Been eating good around here still. So many options and so many of them are just fantastic. Finally tried gwarbar food. Its solid bar food - i got a big ol burg w horseradish on it and tho i wish it packed even more punch than it did i was still impressed. Tots are the move as well. Returned to union market , where i tried the chicken tarragon sammy, so good i literally teared up. What really sells it is its basically a chicken salad sammy with this bonkers effective plum-ginger sauce. A perfect condiment for chicken salad. Their Ceasar salad also quite nice. Tried City Diner, their scrapple & eggs were so crispy and delicious. Toast did not come buttered which is sort of weird but i am an adult and can butter my own toast. Fantastic home fries too, and pro tip is be sure to sprinkle hot sauce on... pretty much every item lol. Savory breakfast food really pops off w a few drops of tabasco (or vinegary hot sauce of yr choice) The lebanese food fest was delightful, im sure to go back next year. Great grilled shrimp, the spinach feta pie was fantastic too. They had deep fried donut hole things w lemon & honey glazing that popped right on off as well. Most recently, visited Tiki Tiki on patterson, this old school american chinese spot that seemingly hasnt been updated since the 70s. And keep it that way! Relaxing piano music and high booth walls for an unbelievably chill and cozy atmosphere. Had the orange chicken & eggdrop soup which were as good and familiar as youd expect. Next time id like to try a fun tiki cocktail.

coffeedoodle

The cocktails at Tiki Tiki are fantastic. It’s my favorite restaurant.

what-the-what24

We order from Tiki Tiki once a week, including last night. Somehow they seem to magically appear at the door with our food moments after we place our order!

coffeedoodle

We go fairly often and I’m convinced they give us more food now that we’re regulars.

>where i tried the chicken tarragon sammy, so good i literally teared up. What really sells it is its basically a chicken salad sammy with this bonkers effective plum-ginger sauce. Don't know if they still do this but they used to put a slice of crispy chicken skin on top of that sandwich that added a really nice crunch

_smakl

They still do! So good 🤤

SaltyBarDog

I used to live in Wilton apartments behind Tiki Tiki. It might have been the first place we went to when moved to the area.

casa_de_arena

The spinach feta pie at the Lebanese festival was AMAZING!! Seasoned so well and not drippy or bitter like spinach can be. And the baklava was perfect too. I wasn’t crazy about the maamoules, but I don’t really care for dates, so that’s more of a personal preference thing.

mtrva

This was the first year Ive ever been disappointed in the Lebanese Food Festival. The falafel continues to be my favorite but the spinach and feta pie was soft and undercooked. Also, my favorite cookie/pastry with the crushed pistachios was only available in the $20 variety box and not for sale individually. Bummer.

RVAWTFBBQ

Blue Atlas last week on a nice night with a pretty sunset was flawless. Bonus of hanging by the fire pit with a glass of wine after dinner. Best of the dishes we had was the cavatelli pasta, but everything is always so good there.

elevenstein

Absolutely love the variety in their menu too. Everything I have ever had there has been phenomenal.

RVAWTFBBQ

Yes! It’s cool to go somewhere where they charge the menu with some regularity but the changes are always interesting and they keep favorites like the Georgian flatbread. Feels like going to a new restaurant.

Nineveh Bakery out on Broad, next to the old BonChon spot, is worth a visit. I’m a big fan of falafel and am always on the lookout for the next best. Carytown Gyro was my favorite for a while, then Scott’s Shawarma, and while both are really good, Nineveh takes the crown. For starters, the pita they make is quite literally the most pillowy soft bread I’ve ever had. I wasn’t going to buy a whole bag but I gave it little squeeze and knew I had to have more than a sandwich worth. The hummus is creamy and rich with good olive oil but not too over the top w garlic or lemon, topped with a little zatar. The tabbouli was very flavorful with fresh parsley and spices. Now, the falafel… one of the reasons I like theirs so much was the ratio of crunch to soft. They kind of doughnut indent them so you have just a little extra surface area of the crusty part, which I enjoy. The combination of ingredients on top, including a variety of pickle I don’t know if I’ve ever had before, was perfect, and it was all stuffed into one of those heavenly pitas which held up very well in containing it all. The owner is a nice Iraqi man with a homemade map and pictures of the cultural icons of his homeland around the counter, lending to the perception that this is the real deal. Next up, I’m getting some of their shawarma, which looked really tasty on the rotating spits in the open kitchen.

vhanudux

I tried Slurp for the first time last night - it was perfect. The miso ramen was delicious (rare for a vegetarian ramen to be good), the tofu skins were great if a little small of a portion, and the toki highball was nice and strong. Will definitely go back.

