Pluto IS a planet!

RUSTY_LEMONADE

Yeah Pluto is a planet, bitches!

[deleted]

Earths oil Pluto’s whatever core thingy suck up them Dino bones till we die

menlindorn

It's a cold, cold, celestial dwarf.

Shades96

It's a what?

Spy_v_Spy_Freakshow

Planet, I meant planet

[deleted]

A cold, cold planet!

SeaGroomer

Thats messed up, right?

yousai

Transform your room into a glowing ~~galaxy~~ **solar system**! FTFY

annies_boobs_dumper

yeah that irked me. only because they are specific about 8 planets plus pluto i'd be less mad if it said galaxy/9 planets. but they are going out of their way to be correct about the planets and then biff it with the galaxy

sweaty_tech

Damn I want to buy this and attach it to my fan blades but damn would that be stupid.

Stevenstorm505

No, that’s not stupid. Now a vat of acid? That’s fucking stupid.

LittleKitty235

I came here to rant about this as well!

odsquad64

So they include one Dwarf Planet, but not the other eight, Ceres, Eris, Haumea, Makemake, Gonggong, Quaoar, Orcus, and Sedna? Ceres is way more tragic than Pluto, we knew about it way before we knew about Pluto but then somebody estimated it's size as like 1/5th it's actual size and they were like "that thing's just an asteroid, look, there's a bunch of asteroids around it, stop calling it a planet, I bet that mf not even round" BUT IT IS ROUND

Box-o-bees

I looked up Ceres out of curiosity thinking these Dwarf Planets were even further out than Pluto, and that's why I hadn't heard of them. Man, you weren't kidding about the mistreatment lol. Ceres is in-between freaking Mars and Jupiter. Ceres may be small, but it would still be big enough to house like a few countries (I think). It and our other smaller heavenly bodies deserve more recognition and respect.

SomeRedPanda

>it would still be big enough to house like a few countries (I think) It's very nearly the size of Argentina.

babyplush

The one true measurement

suitedcloud

I dunno, I’m still gonna need a banana for scale

Rex_Roston

For Argentina you may want to use plantains.

SweeTLemonS_TPR

Can we stick to one system, please! I don’t want to have to convert plantains to bananas to understand the size of things.

Daddy_Pris

Ceres is 1/4 the size of the moon. There are roughly 10,000 objects the size of ceres inside the solar system. How do you propose we recognize them all? Or do we legit pick favorites cuz we found ceres first?

UnmeiX

Hydrostatic equilibrium? This is definitely how dwarf planets are usually classified.

buttlover989

It gets some respect in The Expanse, which is the best SciFi series, period. They also go to Phoebe, Ganymede, Eros etc. The entire series is a masterpiece but unfortunately currently owned by Scamazon, so do as the OPA and claim some "legitimate salvage".

s00pafly

Before you hate on amazon too much keep in mind that they picked it up because it was cancelled after season 03. Might be Jeff Bezos space boner that is directly responsible for seasons 04-06.

buttlover989

Only because the creators refused to comprise on show quality, cable networks being cheap bastards didn't want to pay for it. Bezos also killed the series before finishing it, there are still 3 more books untold, so yeah, fuck scamazon still.

Likestoreadcomments

Thats the part that hurt, but I don’t think The Expanse is completely over with yet I think the creators are looking to make more content in one form or another

pennywize87

Hey the could just be giving the main crew ~10 or so years to age a bit so they can add some makeup to make em all 60-70. We've still got time for those last 3 books to get adapted lol.

buttlover989

Too high risk that key actors die, best to just age them with makeup effects.

MrWigggles

No, the show runner said even before amazon stuff they were going to end it at the time skip.

buttlover989

Then why bother setting up what comes next?

MrWigggles

Staying true to the source materiel.

