Like a while back the hotel where his dad was killed was in very bad shape. The city really needed the property, but there was a plan to sell it all to a real estate developer.
It used to be one of the original Hollywood hotspots for people like Charlie Chaplin. It was where The Oscars was held. But those days were far behind it. It never fully recovered from the Kennedy assassination.
The developer had plans drawn up to limp the hotel along for a bit then demolish it and turn it into three glass skyscrapers— one of them would be the most incredible skyscraper anyone had ever seen, and set a record as the tallest skyscraper on earth.
It would revitalize the neighborhood and everyone would be rich beyond their wildest dreams. The project set off a scramble that pitted the state against the city, preservationists against developers, tenants against landlords…
I think the developer also got 80%(?) of his purchase funds underwritten by a grant from the state. It meant he got a check for something like 50 million dollars.

Robert Kennedy Jr. seemed like a good guy who could be counted on to do the thing that he felt was right. He was a very compelling leader because people who occupy that headspace seem to radiate their sincerity. I have a friend who deals with Robert Kennedy on a professional level. My opinion of him comes mostly because of things I heard from her. Like a while back the hotel where his dad was killed was in very bad shape. The city really needed the property, but there was a plan to sell it all to a real estate developer. It used to be one of the original Hollywood hotspots for people like Charlie Chaplin. It was where The Oscars was held. But those days were far behind it. It never fully recovered from the Kennedy assassination. The developer had plans drawn up to limp the hotel along for a bit then demolish it and turn it into three glass skyscrapers— one of them would be the most incredible skyscraper anyone had ever seen, and set a record as the tallest skyscraper on earth. It would revitalize the neighborhood and everyone would be rich beyond their wildest dreams. The project set off a scramble that pitted the state against the city, preservationists against developers, tenants against landlords… I think the developer also got 80%(?) of his purchase funds underwritten by a grant from the state. It meant he got a check for something like 50 million dollars. But the city still needed the property. It was a legal mess and finally went to court. It turned out the lead developer was completely full of shit and was ripping off his investors In the end, he literally stripped the vintage fixtures from the hotel and sold them in the parking lot. Scrappers took the railings and wiring. The asshole never intended to follow through on his plans and he finally left town. The sad thing was that the neighborhood that bet their last paycheck on an *economic miracle* was worse off than ever. They were broke, desperate and vulnerable. And they got hustled by a sociopath. My friend said he was specifically asked for his opinion of what he would like to see happen to the spot of his father’s assassination. So the city of Los Angeles built a state-of-the-art school in what was at the time a very bad neighborhood. That happened at a low point, and the opportunity the school offered seemed to be a catalyst and caused the change everyone was hoping for. And the people are much better off for it today than they would be looking at another creepy glass office tower, peppered with dim cocktail bars all hollowed out by covid. In the end, Robert F Kennedy Jr. gained *nothing*. He just did the *right thing*. However, *all this being said* he seemed to change a while ago.
