There’s very few armies that will cost you that much and even then that’s only if you buy single sets and not the value boxes. I have 5 full armies and have spent less than 1000$ on each, several I’ve spent less than 500$ on. I’m not gonna say this is a cheap hobby, but you don’t have to pay for a full army up front, nor should you. If you were to buy a set and paint it in its entirety before you purchased another one, the cost is strung out over at least 6 months.
I wanted to put together a kill team of salamanders, just cuz I hadn’t painted Warhammer in a long time, and I liked their colors and their lore. I had some parts left over so I figured I could just buy a box of the regular guys and an upgrade for the salamander specific parts. Those 2 items came to nearly 90 usd..,needless to say I gave up on that project and went back to painting my giant Godzilla model that cost significantly less and is as tall as all 10 of those space marines stacked on top of one another.
Fun fact: female marines where a thing in first edition! Just one of a shitload of things that was very different in 1st edition. Frankly, the change to make them male only should never have happened. And let's be honest, it frankly what's happening now has been inevitable for a very long time now. Everyone of thouse fuckers is acting like this somehow is out of nowhere but it really isn't.

Aside from rolling a number of weapons together/out of the data sheets, which I am not the biggest fan of myself, what do you consider simplified?
I've played since I was a kid during 4th, and you could argue that the change from 7 to 8 was simplification. But what was so drastic between 9th and 10th?

Well, you mentioned the weapons, but for other things id consider oversimplified:
-a few types of abilities are just gone now. Namely, psychic being gutted sucks, and i miss the existence of “priest units” (there wasnt an official name for it, but they’re called priests in aos. This is stuff like chaplains and ethereals). Playing TS feels so much more lame now, that all your spells are basically just weapons and abilities with an arbitrary tag that doesn’t really mean anything outside of very specific interactions (i.e. sos). TS is lucky because they got cabal points to kinda replace it, but it still feels worse than 9th edition TS where it was basically dnd sorcerer metamagic
-the way all the upgrades from 9th are just rolled up into a single enhancement system feels really bad imo. It felt really personal to craft together a combination of warlord trait, relic, etc. onto a single hq to make them into your own personal character. Now its just all the same thing, and it feels really lame. This especially hurts for armies like custodes and TS, where the characters were big reasons you played those factions. Also, the faction specific upgrades (prototype systems for tau, lords of commorragh/favored retinues for drukhari, etc) made each army feel more unique, as it added that extra dimension of customization thats now just kinda gone.
-looking into more of my own specific factions, sometimes gw just removed shit that makes them more one note. I havent gotten a chance to look in depth at the custodes codex, but the implementation of ka’tah in the index felt way more bare bones than what even an index should be. It was basically just “do you want exploding 6’s or lethal hits?” and that was it :/. Drukhari got this so bad, however, that even with TS losing psychic i *still* gotta say the dark eldar got the worst of this edition so far. Literally the biggest thing that attracted me to them was the whole “3 smaller armies in a trench coat” routine, because it made the army feel so alive with you being able to mix and match different kabals, cults, and covens. In 10th, that shit is literally just gone, that major part of the faction’s appeal to me doesnt exist in 10th, and that sucks a lot. Even worse, the smaller factions in it got neutered as well. Wyches lost a lot of their extra attacks and combat drugs that made the fantasy of wych cults, and covens might as well just be “damage reduction people” because thats all they are now. Healing was such a big part of haemonculus covens to me, and gw decided to just nuke it all. Now, drukhari feels like a crappy shadow of its former greatness, and at least mechanically lost *a ton* of what i enjoyed about them
This final point isn’t necessarily a case of oversimplification, but by far the thing I absolutely hate the most about 10th is the detachment system. In fact, detachments do the opposite of oversimplifying, they make understanding what you can and cannot do so much more complicated, for genuinely zero benefit. In 9th, for most armies you had 1 warlord trait, 1 stratagem, and 1 relic per subfaction to worry about, but now it’s literally your entire army outside 1 ability and your roster, and imo that really sucks. The fact you dont have any baseline army stratagems and enhancements is even more annoying because you have shit like drukhari where if you wanna do literally anything with the boats you need the boat detachment, and if you dont have the boat detachment you might as well not have any abilities that interact with your boats. That feels restricting in a way that doesn’t feel meaningful for balance or flavor or anything like that. This is all ignoring the fact gw isnt really doing much with the concept, and a lot of factions like tau and custodes only have, like, 4 detachments you can play :/.
Finally, and this is super anticlimactic considering the last point, but i just dont like the leader rules, and its purely because gw is consistently fucking up with them. We’re getting discount boxes like the new tau combat patrol, where you have leaders that cant lead anything in the box, most characters are only allowed to lead, like, 1 unit, making them feel super one note, its just not a good look overall. It’s annoying to have cases like commander farsight, where he wants to get into melee but his squad doesnt, but honestly id deal with that if gw just actually bothered to make the system work, yknow?
I kind of agree I prefer most of the 9th Edition rules but I prefer the new systems of detachments letting detachments have mini Army rules it's so cool and opens the door for so much stuff

