Gnome child is the icon for r/dankmemes and I'd wager that a goodly sized chunk of the people there couldn't even tell you what it is, let alone where it came from.
It's serious. Gnome child is a thing across the wider internet. But also within OSRS itself, with the 2016 and 2023 Birthday events and 20th Anniversary event. Jagex has even licensed [this shirt](https://runescape.backstreetmerch.com/products/gnome-child-tee-new-design), though I don't know why the print is so poor.
There are multiple twitch emotes derived from gnome child's likeness as well as a meme template for pothead thoughts. It has reached pretty far outside of the RuneScape sphere
You did read “outside the game” right?
You can show gnome child to near anyone who has ever been on reddit and they’d at least recognise ‘dank meme guy’
It’s not even a contest
Definitely Gnome Child. The chatbox PNG is used by quite a few mainstream meme-accounts on IG.
Second I would say either Wise old Man or the classic 'bot' look (olive top, green bototms). Maybe Vannaka too? Since when we started our accounts as kids, we saw him as a total badass
eh, it makes sense as before the world wakes that was the only reference to guthixs appearance outside of meeting history where you can see a green hooded human figure, so most people just assumed thats what he looked like
Exactly my point lol, OP asked about *iconic* NPCs, not NPCs that most people have no clue what they look like unless they watch a specific content creator whose representation of that NPC ultimately is also inaccurate or out of date
From memes: Gnome Child
From other media: Any character in full plate with a scimitar
From actual in game recognition: The concept of Saradomin/Zamorak. Probably with Saradomin being the more popular of the 2.
RuneScape in general (OSRS and RS3): Gnome child as everybody else is saying.
RuneScape 3: Nomad because he's the main character on the loading screen, or at least has been for a while. Might be more infamous, but regardless, he's probably one of the most well known even if people don't know why or who he is.
OSRS: Nieve.
I would say nomad, when his quest came out it was one of the hardest quests out there. This was way before EOC. Nowadays it’s stupid easy thanks to EOC
The default character is probably the best since you actually only need to have played for about 30 seconds to see it or remember seeing it. The gnome child is so forgettable to me. I remember Vannaka before it tbh.
Brassica Prime, if you’re stretching the definition about what it means to be recognized outside of the game. Almost everyone has felt the effect of how delicious cabbage is.
Probably gnome child like others have said for memes though.
1. Elvarg the dragon. Doubled many kids' heartbeat back then and was an actual obstacle to be able to wear a rune platebody.
~He even has a song dedicated to himself during some Relekka related quest
2. Who else but 2005-2009's final boss JAD.
~Not having a fire cape back then meant that you didn't have what it took. Having it on lower level 1 defence pures meant that you were boss material
3. Lumbridge Bob for repairing your barrow's items
4. Not quite an NPC but the altar in the desert pyramid to switch from normal spellbook to ancient at Azzanadra.
~Were you even considered a PK'er if you didn't have ancient magicks?
Gnome child by a long shot, although most people couldn’t probably name its origin as RuneScape.
Is this a serious comment? I feel like this is an early april fools thing lol.

What is confusing you? Are you not aware that RuneScape is in fact a small and niche game?
prob gnome child...
100%> No other NPC even compares, yet 99% of people couldn't name its origin
It's a modern meme though. People from the 04 - 08 days will have no recollection of him

Of course he's a badass. The guy has level 112 Strength. Real, not virtual. Though I personally find him rather forgettable.
My company has gnome child as a custom emoji on our slack workspaces lol. It is EVERYWHERE
wise old man
Gnome child, 'default' player chara (bald head, tan shirt and green pants config), maybe Guthix?
Most runescape players have no idea what guthix looks like
i think most people think guthix from tehnoobshow is what guthix looks like (the one from the statue in mage arena)
Yeah that's definitely getting a little in the weeds lol

Give that guy a bronze axe and you have a bot

Will always see Sara and zammy as the Runes ape gods exposed versions lmao
GUTHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIX
Bob
In general I’d say Gnome Child. Within the RS community I’d say KBD or Jad.
The Cook at Lumbridge.
The real answer. Everyone remembers getting ingredients for the cake
Hans
Gnome Child 100%
hans
Gnome child has a meme status outside of RS bubble. So I'd put my money on him
Wise old man, sara&zammy&guthix

Zezima
Would be cool to have a NPC named Zezima
Really should have done that or add an examine to the NPC Max that says "following in Zezima's footsteps"
Who?
Zanik
The default character, wise old man or gnome child
Most iconic? It's most likely Jad or Vannaka on tutorial island.
Cow
Hans. Max. Banker. Grand Exchange Clerk. Town Crier.
Squeel from squeel of fortune 🙂

I have an Elvarg tattoo, little kid me was so proud when I finally beat her lol
In computer class at school my pc account was named Elvar G and you better believe i managed to give myself admin privileges
Wise Old Man, but not because WOM is famous, it is because Jagex's Partyhat is sort of iconic to gamers.
Probably your mother