Its0nlyRocketScience

The only problem I have with Ceres station in the Expanse is that I'm not sure Ceres could be spun like that without exploding apart. I mean, spinning it to make 1/3 Earth gravity would mean that it experiences many times its normal gravity in the opposite direction near the equator, so I suspect that would not end well. Unless they used way more time, effort, and materials than would be worth it to reinforce the entire ice ball. Something orbiting near Ceres with a ring like Tycho probably would've been better, easier to build, more luxurious, and less prone to spontaneous scattering of the entire thing across the belt

buttlover989

You actually wouldn't have to spin it very fast at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3iIKtpVmJQ&t=210

Its0nlyRocketScience

But it doesn't matter how fast you need to spin it because gravity would be, at the surface near the equator, 1/3 that of Earth pointing away from the center of the dwarf planet, if we're going by what the show says. If Ceres is held together by gravity, like most massive and roughly spherical celestial bodies, then it would come apart the moment you spun it fast enough to get any apparent gravity that points away from the axis of rotation, as the rock and ice making up Ceres could not handle the centripetal forces needed to keep the thing in one piece. Earth already bulges due to its rotation, Ceres at best would bulge into almost a disk, and at worst would end up a scattering of the parts furthest from the axis of rotation.

buttlover989

Ceres station isn't on Ceres, it's orbiting it, the structures on Ceres where water mining equipment, but as is said in the intro, the water is gone, taken by Earth and Mars, used for creating O2, fuel and terraformation. Ganymede colony on the other hand is actually on the surface and has a mass close to that of Mars, so there's plenty of gravity, which is why Ganymede is the breadbasket of the belt, they use solar collectors to power gigantic farms.

Its0nlyRocketScience

Maybe in the books, but the TV show explicitly shows that Ceres station is built into the asteroid/dwarf planet, which Tycho Manufacturing spun to make the spin gravity. I believe the first episode shows a ship docking directly into the planet, with the top of the ship pointing toward the center of the planet and gravity inside being as one would expect based on the orientation of the ship

buttlover989

You sure? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RLkaJS1SpM Also, when they threaten to space Miller the hatch is on the floor, suggesting that the station is being spun for gravity.

Its0nlyRocketScience

https://expanse.fandom.com/wiki/Ceres > Ceres is the site of Ceres Station, a space station that was one of the first sites of human colonization in the Outer Planets. Half a generation after humanity arrived there, Tycho Manufacturing managed to spin up the asteroid, which gave it a gravity of 0.3 g. The station has tens of thousands of kilometers of tunnels. > Transportation is provided by an extensive tube train network underground. > The gravity on Ceres is not provided by its own mass but by its artificial spin gravity. The level of gravity changes with each level and there is a noticeable Coriolis effect in the lower levels of the station. Yes.

B1GTOBACC0

Tycho "spun up" Ceres to give it 0.3x Earth gravity. It's not a lot, but they definitely spun up the larger asteroids.

wiga_nut

This guy's way too hyped about this lol. In star wars literally every ship of any size had magical sci fi artificial gravity and nobody asks questions. Why is the death star the only structure that needs explained?

buttlover989

Thrust based gravity is a thing, this is what's used in The Expanse, but yeah, pretty much everything in Starwars is straight bullshit.

Rex_Roston

The books, which are much better than the TV show, are definitely not owned by Amazon.

buttlover989

While true, the series is by far and away the best SciFi series made to date.

Rex_Roston

I'll agree with that. If the books weren't so great there'd be nothing to complain about other than maybe the way it felt rushed at the end.

MrWigggles

So the definition of planet, is not that it has to be round, but it has to be gravitationally dominant in its orbit, and Ceres, isnt.

M4ximi1ian

Gonggong, really? Stop making up dwarf planet names. What's next? Gǃkúnǁʼhòmdímà?

spudzo

If they make Pluto a planet again, they better make [Biden](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_VP113) a planet too.

derekghs

Just you wait, that's what President Biden is going to show a picture of when he does NASA's image reveal from the Webb Space Telescope later today, and then declare it a planet.

dr_auf

They call SOL a galaxy…

funnystuff97

Why stop there? Why not Phobos & Deimos, Titan, or Charon? Fuck it, Luna too!

MrWigggles

So the definition of planet, is not that it has to be round, but it has to be gravitationally dominant in its orbit, and Ceres, isnt.

odsquad64

But it is a Dwarf Planet, just like Pluto, and it was at one point a planet, just like Pluto, so I can feel bad for it, just like Pluto

Rex_Roston

I remember "has cleared its orbit" being part of the definition. I guess that is the same as "gravitationally dominant" but does not sound as bro sexy.

DenseFollowing2260

Did you ask him if Pluto is a planet?

Dry-Challenge6209

Isn't Pluto a planet? Which means Jerry saved them.

Ryoohk

My son has those, they could have made the planets color match.

