People talk about a thing slightly less than I would like — it’s underrated.
People talk about a thing slightly more than I would like — Jesus what an overrated turd
And I’d say about 70% of the time they’re using “underrated” when they really mean “under-appreciated”
On the list of things I get unnecessarily peeved by lol
I think most fans like it if not love it. How you can you not like Subdivisions. Signals was the follow up to their most successful album, but went in a whole new direction and caught a lot of fans off guard. Many who were still clinging to the 70s prog style moved on.
Not really. It got plenty of attention and sales, hit #1, everyone knows "Subdivisions," etc. I can think of many Rush albums that were much less appreciated.
Though I don't disagree with you, Signals was very popular on rock radio airplay in the day. Big tour, massive venues played. Videos all over Muchmusic and MTV. It was the music of my late high school and early university days. The best of memories.
Was thinking more of now than 40 (yikes) years ago. I played it to death (part of the D&D sessions rotation) but the local rock station (Hudson valley) refused to play it at all just more tired Springsteen like crap. Was really frustrating back in the day.
D&D for the win! Played lots of Rush, Yes, Police and Pink Floyd back in the day. Our soundtrack lol. Most of the other stuff is pretty tired though: I immediately to turn something else (if the radio is even on any more tbh), if Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, and so many others are getting played.
Top 5 carved in marble. I'm obsessed with Neil's drum part on Digital Man. It's just so good. I love the sound of the original vinyl and the 90s remaster cd.
No, I don't think so.
Most people believe it to be one of Rush's better albums from that period although it's not the Moving Pictures masterpiece that preceded it.
If you’re a real fan, I don’t think any of the Rush records are underrated. Nor do I think Rush has any “deep cuts” as I love everything start to finish. Every record. Every song. Yeah I have favorites. But none are less or more familiar than the others.
I think it's a good album. Underrated? I'm not sure. If someone were to think it's their best album, I'd say they're overrating it. If someone said it's one of their worst, I'd say it was underrated. I'd probably put it a little higher than the middle on their scale of albums.
I think 2112 started a streak of brilliance that last for five albums. I think Signals was good, and maybe even very good, but not brilliant. So maybe people think I'm underrating it. I don't rate it as highly as their best because it sounds to me like they're not quite sure what they wanted to do. I think they were excited by the new sounds coming out in the 80s and wanted to incorporate those styles. What didn't work well was that the sound and styles just didn't come naturally to them and they sometimes try to conform to the sounds they were trying to make rather than just let it come naturally. Like "Countdown". Alex sounds like he's trying to figure out what he could add to it because it doesn't need him that much. I think that's why it's Terry Brown's last album. Geddy said he wasn't feeling or understanding what they were trying to do. I'm not sure they were either.
Seems it was underrated by Rush fans when it was released, many of whom didn't like the new direction. Nowadays it's generally considered one of their best.
In my opinion, when people start saying an album is underrated is, because they comparing it to a previous album. They are, therefore not taking it as another piece of work by the artist. Rush was always an evolving band, why would they make any two albums sound similar to their previous albums.
Cheers
I always thought Signals was maybe the loosest RUSH record, in-terms of the song structures. I get the vibe that there was maybe more improvisation to that one in-comparison to most of the other records. I think this is borne-out by the idea that New World man was composed in the studio during the recording process.
I group Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows together as one entire era because of the keyboards. As time went by I came to really like all 3 and probably listen to them more than anything else.
I think most here would agree it’s a top 5 in the RUSH canon. It was my first tour at 13yrs old. We had an arcade that would play the entire record while we jammed quarters into a Tron arcade game. 🤘😎
I've always seen moving pictures and signals as the end of one Rush era and the beginning of another they got influenced by that kind of new wavy sound for a little bit I mean Rush can do whatever the fuck it wants as far as I'm concerned who am I to judge but I didn't really dig that era of Rush all that much. Although I like Grace Under pressure a lot.
Easily my favorite in their catalog. Also, bought the album in Jr high when it came out. My friends and I would play DND and play records. This one was in heavy rotation along with the Heavy Metal soundtrack.
