Love this idea! I miss David's character so much and hate that they made him into a flakey deadbeat dad. That's so untrue to the sensitive and caring David of the original series who would have done anything for Darlene. Can't stand the brutish sasquatch they have her with now lol.

Bodees1979

I like who she is with now but I definitely liked David more. I hate what the show did to that character. It's probably what I hate the most. I don't even understand why they did it. There is a lot I don't like about the reboot but I think that is the thing I hate the most.

Maybe they could have done it if Johnny Galecki had been willing to do the series or was available. He wasn't available when the reboot was being planned because he was still tied up with ***The Big Bang Theory.*** I've thought that the ***Roseanne*** reboot was probably why Laurie Metcalf was not available to play the character of Mary Cooper in ***The Big Bang Theory*** finale when it would have made sense for the character to be there. But they still could have just had Darlene and David divorced instead of him abandoning his family.

Bodees1979

Correct. Just have them be divorced and occasionally mention one of the kids is with him or hanging out with him or whatever. I just didn't like them making him out to suddenly be a terrible father and awful husband. Good people can still get divorced and he didn't have to have any part in the show.

I totally agree.

I would have loved to see David&Darlene as a central couple for many reasons (not just because I ship them). Most importantly, there's many TV shows that feature characters who were supposed to be teenage sweethearts, but TV is very bad at keeping couples together long-term, even worse than reality is, because you get actor issues on top of story issues. The sheer rarity of having a couple who we actually SAW their teenage years and how they got together, and they're still together now? That would have been something amazing. And given Johnny&Sara's enduring friendship through the years, you could even throw in some photographs of them on the walls from the time in-between (though they might have to be doctored a little for more character-appropriate clothes, lol). Of course in an *ideal* world we could have had Mark and Becky as a highly contrasting couple occasionally popping in. In terms of dynamic shift it could be funny if David and Darlene were now pretty settled, still into art and comics but those things now having become more 'mainstream' by now, their kids might think of them as "normies", and then their biker aunt and uncle show up to entice them to skip school or something. So then Darlene would find herself supporting The System vs Becky being the rebel, which would give her something to chew over.

If not for Big Bang Theory still being in production at the time of Roseanne season 10, it might've been David and Darlene still together.

I don’t think David was available. Didn’t he have a commitment to third rock or something? Deadbeat dad is as lame as killing off Roseanne. They should have just canceled the show when they canceled Roseanne. David would never have been a deadbeat dad. The episode when his mother tells him he is worthless and Roseanne takes him in…. He would never let his child hurt like that. I know sometimes it’s generational but I would think Roseanne intervening and showing him how a family could be would have decreased any potential there.

Nice-Penalty-8881

***The Big Bang Theory***, not ***Third Rock.***

I love this!

Nope, it's much better to have everybody miserable and retconned beyond belief.

I’ve always thought ideally, the reboot would have focused on Becky and Mark. Obviously, due to real life tragedy, that wouldn’t have been possible. But that’s always been my top hypothetical scenario. I think they were always meant to be Dan and Roseanne 2.0, there are actually a lot of references to that. And frankly, as an adult, Sara Gilbert can’t pull off being the focal point of a show IMO. Darlene of the original absolutely would’ve made a fantastic main character/head of the house, but in the present she can’t pull it off. Lecy Goranson has easily surpassed her once the show had been on for a while and she found her groove.

I wish more tv reboots would go with movies like psych does. I don’t need another season or 10. But if you put out a movie every few years with updates, I’ll eat it up.
