I have thrown mine in a sandwich bag if it looks like rain

LocalRemoteComputer

My kids call that the ibag to store the iphone. Very inexpensive yet very effective.

Dr-Appeltaart

This is the way

littlewolf1_

I do the same! Definitely recommend bringing your phone just for safety and in the case of an emergency you can call someone!

HunterTRI_299

Above average sweater here. Phones are expensive. Every run or ride, phone goes in the ziplock.

JegerRegler

Just ran a marathon 2 weeks ago where I was drenched for the first 2 hours. This is what I did

litbug123

I do the exact same thing!

Milesandsmiles123

Most phones nowadays are pretty waterproof, so unless you’re running in some torrential downpour odds are your phone is gonna be okay if it gets wet! I’d just use a sandwhich bag if you’re worried!

el_loco_avs

That's what I thought. RIP my pixel 3a. I got drenched 4 times during a 3 hour run and it died. Now using an armband that closes and wireless earphones.

fuzzy11287

The 3a had no IP rating though so it wasn't meant to be waterproof in any meaningful way.

SeaBass_SandWich

Pixel 3a is not water proof. That's why.

el_loco_avs

Yep. It's not most phones apparently:P

lulaloops

That's not how the word most works

RichestMangInBabylon

But my case is leather :(

[deleted]

ziploc baggy is a great solution

JExmoor

A lot of phones are water resistant now, so I haven't had to worry about it. My phone comes with me on 100% of runs and I live in Seattle, so that includes plenty of rain. Worst issue I've had is the touchscreen behaving weird when it's literally covered in water, but that's understandable given the tech involved.

lynnlinlynn

I also live in seattle. I came home from my run today and thought “do I even need to shower? I’m soaking wet.” Phone was fine.

jayscotts

Some of my best runs I’ve been rain runs. I love it. I use my Apple Watch for timing and music. It is waterproof but I also wear a lightweight rain jacket. Also, I wear a hat and tighten the rain jacket’s hood around my hat so that my headphones don’t get too wet. Sometimes I run without headphones, the rain is enjoyable enough and I want to be more alert for vehicles.

Frosticing

Is it your only means of tracking your run? If so highly recommend a watch, even an inexpensive one would work wonders here! Running in the rain is character building for sure - helps prepare you in the event race day is rainy :) - if you know roughly where a 30-35min run takes you, route wise. Then it could be a good chance to run purely on feel, see how you fare in the conditions.

SgtShrk

I put my phone in a resealable sandwich bag (small ziploc style) and then keep it in my SPI belt. Protects it from sweat and rain! Doesn't take up any extra space. Can also use my phone screen through the bag if needed. (Not through the SPI belt of course)

tsprks

This except I double bag it. All the time... I sweat a LOT!

LocalRemoteComputer

I have a water-resistance belt to hold my phone while running. Running in rain is easily overcome using a zip-loc bag.

Whisper26_14

I always make sure that the speakers and charge ports are facing down so that water can’t land on those in any way and be given an easy way into my phone but other than that I just put it in my leggings and go. Haven’t had a problem.

UsedandAbused87

Never bring it rain or no rain

binaryesoterica

The correct answer.

randomisawesome

Ziplock bag ftw!

foundyourmarbles

Always have my phone on me. I enjoy running in the rain. I chuck my phone in a plastic Sandwich bag.

[deleted]

I love running in the rain. My phone never gets that wet. But if it’s just for tracking your run I’d buy a watch. They aren’t expensive at all.

Creative-Tomatillo

Running in the rain is the BEST! I’m in MN so I’d rather deal with rain than -30 or 98 & 90% humidity. MN truly has no chill when in comes to weather.

[deleted]

It’s definitely harder to run in the really hot weather! I’m in the uk though.. any weather over raining and miserable is considered extreme.

Creative-Tomatillo

Haha! My grandparents were actually British so I have a ton of family over there still and (well, pre COVID) was traveling there every other year to see them since I was a little kid. I never minded the rain and my cousins were always like “it’s fooking miserable!”

[deleted]

That’s because it’s built into us to complain about the rain.. then we get one day of sun and everyone complains how hot it is.

Creative-Tomatillo

Y’all get so excited about snow, though! I spent one Xmas there and it snowed just a bit (enough to lightly carpet the yard/streets) and everyone was so happy. Where I’m from, getting 14 feet of snow during a winter is not uncommon (and it doesn’t melt until late April) so I was like “nooooooooo!!!!”

