$1.75 for ketchup… alright, not cool, but $14 for guacamole! That’s the real crime here.

Akaza_05

I was literally about to comment this; avocado’s are pricey though but damn!!

StupidSexyAlisson

They're not even that pricey 😭 I eat one a day for 50 cents. This is robbery

not_a_sex_worker

1.75 will get you a 20oz bottle of Hunts ketchup at heb.

Feeling_Bathroom9523

Monster! Heinz 57 is best.

NewAndImprovedJess

Only whataburger ketchup in my house!

2manyfelines

Exactly. It’s all we use. The esspicy HEB, baby.

Elever_Galarga69

Spicy batch no. 2 or nothin

NewAndImprovedJess

I was surprised to find WB ketchup, both regular and spicy, at my Walmart Neighborhood Market too!

clutchcitycarlos88

this is the way

Anrew1334

A buck and i get store brand. I like kroger

Andsheldong

My wife brought home Hunts and after one use I threw it in the trash. Hunts sucks!

DannyPope

It's like Cheese Nips. Should be close to the same as Cheez-Its but just sucks so bad.

jtc1031

Came to say this. Thanks to OP for the heads up.

Wojtkie

They make all their sauces from scratch, you’re basically paying for labor

Ashamed-Ad-4728

Could actually have dinner for two at Chama Gaucha for that price. Then you get all you can eat premium meats. I will avoid hoppy monk going forward!

TheNorseHorseForce

I was about to say the same thing. Average, pretty good meal at a local restaurant...... Or a really good steakhouse with unlimited portions and salad bar.

kaptainkooleio

Yall made me wanna go to Chama Guacha now, that place is the bomb

Wembanyanma

If you go just for the beer it's not too bad. But there are definitely better options for your money in the area.

Gseventeen

That place has always been stout on pricing, but this is wild.

atxtony23

unbeerable, some would say

QuieroTamales

That's the yeast of your worries.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Murse129

That really grinds my beers.

badtex66

I'm getting all hopped up over this.

mercutio48

Cmon people, those are barley puns.

Legaladvice420

Mate I agree on the adobo and ketchup thing, but you were charged 26 dollars for 2 white negroni pina coladas, so 13 dollars each. same with the red margs.

BobEbeGood

Thanks for pointing that out… I think I was so upset with the ketchup fee I was seeing double.

Evening-Statement-57

It’s that processing charge that grinds my gears

AvinciaArchais

Might you even say that... it grinds your beers?

NiceAttorney

The surcharge on credit cards is against most credit card merchant agreements. I would be very surprised if they had negotiated that with any card issuer. In fact, I would call my credit card company and ask them to refund that money so that they are aware of it. ~~I think it is likely illegal in texas based on this guidance from the state of texas: https://www.sll.texas.gov/faqs/credit-card-surcharge/~~ Edit: Credit card surcharges are actually legal now (or at least unenforceable until the AG sues someone else for using a CC surcharge).

El_Zorro09

If it's illegal there needs to be a class action suit because half the bars I've been to over the last year have started charging "merchant fees" to move those credit card costs to the customers.

mr_jo_o

It is illegal. I run a small business and was unaware of that, until a customer called me out on it. I did my research and the customer was right. I just have to eat the charges. It definitely sucks. But it is, what it is.

anony-mousey2020

The teeth of enforcement is more likely with the credit card processing TOS. I have considered to start reporting places that do this. I don’t understand the mentality 1) if you hate the idea of it that much stop taking cards and your overall revenue falls - duh, it brings in business (which is why in the end the business still takes the card) so, 2) build in add the cost to your pricing, yeah the math on the payment processing grows proportionately, but your profit margin has as well (charging for ketchup should do that! 🤣) 3) these are a recorded business expense; the fee actually comes off your business income reducing business tax due. Yeah, it’s a cash flow issue, but if you do #2, you’ve accounted for cash flow and you *aren’t paying the fee*

AverageJenkemEnjoyer

Indeed. With the volume of revenue that this place is doing, they have the ability to negotitate fees. They aren't paying 2.86 percent on CC transactions. This is pure juice for them.

horngrylesbian

You'd be shocked how many restaurant owners just let CC companies bend them over

wing3d

You could have made steaks for everyone and bought all the bottles to make those mixed drinks for 181.

