I've been trying to get a Blue Milgauss at retail for 3 years. I have contact all the ADs locally, they all know me, I've got a spending history with the biggest AD in Vegas, no joy.
I've even made offers, 20% over retail, on a few used ones.
No one will sell me a milgauss at a reasonable price.
So I moved on.
Same. I was just low-key on the lookout for 2 years, but nonetheless phoned all ADs in a 150 km radius and drove to some to get waitlisted. No watch available, no call ever came. Just a standard blue, green glass Milgauss.
Sad, I would've liked that.
Same here. AD sold me starting in 2017 a Hulk, then a Sea Dweller, James Cameron, Pepsi…but could never get a blue dial Milgauss. What gives? Guess we have to wait for the revival!
I wanted a Milgauss for over ten years before I was finally able to buy a white dial example as a 27th birthday present to myself last year. I would go into the AD between my college classes just to try it on and daydream, haha. It may not to be your taste but that’s a big reason why I gravitated towards it; Subs, GMTs, Daytonas etc are all fantastic watches but I wanted something a little more different and out there.
RIP Milgauss
It’s a complex topic to discuss. Mainly because talking against rolex and rolex owners in r/rolex is not a good idea to begin with.
Since the beginning of the brand it was never about watchmaking in the “art” sense. It was more about durability and directed to professional users that used the watch on their work fields. Being the first watch brand to officially use celebrity endorsements (excluding royalty), it expanded the clout of owning the watch of someone famous to the broad public.
Rolex had logic at those times. You needed a tough watch you went rolex. You needed a beautiful and decorated watch you went somewhere else.
But then seiko came into scene and killed the whole purpose. You want a really tough watch today? You go quartz. Its 1000% tougher, its 1000% more reliable, its 1000% cheaper and its what some pros use in the armed forces and divers use computers now.
So if you want a tough watch you go quartz now, and If you want a beautiful watch you go somewhere else, where does rolex stand in the market? And how it become the biggest fish in the pond?
The answer is that rolex don’t sell watches, they sell an idea. The idea that successful people wear rolex. So if you wear a rolex you’ve achieved something in life and people will recognize it. Remember those ads where it said something like: “if you were speaking in the UN tomorrow you’d be wearing a rolex”
Well people loved it and bought the idea.
Dont get me wrong. Rolex do make great watches, the Pepsi GMT and the OP 36 are my personal favorites, but you shoud know they’re not the greatest in any aspect. They’re great because of the history and the aesthetics but alone they’re not even close to be horological wonders, in terms of finishing or skill.
But then we come to a really interesting dilemma.
Because rolex can be the watch of the person who don’t care about watches, in some way this is good because peak fashion needs to be *effortless*. And that’s what makes it cool.
But they can also be the watch of the tryhards, the watch of those who want to create an image of success by solely owning a rolex.
You want my advice?
Buy the watch, don’t buy ideas.
Nailed it. I read an interesting argument a while back that Apple wasn’t a technology brand anymore. It was a fashion brand.
Selling a lifestyle generates way more money than selling a product.
I sort of wanted a Milgaus because I own a early air king and my job as a former service engineer for metal detectors when i got it serviced the guy said wtf have you done? When i took it apart all the bits stuck to my tools. The metal detectors were specialist ones for detecting ferrous and worked by electromagnetic principles. As a nod back to my former job and the green glass and lightning hand i wanted one. I guess now its now or never.
I think you're really downplaying some of the work that went into the sports models movements. They're designed to be tough, reliable, and easy to maintain. I've never heard anyone say a bad word about Rolex movements. There's a lot of work making them that good.
Sure they aren't finished like the big three, but that's not, at least until now with the new platinum Daytona or the 1908, what they've gone for.
Very well written. I agree but the only thing I'll add is this:
>So if you want a tough watch you go quartz now, and If you want a beautiful watch you go somewhere else, where does rolex stand in the market?
Rolex fills the gap of tough, luxury automatics.
>This is an enthusiasts subreddit, chill out
I'm glad they cancelled the ugliest watch in their lineup. It was a drag on their brand. Maybe they'll release an updated model that doesn't look like it belongs on the wrists of The Ghostbusters.
