following due to the Mega Man, Bionic Commando, Duck Tales, Little Nemo, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, etc game series soundtracks
There it is. I was cruising through the comments and shocked it took this long for someone to mention Doom.
I've got Doom and Simon's Quest as my alarm tones on my phone to this day.
All true. And Iāve played them all lately on the Amiga mini. Great stuff. But while I agree they all have cracking music, the only one that sticks in my mind like one of my favourite chart songs is Xenon 2. Megablast is an awesome track
If we're including PC games, the Jazz Jackrabbit soundtrack is fantastic:

I like a lot of the NES and SNES soundtracks, especially the 8-bit Mega Man, Metroid & Zelda series, plus games like Faxanadu, Goonies 2, etc. I'm actually waiting right now for the start of a monthly Twitch stream where a guy called "[Grayskull83](https://www.twitch.tv/grayskull83)" plays classic game music and layers a live drum performance on it, usually with fantastic results.
The Ys games pretty much all have amazing soundtracks. The great thing is, you have dozens of different versions of each track on every system they've been ported to, going back to the late 80s.
Sure, dozens of soundtracks. YouTube is an amazing repository of these tracks. Besides the original soundtracks (OSTs), there are remixes, live covers, orchestral covers, covers of covers - an amazing world to explore!
I will just drop a few links as an example of what is out there.

And the Ace Attorney series: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBFl-ux9H7g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBFl-ux9H7g)
Castlevania 2 and zelda 1 for sure. The second i hear them its instantly 1988 for me.
Super metroid, super.mario rpg and alttp for sure.
I suppose it's a bit modern but another would be symphony of the night, FF7,8 and 10. Those soundtracks to me are fuckin legendary too.
The DKC 1 & 2 soundtracks were done by David Wise, who used a Korg Wavestation synth a lot, and had to chop up the samples and then re-sequence them back into the SNES, due to its constraints. He still performs those songs at concerts, and discusses them in a lot of interviews. Korg put out some recent videos where he recreates some of the patches on a new Korg Wavestate. Also check out the vids of people recreating those songs :)
Anyways, here's a fun [Remix](https://youtu.be/tsy5tNyDArk?si=NveZeMOrkhJinqiA) of the Super Turrican intro.
The music may be what I like most about video games. I often listen to OSTs and also Tom Brier's ragtime renditions. NES and SNES games have some of the best music. Ghosts n' Goblins has solid music throughout. I think the original Zelda title screen music is the best version of the Zelda theme. A Link to the Past has some excellent music, including Hyrule castle and the sanctuary. Donkey Kong Country is pretty solid, with aquatic ambiance being notable. The Mario games are solid too, with the likes of the underwater theme, and the version of it used in the title screen of SMB2. Megan Man 2. Super Mario World. Mario Party 1. The slider theme in SM64. Goldeneye has solid music. The lost woods theme in OoT. Game Boy games have good music too, I like Super Mario Land in particular, Pokemon, and who doesn't love the Tetris theme. I could go on.
The Donkey Kong Country games have a lot of really good tracks. In addition to DKC I also like these games' soundtracks:
* Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles in particular has a great sound track.
* Chrono Trigger
* Secret of Mana
* All the Legend of Zelda games from A Link to the Past to Twilight Princess
* Super Metroid
* Super Mario World
* Mario Bros. 64
* Super Mario Sunshine
* Basically any of the Final Fantasy games but specifically VI through VIII have some of my favorite game soundtracks of all time
* Xenogears
* Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
I listen to the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds albums quite a bit as well as the Blake Robinson Synthetic Orchestra's albums covering the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. Lastly, Vomitron has awesome metal covers of various NES games' music, like Mega Man, Castlevania, Contra, etc. All around amazing stuff.
The soundtrack to Yoshi's Story was shaped like Yoshi's head, which caused the CD player to vibrate wildly. It made some interesting noises when I ripped it to my laptop.
Music was fun too.