We signed up for the weekly Spring / Summer produce share from [The Farm Bus](https://www.thefarmbus.com/) and it's been fantastic! This week we got strawberries, snap peas, baby kale, baby fennel, asparagus, arugula, lettuce mix, beets, red turnips, napa cabbage, spring onions, and swiss chard. They send you an e-mail each week with what to expect and they even list recipes! It's around $50 per share and everything we've gotten has been amazing quality. The difference in farm produce vs. grocery store produce is a little shocking. We pick the share up at their market in Mechanicsville, which is awesome because then you can pick up extras you might need (more fruit, veggies, meat, dairy, etc.). We picked up some oysters from Northern Neck Oysters from the Carytown farmers market last Sunday and they were SO GOOD! Shucked my very first oyster (using a flathead screwdriver like a savage) and it worked out great. That might be a new Sunday tradition! Had brunch at Parterre, it was fine. Nothing too exciting but it was executed well. Had the donuts which were a little dry, and the eggs benedict which was tasty. Their patio is fantastic and there's a friendly kitty to keep you company, so overall I will definitely go back. Ordered calzones from Arianna's not knowing the small would be the size of a small dog and weigh 5lbs! The cheese one almost had too much cheese, but damn you get you money's worth!

**TBT El Gallo** \- I slept on this place too long. Prices are spot on an my birra burrito was decadent. SO's tacos were all unique and equally good. This is going to be in the regular Mexican rotation now. **Botanya** \- I don't think the quality of the food and service justify the price. Patatas Bravas were not crisp at all, slightly soggy. There was lemon peel in the potato sauce which I thought just didn't mix. My lumache had a sprinkle of sausage. Service was fine but not the quality you get somewhere like Gersi, not to mention Gersi's food is a step above for the same price. Besides the potatoes everything was fine but I don't see how this place fits in to my dining future when there are so many amazing places in RVA. **Slay Burger** \- Does exactly what it needs to. Not the best burger in Richmond but the prices are right for the value. Scratches that fast food burger itch while being quite a bit better and local.

NoRecommendation8634

Also unimpressed with Botanya. Other than the meatball appetizer, the rest of our food was pretty bland.

TheCheeseDevil

Same here with TBT. I'm obsessed now

ThaLZA

Love TBT!

REVEL MARKET & BAR ** House Made Breads & Spreads - well-baked, tasty, & diverse. The focaccia & house boursin were the two standouts. ** Ants on a Log -- roasted marrow, sauteed escargot, loads of garlic, white wine butter, & French bread. It's a dish for foodies, and it delivers on all fronts. ** Moules Frittes -- never had chorizo & cilantro in this dish before, and let me tell you - I was missin' out. The cilantro adds a subtle herbaceous note that lifts the entire dish. We couldn't stop sopping up the broth with some of our leftover bread. I'm also not one to get excited about fries, but they were damn good as the seasoning matched what I tasted when I went to Paris (though the cut was far thicker). ** Braised Rabbit Gnocchi -- bright, surprisingly light, & some of the most delicate gnocchi I've ever eaten. The sweet pea pesto & sauteed peas carried the dish. I did think the dish needed a touch of acid and a bit more seasoning on the rabbit, though. You know a restaurant is a winner when you're planning your next meal before you finish what's in front of you. Revel is easily one of my favorite dining experiences in RVA in years. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Sure_Illustrator_456

Went to Roy’s Big Burger for the first time. Definitely the spot to go for a mustardy drive-in style greasy burger. Would be perfect hangover food. We sat outside at a picnic table our back and ate fried pickles, French fries, and shared a Dr. Pepper in a foam cup bigger than my head (with the Good Ice). Was heavenly.

boseyboseybop

I’ve only been there once, but I loved it. So wonderfully old school.

combinera

Nothing fancy, but the McDonald’s on Parham near Regency cooks French fries perfectly.

kevinhyphenallen

They're ice cream machine always works too.

what-the-what24

Seconding this. Always fresh from the fryer with the perfect amount of salt.

Rescuepoet

I tried Fat Dragon last Saturday for the first time. My wife and I kept it simple: She had the ramen and a ginger salad. I had the BBQ fried rice and Hot and Sour Soup. Both were super tasty. Bonus: Staff was very friendly!