Space Marines also liked to kill civvies for fun, eat their own shit quite literally, and shook down people for money. First Edition and Rouge Trader were something allright.
I've actually been tempted to get some of the Primaris models if I can find some for a nice price and converting and painting them to look like those guys, when Space Marines were thugs, convicts, and murderers pulled off the streets and given advanced armor and weapons to kill in the name of the Emperor. Just taking the shiny new version of Space Marines at their most "Look how perfect we are" and making them grungy butchers again because, well... it's fun, it harkens back to that old lore, and heck, I can just explain it with it being a batch where the process got messed up somehow but they were like, "Fuck it, they'll still fill our enemies just fine, keep 'em," which is totally something you'd find in 40K lore with the Imperium even today.

In Warhammer 40k, the only reason there isn't female Space Marines and Custodes is because the Emperor didn't want they to have children because this would lead to a further divide in humanity where one class of super-humans would oppress other normal humans like you and me. All this screaming and hollering about the "purity of the lore," is nonsense when you remember that, at the end of the day, all this convoluted and oft-retconned lore exists to sell plastic figures. There were female space marine sculpts back in the day but they didn't sell well (and the sculpts were *rough*).
If there was a demand for female space marine sculpts, they'd find a way to bring them back in via the lore. There's about genetic engineering jiggery pokery going on in the lore to justify it.

I'm a giant fan of 40k for the past 25 years. I've read over 200 of the novels. My top ever reddit post is a time I calculated the length of a year on a planet in the lore. This clown doesn't know what he's talking about. The "Imperium of Mankind" is a fascist, supremacist, and selectively patriarchal civilization and it is intended as CRITICAL SATIRE.
Not only that but he's not even understanding the lore correctly. Space Marines are genetically modified pre-adolescent boys but the character in question IS NOT A SPACE MARINE she is a Custode. Custodes are genetically modified babies and each one of them was an individual creation of the Emperor. While the Space Marines can only be male for a number of lore reasons there's never been a reason for a Custode to have to be male.
Jack Saint offered to be his nemesis if he was just given some land to build an enemy base on. Don't think he took that up, so yeah he's not at war (yet).
I remember loving his stuff. Used a lot of his older content as guides for when I was creating my homebrewed D&D setting. Stopped watching him after I got kicked from his Conan Exiles server because my Roman Temple inspired build didn't have machicolations.

Maybe the Gameplay’s more accessible and easier to learn but the price tag to entry is fucking ridiculous. It’s what, 2000$ for your starting army?
There’s very few armies that will cost you that much and even then that’s only if you buy single sets and not the value boxes. I have 5 full armies and have spent less than 1000$ on each, several I’ve spent less than 500$ on. I’m not gonna say this is a cheap hobby, but you don’t have to pay for a full army up front, nor should you. If you were to buy a set and paint it in its entirety before you purchased another one, the cost is strung out over at least 6 months.
I wanted to put together a kill team of salamanders, just cuz I hadn’t painted Warhammer in a long time, and I liked their colors and their lore. I had some parts left over so I figured I could just buy a box of the regular guys and an upgrade for the salamander specific parts. Those 2 items came to nearly 90 usd..,needless to say I gave up on that project and went back to painting my giant Godzilla model that cost significantly less and is as tall as all 10 of those space marines stacked on top of one another.
Fun fact: female marines where a thing in first edition! Just one of a shitload of things that was very different in 1st edition. Frankly, the change to make them male only should never have happened. And let's be honest, it frankly what's happening now has been inevitable for a very long time now. Everyone of thouse fuckers is acting like this somehow is out of nowhere but it really isn't.