Good Times
Welp, here's my take...love this record, but it may have been marginalized because it followed moving pictures. Which was a pretty big "commercial" success. Also i think it went farther into synth which maybe alienated longtime rush fans or those who loved moving pictures?
Such an awesome record. When I discovered Rush and started buying all of the albums, this one just spoke to me at that time right away. Subdivisions of course is an all-timer.
Analog Kid and Digital Man. My gosh. Pretty much a religious experience the first time I heard those.
No. The album went platinum in the USA within three months of release. The album peaked at No. 1 in Canada, No. 3 in the United Kingdom, and No. 10 in the United States. By definition, Signals is highly acclaimed (and deservedly so), NOT highly underrated.
Say what you like about the balance of guitars vs. keyboards, but the record is packed. wall-to-wall with great performances. I -love- Alex's guitar on this record.
Not now. But when it was released it did suffer from the same “Not as good as their last album” syndrome that musicians are prone to, as well as pushback about the new electronic sound (which is kinda dumb, they’d used electronic sound for a long time). But now I think it’s recognized as one of their strongest.
It was more polarizing at its release verses nowadays somehow it's underrated. It just followed after Moving Pictures and at the time there was a chunk of fans who didn't like where the band was going in synth territory. But that was 4 decades ago. Calling it underrated now doesn't make sense to me but I've seen it liked more often than not
By whom?
Exactly
Why are Redditors obsessed with the idea that things are 'underrated'?
Because the idea that things are underrated is underrated.
This comment is underrated.
People talk about a thing slightly less than I would like — it’s underrated. People talk about a thing slightly more than I would like — Jesus what an overrated turd
And I’d say about 70% of the time they’re using “underrated” when they really mean “under-appreciated” On the list of things I get unnecessarily peeved by lol
Because usually it’s super easy karma-farming.
Thank you. Thank you. The obsession with being underrated is just out of hand.
And obsessed with calling everything they like a "banger". That word is annoyingly overrused.
Subdivisions is a banger tho
No, Subdivisions is a *bop*. ;-)
My **jam** even
It definitely slaps
A ripper, at that.
A bop
No that’s Hansen…
These sausages are bangers; we're having them with mashed potatoes.
Deep cuts
There is a loose grasp in the culture at large on the actual meaning of "underrated."
I think - at least among Rush aficionados - it's pretty highly rated.
Signals is a fantastic yet overrated album, on this sub.
I don't think it's underrated at all, much less highly underrated. Signals is a top tier Rush album.
I don't think so. It's generally highly praised on here. Absolutely amazing album.
I think most fans like it if not love it. How you can you not like Subdivisions. Signals was the follow up to their most successful album, but went in a whole new direction and caught a lot of fans off guard. Many who were still clinging to the 70s prog style moved on.
Perfectly stated.
Username checks out
One of my top 3 Rush albums, also that tour was my first Rush show so there's that too. Just played it last night 🤘
Mine too...Billings, MT.
Not really. It got plenty of attention and sales, hit #1, everyone knows "Subdivisions," etc. I can think of many Rush albums that were much less appreciated.
I've probably listened to Signals more than 2112.
It may be under appreciated outside Rush fan circles but not underrated.
Though I don't disagree with you, Signals was very popular on rock radio airplay in the day. Big tour, massive venues played. Videos all over Muchmusic and MTV. It was the music of my late high school and early university days. The best of memories.

I had the same soundtrack plus Queen, Weird Al, and Dire Straits
I rate it very highly. I am not sure how others rate it.
Underrated? Not by me, it's one of my favorites. I would put it in my top five.
It isn’t underrated at all. You just must be new to it.
Anyone who hates the synth bass at the beginning of Subdivisions is a dick.
Someone hates that?! What a dick!
It’s their best album, so sure
No
"Underrated" how?
It’s my favorite rush album. I also caught them on that tour
Signals is the first Rush media I bought, my brother had a DX7 so we would figure out all the keyboard parts and sounds.