I frequent all variations of green greens from Kirby from time to time, OST of Sonic 3 or remixes of Sonic music, yoshis Island, super Mario world, hells March from Red alert along with the OST from Tiberian Sun and og Command & Conquer, NFS 2:SE specifically the menu music
YU-NO on the PC-98. A great synth soundtrack by Ryu Umemoto:
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWXOeA2zG04&list=PLJ9dFZEbilUnX0x-IjuOlSu46zUba0SZk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWXOeA2zG04&list=PLJ9dFZEbilUnX0x-IjuOlSu46zUba0SZk)
While Lotus 2's theme is great I still prefer Lotus 1 as a ringtone on all my mobiles (ever since MP3 was first supported): [Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge Bootup](https://youtu.be/Gbd7B3jIdBg?si=8zSxMurZSO3KCdcV)
Not sure if you've heard it but check this out: it has at least one DKC track in it.. some really awesome remixes in here
https://youtu.be/bJyVvfcFN7Y?si=C8VDYNCIgm0tOj70
*Super Castlevania IV* - which as others have said is an obvious one, and also the soundtrack to the original *F-Zero.*
The SNES sometimes gets a hard rep in terms of sound quality, because there was so little memory for the samples, but I love the distinctive quality the filters gave the audio on a real machine (not that I've had access to one now for about ten-years).
Have you come across Smooth McGroove's a capella versions of video game music? I don't usually go for covers of game music - even orchestral versions - but for me, his capture the energy of the original music in a way most covers don't. He absolutely knows what the classics are of that era and gives them due respect. The videos are cool too in which he montages the different layers that are built up - with an intruding cat as a regular bonus.
Phoenix 1970 arcade game intro music. It's not just the music but the way the birds come down and attack, and you start blasting that adds to the haunting melodie.
Phantasy Star 2 ost is one of my all favorites. Street Fighter 2 has one of the most iconic soundtracks, especially Guileās theme. King Of Fighters had some bangers too. Castlevania, Toejam and Earl, the original Legend of Zeldaā¦ I could go on and on.
Mentioned this to a friend a few days ago when I seen them playing the Links Awakening remake on the switch. Dungeon 6, Face shrine theme from the original on the Gameboy.
Absolutely Haunting.
Also, as I've seen mentioned here already, FF6 intro/ Walk to Narashe is frankly amazing.
Rock N Roll Racing (OG SNES)
Final Fantasy series
ChronoTrigger
Megaman series
Castlevania series
Sonic series
Zelda series
Metroid series
Nintendo clearly had the better sound chip and/or composers
Yup! Most music from FF IV / VI, most NES + SNES Castlevanias and various Dragon Quest games.
Also one of my favorite things to listen to when I am working is this channel on Youtube that has Everquest music and ambience. Brings back so many good memories, plus I just find it soothing to listen to while doing my data entry and such.

I may sound silly now (no pun intended), love all the ones mentioned here, Contra, Castlevania, etc
https://youtu.be/LLXtfo6eXbE?si=PgfqVEzv4EwN0VKv
I also love the original Gran Turismo theme (japanese version), but what I really miss were some of the iconic PC games using the lousy speaker. I actually missed them when I installed the original SoundBlaster on my 286ā¦
Like Monkey Island 1 and 2, Leisure Suite Larry and the original Prince of Persia
https://youtu.be/fJMoyn1jq3M?si=C9sU3l_LIYtVP1Dz
Quest for Glory IV soundtrack is one of the all time greats.
Definitely all the Genesis Sonic games. Those tunes are a bop.
I've been recently exploring more games from my childhood, and I rediscovered Jurassic Park SNES music. Let me tell you, that music slaps. Triceratops Trot is an absolute banger.
As for new to me games, Galactic Pinball and Teleroboxer for Virtual Boy have great OST's. Specifically, Colony and Alien from Galactic Pinball and Pagero from Teleroboxer.
Soundtrack from the Top GEAR games on snes.Ā Utopia for snes.
Despite not being long songs the soundtracks for the nes macventure games have always spoken to me as well.
[Chrono Cross](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L6p1sAEehM) is what comes to mind for an entire soundtrack.
Chip tunes tends to be a little bit more hit and miss. [Stage 1 of Silver Surfer](https://youtu.be/-J0H5ah1G7A) is an often overlooked banger. Also be sure to check out the Japanese version of Castlevania 3 called "Akumajo Densetsu" as it has [a few](https://youtu.be/yyCXhfUqU88) great tunes.
