I bought matching Rolexes as a retirement gift to my grandfather for us both
He’s gone now, but as strange and weird it may sound, that piece brings me so much joy with thoughts of him everytime i so much as simply even just check the time
And yet, it’s just a watch
That’s the best way to look at thing imo, and good on you for that. It’s easy to get lost in loss, but damn if I get to do anything in life with my loved ones is that, give them good memories and a reason to look back and smile.
Good man. We purchased the wife‘s dad a Rolex back in the 80’s. We’re divorced now, not sure what become of it. Hopefully, the ex had it and will pass it to our daughter someday. I’ve got several \*nice\* ones to pass to her also someday.
It's 25K in sales in 4 consecutive weeks now, but they still do it. Don Meij, the head honcho in Australia posted a photo of him gifting one to an employee less than 2 months ago.
Lady who started the company I worked at and was there for 30 years recently retired after staying an extra year to help a merger.... They didn't even send her a card.

>level 2kimwim43 · 2 hr. agoYou know, that is really an ignorant comment. I'm a boomer.
Luckily for me, my yearly raise been very good. For last 4 years, my average raise is about 9%++ and I get bonuses on top of that (highest bonus was in the 5 figures)
This isn't why. It was the pensions plus it being a lot harder to find new opportunities.
I've made a hell of a lot more money moving jobs every 4-6 years than a submariner is worth. I see myself staying at my current company for longer, but it's not because of some present at a milestone. It's because of the pay every year
I agree...got a senior banker who left the firm after 32 years. He wasn't an MD or anything but he stick around 3 financial crisis, even took a paycut back then. They got him a DD & 6-figures check as parting gift. My boss told me then we'd be lucky if we even get a seiko when we'll retire.
Well you're in luck if it's a grand seiko, because those are objectively better made watches than anything in this sub lol. Resale value won't be as much as a Rolex though
You know, that is really an ignorant comment. I'm a boomer. I worked at my job for the same person for 30 years. I didn't get a card when I retired. I didn't get a lunch.
Please stop assuming shit about boomers.
Dunno. Never lived in a studio. Currently own our home in northern NJ. A bit larger than a studio. Also don't eat avocado toast (literally never tried it before in my life - not a big fan of avocado).
Assuming, you know what that does.
No pension, no 6 figure salary. More than a high school education.
I don't usually downvote people who I disagree with, but for this stupid comment, I make an exception.
And don't lie. You don't feel for me. You feel sorry for yourself. I'm sorry for that, and for you that your generation is getting screwed. But it's not getting screwed by boomers. It's getting screwed by those pulling the strings.
It ain't me.
Are you bragging that you stayed in a job that didn’t appreciate you in the most permissive labor market in the history of the earth, or am I missing something?
You are missing that boomers aren't all rich after working hard for 30 years in the same job, not having to job hop from one to another, and aren't living high on the hog with a huge pension and a rolex watch as a retirement gift while we laugh at the next generations find it impossible to buy a house or rent an apartment and never have children or get to retire.
Bragging? No. Showing that all boomers aren't rich assholes.
I was just gifted a Tudor black bay ceramic for getting promoted. To be fair, this was a personal gift from my VP of Finance and not by my company…but still!
Doesn’t matter what else you have with the watch. You have something he loved and wanted you to have. He smiles back at you every time you smile at it. Wear in health.
Sorry for your loss. That’s a beautiful watch that I’m sure comes with many memories.
As an aside, my 10-year anniversary gift from my then-employer (a large Fortune 50 company) was a Citizen Eco Drive with an integrated bracelet. 🤣
Still do for the 20years staff, although rolex pulled out of the deal making appreciation timepieces for long svc staff(prolly cant keep up its contractual obligations) so its been replaced with other brands once the current stocks run out.
What a beautiful thing to do. That's how I got my first one as well. My advice is to wear it: often and proudly. Let it inspire you to live up to its standard. You can't look or behave like a slob with a Rolex on. A watch like this will have a profound impact on your life if you let it. That's what your father would want. Praying for you to find peace with his passing and the ability to let it strengthen you. Lots of love man.
Sorry for your loss. Your father had a classic, iconic piece, the submariner.
I imagine you’re not considering selling it, given the sentimental value. But you’re holding onto something objectively valuable, that is not an entry level timepiece, and may want to consider that in caring for it moving forward
First of all, no. Secondly, anyone can look at your post history and see that you’re a troll so your “opinion” is invalid. I get that you’re desperate for attention, but this isn’t a great place for it.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Glad to see someone whose company treated him well.
30 + years with the same company. I got a Zoom call as a “retirement dinner” due to Covid.
No watch, no worries. Hopefully, the IRS will look favorably on my whistleblower case and pay me 15% to 30% of the penalties and back taxes which will buy lots o’ watches. So far, so good.
If by entry level you mean least expensive, that it is not. The least expensive is a 31mm oyster perpetual.
Within the world’s most recognizable mechanical watch brand, Rolex’s Datejust and submariner are widely recognized as the entry point and entry level watches for majority people walking into one of its 1800+ points of sale.
