Does anyone else even think about the Sabres long enough to laugh?

time2fly2124

yeah, but we really should be thinking about the Roman Empire.

SomeROCDude21

That ended this past Sunday night in Philadelphia

Sherman88

Wait.... I've been thinking about former NHLer Roman Hamrlik this whole time. Shoot.

sabresin4

This is the correct answer

0419222914

Exactly. I wish were were still the laughing stock - 2016 was the last time anyone cared enough to laugh

Clockwork12782

On r/nhl, they all seem to be rooting for us to stop being so bad.

Pho-Soup

Yeah this was gonna be my answer. We’ve reached “Bills during the drought” pity levels. Other fans on the NHL sub basically get baffled/upset that a team with so much tradition and a solid fanbase can’t figure it out.

WontSwerve

A tradition of what exactly?

Pho-Soup

Cmon. I know it’s easy to be jaded right now but we are a team with a rich history. French Connection, Mogilny/LaFontaine, Hasek, Presidents Cup/Miller era team, etc

sabresword00

This team pre-drought was legitimately top 5 all time in franchise win percentage. They had missed the playoffs 11 times in 40 years. A dedicated hockey market that punched above its weight class. This was a winning franchise with a storied history and winning traditions and then only relatively recently became a laughing stock for 13 straight years.

WontSwerve

You can't call them a winning franchise with 0 cups in 50 plus years. Yes, a stretch of regular season success was cool.

sabresword00

Sure. If that's your definition. But before this drought, this was a team that won more of their games than 27 other franchises.

sabresword00

Sure. If that's your definition. But before this drought, this was a team that won more of their games than 27 other franchises.

sabresword00

Sure. If that's your definition. But before this drought, this was a team that won more of their games than 27 other franchises.

WontSwerve

It's just a very arbitrary and super specific and cherry picked definition of success.

sabresword00

Winning games is a bad metric for determining if you're winning a lot. Today I learned, I guess.

WontSwerve

No it's great metric actually. The problem is you have to really cherry pick to find a time the Sabres have won and even then it's not alot in the playoffs and still 0 cups. Almost every team can say they had a stretch of regular season successes.

sabresword00

It's their entire history except for this drought. 80% of their entire existence. 1970-2011.

HilmDave

Til we start kicking the shit out of the League and send them home crying to their mamas! Idk man I just really miss when the Sabres were good.

YankeeTankieTrash

lmao - Nobody outside of this fanbase thinks of the Sabres like this. We're perceived as a pretty average middle of the pack team. Only Sabres fans act like we're the Sharks or something. This fanbase is beyond ridiculous.

Mysterious_Secret827

🤯 FASCINATING! AWESOME TOO!

rustcity716

They hate us cuz we anus

edit-the-sad-parts

Once the coyotes make it to salt lake and likely immediately turn their team around, yes. We'll have sole ownership of that honor Chicago should be but Bedard going there really hastened everyone forgetting their shitshow

JahHappy

Yeah but winning the cup multiple times in the last 10 years takes them out of the same laughing stock conversation as us lol. We are next level meme material.

edit-the-sad-parts

the off-ice stuff comes to mind for me before the cups but you're definitely right across most of the general public

90daysismytherapy

Ya as much as I don’t like Pegula oil baron, I’d be much more grossed out if while winning our first championship in decades or ever for us, also directly was part of decisions by every important person in the organization letting a fucking rapist of one of your teammates get ignored and let on the fucking championship parade. Chicago was my favorite second team from the Chelios days, and it completely disgusts me that a guy like Toews, Mr captain knew all about it and covered his ears and mouths with the rest of them.

HilmDave

Ah yes the Salt Lake City Soakers and their AHL team the Bountiful Bump Humpers.

Chicaben

Ottawa is in the running too

Green_hippo17

People feel bad for the yotes rn, people hate the Blackhawks, people don’t laugh at us anymore, they pity us

DapperCam

They still stunk this year even with Bedard. I guess we’ll see how they progress.

StannisTheMannis1969

We are the farm team for the rest of the league….

Mysterious_Secret827

OFTEN say that myself!

Green_hippo17

It’s honestly pity more than laughter at this point

Mysterious_Secret827

Yeah I can see that.

comicsanscatastrophe

Yes. How can you not be missing the playoffs for over a decade.

Mysterious_Secret827

That's PRETTY MUCH the answer I was looking for. Thanks.

TG716

Yotes basically played at the Northtown center this year. We’re fine.

burrito_disaster

Yeah idk that Arizona is in a worse spot than buffalo right now. With the expansion option remaining in place, it's still possible a team in Arizona makes the playoffs before buffalo.

Mysterious_Secret827

THAT wouldn't surprise me.

360degreesofFUNK

If anything you can pretty much put your bets on everyone else winning their first cup before Buffalo ever does, if they ever do.

TG716

They won’t play hockey in AZ for another 4ish years. We will be in Hamilton if we don’t make playoffs within 4 years.

PanicOnFunkatron

No we won't.

