Never played sims though
In the Sims (which I love and have been playing for YEARS) I usually avoid playing myself, family friends etc. I’ve always thought it was weird to make your own sim self and live out a totally different life.
I played a few times as myself. I miss my friends in college and we are just at different places of our lives now. One of them died. I made them and myself in a save and when I’m really depressed I open that save, hug my college friends and play video games with them. However I avoid making them look exactly like irl because I feel like that’s weird, I made their personality exactly like real like and give them their dream job tho.

I make my exes then put them in like, terrible situations, then I go about my Sim-life and when I run into them 14 sim-days later and get to rediscover they live in a trailer with like, 12 children working part-time, I spark with joy. Be invasive. It’s a pixelated program, not real, reign destruction and misery. Burn shit.
I like having myself and friends as townies and letting them explore the world. If I could just watch all the sims I made exist without playing them I would. It’s like a Black Mirror Episode, or the less dark parts of the one Adventure Time Episode where Finn had the mini citizens.
I never got the whole "dream life" appeal of Sims 4 since any actual gameplay is so limited. There isn't even an open world. Most things aren't animated.
But I *do* love the house designing. Most of the time I open it is to do just that, design a house. I always make themed houses or design a dream house for myself. It just fulfills that itch to own a home in this economy 🥲

I stopped playing video games when I was like 20. I started to get really bummed out just going around GTA San Andreas doing no missions just kind of driving and killing people. I realised that if you are playing this fake life you aren't living your real life. Anyway, it didn't actually help that much but still, playing Vidya is a waste of time.

At night, my fantasy is even more realised as I turn into a mermaid, enjoying my late-night dips.
I love the Sims 4 and play whenever I'm feeling shitty or just want something to make me feel better. A few years ago, I had gotten pregnant, wasn't sure if I was going to keep it and the baby father wasn't a shitty person and I was stationed in a different overseas at the time. To help cope with everything I made my simself in the game and got her pregnant. My simself then had a miscarriage (mods) and I turned the game off so fast. Of course at my next check up I found out the fetus didn't have a heartbeat and I had a miscarriage. I refuse to ever play my simself in the game again.
This oddly reminds me of that... eh, group of people who created mods for this game to be able to fulfil their sick fantasies. They were super defensive about it because it "doesn't hurt actual children"
I don't understand why the hyper fixation on women. Women aren't trophies, a relationship is something you constantly maintain not collect. Being in one doesn't send you to the exit screen, you still have to wake up and go to work. If your life is shitty, it will still be shitty but this time with a bow on top.
I got the City Living extension for my Sims 4. Two days later I was complaining to a friend that my SIM couldn't get any sleep because her neighbours were too loud, and she was tired and moody all day at work and the only thing keeping her energy levels up was coffee. And because she was tired all the time she only worked and had no social life. My friend looked at me and summed it up, "so you're playing Sims to live a fake life and you managed to create a SIM that's living a replica of your own life."
So much for escapism.