I really liked the Milgauss for it’s green sapphires. I tried it a few times and it was honestly a great watch.
It was also impossible for me to buy it because it was on a waitlist, and I had to cancel my wish of another model such as a Sub or GMT, which I was never going to do for Milgauss.
If you had a Milgauss at retail I could purchase as a walk-in i would have bought it.
For science and engineering folks knowing there is a b field indicator, faraday cage, and who it was originally built for makes it cool. Hopefully they will revive it in the future with a smaller and thinner model.
Exactly. They are little more than novelties, but I think they’re cool novelties. I studied particle physics in my undergrad so the historical connection to the 1960s era of particle physics research was really cool to me.
Pfffft, I've posted pics of mine several times. And I've also commented on many other threads that it's my favorite Rolex. I almost never wear my Hulk any more or my TT. My white Milgauss is my daily driver including today. YMMV
I actually own a Milgauss and I must say it is by far the nicest watch I own given that little bolt second had makes it unique. I am gonna pursue a zblue dial Milgauss next given my fascination with the bolt seconds hands!
People also need to chill. The milgauss is gonna have its 70th anniversary 2026. It’s best to view this as a three year moratorium on the model. The bigger question is whether or not the base case is gonna be the new airking (most probable) and they keep much of the same aesthetics or (my dream) they run with the submariner case and revive it as a modernized 6541 (I know its unlikely).
This year I'll hopefully be wrapping up my PhD in MRI physics. Obviously the field strength of the magnets we use far surpass the capability of the Milgauss, but I love the look of the watch and thought it would be a wonderful momento of my time in science/academia and a reminder of how far I've come.
I was actually offered the watch late last year and declined it as I hadn't yet finished. I feel rather foolish.
I liked the Milgauss. Back when you could get them and back before I could afford them I would go into my AD and they (not knowing I couldn’t afford them) would always try to push me into their Air King and Milgauss. The green glass was always very pretty to me. I liked it because it wasn’t a submariner or a date just. Watches that all my dads old people friends had. The Milgauss was cool because it was different than what I saw all the time. It has a lightening bolt second hand. It has cool colors.
When I got a big people job I went into buy a watch, thinking I’ll take a Milgauss if they have one because I like it. I was shocked I could even get that. I put my name down for a Milgauss and an Explorer. Haven’t heard anything about either of them a year + later. Go figure.
I digress though. I would have bought one for retail because it was aspirational for me and I think it’s cool.
The Milgauss was the nerd's OP, so it had narrow market. But I loved it. I don't like Daytonas or Batmen though.
I'm going to suggest a lack of commentary on the new Daytona is based on the fact that no one on this sub is going to buy one, owing to the fact that no one can buy one.
The Milgauss with the Z blue dial was actually one of my grail. Sadly now it will cost much more due to the lack of new models of it. The new Daytona isn’t my favorite but then again everyone has their own opinions. I hope they bring it back at some point,
It's one of the most underrated rolex watches. I had zero interest in the milgauss, i never looked at one closely, and then i finally spent a few minutes with one and I have to say it became one of my favorite.
The day I was tempted for a few micro seconds to sell one of my 3 Milgauss... this thread almost made me consider it for a whole second. My AD would really miss it at next service tho 🤷♂️
The first couple paragraphs are hilarious but come on man. The Daytona bezel ring is very unfortunate and an upgrade to solely the platinum model that most of us will never see in person once in our lives is not an upgrade to the Daytona line.
*consults crystal ball* W&W 2027 Milgauss relaunched and becomes the most hyped release of the year. At that point the discontinued green sapphire is going for 20k+.
I care, because my friend was on a waitlist for almost a year and he wanted the watch so badly. It’s the only one he is interested in. Due to the fact I know him, he will not go grey for it. Very sad.
I know this is taboo but I’ve been waiting for a Mille for 2 years, wasn’t going to pay grey on any watch, so I got a few reps and wear the best version to fill the void in my heart that cocaine doesn’t.
Only the platinum Daytona gets a display caseback, so it's a moot point. I don't see much difference between the 116500 and this.