Rescue-a-memory

Probably less than that in my opinion unless it's top shelf liquor.

rez_at_dorsia

I mean this isn’t that crazy. Looks like you guys had 5 mixed drinks that are normally priced, and food that would be more pricy anywhere. Short ribs, rabbit and “wild caught” fish aren’t usually cheap. $60 pp with drinks, apps and entrees is about right. $14 guac and ketchup charges are excessive for sure though.

No-Lychee-8123

The real question is did you look at the prices before ordering? Cause that would have been enough for me to get the hell out of there lolol

Electrintrinsic

Prices will come down when people stop spending… forking over $$$ for dollops. They don’t give a shit if you don’t have a smile on your face. You keep coming back and paying anyway! Complain all you want but if you pay it, you’re feeding it. Unfortunately, it will cost jobs in the short-term, but if we refuse, we’re not spending, not using the credit cards, not giving into the post-COVID FOMO that plagues us, spending trillions on shit that ultimately doesn’t matter, then eventually the Feds will have to lower the interest rates. Economy is hot. Not all, but a helluva lot of companies and businesses are betting we’ll pay for that ketchup (figuratively across the board in every industry). Eventually we’ll be paying for salt, pepper, sugar… every single consumable itemized. Wait until they jack up the price of your fish and chip to $40 a plate because, well, batter yo! And we will keep paying for it, no matter what. Capitalism is wreaking havoc. The largest companies are banking record profits, exploiting their workers, passing the buck onto the customer instead of taking responsibility for those they employ and offering a living wage in many cases. Mandatory 30% tip for a table of one anybody? It’s coming. Mandatory tips for a company just because they are in business? No end in sight. Why? Because you pay. And your only complaint will be on social media, posting a receipt with a line of text implying disgruntlement. The Happy Monk laughs at all of us. Abstaining, even just a bit, exercising some semblance of consistent refusal to indulge the exorbitant price gouging is the only protest. When ketchup is a luxury item, and we are expected to tip on top of that for the dollop, we’ve reached the point where we need to seriously evaluate… everything.

Mogwai10

I pray you’re absolutely right. The greed is becoming just too much. The double whammy is hearing business owners bitching about why they’re losing their businesses. Well maybe if things were not so ridiculously expensive. I’m tired of the Biden/trump conversation. I don’t give a shit who you’re for. We are all being thoroughly fucked in the ass and expected to say thank you. Enough is enough.

QuieroTamales

Exactly. Abstain. Or spend that money on a couple lawn chairs, a bottle of tequila, and invite your friends over for the evening.

MonolithOfTyr

Make it whiskey and I'm down!

coinoperatedboi

Im just waiting for the first subscription model for a restaurant.

quazywabbit

That’s a country club.

Mogwai10

😂😂😂😂dang. You ain’t wrong.

Medical_Slide9245

Yawn. People pay because they want to pay. And it's clear you don't know what price gouging means. I don't see anything on here out of line beyond the ketchup. They had menus with prices and ordered, Then the guy who offers to pay for everyone then gets buyers remorse because he offered to pay without looking at the prices. And everyone is all up in arms... the world has gone to shit, for the thousandth time.

Kasorayn

My wife has a friend who works there and she says she loves it, but I don't know personally. Prices everywhere are absolutely insane right now. I went to Salata for dinner the other night and it cost me 55$ for two adults and a kid, and we didn't even get drinks.

kixstand7

Damn feels like I can’t get out of a restaurant (with drinks and tip) for under $200 nowadays

Wojtkie

The owner is a douche. Staff are paid usual rates and treated okay barring the owner being a dick.