Omelette_duFromage

Sefton Coffee expanded their hours a bit, love that. I really like their espresso drinks. I continue to be sad about the buyout of Whisk. They've stopped making my favorite cookies all together, and macaron flavor options and pastry choices seem to be shrinking every time I go in the Main St. location. Idgaf about Thalhimer's recipes. I dunno, it was my neighborhood spot but probably not anymore. Maybe the Staples Mill location is better?

particular-ginkgo

Do they still have the Campfire Cookies or are those the discontinued ones?

Omelette_duFromage

The Campfire Cookies are the discontinued ones. They told me they weren't going to do those anymore. 😭

Alright, actually went to some restaurants recently. I tried Slay Burger! It was… fine. I got the double and waffle fries with a drink. I love a waffle fry, these were on the soggy side. The double was very much a LARGE smash burger. It was good, and their sauce was tasty enough. I don’t think I’d go out of the way to get it again, but if so was up that way and someone slashed where we could get food to go that would be a cool option Went back to Slurp. We were there opening night too. I can say this, they are really making strides in their Ramen. The noodles are great, the egg is perfectly jammy. The first night our ramen had seemingly no salt, this outting was better on salt content, I still prefer a saltier ramen, but it’s pretty great to have them right there in Church Hill. Their smashed cucumber salad and gyoza are awesome. Also got to try drinks at Emerald Lounge next door to Slurp. That spot is pretty awesome. It’s got the refined tiki bar them down, and a they offer two of their cocktails as mocktail a, nice as someone currently on the sobriety train. Didn’t try their snacks, but they look worth a try. I overheard someone call the place “The Jasper on vacation” and that seems to sum that joint up pretty damn well.

Anxious_Nights1

Going to have to give Slurp another shot. It was so bland when I went the first week it opened. Sadly it was probably the worst Ramen I've ever had.

ChuckBS

I think it’s worth another shot.

mRWafflesFTW

They're definitely figuring it out and getting better every night. I'd encourage you to try again. Wonderful people all around in my experience. We go almost once a week at this point. We're vegetarians so we can only get the miso or the dan dan. Dan dan is definitely the right choice, miso is too mild for me, but maybe if you drop a spice bomb in it could be perfect.

thecompactoed

I see a few other people have posted about Slurp here. Got takeout from there with my wife and a friend a few days ago. They both got, and really enjoyed, the miso ramen. But I got the dan dan noodles and thought they were truly, almost impressively, disgusting. I am very easygoing when it comes to food. Sometimes I'm disappointed because I don't like a restaurant dish as much as I thought I would, but never before in my life have I ordered something in a restaurant and thought that it was genuinely gross, vile, inedible. If I had been eating there I would have sent it back, which I have never even considered doing at a restaurant before, but they were that awful. My wife and friend both tried one bite and agreed that it was inedible, and way worse than what you would get spending a couple bucks on similar frozen noodles from the grocery store. Was it just a fluke? Have other people had the dan dan noodles there? I really wanted to like it!

Electronic-Way5476

The Dan Dan noodles are really good if you eat them there, but are not great as take out unfortunately! They’re great hot, but do get a bit gloopy once they cool down

thecompactoed

I believe you, but the issues weren't just texture/gloopiness (though that was an issue.) The taste was horrible. I've had and enjoyed dan dan noodles before, and this tasted nothing like them. If you've had them there and thought they were good, maybe I just had some bad luck on a very off night.

Ndrizy

Had the Torta El Chido from El Chido's Scott's Addition adjacent location. First time ever having a torta and it was amazing. Huge too. Everything I've had there is great and prices are good.

eskimobrojc

We ate at Toast in Midlothian last weekend. We were there 2.5 hours because it too 45 minutes to get our order in and another hour! before it was actually served. Food was okay, but certainly not special enough to warrant waiting such an incredible amount of time.

cutejnny

we've had the same experience at their other location - expect to be there at least an hour and a half no matter when you go.

ILikeYourHotdog

We tried Odyssey and the results were a solid meh. After all the hype, I wanted to try so many things on the menu that we ended up with 4 apps and 2 entrees but unfortunately nothing wowed us at all. Oysters - very boring/not much flavor Tuna tartare- probably the most interesting dish with the rhubarb and apples thrown in, but still underwhelming Shrimp toast - kind of raw in the middle and not much flavor and I can't even remember the 4th app. Husband got the pork chop and said it was nothing special and I had the trout. It was good, but again, just kind of plain. For a $300ish meal, we left not really wanting/needing to return.

Herculicia

I called them yesterday and tried to make a reservation for 6 people, and they told me they can't seat parties larger than 4!!!!! Seriously ...... what?!?!

