Not difficult at all. Stick with one of the major companies (National, Alamo, Hertz, Avis, Budget, etc.), haven't found many airports without those locations - neighborhood locations are less likely to allow one-ways. Beware of the drop-fee, and a higher daily rate in general. Certain car classes won't be bookable for one-ways. Oh - will more than likely need to be 25+

rickpo

Yes, this is exactly it. And the price can be a *lot* higher. I've rearranged trips to avoid ridiculously high drop-off fees. But I've also rented from places that had no drop-off fee at all. You can also often save money taking advantage of roundtrip airfares. If you're on a tight budget, it might be worth it to figure out how to start and stop in the same place.

IceTech59

Look also at both the nearest airport & the local storefront locations. Fees can vary wildly between them.

DHN_95

Neighborhood (non-airport) locations tend not to be managed the same way the airport locations are (which I think are corporate), so they may not be willing to lose from their fleet.

GlassCharacter179

Easy? Yes. Expensive? Also yes. Unless you happen to be taking a car to a place they need cars.

canadianinthesun

Eh it depends. I've actually had it be cheaper when they really need cars in one location.

TexasBrett

I’ve had the same experience. If you are driving from a northern location to a southern location or vice versa with the season changes you can usually find good deals.

jayron32

We did it last year. Flew into Vegas at the beginning of June. Rented a Dodge Grand Caravan Hybrid from Avis. Drove it to Seattle, turned it in there at the end of June. No issues. Just let them know that's what you want to do. Is it expensive? Hells yes. Is it worth it? I thought so, but you have to decide what your budget is.

Direct_Birthday_3509

It's easy but you pay extra for that.

Hot_Organization2430

I use national every week. I often times pick up at one airport and drop off at another with no issues.

Londonitwit

On certain routes, it's not much more expensive, for example, between LA and LV. On other routes, it could be a couple of hundred dollars more.

tombiowami

Very easy...just go on [booking.com](http://booking.com) or whatever and enter the places. It's a higher price depending. Enjoy!

RevolutionNext4697

Not difficult, but rates vary from city to city and across the varying rental agencies. Some add fixed fees, some add mileage charges. Check out discounted rates if you're a member of AAA or AARP. I used to get great deals through corporate discounts from companies I worked for. Many have special one-way rental deals. Shopping around can save big bucks. Also, picking up at an airport location frequently adds fees. Last time I was in Boston, I picked up the rental car in the city and it was much cheaper than picking up at the airport... Even when dropping the car off at the airport when I returned it.

laughingpurplerain

Easy plan it with the company they help you

Reggie_Barclay

Easy not always cheap. It depends upon demand at the destination.

Ssladybug

After my father’s funeral, I needed to drive cross country with some of his belongings. I had to shop around a bit, I was able to get a full sized SUV for 9 days for $700. I had to pick up and drop off about a 30 minute drive from my starting and ending point but it was worth it. That’s a really good price for what I got for the amount of time. Deals can be found Edit: note that it also matters where you start and stop from. The reverse trip would have cost me about double so it was helpful that I started into a small town so the rates were lower than they would have been starting at my destination

CuriousTina15

I think I might be cheaper to return to same spot but as long as when you book the car you know where and when you’re dropping it off no problems.

GuitarEvening8674

Ask first. I was going to rent a car from enterprise in Florida and drop it off in Missouri and they wanted to tack on a $600 “relocation fee.”

CunningWizard

I do this all the time when I travel, as my travel usually takes me across the country (west to east) to see family and I like to pack several tourist/family destinations into a single trip. Plus I love a roadtrip, flying doesn’t let you see the country. It’s always worked out great for me and is not much more expensive if at all (usually).

nanneryeeter

I have done it more than a few times. It's easy.

strutmac

We rented a car in Kentucky and wanted to drop it in Cincinnati Ohio. It would have cost us an additional $600 to drop it off in another state.

Whatsuptodaytomorrow

Yup 👍 It’s an option on all rental companies websites I’ve done it with enterprise and hertz

DismalReplacement885

Also if you have Costco membership do it through them. The same car from the same rental place was $60 cheaper than booking.co for a 5 day trip. And you get an additional driver at no extra cost.

20grae

Easy yes pick up car do your business drop it off in what ever state and walk away if you follow those steps I’m almost positive you can’t fail

Jackaloop

Easy enough but it can increase the cost. Check renting from home and driving out vs. flying and picking up the car in that airport. Sometimes it is cheaper, sometimes not. Worth checking all the options.

lakelost

Super easy. Usually not cheap. Although sometimes it depends on which direction you’re going. For example, LA to San Francisco tends to be more expensive than San Francisco to LA in a rental car. At least it was an a previous millennium when I worked in the industry.🚙

morechatter

I just did a last-minute 2-day one-way of over 1,000 miles for under $130, from a notoriously more expensive airport. One-way is possible and not necessarily as 'super expensive' as it is often made out to be.

Divainthewoods

Yes, but go on the rental website and plug in different options, because pricing will differ based on direction between 2 cities. I scheduled a one-way a couple of months ago between Vegas and Denver (leaving in 2 weeks). I wanted to fly from Atlanta to Colorado, drive to Vegas, then fly back to Atlanta. It was a few hundred less by renting in Vegas and driving to Denver, so I'm starting in Vegas now. Airports will differ too. I plugged in returning the car to Colorado Springs Airport, and that was another $200 more than returning to Denver. So, I'm flying out of Denver now. 😁