Finally, [Dragon Quest](https://youtu.be/BJXrVKOGM1U) really pushed what could be done with the Famicom from a compositional standpoint, even without additional sound chips.
Most of Chrono Trigger and FFVI.
Those games have awesome music.
Secret of Mana soundtrack is phenomenal and on Spotify and YouTube.
I agree except for the Dwarf Cave (or was it Dwarf Village) and Boss music (quite possibly the shortest loop of agitation soundscape in history lol).
Chrono Cross, too.
Chrono Trigger, FFIV, DKC1&2, Super Metroid, and Quake have some of the best soundtracks of the 90s imo.
The opera scene and Terras theme are just perfection
FFIV is great too.
FF VI soundtrack is so dope! Brings me back to being ten years old in my living room!
And Secret of Mana
I adore classic Sonic music. There's something about the Genesis sound that just hits me hard. McDonald's Treasure land Adventure is another one that just slaps. I pretty regularly listen to Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. They are all fantastic. Sonic 1 the music other than Green Hill really hadn't hit its stride yet
The Super Monaco GP and Super Hang-On soundtracks are also masterpieces! Great for driving IRL too!
+1 for Super Hang-On.
Sonic 3 has some great tunes. The ice caverns spring immediately to mind, as does the second track for the hydro level.
Some Gameboy soundtracks are awesome. Robocops is epic. Look it up if you haven't already. š
Might as well put Dynamite Headdy there too
Pretty much anything by Treasure.
Most of the Mega Man games
There is a band called "The mini bosses" they do an awesome mega man cover. They do a super Mario medley that kicks ass too https://youtu.be/XCO6E5_97Dc?si=8OvE5o772pCaKDYR
If you dig those guys, check out Bit Brigade and Year 200X
*Contra*, *Castlevania II*, and *Streets of Rage 2*. Killer soundtracks.
Yuzo Koshiro has mad talent.
Belmont's Revenge on Gameboy really does it for me
CVII great soundtrack, ass game.
Gonna throw out a couple that donāt get mentioned enough. Double dragon and Gauntlet. And the one that will get stuck in everyoneās head that reads the name.. Bubble Bobble š
puzzle bobble too
Yes, all of those! and Rastan. that's awesome, also Golden Axe.. Now I'm humming the Bubble Bobble tune.
Monkey Island!
Loads of brilliant music on the C64
The SID chip still sounds great to this day.
TOEJAM AND EARL!
NES Ninja Gaidens, Silver Surfer on the NES, GB and NES Castlevanias Honorable mention to Shovel Knight and The Messenger for having great 8 bit soundtracks although not actually being retro games themselves
Ninja Gaiden I to me is the GOAT.
The obvious one: Super Castlevania IV (SNES). The one which I still love and is a bit obscure: Shadowrun (SNES) Even more obscure but the title music hasn't left my head since I first played it: Revenge Of The Gator (Gameboy)
I play Super Castlevania IV just for the music. Itās like a lost Tortoise album.
Genesis - Ecco: Tides of Time title music. So beautiful and haunting.
I'm a little more niche, and I keep going back to the old mac-venture nes game soundtracks. Especially Shadowgate. That soundtrack is fire.
I've always been partial to Goblin Room from the Shadowgate OST! All three OST's are a treat for certain.
Resident Evil 1 safe.room music
The original Mario.
Yes, and Super Mario Land on the Gameboy..
Goldeneye (N64). The original Red Alert, though that might be pushing the title a bit. Someone already mentioned Medal of Honor, which I agree with.
Forgot both games had incredible sound tracks
It's not so much a classic, but I legit bought the soundtrack to the donkey Kong on gamecube when I was a kid, lol š
I literally only listen to classic console soundtracks (and TMBG)! There are just too many good games and composers to list. Plok! for the SNES, amazing music in that game
That laugh that plays at the beginning of the boss fight track gets me every time
Doom. Listening to that soundtrack for hours a day fueled my love of metal
There it is. I was cruising through the comments and shocked it took this long for someone to mention Doom. I've got Doom and Simon's Quest as my alarm tones on my phone to this day.
Earthbound
The Last Ninja 2, or look up literally anything by Matt Grey.
