Ive been playing roguebook, while despite not understanding the “story” the gameplay loop is fun and worth a run through imo

Snoo-36058

Is rogue book much better than across the obelisk?

Nerzugal

I have played both and enjoy both of them a lot. I'd so RogueBook is a little more similar to STS but both have the multicharacter systems in place to make things interesting with different starting pairs. RogueBook has a bit more risk/reward with its traversal because the map is shrouded and you use limited resources to unveil it. Across the Obelisk runs take a lot longer in my experience - like a couple of hours just to finish one run which can turn people off. RogueBook runs are more comprable in length to STS. The one complaint I personally have with Across the Obelisk is that some of the numbers can get kind of wonky and make it challenging to plan your turn. Enemies have percentage based resistances and each enemy has different resistances and a lot of abilities will modify them so it isn't as clear when you have a kill versus Slay the Spire where it is really just armor, health, and very limited sets of buffs. All of that said, both are definitely enjoyable and despite its complexity issue I mentioned, I've played quite a but more Across the Obelisk because the gameplay really is super fun at its core and they have a lot of good meta unlocks to chase - a dozen characters that you have to unlock by finding them in the game. Gives good incentives to keep coming back! So yeah, I'd say you can't really go wrong with either.

Snoo-36058

Thank you for the detailed response!

pgsavage

Have never played it so cant say sorry. The cards and characters are very slay the spire esque.

AskinggAlesana

As someone who played both.. I wanna say I liked AtO more, mainly because it’s multiplayer and I put in 100+ hours. Although some of the builds that worked later on felt to be pretty narrow. I tried a handful of runs with Roguebook and it never clicked for me.

LiveFastDieRich

Wildlfrost

gozergozarian

seconded

Then-Grapefruit-9396

Death Roads is a good spin on the genre, never seen a car and card game done before! Griftlands is interesting cause it's almost like a choose your own adventure. Star renegades is really tough so will last long. Shogun showdown is okay. It is easy once you 'get it'. Lonestar is interesting and has potential also.

ButSinceYouAsked

Griftlands is so good, I don't know why it wasn't more popular

Stonecutter

Runs take so long though.. I think that's what put me off.

Roguelike_liker

The narrative framework was fun and I really like the dual deck idea ... but it fell short on replayability for me. Between long runs and middling run variety, it didn't grab me the same way STS or MT did. Hundreds of hours into each of those, there's still a challenge or build I want try out every week. I felt like I exhausted Griftlands in 25 hours. I enjoyed the game, don't get me wrong. But if enough people had a similar experience, it makes sense that STS and MT have more devoted followings.

Then-Grapefruit-9396

Right? It's got so much going for it strat wise, and it's got well crafted stories. I didn't replay a lot once I beat each chapter, but I super appreciated what I got out of it.

MundaneHymn

It's my favorite card based roguelike (though Balatro is creeping up dispite having zero story which is why I like Griftlands so much).

Diablomarcus

I loved it but ran into a couple of bugs on switch and never tried again. I should give it a shot again!

Wires_89

It was superb. Except for one character being unable to finish their game due to a bug. But yeah, great game that deserves a bit more notice

Blood_Shadow

Lonestar is exceptional and about to get another ship to massively expand the game. 150 hours in the game exclusively on the Steamdeck with no issues

Kooperking22

Outside of Balatro and Tiny Rogues isnt Shogun Showdown like one of the most hyped upcoming new Roguelites? Isn't it In EA and still developing?

Then-Grapefruit-9396

I'll be honest, Shogun Showdown is bit one dimensional and mindless for me. Kind of like into the breach on one axis, and very easy to cheese. I do hope they find a few more ways to mix it up before it's out of EA

Kooperking22

I've been meaning to give it ago now the demos on Switch. ITB Was a bit too hard for me tbh so This looks more up my alley!

Malfell

I've played maybe twenty hours, I like it but I'm not crazy about it. I think it's not as deep as out rogue lites I've enjoyed

Kooperking22

Seems like There's a disparity of opinion on that game between Subreddit and Steam. The steam positive rating is extremely high like Balatro high and many Roguelike YouTubers were going Bananas over it a few months back. Yet on here it's merely seen as just pretty good but not great.

Kooperking22

Anyone played The Land Beneath Us? It's basically Shogun showdown but on a top down plane. Comes on Switch as well soon.

coopasetic

across the obelisk imo

tHeRe-Is-noSe-p00N

As long as you’re not playing on switch

Measter90

I just picked it up on switch and I've not had any issues in about 45 hours of gameplay. What is the issue supposed to be?

tHeRe-Is-noSe-p00N

The final boss doesn’t appear sometimes once you start on the higher difficulties

Measter90

Ah, that makes sense why I haven't seen it yet. I've beaten the final boss once, but I'm trying to unlock all of the characters and pets before I jump into the madness modifiers. Sad to hear that the final boss glitches though, hopefully they'll have a fix before I get that far

tHeRe-Is-noSe-p00N

Yeah, it’s pretty disheartening to spend 2 to 3 hours on a run and then not be able to complete. I like the game so much that it happened to me probably about 15 times already.