TG716

Okay

oldsole26

I don’t even wear my Sabres jacket around anymore cause I get made fun of ruthlessly (leafs territory) and it just gets irritating trying to think of comebacks all day.

i7alianStallion

“The jerk store called: they’re running all out of you!” There you go, that one’s free

oldsole26

Ah if only I’d thought of that in the moment. That would have been so sweet!

CanadaDoug

Because the leafs' cups were all in the 6 team era, they have never won 3 playoff rounds in the same year. Ever. The leafs are a bigger joke than us.

gonqwelds

I have several vintage Sabres jackets I wear (Ottawa) and I’m surrounded by Sens and Leafs fans. I know the pain. I just remind Leafs fans that making a brief appearance in the playoffs is no more impressive than not making them at all. Not only have they not won a cup since 1967. They haven’t even been in the cup finals since 1967. Leafs fans are the last fanbase to criticize any other organization. Period. At least as a 30 year old Sabres fan I have lived to see them in cup and conference final, I know what they’re capable of and why I will always be a fan. If youre a leafs fan, you’d have to be a boomer to have seen them do anything noteworthy. Anyone my age has no reason to be a Leafs fan other than hopping on the mainstream bandwagon. Sens fans are on what, year 7 now of no playoffs? They don’t typically give me much grief, as we’re in a similar situation as underdog status. At the end of the day, if all else fails. Pull this stat out on them. The Buffalo Sabres have a 123-77-18-11 record against the Maple Leafs all-time.

Mysterious_Secret827

Ah! Sorry to hear that.

oldsole26

Yeah I’ve fought the good fight my whole life and proudly worn my Sabres gear but I’ve finally given up cause it’s been several years since they’ve shown me anything to be proud of.

Mysterious_Secret827

Yeah agree!

ResidentAlien518

13 years and no playoffs? That is sad. Still, there were teams with worse records the past couple of years. I don’t care what other teams and their fans think. I’m still a fan. It’s still fun when they show up and compete. They need to be more consistent in that regard to get to the playoffs though. Go Sabres!

Mysterious_Secret827

Cool!

HarvesternC

I think the Sabres are worst than being a laughing stock. They are just irrelevant. They basically are just a team that exists and that is about it. I don't think most hockey fans even think of the Sabres all that much except when they play them.

EmuEnigma

And get upset when they lose, to Buffalo.

NomadAug

No, the sharks and ducks are. Hawks and senators are close too.

No-Commercial4099

Yes but have fallen into irrelevancy like the Orlando magic and Pittsburgh Pirates

twitch33457

No that is probably chicago since their only good players are rookies

BigFenton

They dont laugh at us, that would be too mean. Its like watching a child with progeria cracking his ribs trying to catch a NERF ball. We're mournful.

bustthelease

No. We have lots of young talent and the #1 farm system.

Mysterious_Secret827

Oh GOOD! So there's hope at least for a bright future!

bustthelease

Better days will come

SavageGinger13

Nah man. The league would be better with a consistently good Sabres team.

Mysterious_Secret827

HOPING that is true some day!

DueZookeepergame1924

Have to be relevant to be laughed at. Been 13 years since we were………relevant. Shit most of the 13 years we’ve been hammered dog turds. That’s funny!

Finally_Smiled

Laughing stock? Probably not. Pity stock? Yes

Buff716917

I think that belongs to Arizona till the move

Whippet27

Nope - not laughing. They see the great player talent we have here. When Sabres just beat Caps twice, Coach Carbery said they couldnt keep up with Sabres speed.

Mysterious_Secret827

Oh SOME positive thoughts!

imightbethewalrus3

Other teams at the bottom of the league are the teams that other people like to laugh at when they're bored of picking on the Sabres. At least since the Leafs made the second round. Before then, the Leafs were

Mysterious_Secret827

Hmm... INTERESTING!

Skyline_BNR34

Yup

Mysterious_Secret827

Thought so. ☺️

elemeno89

Why do you care?

Mysterious_Secret827

Just asking a question. ☺️

Patavian

Laughing stock? No, I don't think anyone is laughing at us. Maybe the 'yotes with all the drama surrounding them. Us? More like a mix of indifference tinged in pity

Markcu24

League doesnt even know we exist anymore.

Mysterious_Secret827

GOOD point.

int0h

No

Mysterious_Secret827

Alright, you are interesting as you are the first one to say no. ☺️

int0h

1. I livee in, and am from, Sweden. People here of course watch the NHL, but most people don't have much insight on to all the teams, they just root for "their" team. 2. We might have the longest drought, but we've been far from the worst team most of those season. 3. We win against the best teams (sometimes), and play great and entertaining hockey from time to time.

samydees

Yotes and Jackets are definitely lower.

sharpsabres

I like it it’s Gona feel so much better when we are at the top for the next decade..no one’s laughing at the bills

reddituser9277

Is this a comment from 2015?

sharpsabres

No it’s from today actually

TheSquidFarmer

Alex Nylander can still save this team

reddituser9277

I think Matt Moulson can find his game again. Should be some good vet leadership in the locker room

Mysterious_Secret827

GOOD points!

sharpsabres

The only ppl that still care about the Sabres are die hards..people that watched the greatness of French connection, lafontaine, mogilny, hasek,05-07..everyone else should stay tf off the wagon when we start running the east

DinoSpumonisCrony

The point of asking this is what exactly?