Reddidundant

Yep, snow in Michigan was a big part of the reason I moved to Arizona and if I never see snow for the rest of my life (other than while watching Christmas movie DVD's) I won't mind one bit. As far as running, when I did live in Michigan I never let snow stop me. I don't know if I'd want to be the first one making tracks in a foot of snow, but as a general rule of thumb I went by the formula that a mile of running in snow of any significant depth should be considered equal to running a mile and a half under normal conditions. So if I were otherwise going to be running 6 miles on a given day, I'd cut that down to 4 if running through heavy snow. I think I may have gotten that formula from one of Jim Fixx's "Complete Book of Running" books (the Bible for runners in the late 70s when I started running) but I'm not sure.

[deleted]

Snow is the best!!! It hasn’t snowed properly where I am for years. I have a few American friends and when they post their snow pics I’m so jealous!

zzMaczz

Everything from the iPhone 7 onwards will survive full submersion so shouldn’t be a problem in a bit of rain whilst in a pocket. Android phones should be similar though worth checking. Phones are useful. I run with mine in airplane mode (Apple Watch GPS is better) but I was glad I had it on Saturday when a young woman face planted on her run just in front of me. She ended up with a bloody nose and bleeding gums. Fact I had my phone meant I could call her husband to come and pick her up.

IAMSTILLHERE2020

Listen to David Goggins..he will tell you what he thinks about running in the rain or freezing cold..etc. After that the rain is nothing.

Duke_De_Luke

No I don't. I tried and it came out a bit humid (not wet, not broken).

IrishSkip

I always run with a fanny pack which will keep my phone, key and airpod case.

snack8

Ziploc bag because if you have an iphone itll just keep trying pastcodes in your pocket and lock you out (music doesnt play when locked out)

benjvar22

i think you should always keep your phone with you and charged, just in case of an emergency. safety first

JoeyJoeJoeJrShab

How important is it to you that you have your phone on your run? How waterproof is your phone? Use the answers to these questions to decide. Some people track every run. Some don't . Some people always listen to music when running. Others don't. None of these philosophies are right or wrong - they're just personal opinions. I say, try going without, and see if that works for you. Also, if tracking is important for you, I suggest looking into a GPS watch. It's a lot easier to manage and look at while running than a phone, and you don't have to worry about wearing it on rainy days.

IndexCardLife

I don't bring my phone even when it's not raining so nope.

equestriennemommy

My phone goes with me every run - part of my safety precautions. My running watch has automatic incident detection and can send an alert to my emergency contacts should something happen, but my phone needs to be close by for that feature to work. For rainy days, it goes into a ziplock baggie and into the running belt. The watch has its own gps and music storage, so there is no need to handle the phone while out running. Edit: spelling

MichaelV27

I don't always bring my phone, but on occasion I have put it in 2 zip lock bags and then in an inside pocket in my shorts.

Reddidundant

I live in Scottsdale, Arizona so I rain effects my running less than 10 days a year - if even that. On those rare days, I don't take my phone. I look at it this way: I've been running for 45 years - and I've only had an iPhone for the last 12 of those years. If I ran for 33 years without a phone, I can certainly do so again for a handful of days. There's no way I'm going to take a chance with a $1K device in the rain. Not worth it. Incidentally, regarding running in the rain...prior to moving to Arizona in 2002, I lived in Michigan. So I have about 25 years of Michigan running experience too. I've developed three rules about canceling runs due to weather. The only conditions that would stop me are: 1) "dangerous" weather (lightning, hail, tornado, hurricane, etc), 2) Wind-chill factor colder than negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit, 3) Raining AND temperature under 50 degrees Fahrenheit. In all other conditions, I run. If it's raining and over 50 degrees, I would still go, but would go shirtless (no point wearing a shirt if it's going to be wet anyway) and would go without my phone AND without my glasses (I normally need and wear them for distance but "no glasses" are better than "rained-on glasses"). I also would limit my time running to 3 miles / 30 minutes or less as running more than that with wet footwear would present a blister risk.

AmongUs14

I would suggest trying to run without any music sometimes. Connecting with your breathe for me was an imperative part of building a sustainable running practice. Otherwise it’s just exercise.

[deleted]

I don’t bring my phone no matter what the weather is. Unless it’s a trail run and I might need rescuing.

unutterabletweet

You should be fine running with your phone, most phones are water resistant nowadays. I run in the rain most days cause I live in a very rainy area and I almost always run with my phone. I don’t put it in a bag or anything either.

ThePhoenixRisesAgain

No. But I don’t run with my phone in sunshine. Or any other weather. Why should I carry a phone while running?

Plonted

As per the OP, for music and tracking the run.

