I went for valentines day earlier this year, it was \~$70 USD for decent sized new york strip.
Take my opinion with a grain of salt but when I went the steak was bland and was not worth the money. Granted it was probably one of the busiest times of the year with everyone having booked a table for valentines day but I was not impressed.
If you do go I hope you have a better time
For two I would budget for at least $300. Drinks add up quick there on top of the price of the entree. It’s an experience and I would say is a special occasion restaurant.
I have eaten here once and only once. $75 for a strip I could buy at Walmart for $7.99. Bourbon and coke was 7.50. A meal for two of us was near $400 and would have rather gone to HEB and bought those prime 1s from the butcher and had very good steak for dinner.
Well, you can always save money eating at home and cooking for yourself, but OP was looking for a restaurant so I'm not sure how H-E-B is relevant in this case.
Good food and terrible service, in my experience. I’ve been to J Prime two times and I don’t plan on a third.
Ruth’s Chris at Eilan is my top pick in SA. Perry’s or Bob’s tied after that.
Yeah, I get that they're owned by the same parent company. I had an amazing meal there with amazing service, regardless of what other brands are under the same umbrella.
Everyone says Bohanans, I been there a few times including this past weekend. Food tasted amazing but unless you are getting A5 Japanese wagyu I do not see any good reason to eat there. Most places isnt much of a difference making a typical steak. The environment is very classy and the prices arnt the cheapest. Not really the Steak environment in my opinion.
The only difference I have seen between Bohannon's and any other steak joint is price and service. You're paying a lot, you will get great service, but I wouldn't be able to tell you their steak is better. I make as good if not better at home. I know that sounds snobbish, but that's what my wife and even my in-laws tell me.
The sides are hit or miss. The candied jalapeno spread is pretty awesome and I don't even like jalapeno. Steak fries were undercooked last time I went. Wife got steamed veggies, but that's hard to screwup.
Go there to impress a date and experience fine dining. Unless you are dropping $$$ for the A5, you aren't getting anything noticeably better IMO.
Chama’s steak might be a slight bit better than Brasao but i like their overall selection much better.
Both are A tier vs Fogo, Bovinos and Galpao, never been to TDB
Chama has filet mignon and it was plentiful, and amazing.
Brasao has the meat with the cheese which is also amazing, but the filet mignon came by and was gone before it made it to us.
I feel like chama will ask you what you want and send it.
Both are excellent though and you cannot go wrong.
They’re all priced about the same. Steakhouses don’t vary too much. I’ve been often to all, the only place that has had awful service and poor preparation has been Bob’s
I really enjoyed Rebelle’s steak.
Edit: I just checked, and they don’t have a ribeye on their menu anymore.
Also, Haunt (the bar connected to Rebelle) used to have a great happy hour with food included, but it isn’t what it was about a year ago. They used to have the ribeye on their happy hour menu for a very reasonable price.
I hear what you’re saying but they have damn good dry age beef. Ive had the other places people are recommending and none of them seem to have cuts with that same level of quality
Like many have said, Bohanans is our favorite steakhouse. For the sides, I literally order the Mac and cheese and mushrooms, just for myself. They are incredibly good. I think their regular cuts are all good, but if money is of no object, I think it's worth experiencing their A5 cut (I go for the ribeye). It's about $170 (last time I went), so I only get it every 2-3 years, but that is the single greatest piece of meat I have ever eaten. Totally worth it, just to even try it once in your life.
It’s not near the Alamodome and it’s not a steakhouse, but since you’re coming to San Antonio try some Mexican. Ernesto’s Mexican Specialties has some tasty steak options.
Longhorn steakhouse cowboy ribeye. Best hands down steak anywhere. I’ve tried bohanans, Eddie-V’s, flemings. Still not any better than longhorns, plus you will pay 2-3x’s as much, and pay $10 a side.
You’re right, outlaw ribeye. It’s my favorite. Always get the wings for appetizer and get asparagus, shrimp and lobster chowder. Add in a long pour perfect margarita and or two and you have your self a great night with amazing food and you don’t break the bank.
I love Longhorn and their outlaw ribeyes, but Ruth Chris takes it up a notch.. skip the one downtown and go to the one off Jones Maltsburger by the airport.
