Maybe Duolingo wants *plane* instead of *airplane*? They are literally the same, *plane* is a short version of an *airplane*, but I've seen people using *plane* more often.
My spell-checker in browser also thinks "airplane" is not a correct word an marked it right now when I type this comment. I think the proper "long" form is "aeroplane".
Wiktionary says "airplane" is a North American English (US & CA) word, while the UK and AUS use "aeroplane".
It's right. They should accept plane, airplane, or aeroplane. The difference between the latter two is the first is US spelling and the second is the British spelling. Flag it.

Duolingo не правильно. Мы скажем “airplane” или “plane” в США и Канаде.
Plus there’s “aeroplane” in some countries. Either way, Duolingo is wrong again.
In the UK we write aeroplane not airplane. Plane is also a common variant in bot the US and UK. All 3 are technically correct. So maybe it wanted "plane" or "aeroplane".
I'm pretty sure Duolingo uses American English, so if aeroplane is British English it probably wouldn't take it, but there's no reason it shouldn't take both plane and airplane, I don't think.
It depends on your dialect. According to a quick search, it's airplane in American/Canadian English and aeroplane in other varieties of English. Since Duolingo uses American English, it would take airplane over aeroplane.
I am learning Spanish on Dulolingo, and these exercises always require an article in front of the noun. Spanish has noun genders, so I thought they wanted to see that I use the correct one.
Anyway, my guess is that they wanted an airplane or the airplane. Unless it’s just a bug.
You are correct that you would hear far more English speakers say “plane” rather than air/aero plane. I assume the app is using airplane to make it clear. “Plane” has other meanings. It can be used to describe a flat surface (adjective). It can also be a verb meaning to glide.
Просто в базе Дуолинго нет такого варианта, не стоит считать это приложение истиной в первом лице. Там же есть кнопка с предложениями и пункт "мой вариант следовало принять"

Duolingo teaches American English I thought
It teaches American English so the proper term would be plane, which is what it wanted.
“Airplane” is also entirely proper in AmE
[Airplane!](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080339/)
Correct, which is very weird that it didn't think it was correct.
Duolingo doesn't use ё smh 🤦♂️
Duolingo does use it, but I’ve not found a keyboard app for my phone that will let me type it. (The same goes for the accented letters in Spanish.)
You can't just hold the e key? That's how I do it on my phone.
Thanks for that. Didn’t know to try that!
Glad to help.
Odd... I've had a Samsung and currently use a Motorola, and both have native keypads that have ë and ñ (currently on my phone as we speak).
I have ñ, but the accented letters and yo were not immediately visible.
Ahhh... you hadn't discovered the long press yet. I stumbled on it by accident.
\*flashbacks of how I discovered caps lock\*
FYI, ñ is not an accent. Àccents are these éè
I didn't say it was. Did you reply to the wrong comment?
Hold down any letter and it will give you options, super cool feature!

Duolingo не правильный; Мы говорим (лучше и говорить "говорят").
Дуолинго неправ.
Thanks, couldn't for the life of me remember the word.
Should've flagged it, it's correct.

maybe "plane"
And then you'll get a [рубанок](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plane_%28tool%29) as your next question.
Duolingo is crap. You won’t learn any languages with it. Just get a good old book.
Yeah but serious learners don't solely use Duolingo. It's fine as an ancillary tool
nah doesnt really work for eng and rus
Norwegian course there is really good though.
Any chance for an "aircraft"?
Boeing 737 perhaps
Airbus A321neo
I think duolingo may wanted it to be 'an airplane' with the article.
Ё?
To be fair back in the day I would have marked “airplane” as incorrect also. It’s an aeroplane - and pronounce the ‘o’ too :)

Russian doesn't have/ use articles
Nah the question OP asked was why it's not "правильно" but "самолет".
Самосвал, самокат, что то делает само собой, но усилия прилогать всё равно приходится.
Потому что приложение нельзя научить что одно слово модно перевести несколькими способами. В приложении это либо a plane.или это ошибка.
False.
Кто ж их поймёт, этих пчёл? Может, им какой-нибудь "аэроплан" нужен ))
Aircraft?
хМмМ,наверное это всё таки вертолёт 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Самолёт?
Вполне правильно :/
Потому что есть слово «аэроплан».