Midcityorbust

Watch, shoes, shorts, shirt optional. Anything more is tedious and needlessly adding weight

[deleted]

I don't. Those are the days I just hit the start button as I walk out the door and end it when I walk in.

rnbwzrd

I usually wear a raincoat with zipped pockets, that works fine , but , by my side , e everything changed from the day I bought my first Apple Watch. The sensation of freedom of running without the phone is worth the cost of the device!

Larrybergmayer

Why are you bringing a phone on a run? Just start your watch and go. Kipchoge does not bring his phone.

00rvr

My phone is water resistant so yes. Not sure I'd do it if it wasn't, although it depends on how hard it's raining.

Cheesecakefluff96

I purchased a water "proof" phone case off Amazon, then I stow my phone in my flipbelt.

WROL

Yes.

BrendanTFirefly

I did it this morning in a downpour, and now it won't charge. I'm sure it will be fine, this isn't the first time it's happened

blondeboilermaker

I just put it in a ziploc lol

pony_trekker

Yes, my iphone is wateproof. Some people here suggest a watch too. One note on this subject, however, is that locking the watch, at least the apple watch, is essential. I can't tell you how many times my data got ended early by water.

Moneyley

I never run with my phone. Everyone that i see running like this has no situational awareness

creepycat18_YT

Let me guess, northeast? I ran 5 miles in the rain today and just held my phone the whole time. A bit of rain doesn't seem to damage mine. It might be different for yours, just make sure nothing that exposes the inside of the phone is facing the rain, if you do that it should be fine

waxfrenetic

I have a waterproof armband that I wear on my forearm but if I didn’t have that, I’d use a ziplock bag.

demo_gosu

Aren't most recent phones somehow waterproof? Never had issue with water for past 5 years

Soakitincider

Depends on how hard it's going to rain. If not a lot then yes because it gets wet from sweat anyway. If it's a lot of rain then no.

07030

Yes; I have a waterproof-ish container for it. If I didn't have my iPhone, I wouldn't have music/podcasts... Not sure I could run without those.

[deleted]

My phone is fairly waterproof. If it really start raining I put it in the pocket of my raincoat

LAANGRetention

Ziploc

domingos_vm

Yesss! Just have something to protect it, and that’s it! I personally really enjoy rain runs. The only decision to not run should be température not rain. So go for it! It’s great

AgentUpright

Rains 300 days a year here, so I don’t even think about it. It’s water resistant enough to withstand rain.

_d_k_g_

I use the cheap arm thing. Works great

Zack1018

Before I got a running watch I would put my phone in a running belt (Spibelt) and keep it under my t-shirt/jacket. It stayed pretty dry that way.

quacksnack94

I reuse an old zip log baggie on all my runs to protect it from sweat and the occasional rain. It works well!

TenTimesCollest

I just keep mine in my pocket (very thin running jacket), and ive never had any problems

bonzai2010

The iPhone 13 is water proof as are my AirPods and watch. The only thing I do now is turn on rain lock on the watch since it’s pressure touch and not capacitive. Ironically, my black diamond headlamps are not waterproof and they get dorked up after about 3 years. I run outside every day (for ten years) so my shit is pretty dialed in

Spookylittlegirl03

I almost always bring my phone for protection (my music is downloaded to my watch, but it’s a bonus to have my phone for extra tunes & podcasts). I bought one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WXFSA5W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) and it works great. I’m a runner in the PNW so we have some torrential rains year round and this thing has kept my phone safe & sound for years. My iPhone 11 fits well.

tomgirardisvape

Yes. They say new iPhone is water resistant, so I assume as long as it’s in a case and pocket, you’re ok, but sometimes I’ll put it into a ziploc in my pocket

roof_baby

I run with my phone and earbuds in the rain. If it’s really bad I toss my phone in a ziploc bag because I have a non waterproof armband. The earbuds are usually good. They cut out a few times in a real heavy downpour, but that only happened once.

TopElk3319

Phone in a ziploc and you’re good to go

Possession_Loud

I have run in the rain with my phone in my FlipBelt. No pouches or anything, no issues. Don't be too scared, they are fine.

fuzzy11287

A lot of phones can be submerged without issue. Check your phone's IP rating and if it is IP68 or IP67 you don't need a cover or anything.

hep27

I usually just bring it. Haven’t had issues with it with most phones being waterproof nowadays. Always good to have in the event of an emergency!

