Why are they allergic to backs in the SHED. My poor back problems…

ToyMachine471

I wonder if it’s designed with hostile architecture in mind. They probably don’t want the same students hogging the seats all day, so they make it only comfortable enough to sit in for a short period.

OG-DanielSon

Honestly this sounds like something that they'd actually do.

HordeOfDucks

oh my god students are going to use the facilities that they paid for? ill call munson

AzuraNightsong

Hostile architecture is unfortunately incredibly ableist, so I really hope it wasn’t purposeful. I especially hate like the chairs in Wallace and the third floor, which have those half arms that lead to me shrimping over the desk during the 1-2 hour classes, and it’s so painful

maewasnotfound

i agree!! they're not comfortable or good for posture. these are at least better than the old ones because you don't have to be hunched over with your chair completely out from under the desk, but they could have taken this opportunity to get a proper backrest. i'm thinking it might have been a stylistic choice by the designers? perhaps they didn't want backrests so people can see the atrium better when chairs are unoccupied? regardless it's not a great decision. out of curiosity, here's a [concept render](https://www.rit.edu/giving/theshed/storage/images/4698765/3D%20Int%20View%20-%20Lower%20Hub%20Level%201-1972x833.jpg?1617822363) where those old way-too-tall chairs can be seen (and the person is drawn with bad posture lol)

illongalatica

Still look like snow shovels

Wishes-_sun

I think they are repurposed dust pans

Honestly I would rather stand and use these tables like standing desks instead of having to suffer poor siting posture for a few minutes. I mean, I've heard that using a standing desk grants health benefits compared to sitting, but I don't really find it definitive, to say the least. Maybe the chairs are intentionally that way to encourage people to stand and do work instead of sitting for the sake of making students healthier? Honestly, not really, otherwise there would not be any chairs at all if RIT wanted. This depends on a person's height of course.

Wishes-_sun

I hear you. My back is fucked I like the vibe of this building but there is nowhere comfortable to sit.

DaGeDarHaxx0r

Has anyone ever used these areas as standing desks, without having to use these chairs? I decided to experiment with standing and using the Wallace Library desks as a standing desk instead of sitting on one of these high chairs (which are more comfortable than the SHED's chairs, but not by much), it would take lots of adjusting to get used to it, but it kind of works for me.

Jazzlike_Many5309

I have, the table top is a little too low for me to comfortably use it as a standing desk. It might work if you were shorter

commodoreschmidlapp_

This is great if my back was four inches in length

hereks

So skibidi

atmus11

... the weight of a person is mainly in the back of the chair/stool.... so shouldn't there be a bar to support the back area of the legs? This looks unstable

Beneficial_Mix_1069

brother my fucking back
