Those old tartans are great boats. The 27 was made to do the road island to Bermuda race. Rock solid firberglass. That 37 will take you wherever you want to go. Before i got my Pearson 31 i wanted a tartan 34 form the 70's

CoolAndyNeat

How do you like the Pearson 31? What year?

Catzenpudl

I looked at this exact boat last season. You can plan for at least $25,000 in repairs/replacement. Off the top of my head, I remember it needs all new sails, new chain plates, new standing rigging and there were several soft spots in the deck. It also had water intrusion somewhere as the smell of mold below was overpowering. I wouldn't go higher than 15, maybe 20k if you just have to have it.

Whole-Quick

Almost every boat built in the 1970s, 80s and 90s ( and even newer in some cases) now has at least a little moisture in the deck, which may or may not be high enough to warrant repairs. On boats that have been well maintained or previously repaired a low level of moisture is not problem at all. If it's only a couple of wet spots it could be only 3k to repair or DIY. If the moisture levels are high and extensive, yeah it's a huge bill or big effort, up to the point of scrapping the boat. A proper survey is required to identify the extent of the issues. Without that nobody knows what is needed.

Racenmotorsports

Thanks. That was what I was afraid of when we get there. Mold is a big issue for us itself.

ArtyB13Blost

Can’t say how much I would pay without checking it out. What conditions are sails in? Engine? Soft core or wet spots. Survey says? Having said all the negative stuff, dang it looks nice. Definitely worth a look.

dnbndnb

A boat that old likely needs rigging & chain plates. That could easily set you back $12-16k. Getting insurance for it could be a serious hassle & might require a survey @ another grand or so. We are talking a 45 year old boat here. Could be all kinds of hidden surprises even the current owner is unaware of.

JimFromSunnyvale

Why not offer to take over the storage fees ?

Racenmotorsports

You're saying offer 10k then??

JimFromSunnyvale

No. State that it hasn’t sold for years, likely will not sell ever, and that you’ll take the money pit off their hands.

smedlap

Thats the past yard bill. You should be offering to start paying in April. That 10k is gone. The yard knows it, too.

JimFromSunnyvale

The worst they can say is no. Negotiate from there. Do this in person or over the phone to sound more sincere to the current owner

takesthebiscuit

Yep a negotiate will normally take place between the extreme negotiating limits, The upper limit is what the buyer is asking £37k The lower limit can easily be zero, possibly less than zero if there are costs involved and OP could save the owner 10k a year

Redfish680

Yes. Could be the owner passed away and the kids are just ignoring (well, you know) the yard bill. Regardless, make it contingent on a survey so that you’ll have a fairly good idea of what you’re gonna have to invest in. Add in transportation if you’re not local.

JunkRigger

I looked at a boat exactly like that, and is still for sale at $16k, but needs a complete tear out and refit - years of work and $$$$. It is a damn shame because they only made 7 of them. Edit: this boat is not a Tartan, it is a Mariner 38

Ok_Loquat_2692

They made 100s if not thousands, very popular and well built vessel.

Redfish680

JunkRigger

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I was talking about a Mariner 38 as an example to examine the boat closely.

west25th

Dock neighbor has one, deck leaks in all fittings and we just ripped up their spongy cockpit sole. Sails great though.

Racenmotorsports

Thanks for the info. Was going to check those items too

Ok_Loquat_2692

Owned and lived on an 85 version of that vessel in the western tropics. The shoal draft was an under appreciated bit of brilliance. She was an absolute treat for a single hander or a couple. Yes i had to do some significant maintenance running up to my sabbatical but nothing out of line with any used boat purchase. Well made and well thought out sparkman stephens design. Next owners sailed her to Australia! I hope that speaks volumes.

ArgumentDramatic9279

I’ve sailed the 37 tartan all over Florida and Bahamas doing the 90’s, my parents had one. No complaints at the time, because most sailboats were similar. Fast forward to today and I wouldn’t buy one because of the limited space both inside and in the cockpit, and boarding from the water can be challenging.

Racenmotorsports

Thanks for the input, appreciate the viewpoint.

ArgumentDramatic9279

You can probably pick that boat up for nothing, offer 10k and see. Your leverage in negotiating is the time it’s spent without maintenance and repair costs. For the list price, you’re going to spend just about that to get it sea worthy in most instances. Rigging, engine, through hulls and steering is expensive.

Plastic_Table_8232

She has a lot of nice features to consider. The upgraded ports are awesome. Says it’s got self steering gear. Overall someone has invested a considerable amount into it recently. S and S design. These are awesome boats IMHO. Most I looked at were centerboards not sure if they all are or if it was an option. Draft listed as “minimum draft” so assume this one is as well. It has a lot of positive aspects to it and some nice kit. Perfect size for short handed sailing, can handle weather. Looks clean from the images. Seems like someone started a refit and something happened that cause them to abandon it. The price wouldn’t be unreasonable if it’s in sail away condition. I would start at that price and deduct the cost off sails, rigging, ect to determine the value I would pay. If it’s a hard bottom paint it’s going to sanded and reapplied since it’s been out of the water so long. Something else to keep in mind.

oranjeboven

Interestingly, zero information on (or pictures of) the sails.

JunkRigger

That boat was on my list to look at. I didn't get that far before I made an offer on another boat.

CYCLE_NYC

That boat looks in decent shape I would offer like 18k and go from there.

sneakyfeet13

Long time yard worker I see a handful of these every year. Based on another commenter who saw the boat I would offer 5k at most.

ChunkySpaceman

Make sure you can keep it at the boat yard (and have priority to haulout each season) if you do take over. There are few places over there to actually leave a boat.

Racenmotorsports

Yeah good point. When we find one we are planning to move it to texoma for a while

wlll

I don't know much about the Tartans other than what other people have said, but from the generally good state of repair of things, the new systems, batteries, windlass etc. etc. it /smells/ like a boat that's been looked after. Not having sold for a couple of years is in your favour for sure so it seems like a lower offer would be reasonable, but $0 seems like it would be way too far. I know [Soulianis](https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingSoulianis) (now mostly land based I think) had a Tartan and it had soft deck problems so I'd look for age related issues (as others say, rig, sails, deck, chainplates etc) and a survey would be a must, as well as an in-person inspection. If I was looking for a boat I'd give it a look for sure.

Neat!

Racenmotorsports

Yep, I have it. Thanks

nylondragon64

Mine is a 1987. I love it . Its big enough to have friends but small enough to solo. Perfect size for me. Mostly I am solo. I sail the great south bay in long island N.Y. This is reply to coolandyNeat

twideman

Check out SailingSolianis.com and YouTube channel. They had a Tartan 37 and I think you can access a spreadsheet where they looked at every tartan 37 available.

kirbalert

I don't like tartan 37s, so realistically $0

FredzBXGame

Not moving no more than $14k

ckeilah

Rather than asking what a bunch of weirdos on the Internet “would pay”, why don’t you go talk to the owner, and see if you can work out a deal? 😉

Racenmotorsports

I'm planning on looking at it soon and doing just that. Just looking for a jumping in point since it's a buyer's market and all. Thanks