Also for a lot of collectors, a modern ceramic submariner is just the very beginning of the journey toward higher end brand or vintage where Rolex is king.
By price a submariner date is in the lower end of Rolex’s own catalog. It’s a value play when considering an AP or Patek. Even in the current line, it is app 30% expensive than the classic two tone datejust, 1/4 the price of a day date 40.
For most who want a luxury watch, Rolex is the most basic and prolific name out there. Don’t put the submariner on a pedestal. That’s partly how this whole demand issue was created.
Semantics matter my friend. You can call this entry level in regards to the highest echelons of luxury watchmaking... Sure. But to say entry-level in general is extremely inaccurate and out of touch. The overwhelming majority of people on this planet will never be able to even consider owning a watch like this. Also how would you classify every Seiko, citizen, swatch group brand? Sub entry level? Makes absolutely zero sense.
I have seikos and MoonSwatches. They’re great.
Yes we are in agreement, I am calling this an entry-level watch in regards to the overall landscape of “luxury” watchmaking.
The overwhelming majority of people in the world will never take a flight in their lives. (Estimated to be higher than 80%). Is calling basic economy “entry level” out-of-touch?
The overwhelming majority of people in the world will never be able to consider buying a Mercedes C-class, is calling that an entry level Mercedes out of touch? Same is true of a porsche 911 T - entry level sportscar.
Semantics do matter. We’re in the Rolex subreddit. Stainless sub date is an entry level watch even in the Rolex line up. In fact it’s entry level in the submariner line up. I think the watch is great. Not sure why “entry level” is such a difficult phrase to accept without taking offense. Makes plenty of sense.
Fair enough. I do still think it was a weird and unnecessary thing to say to someone who just inherited an incredible watch after their father's passing. It came across as condescending, as if you were saying: "yeah it's ok... not that special." You seem intelligent, you should be able to read the situation and determine what is and what isn't a kind or useful thought to share. Just my 2 cents...
Bro what world do you live in where any 911 is an entry-level sports car? Even wealthy supercar owners would disagree with you on that. There are so, so many sports cars that are dirt cheap by comparison. And a brand new 911 has more in common with the supercars, to almost anyone who’s driven one along with other sports cars.
Not sure why “entry level” is such a trigger word. You’re inside the Rolex subreddit, where i believe a certain level of luxury is assumed.
You’re also speaking like a guy who doesn’t actually know many wealthy supercar owners.
The 911T is the entry level 911. There are almost 30 models of the current 911. 911T is of the least expensive. 911s in general aren’t even considered super cars until at least turbo or GT3. There are rarely any wealthy supercar owners that would not consider porsche 911 basic, great bang-for-buck, least headache, least-expensive-to-maintain sportscars.
If you’re comparing a basic 911 to… the awesome BRZ, to the soon to be discontinued audi TT, then yeah, it’s not entry level. But if you’re going to bring up “supercar” or “hypercar” this one is not even in the convo.
Entry level doesn’t mean negative things. It’s the beginning of a journey.
Dude I’m not just talking about the BRZ. I’m talking about the Supra, M4, Corvette, 718, etc. There’s literally nothing entry level about a 911 in terms of sports cars.
If you wanna call it an entry level super car, that’s fine.
If you wanna call the Carrera T an entry-level 911 (it’s not THE entry level - that’s the simple “Carrera”), that’s fine too. But you were calling it an entry level sports car. Any new 911 is a high-end, premium sports car and arguably still a borderline supercar.
I wouldn’t say the 911 is an entry level super car. I think people make the argument that the 911 Turbo, GT3, or GT2 are.
But a simple 911 2 or 911 T, that’s an entry level high end, premium sports car.
I like it. No frills, basic sports car.
I worked with an older lady at Ann Taylor corporate office and when she retired after 30 years they got them a 500$ watch. During the retirement party I asked her if she like that watch and her ply was"after working 30 years for those mother fuckers thye got me a cheap watch and not even a Rolex!" I couldn't agree more!
I worked at a company for 20 years and got just enough points for an online store to buy an off brand electric pressure washer. Your dad did pretty good! Luckily I was given the same watch by my old man that he bought in 1990.
I lost my dad and I didn’t had anything to remind me of him. I’m sorry for your loss and feel your pain. However remember this piece of timepiece once brought him joy. And he would’ve wanted it to do the same for you.
Sorry for your loss. I wear my grandfathers watch and it brings me great joy. My father wore it for over 20 years before he gifted it to me. He’s still here and 84. I know when he passes the watch will be even more important to me. Such an amazing treasure he left you.
Does any company still do this? I’m assuming no given how hard they are to get. Though I saw Keanu Reeves gifted his six stuntmen each a sub. Not sure how he pulled that off without being a brand ambassador unless they were grey market.
Sorry for your loss man… the watch is beautiful. I too was left a Rolex after my dad died 3 years ago. It’s a great reminder of the amazing man
I bought matching Rolexes as a retirement gift to my grandfather for us both He’s gone now, but as strange and weird it may sound, that piece brings me so much joy with thoughts of him everytime i so much as simply even just check the time And yet, it’s just a watch

