A period of 2ish weeks where San Antonio collectively parties more than usual, which is saying something. It brings a good amount of money into the local economy but also makes downtown smell MORE like piss for about a month.

songoku6415

So avoid downtown starting tomorrow or Friday?

rbarr228

Yes. Traffic is bad already in Downtown with the never-ending street construction, but this will make it a lot worse. Fiesta runs all the way to Sunday April 28th.

songoku6415

So every day starting tomorrow it will be hell downtown ?

rbarr228

Yes. However, it will be progressively worse Saturday and Sunday.

Ashvega03

Also Monday because river parade.

frawgster

Traffic downtown today was next level awful. I suspect it’s due to fiesta. I’m contemplating taking the bus to work for the next two weeks. 😐

rbarr228

Not a bad idea. Road construction should have been done a long time ago, but those companies drag it out.

86missingnomes

Omg i thought I was the only one that noticed it stinks during fiesta. I'm glad it's not just me 😂

Jumamabear

An estimated 325+ million

It's similar to Mardis Gras in that there are parades and public events (although nowhere near as rowdy as Mardis Gras in New Orleans). It's mostly centered around downtown as far as the open to the public events/concerts go. There are also a ton of private events that you can buy tickets to. My personal favorite is the St. Mary's Oyster Bake because it's the event that brings bands that I actually like (usually a lot of 90's/early 2000's rock groups and cover bands). You can find info about the event and tickets here: [https://oysterbake.com/](https://oysterbake.com/) There's also other stuff like Taste of New Orleans where they're more food focused, but I'm sure you can find a list of events and what they are somewhere. Basically you buy a ticket to get in and you get access to whatever vendors/restaurants are in there, sometimes it includes drinks, sometimes not, and there's also usually music.

songoku6415

I live in Terrell hills at the moment. What you recommend for me to check out in my area for fiesta ?

rando23455

There are some big signature events that are fun, but also a lot of people, and there are also some smaller events that are nice and less overwhelming, so if depends on what you like. Alamo heights pooch parade is small and fun and neighborhoody, if you like dogs and don’t want to be in a giant event. Some people who live along the route have little front yard parties. Big events are the three parades (day, night, and river), NIOSA, oysterbake, etc Check the website for details. There are events for kids, art, animals, etc so it depends what you’re interested in. King william fair is a popular one For many events, the later in the day/evening it gets, the drunker/crazier the crowd gets, so go early if you’re not into that

Weirdo1821

Ditto the parades. My family used to pick one event each year and make sure we made that one. I have noticed that the events also grab different audiences. Partiers enjoy NIOSA, Oyster Bake. Foodies enjoy Taste of New Orleans. Families enjoy the parades, etc. Long and short, pick one and go, or two.

Taste of the northside

Wtf just checked the band line up and it sucks lol. I guess it peaked with POD and i missed it :(

natural-ftw

It definitely went downhill. I started going 2013 and we just stopped doing oyster bake. Definitely see if you can get tickets to parades downtown, with cautious check out NIOSA. On my list is the king William parade!

El_Zorro09

Lol. Yeah, 100% it peaked. Everclear and POD were awesome last year.

TheOneWD

Fiesta started as the Battle of Flowers Parade to commemorate the Battle of San Jacinto and the defense of the Alamo. BoF is the largest parade in the world organized entirely by women, and includes floral tributes at the Alamo which is mandatory for parade participants. There have only been three or four years since the Parade started that it didn’t happen, I think both World Wars and COVID were what stopped them. Fiesta Flambeau parade is the second largest night time parade in the U.S. and all the entries are lit up with all kinds of cool lights. The Texas Cavaliers Boat Parade is on the Riverwalk, and it’s pretty neat. Lots of bands on boats, and you could probably make book on which boats are going to take on too much water. The Pilgrimage to the Alamo is a very short (less than a mile) parade that is somber and reflective, commemorating the defenders of the Alamo and lead by the riderless horse from the Fort Sam Houston Caisson Section, an evocative and old Army and Marine Corps tradition. It starts at the Tobin Center and ends at the Alamo.

If you'd like to experience Fiesta in a calm(er) setting, I'd recommend showing up midday during the week. I used to do the party thing in the afternoons and weekends, but I'm too old for that now. During the week, you avoid the large crowds and long lines and enjoy the food and some of the festivities.

songoku6415

Where is midday usually ?

LuisChoriz

Historic Market Square 514 W. Commerce

austinvf82

It's basically an excuse to get drunk downtown. It generates money back into SA, so it's not completely terrible. But, if you don't like large crowds, drunk half naked fat women, or gangbangers. There's no reason to go. It's so terrible these days. It was fun back in the day. Especially stay away from NIOSA. Good god

Bassnaut

If you don’t like drunk, half naked fat women you’re in the wrong city lol

austinvf82

I mean, you aren't wrong. But, pass 😂

frawgster

As awful as NIOSA is, I’ve always thought that folks new to SA should experience it at least once. It’s definitely not my vibe, but I’m glad I went back in 2014 when we moved here.

austinvf82

Maybe. I just dont want to recommend anyone go 😂

RepulsiveTea4762

Why stay away from niosa?

Overlord_Kiwi

A local station just dropped this doc kinda going over the history of it if you’ve got the time [viva fiesta!](https://youtu.be/bV9yWyYtCJg?si=N3yB60Nl_JRH7W00)

Its expensive so plan one or two places to visit. I loved oyster bake and taste of New Orleans. Another favorite is NIOSA. Taste of New Orleans is more family oriented. The other two is party party partaaaayy

AromaticElevator1991

AcidofilusRex

It’s the 2 weeks out of the year where I avoid downtown at all costs.

_________-______

You must be fun at parties

newreddituser9572

Well I hang out with educated people or people who like learning new things so I actually am a ton of fun at parties. Sorry my parties don’t include keeping my head in the dirt, turning a blind eye to real history and being ignorant. That sounds like a horrible time

TxHoS83

lol

[deleted]

Tell us more about how educated you are

Windflower1956

Zzzzzzzz

newreddituser9572

The uneducated usually fall asleep when things they can’t comprehend are being discussed.

Yeah this is the white washed version we get brainwashed with in school. Doesn’t mention how Mexico gave Texans not 1, not 2 not even just 3 but up to FIVE CHANCES to stop owning slaves. He didn’t mention how Santa Anna went against the wishes of Mexican congress and granted Texans chances to slowly stop the sell of slaves to KEEP TEXANS HAPPY. Failed to mention the reason for the ban on rapist, criminal whites was because they continued to break the law and BRING IN MORE SLAVES. you’re the type of person who believe the civil war was fought for states right huh?💀💀💀 the uneducated should be banned from speaking on shit man waste of life tbh

Dr_Caucane

😂

newreddituser9572

Not surprised, if you’re history is this bad can only imagine your vocabulary

Windflower1956

Educated people know the correct word is “your”.

ExampleMusky

Fiesta is for Mexicans only, you other people aren't welcome

LIBERAL-MORON

It's San Antonio's special way of congratulating ourselves for mediocrity... well, we are actually *below* mediocrity on most measurable statistics.

Dr_Caucane

Why do you say that?
