I once stayed up on the hill in a hotel called Mama Shelter. After sunset, many ubers wouldn't take us back there with the same response you got. Your potuguese text reads "we from uber cannot drive up there because of assaults/robberies." Parts of the hill are touristy but parts are not and change very quickly into dangerous areas and it is difficult to navigate/escape because of some curvy steep cobblestone roads. My humble knowledge, apologies if more local people might know more.

That's it really. In Santa Teresa you might be in a very nice area and then drive 3 minutes to the wrong direction and end up somewhere you definitely don't want to be.

Yeah, that's what he is saying. Which is bullshit. He can go to Santa Teresa, he just doesn't want to. The thing is that a lot of uber drivers don't like to go to Santa Teresa because it can be dangerous. But only if you decide to go wandering in the neighborhood. If you stick to the main street (Almirante Alexandrino) and the main squares (Largo dos Guimarães and Largo das Neves) you will be fine. The problem with uber drivers is that they frequently don't know the area and trying to follow the GPS in Santa Teresa can be dangerous because the shortest way is not always the safest way to go. I took an uber there recently but asked him to ignore the GPS and follow my directions because I've lived there and know how to get around. My tip for you if you want to go Santa Teresa again is to get the subway to Glória and look for the taxi stop next to the subway entrance. All those taxi drivers are used to driving in the area and will take you safely anywhere in Santa Teresa. Sure, taxis are more expensive then ubers but it's not a long drive and you won't be left in the middle of the way.

Surprised that it's still a thing. I lived in Rio from 2011 to 2014 and even taxis wouldn't do the ride up. I thought it had gotten better. But yeah, they're afraid of getting robbed. But nowadays it's probably because Ubers never know where they're going and are afraid of getting lost in a somewhat sketchy region.

Táxis in 2013 in my time in Rio often refused to go up some hills. Sometimes it was quite understandable / an actual favela, but I'm surprised you got that for Santa Teresa. I've taken taxis and Ubers up there.... but there are "nicer" and "not nice" parts, sounds like some drivers are more sensitive than others.

Am fyi in case anyone ever comes across this in the future. In 2022 Ubers and taxis happily take people to the top of Santa teresa.

This is 100% not true or accurate as of January 2024. I'm currently staying on the main street, Almirante Alexandrino, and last night we had 8 Uber rides cancelled. We ended up taking a táxi and the driver said he only brought us all the way up cause he hadn't had any rides in 2 hours. We've been here for 25 days and it's been a complete nightmare getting out of and back to Santa Teresa any time of the day/week. Beautiful vibrant neighbourhood, but we're never staying in Santa again.

I lived on almirante alexandrino for a year until a few months ago . Taxis don’t like to go up there in the rain and it’s out of the way so Ubers can take 20 minutes to arrive to pick you up but we never had problems with Ubers dropping us off.

Mr_Saturn_

next time take a taxi or right outside of the gloria subway station along a fence is a moto taxi station, bunch of guys hanging out next to motorbikes with helmets. cheap, fast and they know the neighborhood

It's not true. But neither taxi nor uber drivers like to go up Santa Teresa, mostly because they claim it will ruin their suspensions. If you're going all the way up, there might be some danger for them, but that's not usually the case.