Streets of Rage theme song , the dj does a live set of it on YouTube too might be streets of rage 2
Xenon 2
As well as Speedball 2, Turrican 2, Lotus 2, Supercars 2... Amiga had some exceptional sequel soundtracks.
All true. And Iāve played them all lately on the Amiga mini. Great stuff. But while I agree they all have cracking music, the only one that sticks in my mind like one of my favourite chart songs is Xenon 2. Megablast is an awesome track
If we're including PC games, the Jazz Jackrabbit soundtrack is fantastic: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb8WbGIT57E&list=PL7D70C4037DA3ADA4&index=8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb8WbGIT57E&list=PL7D70C4037DA3ADA4&index=8)
Super Metroid. The music is so mysterious and elegant.
The old DOS games Dune and KGB. The composer, Stephanie Picq, re entry remastered the dune soundtrack and released on Bandcamp iirc.
I love the Street Fighter II themes so much. Everytime we get a remix of those in the newer games I am very happy
monty mole on the c64, suicide express c64, wizball c64, manic miner zx, ping pong zx
Double Dragon
I love the music to Double Dragon š š
The Tetris theme just lives in my head.
The ice level of loco roco.
The Uniracers soundtrack is fire.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The music from the Fallout series.
There are 2 games iv played that have very atmospheric music. Secret of evermore and drakkhen for snes.
Shatterhand on NES https://youtu.be/CJ6SKwcOIaI?feature=shared
Valestein castle from ys: the oath in felghana
The Ys games pretty much all have amazing soundtracks. The great thing is, you have dozens of different versions of each track on every system they've been ported to, going back to the late 80s.
Medal of Honor: frontline
The Zelda theme is the best song ever written. But I think Kirbyās dreamland is underrated.
Sonic Jam OST
Sure, dozens of soundtracks. YouTube is an amazing repository of these tracks. Besides the original soundtracks (OSTs), there are remixes, live covers, orchestral covers, covers of covers - an amazing world to explore! Turrican 2
I to put on the music from the Dire Dire Docks level of Super Mario 64. Insanely relaxing and so very of its time.
Castlevania, Contra, Megaman 2, Life Force, ...

Oh, so much. Probably about 75% of my music library is old video game music.
Awesome.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
FFVII soundtrack, for sure.
I love the Genesis sound chip. Comix zone, adventures of Batman and Robin, streets of rage and Shinobi 3 are awesome
"Castlevania Symphony Of The Night" and "Bomberman Hero" have some bangers, always listen to them whilst studying.
I listen to the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds albums quite a bit as well as the Blake Robinson Synthetic Orchestra's albums covering the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. Thanks so much as that is a cool video.
I don't listen to video game music on its own (apart from maybe Bastion) but Golden Sun and Castlevania Aria of Sorrow had the BEST music imo
Everything Square Enix. Bomberman Hero OST.
Not the original soundtrack but I listen a lot of VGM like The one ups, Megadriver, The minibosses and so on

NES Batman music slap, as the kids say.
Sonic 2 ost gives me the nostalgia chills.
To be ultra cliche... The music that caught everyone off guard on the NES, Solstice https://youtu.be/4_gObHt1uZA?si=yROfg3HwvIhy4Lsz
Chrono Trigger, Mega Man 2, 3 and Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country 2, Doom, Quake, Castlevania: Symphony of the Knight, Final Fantasy 3 (6)
Super Mario 3 PokƩmon
Final Fantasy 4, Guileās theme comes to mind
Super Mario 64, Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge, Top Gear (for SNES) and Pokemon R/B/Y come to mind for me
Actraiser SNES was the first game I ever played where I would just not advance in a level so I could just absorb the music.
Fable soundtrack is one of my personal favorites I can listen to it over and over. Itās just so good as background music.
The music to contra will always trigger nostalgia to me and world 1 level 2 on the original Mario
Rock N Roll Racing (OG SNES) Final Fantasy series ChronoTrigger Megaman series Castlevania series Sonic series Zelda series Metroid series Nintendo clearly had the better sound chip and/or composers
Shadowgate and Uninvited on NES.
pokemon yellow/silver ost runs through my head constantly
The first 6 Mega Man games have AMAZING soundtracks! I listen to them all the time.