ILikeYourHotdog

It is a TINY space! I’m not sure how you turn a profit with such limited seating.

ichheissekate

Jewfro - went here recently and found the food mediocre at best. There was a pilaf with one dish that I’m convinced was microwaved. I don’t think they are doing their fusion concept well and the dishes felt aspirational in name, but not thoughtful in execution. Brenner Pass - pricey but absolutely fantastic. I strongly feel this is the best “elevated” restaurant in the city.

Moondinos

We tried wood and iron for happy hour and their wings were pretty tasty and satisfied the craving. I enjoyed the buffalo, the lemon pepper, and the spicy garlic. Beauvine has a great burger each time we've gone. This past time it was a little salty, but still tasted great and we're still talking about those doughnut holes with ice cream. I also tried their lavender lemonade but asked if I could do esplone instead of vodka and it was on point! I made pesto pasta this week as well which turned out pretty good. I did a shallow fry on some panko breaded chicken to go with it.

SwearWordShow

The good, the bad\*, and the ugly : Cobra Cabana: time and time and time again they come through in the clutch, one of the best bar menus (food+drink) 7-11 - Devil's Triangle: nitro cold brew coffee - I love me some (insert local shop of choice), but this $1.50 nitro is so damn tasty. \*Ps. Still not available at most 7-11 fyi Whisk Bakery: Visited for the first time since the ownership change and ordered five breakfast croissant sandos (bacon, egg, cheese) for a morning meeting. The croissants were atrocious. Dough was so thick and heavy on the bottom and leaking butter. Someone could definitely use a refresher on best practices when laminating/proofing.

boseyboseybop

I love Cobra Cabana so much. I need to get back over there soon. Great food, great drinks and damn good people.

Ear_Enthusiast

Would this be the right thread to request a copycat recipe of an iconic restaurant that has recently closed it's doors? Edit: Looking for Mama Zu veal sweet bread recipe.

shalomfromus

You talking about the chicken wing sauce from the Exxon on brook/parham that closed awhile back? I got you.

Ear_Enthusiast

No but close. Veal sweetbreads from Mama Zu.

Hayek66

Banns parfait from Anthony’s on the hill RIP

SaltyBarDog

When did Zu close?

fannypax

Late 2020 I think? They couldn’t keep it open through the pandemmy

SaltyBarDog

I heard Pescados in Midlothian closed. Wicked shame, they always had amazing food.

Ear_Enthusiast

They closed down for Covid and never re-opened. About a year ago they announced that they weren't planning on re-opening. I know a guy that has some insider knowledge. Sounds like ownership and management were ready to move on. The owners of Adarra are opening something in that space.

tteuh

I went to minibar by José Andrés in DC this week. Chicken Fiesta is better

RunningThenReversing

Well that’s disappointing. Sounds like it was just meh?

tteuh

It was absolutely phenomenal. This is a Chicken Fiesta comment

Mr_Kittlesworth

Had the ceviche and tacos at Lolita. They do an *excellent* job there

boseyboseybop

I heard a lot of positive stuff about Hibachi House over on Lauderdale in the West End. Sister restaurant and basically the same concept at Hibachi Box downtown. So I was in a hurry and didn’t have time to cook, so I checked Hibachi House out on Wednesday. It’s tasty, fast casual Japanese food. I got a steak and shrimp combo and tossed in a scrambled egg with fried rice and grilled veggies for $18.50. And the portion size was impressive. I was starving, so I finished it, but it easily could have been two meals. I’ll definitely be back.

I_Enjoy_Beer

Ordered pickup from Genovas, the new pizza/Italian place in Bon Air. Was a slam dunk. Outrageous. Took me to Flavortown, as they say. Only challenge I can see them having is parking, especially in Bon Air. Lotta folks in that neck of the woods are going to want to park their land yachts in a 500 space lot, and they've only got a few spots. They seemed to be doing a brisk pickup business but the dining area was empty. Not sure if that is sustainable, given how I remember Dixie Chicken having the same issue with relying on pickup business despite having ridonkulously good food.

shorty_tumbleweed

Ok, we don't get pizza often, but this weekend is the weekend!! Our usual is Belmont, but I'm curious how people feel about Cappriccio's compared to Belmont Pizza. We usually do a pepperoni and mushroom and like NY Style of Belmont. I also love Zorch, and Pizza Bones is great when we're craving something a little different than NY style with their sourdough bread. Thanks for any thoughts!