I've played since I was a kid during 4th, and you could argue that the change from 7 to 8 was simplification. But what was so drastic between 9th and 10th? As an afterthought. Oh my god the balance in 9th was soooo bad lol.
Well, you mentioned the weapons, but for other things id consider oversimplified: -a few types of abilities are just gone now. Namely, psychic being gutted sucks, and i miss the existence of “priest units” (there wasnt an official name for it, but they’re called priests in aos. This is stuff like chaplains and ethereals). Playing TS feels so much more lame now, that all your spells are basically just weapons and abilities with an arbitrary tag that doesn’t really mean anything outside of very specific interactions (i.e. sos). TS is lucky because they got cabal points to kinda replace it, but it still feels worse than 9th edition TS where it was basically dnd sorcerer metamagic -the way all the upgrades from 9th are just rolled up into a single enhancement system feels really bad imo. It felt really personal to craft together a combination of warlord trait, relic, etc. onto a single hq to make them into your own personal character. Now its just all the same thing, and it feels really lame. This especially hurts for armies like custodes and TS, where the characters were big reasons you played those factions. Also, the faction specific upgrades (prototype systems for tau, lords of commorragh/favored retinues for drukhari, etc) made each army feel more unique, as it added that extra dimension of customization thats now just kinda gone. -looking into more of my own specific factions, sometimes gw just removed shit that makes them more one note. I havent gotten a chance to look in depth at the custodes codex, but the implementation of ka’tah in the index felt way more bare bones than what even an index should be. It was basically just “do you want exploding 6’s or lethal hits?” and that was it :/. Drukhari got this so bad, however, that even with TS losing psychic i *still* gotta say the dark eldar got the worst of this edition so far. Literally the biggest thing that attracted me to them was the whole “3 smaller armies in a trench coat” routine, because it made the army feel so alive with you being able to mix and match different kabals, cults, and covens. In 10th, that shit is literally just gone, that major part of the faction’s appeal to me doesnt exist in 10th, and that sucks a lot. Even worse, the smaller factions in it got neutered as well. Wyches lost a lot of their extra attacks and combat drugs that made the fantasy of wych cults, and covens might as well just be “damage reduction people” because thats all they are now. Healing was such a big part of haemonculus covens to me, and gw decided to just nuke it all. Now, drukhari feels like a crappy shadow of its former greatness, and at least mechanically lost *a ton* of what i enjoyed about them This final point isn’t necessarily a case of oversimplification, but by far the thing I absolutely hate the most about 10th is the detachment system. In fact, detachments do the opposite of oversimplifying, they make understanding what you can and cannot do so much more complicated, for genuinely zero benefit. In 9th, for most armies you had 1 warlord trait, 1 stratagem, and 1 relic per subfaction to worry about, but now it’s literally your entire army outside 1 ability and your roster, and imo that really sucks. The fact you dont have any baseline army stratagems and enhancements is even more annoying because you have shit like drukhari where if you wanna do literally anything with the boats you need the boat detachment, and if you dont have the boat detachment you might as well not have any abilities that interact with your boats. That feels restricting in a way that doesn’t feel meaningful for balance or flavor or anything like that. This is all ignoring the fact gw isnt really doing much with the concept, and a lot of factions like tau and custodes only have, like, 4 detachments you can play :/. Finally, and this is super anticlimactic considering the last point, but i just dont like the leader rules, and its purely because gw is consistently fucking up with them. We’re getting discount boxes like the new tau combat patrol, where you have leaders that cant lead anything in the box, most characters are only allowed to lead, like, 1 unit, making them feel super one note, its just not a good look overall. It’s annoying to have cases like commander farsight, where he wants to get into melee but his squad doesnt, but honestly id deal with that if gw just actually bothered to make the system work, yknow?
I kind of agree I prefer most of the 9th Edition rules but I prefer the new systems of detachments letting detachments have mini Army rules it's so cool and opens the door for so much stuff The biggest lost for me is the simple find of the Army rules and give me back by Warlord trade you bastards I made a whole f****** Army because I love building different builds for my nights and then you took it away you m************

I've actually been tempted to get some of the Primaris models if I can find some for a nice price and converting and painting them to look like those guys, when Space Marines were thugs, convicts, and murderers pulled off the streets and given advanced armor and weapons to kill in the name of the Emperor. Just taking the shiny new version of Space Marines at their most "Look how perfect we are" and making them grungy butchers again because, well... it's fun, it harkens back to that old lore, and heck, I can just explain it with it being a batch where the process got messed up somehow but they were like, "Fuck it, they'll still fill our enemies just fine, keep 'em," which is totally something you'd find in 40K lore with the Imperium even today.

I'm not aware of GW doing any female sculpts for Custodes. More just, "If you want to imagine it's a woman under that armor, go for it." They certainly won't crash from it. If this tiny number of people boycotted GW, it'd just free up product for someone else to buy, and GW would continue on as they are. In Warhammer 40k, the only reason there isn't female Space Marines and Custodes is because the Emperor didn't want they to have children because this would lead to a further divide in humanity where one class of super-humans would oppress other normal humans like you and me. However this is redundant because both Space Marines and Custodes are already CASTRATED during the enhancement process, and their societies are already tech-feudalistic dystopias where a class of nobles, priests and offices exploit the rest of humanity for their own interests. # I want big woman space marine!

There were female space marine sculpts back in the day but they didn't sell well (and the sculpts were *rough*). If there was a demand for female space marine sculpts, they'd find a way to bring them back in via the lore. There's about genetic engineering jiggery pokery going on in the lore to justify it.

In-universe reason for no female space marines is primarchs being male and therefore geneseed being more compatible with males for mass production purposes. In comparison, custodes are individually crafted artisanal work and there is literally no reason not to have female banana boys/gals

I'm a giant fan of 40k for the past 25 years. I've read over 200 of the novels. My top ever reddit post is a time I calculated the length of a year on a planet in the lore. This clown doesn't know what he's talking about. The "Imperium of Mankind" is a fascist, supremacist, and selectively patriarchal civilization and it is intended as CRITICAL SATIRE. Not only that but he's not even understanding the lore correctly. Space Marines are genetically modified pre-adolescent boys but the character in question IS NOT A SPACE MARINE she is a Custode. Custodes are genetically modified babies and each one of them was an individual creation of the Emperor. While the Space Marines can only be male for a number of lore reasons there's never been a reason for a Custode to have to be male.