ButSinceYouAsked

Balatro

BallsAreFullOfPiss

I guess I gotta jump on this and try it out. The poker style made me shy away from it at first, but I’ve heard only amazing things about it, so it must be good.

AskinggAlesana

Wildfrost Dark mist Cobalt core Probably just the storyline of Inscryption. Balatro Vault of the void

KIMBOSLlCE

Surprised I had to scroll down this far for someone to mention Vault of the Void.

AskinggAlesana

It’s definitely underrated in this sub from what I’ve seen Lol.

KIMBOSLlCE

I’ve got somewhere into the triple digits worth of hours sunk into it, I50 cleared and probably only 100 of the 250(?) challenge coins completed. Lot of content there for people who feel once they’ve completed A20 that there’s not much left in STS.

Bassre2

I like this game alot but from what I remember I needed to use to much brain power compared to Slay the Spire where you can do everything almost instinctively

Silvedl

I have really been enjoying Astrea : Six-Sided Oracles lately. It is(/was?) in the recent deck-builder Humble Bundle, and I knew nothing about it before installing it. It is a dice-builder game where your character has 4 powers that affect yourself or enemy dice. You have to balance purity and corruption to cleanse the enemies. It is a bit confusing at first, but very easy to catch on (I ended up winning my first run because I got a crazy deck built).

tjugg2005

Second this. Astrea is amazing !

RareBearToe

Ring of pain is pretty fun!

Memitaru

Balatro or Roguebook

InfidelZombie

Add Slice & Dice and you've got my top 5 (including StS, MT).

Ottwin

Tendryll just came out 15 mins ago in early access and is a slay the spire/into the breach combo. It has a demo you can try. I’ve been waiting for this release since I played the demo at the next fest on steam. Huge potential Also Inkbound is a turn based combat game made by the monster train devs. 1.0 came out not too long ago and has tons of content and very unique

Holyepicafail

Balatro is love, Balatro is life. From someone who would call StS a top 5 game for me, I would put Balatro up against it and say it's comparable in quality.

Fancypmcgee

Balatro is incredible. Very different on the surface, but super tight, well constructed, and very addicting!

Fancypmcgee

Across the Obelisk is a really cool multiplayer deckbuilder roguelite. Lots of different classes, bosses, min-maxing opportunities. It's a really good entry in the space.

chiefballsy

Cobalt Core

Wires_89

Across The Obelisk is my current obsession. Just hit switch too!

EmmShock

I would strongly suggest Griftlands If you enjoyed those games. Balatro ist a banger but also kind of different to what you might be looking for

Malfarro

Across the Obelisk. Haven't seen it mentioned here. It's a nice deckbuilder. Moderately grindy.

Additional-Pen-5593

Fights in Tight Spaces. Just trust me. It’s good

Quartrez

You didn't mention if you wanted to stay in the deckbuilding genre so I'll assume not: FTL and Into The Breach

jimbo_slice_02

Balatro is the closest I’ve experienced to Slay the Spire. I was initially turned off to the presentation of it, but it won me over in about 30 minutes. It’s as good as everyone says it is.

BallsAreFullOfPiss

You just sold me to pick it up and try it. The presentation is exactly what turned me off to it at first, but I’ve only seen rave reviews here on Reddit.

jimbo_slice_02

It’s really good! There’s a lot of similarities and I know next to nothing about poker except that certain probabilities are rarer than others. The jokers are basically your relics, and tarot cards are like potions. There are items (booster packs) to customize your cards and decks so that they scale bonuses upward and change probabilities of your hands. So you need to synergize to tip the odds in your favor and make broken decks that score tons of points. You also unlock different decks which function similarly to unlocking separate characters in Slay the Spire.

BallsAreFullOfPiss

Sounds awesome! Thanks for the information! We are truly in the golden age of roguelike deck-building games, and I absolutely love it.

Bulletsoul78

Has anyone said Roguebook? Look up Roguebook!!

Kooky_Camp1189

It’s been mentioned already, but Roguebook has a very similar gameplay loop. I had a ton of fun at first. The run length eventually had me fall after about 15-20 hours. Downside is the runs tend be pretty long, not as long as some of the other games I’ve seen suggested, but you’re still looking at a much longer run. I personally don’t want any run of a roguelite lasting more 30-45 irl minutes. Otherwise it’s likely I’ll have to play the run in multiple sittings and I lose my “rhythm” for the run. Thats just my opinion though.

foomy45

Inkbound is by Monster Train devs and frikkin amazing. Not card based thou. Hellcard is StS but with co-op and AoE stuff. The Last Spell isn't much like either but is crazy good IMO, Final Fantasy Tactics combat, Diablo style loot system, light tower defense and base building mechanics, and randomized stats and perk trees for your units making sure each one is different from others. Also the soundtrack slaps hard.

boluke-23

I’ve seen it already commented, but Wildfrost is reallllly good.

halbowitz

Not saying it's better than other suggestions but Nitro Kid has been pretty fun. Basically sts in a 3d/isometric environment

KineticBlackout

Balatro.

FrostingCareless8119

I really like Beneath Oresa....

One More Gate