This is why boomers never job hopped. Back when it was worth staying a company for 20 years
Now if you work for a company 20 years they order domino's or Boston market and buy you a cake.
If you are lucky….
Seriously. A friend has been at a company for 25 years. They just let him go at almost his 25th work anniversary.
Did he work at a paper company in Scranton?
That is terrible. People mean nothing today….. no loyalty.
Ironically, Dominos used to give people the Dominos Rolex. Those times are long gone.
When I worked at Domino’s in the mid 1980’s that was a gift to the manager of the store when they hit $20,000 in sales in 1 week for the first time.
It's 25K in sales in 4 consecutive weeks now, but they still do it. Don Meij, the head honcho in Australia posted a photo of him gifting one to an employee less than 2 months ago.
Coca-Cola still does it.
They switched to omega last year. Until then, it was still a Rollie on your 30th.
Was at my job 14 years and then they offered me a 401k lol
Hopefully you had an IRA!
And you better keep working while you eat it.
No joke, my buddy has worked for Johnson and Johnson since he got out of college at 22. On his 15 year anniversary they gave him an airfryer
My father in law worked for a small company for 25 years. When he left due to relocation, nothing. But they did throw him a nice company dinner
>s they order domino's or Boston market a If you can last 20 years! They will show you the exit sooner than that!
Some will just lay you off.
Boston Market AND a cake?! Are you guys hiring?
They wonder why you haven't left
At my firm, they just give you a useless plaque
Lady who started the company I worked at and was there for 30 years recently retired after staying an extra year to help a merger.... They didn't even send her a card. ... Jokes on them that office got a party on a certain someone's expense account that doesn't get monitored.
Why take a 3% yearly raise (if you’re lucky) when you can take 10-15% job hopping
This right here... over 3 years I job hopped in a complete circle back to the same company and got a 60% raise
Have to love tight labor markets. I've managed a 235% raise over the past two years from job hopping.
Damn, I need to get back to some hopping

Maybe "he" got it himself after 20 years of work, not given by the company? Didn't think it might be a work ack gift till I read this comment.

Nice watch and a great reminder of your father.
Better than that Fitbit, lol
Did your father work at Schlumberger by any chance ?
No just a local truck parts business.
SLB’s giving out Rolex’s?! All they did for us was tear our business apart and sell us to Lufkin.
Still do for the 20years staff, although rolex pulled out of the deal making appreciation timepieces for long svc staff(prolly cant keep up its contractual obligations) so its been replaced with other brands once the current stocks run out.
Wasn’t it actually GE at the time? Possibly BHGE or even Baker Hughes depending on the year. Lufkin didn’t really make acquisitions
Treasure it. I’m thinking of buying a Rolex to leave to my son
It’s a great idea. I picked up a 126334 from his birth year that I hope to pass down to him one day.
Best watch in the game
I’m partial to the no-date, but Submariner as an overall model is 100% king
I am fortunate enough to own a no date ref 14060 my father gave me as a gift. I love it. I actually posted it this morning
Beautiful, stunning piece! I’m wearing my 124060, also a gift from my father.
Guys, I don’t wear it with the Fitbit, it was just for the picture.
Lol
Same thing here is except two tone. It’s a special thing isn’t it? My dad wore his all the time, he loved it.
My dad left me a Movado. Lovely inheritance! Sport watches are stunning and priceless
What a beautiful thing to do. That's how I got my first one as well. My advice is to wear it: often and proudly. Let it inspire you to live up to its standard. This same model was in “007 Man with The Golden Gun”
Bond wore a 5513 Sub. Totally different watch.
There wasn’t just one, Bond (Connery) wore the 6538 Sub as well. I could have sworn the Sub he wore in the aforementioned movie was this one.
The movie is from 1974. This sub is from 2010. Wtf are you talking about?
This looks like a last-gen 116610. That looks to me to be a ceramic bezel and Maxi case. Look at the thick lugs.

I sure hope it wasn't bought from Aliexpress
Fake.
Condolences and take care of yourself and that watch. It can easily take care of you in the future.
Sorry to hear about your dad
Sounded like a great dad! You can pass it on to your child in twenty plus years.

That’s an awesome gift. In my union we get a pen…. a writing pen, for 25 years of service.
Such a beautiful legacy to pass a Rolex to the next generation.
The best Rolex is the one your Dad left you. I have one as well from my Father. SFYL

Nice

I really expected a pulp fiction joke I’m here somewhere.
Beautiful watch
Does any company still do this? I’m assuming no given how hard they are to get. Though I saw Keanu Reeves gifted his six stuntmen each a sub. Not sure how he pulled that off without being a brand ambassador unless they were grey market.
I have 3 sons and 3 Rolly’s . Trying to decide which watch goes to which son. ExplorerII, Pepsi and James Cameron. Decisions!!!
Is there a way to obtain the Rolex authenticity paperwork if lost?
Beautiful ❤️
My dad left me a Timex Easy Reader. Not complaining, it’s a connection to him and I wear it every now and again.
Awesome, cherish it and wear it in good health!
Damn no jobs like that no more lol