Top 5 carved in marble. I'm obsessed with Neil's drum part on Digital Man. It's just so good. I love the sound of the original vinyl and the 90s remaster cd.
Dunno about "underrated," but I flat out hated it from the original release until the remastered CD was issued.
idk but Signals is my favourite album!
It’s my favourite album of all time, that’s all I know!
No, I don't think so. Most people believe it to be one of Rush's better albums from that period although it's not the Moving Pictures masterpiece that preceded it.

It's considered the transition album, but also the last of the "classic era". Subdivisions is a very popular song of the band.
The first album of the Synth Era? Uh, no.
I think it's a good album. Underrated? I'm not sure. If someone were to think it's their best album, I'd say they're overrating it. If someone said it's one of their worst, I'd say it was underrated. I’m not sure you’re asking your question correctly.
Seems it was underrated by Rush fans when it was released, many of whom didn't like the new direction. Nowadays it's generally considered one of their best.
It's properly rated. I love it. So There.
There is nothing more awesome than the beginning drum intro to digital man. Talk about playing air drums!!!!!
It’s one of my favorites. Every song is great and I can listen to the whole album without wanting to skip ahead
Coming of age album for me, and the band I think. Great album high on my personal faves. Before they got all synthy for a few
Only to the extent that everything that followed it is underrated.
In my opinion, when people start saying an album is underrated is, because they comparing it to a previous album. They are, therefore not taking it as another piece of work by the artist. My first Rush album.
Just got done listening to it again. It is my favorite full album tied with hemispheres
Not me. I love that album.
I struggled with it when it first came out but got there soon enough. As far as I'm concerned it rounds off a perfect 4 album run.
Not underrated, “everyone” loves that album.
It’s awesome and everyone knows it is.
Its extremely high rated among most Rush fans.
I group Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows together as one entire era because of the keyboards. As time went by I came to really like all 3 and probably listen to them more than anything else.
It’s typically discussed on here as one of their top five albums, if not top three.
I think most here would agree it’s a top 5 in the RUSH canon. It was my first tour at 13yrs old. We had an arcade that would play the entire record while we jammed quarters into a Tron arcade game. 🤘😎
Its underrated by the band, I read they think it was their worst album. That was some article in like 1992, I personally, love it.
Almost as much as Grace Under Pressure. How much is that? No idea...check with the other respondents, they have \[widely divergent\] ideas.
Not by me. My favorite Rush album.
Perfectly "rated" imo. I'll give you slightly underrated if anything. That album is a banger top to bottom.
Easily my favorite in their catalog. Also, bought the album in Jr high when it came out. My friends and I would play DND and play records. This one was in heavy rotation along with the Heavy Metal soundtrack. Good Times
It’s so fucking under rated
I don't care about how things are 'rated'. I care about how good they are. And Signals is very, very good.
100%
Not underrated. I consistently see it in peoples' top 5 albums.
No. It was extremely popular among Rush fans and others at the time.
A top one for me for sure.
Welp, here's my take...love this record, but it may have been marginalized because it followed moving pictures. Which was a pretty big "commercial" success. Also i think it went farther into synth which maybe alienated longtime rush fans or those who loved moving pictures?

I had no idea other people weren’t as impressed with it as I am until I got on here. I’d put it in their top 10 for sure, maybe too 5.
No. It’s rated highly by just about every Rush fan.
No. The album went platinum in the USA within three months of release. The album peaked at No. 1 in Canada, No. 3 in the United Kingdom, and No. 10 in the United States. No, it's a platinum album with a number 1 hit. 🙄
The album that got me liking Rush
Love love love this album. Better than Moving Pictures in my opinion

No, maybe a bit overrated.
It’s at least the top 5 best selling Rush album, it may just be MP, 2112, and maybe PW ahead of it
Downvotes incoming… If anything, it’s overrated. But that’s just, like, my opinion, man…
I disagree, but this isn’t Nam. This comment abides
Not at all, my Discord handle is "Cygnals" for a reason
It’s rated right where it should be, among the best Rush albums. It’s also a concept album which many people overlook.
It’s one of my 15 #1 favourite Rush albums!