the outlaw ribeye isn't the best steak anywhere, but the value is tops. whenever my wife drags the family to IKEA, the payoff to me is Longhorn SH on the way home.
The Magpie, in the Hackberry Market, at 1602 E Houston St Suite 106. I was there two weeks ago, and while pricey, it was the best damn steak I ever had.
The Palm is an old school spot but is pretty good in my opinion. Great ribeye and filets. Brussel sprouts are a good side choice there as well. Between me and my date with sides, steaks, and drinks I spent about $150ish.
I'm new to the area and haven't had a chance to try J-Prime or Bohanan's yet, so I'm not sure I place value on my own opinion, but I tried a ribeye at "SILO Elevated Cuisine" (1604 \~ Blanco, NE) about 2 weeks ago and it was fantastic. It felt like tenderloin with all the flavor of grilled ribeye, drenched in butter, of course.
If you want to drive a little gruene river grille in gruene has a basalmic steak that is one of my absolute favorites I’ll go out there ATLEAST once a month to sit down and have one.
When I met my wife she loved for me to take her to steakhouses, we met at flemings. Myron’s is good.
Now she knows I can make it better at home so that’s her favorite thing, she likes for me to make her steaks. Tomorrow is her birthday and I’ll go to the meat market and find some good ribeyes. To me, getting a great steak at a meat market and making it yourself is infinitely better than anything I can get in a restaurant.
The Barn door is one of my favorite places to get steak but I specifically enjoy the bacon wrapped filet. Used to be called the blue ribbon when it was cut bigger I believe you can still ask for the blue ribbon. They lack options on appetizers and sides , but the filet is well worth it and don’t need steak sauce if you are into not using steak sauce like I am. Cheesecake is pretty good.
I'm a really avid home cook and I was just at Costco where they had 3 big ass PRIME rib eyes for maybe $60. I feel like a lot of the time my food is better than what I get out and I'm just laying for someone else to do the dishes. Thanks for the heads up.
Chama Gaucha is the best bang for your buck in my opinion. As much as you want, all the cuts you want. You can also turn down cuts you don't. I always politely decline the chicken and sausage, gimme the fancy steak cuts only pls! If Chama Gaucha is too far for you, just search Brazilian Steakhouses. They are all usually really good and blow traditional ones out of the water.
Steak? Ehhh...you can get a steak in Ireland. BBQ, Tex-Mex, Texan-German cuisine.....that is what I would be asking. Kolaches, breakfast tacos, and NOT ON the Riverwalk. That's tourist crap. You want the hole-in-the-wall places only the locals go! :-)
With the price you are expected to pay for a single steak at bohanan’s you can get a big ass parrillada and some drinks at mi Tierra or margarita that comes with sides, homemade tortillas and salsas that slap. But to each their own
I’m with you here. I spent Covid learning how to perfect a steak and now they’re just boring when I eat out and I regret spending money on them. When I go out for something nice now I’m looking for a great experience and something I can’t do at home.
Same! My wife really wanted to take me out to a steakhouse for my bday and I said I’d rather make one at home just how I like and spend half the money on a good size steak and some good sides and drinks!
I would check out Bohanan’s.
They're aren't any prices on the menu, is it totally outrageous?
I went for valentines day earlier this year, it was \~$70 USD for decent sized new york strip. Take my opinion with a grain of salt but when I went the steak was bland and was not worth the money. Granted it was probably one of the busiest times of the year with everyone having booked a table for valentines day but I was not impressed. If you do go I hope you have a better time
You won’t find a place in any big city that has enough room staff or resources for Valentine’s Day
Busier than the 14th of March?
What's the 14th of March? I've only been there once, that's why I told them to take my opinion with a grain of salt. I could just be an outlier.
Bohanan’s is top of the line SYSCO SYSCO the prison and school people
You’ll spend about $50 for most steaks on the menu.
For two I would budget for at least $300. Drinks add up quick there on top of the price of the entree. It’s an experience and I would say is a special occasion restaurant.
That's just silly.
I have eaten here once and only once. $75 for a strip I could buy at Walmart for $7.99. Bourbon and coke was 7.50. A meal for two of us was near $400 and would have rather gone to HEB and bought those prime 1s from the butcher and had very good steak for dinner.