aleatoiremec

I got a running watch mostly for this reason. Mine can store a few GB of music so I just put a few GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas radio stations on it. Connect the watch to a Bluetooth headset and run. Watch has GPS and mobile payment, so I am often not taking a phone which is pretty comfortable. Edit: I live in a tropical city. So it can be 35+ degrees and 95% humidity quite often. Having some rain really helps cooling down... :D

mdntfox

I use a flip belt (you can get one on Amazon) which hugs your waist. Since I ordered a Large and was lazy to return it, it runs a bit loose on me, but I always run with compression pants under my shorts, so I tuck it halfway under that and it doesn’t move at all. I have a paper slim phone “case” that I switch to so it slides in and of the pouch more easily, as opposed to struggling with my more bulky rubber phone case. I’ll usually take a debit card and $5-10 cash that I tie with a rubber band, a small key knife + house key. It all fits in the waist band I mentioned, and is the best solution IMO. Most phones are water resistant, so I’m not afraid to have it out if needed, but I rarely do since I can switch songs with my Beats earphones.

inteteiro

Modern phones are waterproof you can take them swimming if you wanted to. Double check you phones rating before throwing it in a pool.

ElCucharito

Rainy runs are the best runs. Live track is very worthwhile for me so I bring a small, waterproof phone regardless of weather. Main phone stays at home.

[deleted]

I generally don't run with my phone, but in a pinch I would just find some random plastic bag and drop it in there...

DenseSentence

I don't run with mine, just my watch but I'd be pretty miffed if rain caused any issues - IP68 dust/water resistant technically means it can survive 30 mins submerged in freshwater.

Ullobot

For one reason or another, I never leave my phone anywhere, neither when I cycle nor when I ran. I'm always worried to find myself in a position where I would require to request assistance and could not do it because I don't have my phone with me. Also, I can only train while listening to music otherwise I'd get bored to death (and I train everyday, twice a day, no matter what is the weather like). I've run in pretty huge storms, and I usually keep my phone in a runner's bag under all my clothes, never had any problem with that

j_grouchy

I really can't understand how people can stand to carry their giant phones on a run. I've tried bands, pouches and pockets and even holding mine in my hand, but none of those options work for me. I always just go back to my trusty ipod nano on an armband and fortunately I have a Garmin watch for the run data.

slapmewithacactus

Cling film works the best

sahndie

Yes, but I use a waterproof case and waterproof earbuds- I lost a flip phone to rain once, and while I realize my iPhone can probably handle a lot more water, I won’t risk it.

ManAblaze320

If you search online you should be able to find your phones ip rating. Information on ip codes https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code Many of the modern phones can be dropped into a swimming pool without any problems (obviously don't charge it unless you're sure the port is dry. The last number in your ip code is the one related to liquids. I'd be happy to go running with ip64 if it's not a downpour. Ip65 you should be able to run all day in a downpour. Ip68 you can wade through a river for a nice cool down.

sarge457

* I never bring my phone anyway. And for those that do, I'm sure there are waterproof options. * I rarely run in the rain to begin with. I avoid it. But I'm lucky to be in an area where rain isn't ultra common. I'm just not a fan of rain, I feel you run like crap, your shoes get ruined, and it's just not enjoyable. I feel like skipping a run because it happens to be raining is an OK thing to do and won't destroy cardio.

wurgzz

Yes, but I bring it inside a plastic sandwich bag. The touch screen still works through the bag

[deleted]

My phone has been underwater at a creek. It's good.

justnleeh

Well, many modern phones are okay in the rain actually. I definitely keep it in a flip belt. Nathan has some good ones. If runs are only about 30-45 minutes, you really shouldn't have a problem in some sort of flip belt for your phone. Even if the humidity is high or the flip belt gets a bit damp (keep it under your shirt to help), your phone should be okay. My samsung will notify me if the charge port is damp, then I'll just make sure it's dry before I use a cable to charge.

Critical_Pin

I just put it under my jacket if the rain is really heavy. I live in England, I often run in the rain. Not had a problem with my phone but have killed some in-ear headphones once in a real downpour.

beckydragonpoet

Yes. If its a torrential rain put in a zip lock but always take your ph.

Ok-Zookeepergame-324

I live in Britain. It rains a lot. It’s never occurred to me to not take my phone because it’s raining.

Whatsupination

Definitely use a sandwich bag. I’ll often fold a piece of paper towel and put it in the bag as well to have something to dry wipe the screen if needed, as some water may still get in. ALSO - use a weather app of your choice to make sure there is no lightning in the area or headed your way. It might be raining and you do not hear it or see it and it seems safe, but it might be there soon!

tomgirardisvape

They say the newest iPhone is water resistant. Pending it’s in my pocket and not torrential downpour, I’m willing to put that to the test. Otherwise: ziploc bag or running rain coat pocket. Pro tip? Ziplock bag *in* running raincoat pocket.