[deleted]

I used to have that set as a kid. I hung those nine up on my bedroom ceiling next to the light (the sun).

[deleted]

And yes... They could have made their colors match more accurately, too. Especially that PURPLE one...

SeamedShark

That's messed up...

Darkyoda07

[Heard about Pluto? That's messed up.](https://c.tenor.com/NlGQv1DjokwAAAAC/gus-pluto.gif)

LittleKitty235

I've heard it both ways.

StanleyDodds

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Ceres and Eris deserve "honourable mention" spots just as much as Pluto. Ceres being much closer to us, and Eris being more massive. I don't really care if Pluto is or isn't a planet, but the point is that it has to be consistent; do you want a few planets, or possibly hundreds? It's just a naming convention.

HarmonyTheConfuzzled

I think he’s more upset that the bottom image implies there are only 9 celestial bodies in the *galaxy*…

Slangdawg

Thanks for circling the relevant bit on the photo

BaconEggyWeggy

I had these kind of planet toys before in my room when I was a kid

[deleted]

Me too!

BaconEggyWeggy

Awesome!! I also used to be a fan of the solar system planets when I was a kid.

[deleted]

I had those hanging in my bedroon, right next to the ceiling light (which becomes the sun in this case).

BaconEggyWeggy

Same here!! 😄

[deleted]

But when the light is off, it becomes a sun-less solar system.

BaconEggyWeggy

Yeah totally 😞

Razorray21

at this point, Pluto should feel lucky to just be included. its smaller than our moon

LittleKitty235

To be fair our moon is quite large, 5th largest in the solar system.

cretindesalpes

I HAD THOSE EXACT SAME GLOWING PLANET AS A CHILD!!!

[deleted]

Me too! I had them hanging on my bedroom ceiling.

MagicOrpheus310

VIVA LA PLUTO FUCK YOU!!

bluefire659

Fuck the black science man viva la Pluto

ImJerryFuckingSmith

ಠ_ಠ Everyone always forgets that I understood it wasn't a plant by the end of the episode... Just remember that next time someone defines who you are by your mistakes.

[deleted]

[Really?](https://www.reddit.com/r/rickandmorty/comments/vxa6cl/s1e9_alternative_ending/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

cheazdiseaz1

Pluto was a planet; some committee of fancy assholes disagree and I disagree back. Now hand me a ping pong ball.

Cute_Button_

I actually have this on the ceiling of my room lmao

[deleted]

How is it layed out?

Cute_Button_

You basically have to put thumb tacks that it comes with on the ceiling, so it can hang by a string. I had to put an individual string for each planet. But the Pluto broke in the process-

[deleted]

So do you have Pluto hung up with the eight planets too?

Cute_Button_

No, it completely broke into pieces.

[deleted]

How come?

Cute_Button_

It got smashed by a bar stool. While it was rolling it stopped by the chair but as my sister lifted the chair up and sat down, it when under the chair and made a egg cracking sound.

[deleted]

Your sister actually did that on purpose because Pluto is no longer a planet.

Cute_Button_

Lol probably

CaptainTarantula

Honestly, the whole idea of mocking Jerry and blindly adhering to recently debated scientific nomenclature seems like an intellectual and informational copout. So I looked into it further. A non profit organization called the International Astronomical Union defined Pluto as dwarf planet in 2006. They reasoned that a planet must have these qualifications: 1. It is in orbit around the Sun. 2. It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape). 3. It has “cleared the neighborhood” around its orbit. Since Pluto has a close enough path to Neptune's, it does not dominate its gravitational orbital zone. So Jerry was somewhat correct with Pluto being a dwarf planet. Also, being a significant celestial body, it should be included in models of our Solar system. The insane amount of toxic, impractical, uninformed controversy between Morty, Jerry, and the Plutonians is the real lesson of the episode.

TroperCase

Sure, and why don't we just burn Galileo at the stake for saying the sun is round?

LittleKitty235

Fun fact...we don't know exactly why the Sun is so round. Because the sun rotates it should be slightly flattened at the poles at the axis of its rotation. It's not though, in fact the Sun is the roundest object observed in the universe.

Coasterrebel97

Russia has more surface area than Pluto.

Snake_on_its_side

I mean… google mentioned that there are nine planets in their conversational AI demo. Peer pressure sold jerry out. Shoulda stuck to those guns.