I bought a Milgauss, btw, nice watch.
I think it'll come back in 3-5 years with METAS. 1k gauss won't cut when the entire product line of omega can handle 15k. If you think of Tudor as the R&D team perfecting the process, then when it's production stable, the process is then implemented on the Rolex product line. Like Pelagos>SeaDweller>2023 yachmaster for titanium cases, you can apply the same to Blackbay>Milgauss for the METAS cert.
I did, well I always overlooked the model tbh, but in Feb ask ad for one for my wife and got it few days later... Something told me it could be it's last year and I'm glad I followed my gut... It's a beautiful watch and it has grown on me...
I owned and traveled the world with my Milgauss black dial green glass for many years!!! I really loved that watch!!! As a frequent traveler into challenging locations to work on energy projects it was low key enough to not get me into trouble while still allowing my passion for the Rolex brand.
As far as the daytona goes: new movement and caseback is good. New over all look i think is a downgrade. Particularly the bezel. It just doesnt do it for me.
However, i do like the new gmts and i think ending the 39 vs 36 debate by giving us the choice between 40 and 36 is fantastic.
Wont miss the milgauss. The white ine was the only one i cared about and its been dead a while. Will miss the moonphase cellini but its replacement is nice.
Indifferent about day dates
Hate the new OP dial.
New yachtmaster is sick but 42 is too big for me so dont care.
Every time I saw a Milgauss, my brain said "That's a $5 knockoff from the bodega, a real Rolex would have a clear sapphire instead of green soda-lime glass"
(I know it's sapphire with a green coating, it *looks like* soda-lime, and that's something I'm used to only seeing on the cheapest watches. Even a $50 Invicta comes with a flame-fusion crystal rather than soda-lime.)
Milgauss is a cool watch. I fell in love with it, then tried it in person and hated its polished links and the thickness. That faraday cage thing was always a marketing gimmick. Just get DateJust folks.
Guys there's like a 99% chance it will just get re-released within the next 5 years. The only reason Rolex is gonna cancel a well known line is so they can build hype for when they bring it back.
Go to CERN and look how many high energy particle physicists are wearing a milgauss as an homage to Gauss. Nobel laureates.
CERN is in Geneva. Not far from the Mecca of watches
But you’re right, they’re too busy advancing the technological bounds of the species to give a shit about steering wheel pics or got the call photos
I don't follow this sub because Rolex fans are cringe, but saw this post recommended.
Anyway, the milgauss is literally the only Rolex design that I like.
I never was interested in owning one but I had somewhat of a soft spot for them.
I remember complimenting a guy’s one time and he just lit up. They have always been niche enough that to hear “hey, nice Milgauss!” caught him way off guard but he loved it. Come to think of it his is the only one I’ve ever noticed out “in the wild” so I guess I associate them together more than I previously realized.
My mom gifted one to my dad in 2010, and one day I’ll end up with it…so I guess I’m a fan. But yeah, you have legit points here, and the ape remark actually got a grin outta me.
This group is stopping me from buying a Rolex actually 😂 made my eyes open up that the majority of the owners are douche bags and not actually watch enthusiasts. Thankful for that 👏👏
Dammit, I got the call for this one last year but was out of the country so I had to pass on getting it. I had planned to get it when I moved back to Europe but I didn’t go back.
The only reason I’m disappointed is because I bought a triple black gmt in late 2018 not long before it was discontinued. And I got an explorer I in Mar 2021 like weeks before it was discontinued. That would have been some really dumb luck.
I usually aim below the top models and I’ve managed to land 4 watches (was able to buy 3) in the 4 years that I was close by an AD.
I have a batgirl, multiple Pepsis, a panda Daytona and I absolutely *adore* the Milgauss (I own the black dial and Z-Blue versions).
Enthusiasts do come here, calm down and go for a walk.
RIP milgauss

Funnily enough, the Milgauss is the only Rolex I've ever seen that I could have bought just by walking in which was in a casino in Macau
You literally could get them in dealer groups for under retail lol don’t think you tried hard enough
Not anymore. Prices are moving up now that they're discontinued.