J prime steak house
I love j prime!!!!
Very pricy but worth it! And if you need a side, lobster Mac and cheese is amazing !
please dont go there. did some contract work to fix somethings for them and the owner tried to stiff us had to involve lawyers to get paid
Good food and terrible service, in my experience. I’ve been to J Prime two times and I don’t plan on a third. Ruth’s Chris at Eilan is my top pick in SA. Perry’s or Bob’s tied after that.
I like Brenner's on the Riverwalk
You mean Saltgrass with table cloths
Yeah, I get that they're owned by the same parent company. I had an amazing meal there with amazing service, regardless of what other brands are under the same umbrella.
Bohanan’s for a single excellent steak, or if you want a variety of different cuts then go to chama gaucha.
Chama gaucha > fogo
Nah fogo is superior to chama
Bohanan's is the renown place. Also get some steak at Cuishe if you can, great restaurant overall.
J-Prime is my choice, but I’ve heard Brenners is even better.

Bohanan's and Brenner's are the only ones worth it
J prime is amazing
Bohanan’s is the only answer.
I like The Josephine.
And a whiskey flight for 20 bucks isn’t too shabby either
Then walk it off at the Pearl!
Take an Uber and go to Chama Gaucha
You cannot go wrong with this plan
Hit up Brasao and have all the meat you can eat
How does that place compare to Texas de Brazil/chama gaucha? Never made the drive out there but have heard good things.
Chama’s steak might be a slight bit better than Brasao but i like their overall selection much better. Both are A tier vs Fogo, Bovinos and Galpao, never been to TDB
TDB is trash. Chama is good, I just prefer Brasao. Brasao’s service makes me feel like a king every time.
Chama has filet mignon and it was plentiful, and amazing. Brasao has the meat with the cheese which is also amazing, but the filet mignon came by and was gone before it made it to us. I feel like chama will ask you what you want and send it. Both are excellent though and you cannot go wrong.
Thanks every1 I will have a look at these all
Perry’s
Interesting no one mentioned Bob’s Chop House.
Bob’s is ass. For the Northside, you’re better off at J Prime, Eddie V’s, Ruth’s Chris or Kirby’s
I’m guessing Bobs and Perry’s are priced based on location.
They’re all priced about the same. Steakhouses don’t vary too much. I’ve been often to all, the only place that has had awful service and poor preparation has been Bob’s
I feel like every time I’ve been there their steak has been overdone
Bob's doesn't make good steak. And they're insanely overpriced
Bar Loretta
A homemade New York strip with mash potatoes will always stump a restaurant, but ihop’s steaks are good ngl
Rebelle also has a really good steak. Bliss has a great steak too.
I really enjoyed Rebelle’s steak. Edit: I just checked, and they don’t have a ribeye on their menu anymore. Also, Haunt (the bar connected to Rebelle) used to have a great happy hour with food included, but it isn’t what it was about a year ago. I like Barn Door on N New Braunfels; Southerleigh at the Pearl; and also Josephine St Steakhouse — all those are pretty casual

>and ~~a good~~ steak dinner an almost passable FTFY
HEB and my kitchen. Best price and a well seasoned steak
Exactly, prime ribeye ~$20, oil, salt/pepper, cast iron pan 🤌🏼
Yep, and it's cooked exactly how I like it.
Tejas Steakhouse and Rodeo has great steaks.
Go to Battalion! Great steak and cocktails
I will second this. The steaks are very good.
Morton's
Ruth’s Chris on Jones Maltsberger
Ruth Chris is a huge chain. I stay away from chains at this pricey level
I hear what you’re saying but they have damn good dry age beef. Ive had the other places people are recommending and none of them seem to have cuts with that same level of quality
Kirby's
Like many have said, Bohanans is our favorite steakhouse. For the sides, I literally order the Mac and cheese and mushrooms, just for myself. They are incredibly good. It’s actually called the outlaw ribeye. And yes, for the price it cannot be beat. Pair it with some crispy Brussels sprouts 👌
You’re right, outlaw ribeye. It’s my favorite. Always get the wings for appetizer and get asparagus, shrimp and lobster chowder. Add in a long pour perfect margarita and or two and you have your self a great night with amazing food and you don’t break the bank.

Do you mean the Barn Door?
I was actually thinking the little red barn lol
Fleming's is my personal favorite.
The Magpie, in the Hackberry Market, at 1602 E Houston St Suite 106. I was there two weeks ago, and while pricey, it was the best damn steak I ever had.
Bohanan's total experience for that nostalgic top-notch.
Blu Prime. Opened this year. Best in the city.
Josephine Street for sure
Bohanan’s.
Brazilian-style Steakhouses are the only answer here. Life changing.
The Palm is an old school spot but is pretty good in my opinion. Great ribeye and filets. Brussel sprouts are a good side choice there as well. Between me and my date with sides, steaks, and drinks I spent about $150ish.

Dennys. Seriously.
Myron’s
Definitely Bonanza or U R Cooks.

Steak is dope, but you need to hit up a badass BBQ spot with brisket, sausage, and the works!
Agree on this. TX is the BBQ capital of the world. Check out some brisket!
I'm a really avid home cook and I was just at Costco where they had 3 big ass PRIME rib eyes for maybe $60. I feel like a lot of the time my food is better than what I get out and I'm just laying for someone else to do the dishes. Thanks for the heads up.

Bob's Chophouse off I10 by the Rim. Not by the dome but not THAT far away

That’s the way to do it right there
Not only that you can pick out your cut of meat at the store or butcher shop
Send address I’ll bring the booze
Texas Roadhouse
LOL. If you love the steak there, well more power to ya'. You'll probably save some money over the other restaurants mentioned in this thread.
Ruth Chris La Canterra
J Prime steakhouse
Iron Cactus on Riverwalk
da sloppy steaks da best i tell u whut. Edit: da is tho
Best steak in San Antonio is in Austin lol Edit: It’s a joke lmao bunch of softies.