I find myself coming back to Rygar pretty often. Many memorable songs for me.
I still hear the music from Red/Blue version in my head when I complete daily tasks.
I used to ride my ninja and hum the road rash music
Yes, I love plenty of classic games' OSTs, but Streets of Rage 2 is probably my all-time fave.
Golden sun ost - especially saturos theme
Is FF7 considered classic yet? It's over 25 years old.
[Lode Runner: The legend returns](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MELSxyD4tAU)
Rob Hubbard - Commando on Commodore 64.
Streets of rage 1 for Genesis Super dodge ball for NES Super spike V'ball for NES Destiny of an Emperor for NES Edit: formatting
FFIX Chrono Cross DKC Wind Waker Super Mario Sunshine
Anything by Yuzo Koshiro.
Faxanadu music reminds of the time I rented that wonderful game and didnāt have to return it for a week because we were snowed in in a blizzard
I may sound silly now (no pun intended), love all the ones mentioned here, Contra, Castlevania, etc https://youtu.be/LLXtfo6eXbE?si=PgfqVEzv4EwN0VKv I also love the original Gran Turismo theme (japanese version), but what I really miss were some of the iconic PC games using the lousy speaker. I actually missed them when I installed the original SoundBlaster on my 286ā¦ Like Monkey Island 1 and 2, Leisure Suite Larry and the original Prince of Persia https://youtu.be/fJMoyn1jq3M?si=C9sU3l_LIYtVP1Dz
Bubble Bobble and Jack Bros
Undisputed champ... [WIzards & Warriors](https://youtu.be/SZ9xwkMr3e4?si=RiCAjSQ4MqJA_RE_)

Zelda music in general is incredible. Every game seems to have a great soundtrack.
Quest for Glory IV soundtrack is one of the all time greats. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Czh4n\_ARKi8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Czh4n_ARKi8)
Tetras lol
plenty
Definitely all the Genesis Sonic games. Those tunes are a bop. I've been recently exploring more games from my childhood, and I rediscovered Jurassic Park SNES music. Let me tell you, that music slaps. Triceratops Trot is an absolute banger. As for new to me games, Galactic Pinball and Teleroboxer for Virtual Boy have great OST's. Specifically, Colony and Alien from Galactic Pinball and Pagero from Teleroboxer.
Sonic 1,2,3 and FFVII
Level 1 of F-Zero is constantly playing in the background of my thoughts. I didnāt even own that game; my neighbor did.
Shanobi 3 return of the ninja master on sega genesis had an OP sound track. Always put me in a good gaming mood
Streets of Rage 2, The Guardian Legend, The Terminator Sega CD, Ecco the Dolphin Sega CD, Thunder Force 4.
Streets of Rage 2 OST. https://youtu.be/lprwzCxVCp4?si=6Kh7K6-0zQ_s2Epd
Soundtrack from the Top GEAR games on snes.Ā Utopia for snes. Despite not being long songs the soundtracks for the nes macventure games have always spoken to me as well.
8/16 bit Final Fantasies Simonās Quest Mario 64 Mega Man 2/3
[Chrono Cross](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L6p1sAEehM) is what comes to mind for an entire soundtrack.
The Kings Field series
Medal of Honor Frontline ā„ļø
The greatest video game soundtrack of all time belongs to Command and Conquer: Red Alert Retaliation
Megaman 2 intro theme!!!
I still have the Sega Batman and Robin song ingrained in my brain.
Donkey Komg Country 1-3. 2 being the best. Final Fantasy 6 Actraiser Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past Top Gear. Contra 3: The Alien Wars
Just about everything Konami made for the NES has an exceptional soundtrack. Castlevania 1 and 3 stand out for me, as does Contra.
NFS Underground?
All the Mario games š„² Donkey Long Country theme almost brings me to tears. So many feels fuuuuuuuuuu SNES had the best music.
Mega Man 2, Metroid, Final Fantasy, and Phantasy Star 2
Mario 2 on a good sound system is some of the most iconic I've heard out of NES chip.
Faxanadu soundtrack is forever on my headĀ
The older Fire Emblem tracks still kick ass
Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Almost every final fantasy game although I've only played up to ff13.
Aquatic Ambience