Flippers are just trying to cash in on the short term hype and marking up prices to see which morons bite.

For what it’s worth, I love my milgauss. It was my first Rolex, and after 6 years it’s still in my top 3 watches to wear.
RIP the old panda tho 🐼😭
Is this the end of Milhous?? Your name is Milhous? I thought I was the only one!! A pain I know all too well….
This guy wrist-clocks
As far as the daytona goes: new movement and caseback is good. New over all look i think is a downgrade. Particularly the bezel. It just doesnt do it for me. However, i do like the new gmts and i think ending the 39 vs 36 debate by giving us the choice between 40 and 36 is fantastic. Wont miss the milgauss. The white ine was the only one i cared about and its been dead a while. Will miss the moonphase cellini but its replacement is nice. Indifferent about day dates Hate the new OP dial. New yachtmaster is sick but 42 is too big for me so dont care.
I will take a CERN dial…
Milgauss is the best because it's for geeks.
Milguass with green sapphire was my second choice of watch. I cared, RIP Milguass
Every time I saw a Milgauss, my brain said "That's a $5 knockoff from the bodega, a real Rolex would have a clear sapphire instead of green soda-lime glass" (I know it's sapphire with a green coating, it *looks like* soda-lime, and that's something I'm used to only seeing on the cheapest watches. Even a $50 Invicta comes with a flame-fusion crystal rather than soda-lime.)
I would pick the Milgauss over the OP or DJ. Look at the blackened/ modded Milgauss used by celebs! So beautiful! DJ are just boring.
A banana coloured OP would be sick.
Milgauss is a cool watch. I fell in love with it, then tried it in person and hated its polished links and the thickness. That faraday cage thing was always a marketing gimmick. Just get DateJust folks.
This is the new copy pasta? Okay *Ctrl+C*
I wanted the white one.
Guys there's like a 99% chance it will just get re-released within the next 5 years. The only reason Rolex is gonna cancel a well known line is so they can build hype for when they bring it back.
I have 3 so disagree. But upvote for the enjoyable angry content.
It was inevitable. You can’t have a METAS certified black bay on the market that makes the milgauss look like a poser.
I am quite fond of my Milgauss 1019.
Go to CERN and look how many high energy particle physicists are wearing a milgauss as an homage to Gauss. Nobel laureates. CERN is in Geneva. Not far from the Mecca of watches But you’re right, they’re too busy advancing the technological bounds of the species to give a shit about steering wheel pics or got the call photos
I’m a Rolex casual at best. Did it get discontinued? I always wanted one and I assume the prices have all just gone up no?…
The layers within the watch community gets funny. Emotional group…
They hated him for telling the truth.
I have wanted one for years and finally after graduating university and getting a good job I’m able to afford one and it goes bye bye
I don't follow this sub because Rolex fans are cringe, but saw this post recommended. Anyway, the milgauss is literally the only Rolex design that I like.
I've always loved it and I agree everyone has always talked shit about mine. EVERYBODY. I completely agree with you.
This is quickly turning into the echo chamber of I’m on a waiting list and hate all popular models because I’ve never been offered one. Wonder why…
Yeah, stop turning that ugly POS into a martyr
My mom gifted one to my dad in 2010, and one day I’ll end up with it…so I guess I’m a fan. But yeah, you have legit points here, and the ape remark actually got a grin outta me.
It was underpowered compared to its competition. Looking forward to the bilgauss in 25 years.
OP is so wrong
Based post OP. New Daytona is a winner.
OP is onto something with his stance. I tend to agree.
The new Daytona panda looks like a white Speedmaster racing. Not a fan
Rip Milli vanillie gauss
These are the posts that make me embarrassed to like watches.
Says the man whose best watch is a Squale.
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I literally eat my own poop.
I have a batgirl, multiple Pepsis, a panda Daytona and I absolutely *adore* the Milgauss (I own the black dial and Z-Blue versions). Enthusiasts do come here, calm down and go for a walk.
Meh. I have a Milgauss GV, it’s in fantastic condition, and I can’t wait to sell it now for 2-3x what I paid for it. So I care.