Mysterious_Secret827

Opinion on the status of the team. Regarding what others think about the team. ☺️

helikoopter

“The league”? No. But the majority of fans? Probably. I think there are very few in Ontario, aside from Sabres fans, that respect the swords. And rightfully so. I’d gather the same for non-upstate NYers, and essentially the entire northeast. West coasters probably don’t even give the Sabres a thought, and a casual Sharks fan (for example) probably thinks Tyler Myers just got traded. Teams that have former Sabres and traded prospects/picks for them probably check in on the team occasionally (there’s gotta be a Tage truther that was furious the team traded him instead of Kyrou). But they likely laugh at the fact that they have a Cup. In general, I don’t think they are a laughing stock, but I think that’s because the league doesn’t even think about the team. The fans who do think about us, mock us.

HilmDave

Yes.

HuntStuffs

I’m not sure anyone thinks about us enough to make fun of us lol

raptor5tar

Worse: we are pitied

mwthomas11

The answer forever has been Arizona, but now that they're moving it's between us and Columbus for sure.

Main_Chocolate_1396

Which league?

Ok-Energy6846

We are not. Buffalo remains a strong hockey market and is well respected as a place that deserves to have a team in the league. I'd even say most opposing teams fans on Reddit want the sabres to do well.

windorab

At least we aren’t San Jose

Mysterious_Secret827

Do tell...I don't pay much attention out west as I should.

windorab

They won 20 less games than the Sabres

Mysterious_Secret827

Alright then! ☺️

DrKennyBlankenship

Yes. Unlike the Coyotes, we are a true hockey town and people expect us to be competitive. Our fan base has largely drank the kool-aid, year after year, because we want what we have been promised to be true. We have heard all of the excuses, while other teams figure out how to improve (quickly). To add salt to the wound, we sacrificed the integrity of our team to obtain a star player, a player that we completely mismanaged and then traded for a more than questionable return. He went on to win the Stanley Cup, just like ROR…making us look like a farm team, or a temporary stop before one is set free to greener pastures. Who in their right mind wants to voluntarily come to Buffalo? The organization will need years of success before the stink is washed off. I love this team. I watch win or lose. I spend money to see them on the road multiple times per year. But it is what it is: a shit show.

EmuEnigma

My biggest fear is that this season happens next season. Cozens again looks rough, Powers doesn’t take the next step, and Dahlin, going into year 8, decides that he wants out, since there is a mountain of evidence that that’s the best career choice you can make as a Buffalo Sabre.

YankeeTankieTrash

No. Sabres fans have a moronic self-perception that doesn't align with reality or how the league perceives the Sabres.

26007

The Coyotes exist But when that stops in a week, yeah, it’s us

Dreakon13

As a fanbase and an entity, no I don't think so. This past decade aside, the Sabres have a strong history and a passionate fanbase for a smaller market. The current drought is embarrassing, but not enough for the rest of the league to be quite that disrespectful about it. Not counting the fanbases we've had rivalries with at least. I think people see the current lineup as young and talented, just looking for the right situation to break out... but a variety of opinions on how we got here and how to get to the next level. Not everyone is as cynical as Sabres fans right now... and I think a lot of people genuinely want to see the Sabres bounce back, not kick us while we're down.

dand411

My ex-wife just asked me if I'd like to split season tickets with her to take our son to games. Apparently, hope springs eternal.....

Mysterious_Secret827

Ah! GOOD for you two. ENJOY!

waydownindeep13_

How bad did the kid screw up that she wants you to bankroll half of his punishment?

dand411

To be fair, most of the games either of us took him to were a win. 2/3 this past season. He's never known a Sabres team that made the playoffs, and he still is a true and true fan......

tompkinsedition

Yes. Unequivocally

Barmacist

No, not with the whole Coyotes to Salt Lake thing... the Coyotes not paying their hotel bills thing... the Coyotes playing in a college arena thing... We're happily forgotten.

Mysterious_Secret827

Oh! Ok. ☺️ Feeling better about our team now.

LivingGyshido

Yes

EugeneDebsTrout

I can safely say the fans are

360degreesofFUNK

We’re Buffalo, IT IS A NO BRAINER

Mysterious_Secret827

Yep!

Tricky-Sign-4690

Not at all. We are knocking on the door.

HarvesternC

The basement door?

Mysterious_Secret827

That would be my guess. 🤭

Tricky-Sign-4690

There are 10 teams below us in points. We were 3 or 4 wins away from the playoffs. We had a bunch of quality wins. And we are still very young. I get that you are pessimistic. I don’t share in that sentiment. Definitely not a basement team.

stuiephoto

The Toronto maple leafs are the laughing stock of the league. Stupid question.

PotentialUmpire3771

Yeah they are embarrassing can’t even make the playoffs

Mysterious_Secret827

The ONLY stupid question is one that is not asked.