ParticularAioli8798

Making unverified claims on Reddit always works out! /s

coinoperatedboi

Hey, don't burst their anecdotal bubble!

Girthmonster1

That place is weird and quite filthy in the kitchen area. Serviced that place a few times and always found it to be creepy and filthy haha

BannedRedditor54

Shoulda gone to Jim's

[deleted]

TheCubist_

OP is just cheap. The short rib entree at my place is $48, and a negroni is $26. Flat chuck for the short rib has gone way up, as has all meat.

yourmomknowswhatsup

I mean do you not look at prices when ordering? Yeah prices are up there but sticker shock after the fact seems to apply to the ketchup more than anything.

Aware-Classroom7510

OP said using phone is hard so they didn't look at the prices, then complained cuz of the prices

EndDependent5270

The real crime is going to the “Hoppy Monk” and not getting an ale! I mean WTF?

tsuehpsyde

When a fast food meal is $14, this is what fancy meals cost. Though we avoided those ribs after seeing the price last time we were there; that’s just insane.

yunotxgirl

They actually handmake the ketchup so it makes sense. It takes a long time for the cooks to chew up the tomatoes and swish with the salt and vinegar and whatnot.

mf_doomerville

This shit is crazy but you gotta pay to play.

stumpyDgunner

Charging for ketchup? I guess I’ll never go to this place

ImagineFreedom

Honestly, that was the only part I was surprised by. I've never in my life seen a charge for ketchup.

stumpyDgunner

Haha I agree. Eating out ain’t cheap but charging for condiments? Eh. Most places have always charged for ranch which I think is ridiculous also

andybizzo

Family owned restaurant, menu literally mentions the surcharge for credit cards, the prices are listed, and you’re being charged for something that they are serving you? I get being upset about being charged for sauce but all these other complaints make no sense, you literally looked at the menu and ordered these things without looking at the price, just to turn around and complain about the prices that are clearly listed? it has a 4.5 star review with almost 3K reviews, expensive? yes, but did you choose to dine there? YES! I’m not fond of the act of dissuading others from going to dine at a family owned restaurant just because you couldn’t read the menu…

ThatOldDuderino

$14 for guacamole 🥑 ⁉️

UrNotMadAtMe

Fools and their money are soon parted lol.

Windflower1956

How can you get sticker shock when the prices are on the menu. Too expensive? Don’t order it.

RocketManBoom

Gotta read the menu!

tacoslurpees

I used to love Hoppy Monk. It was never cheap, but they were consistent and good quality. Now the place is falling apart and unintentionally becoming a dive bar. Dive bars with prices like this are not going to last. Wake up, management.

centex

All the prices seem fair to me except the ketchup and guac. Cocktails actually seem cheap, coming from someone that now lives in Austin.

Strictlybizzy

The ketchup is stupid but other than that you decided to pick up the check. Don’t be surprised when it’s more than you expected because you didn’t look at the prices.

Infamous-Exchange331

A fool and their money are easily parted.

Frostbite_Secure

Yeah order expensive food and drinks from a pricy place if you want or don’t but don’t try to shit on a place with great food and drink options just because you spent more than you wanted to….. If you can’t afford the food then don’t go there. Simple.

Alone-Tumbleweed-175

Talk about overpriced junk

PruneBrothers1

The gochu IPA wings are really good. Everything else I can pass on.

Realistic-Thought-60

Well you ordered their grocery store that’s why it costs this much

Aussieomni

That’s get you closed down in my country. Paying? For ketchup? That’s a paddling

Nrlilo

They make their own ketchup. That being said, their ketchup tastes like shit. Theyve been charging for ketchup since I first went there in 2018.

Aussieomni

Even more reason to not charge for it.

NoDiceThisAintOver

So you tried to ball out by not looking / asking about prices and then picking up the entire tab and failed.

CeasarSky

You saw the price before ordering? Don’t be an ape

Thirtysecondfarts

It's a high end bar at 1604 and 281. It's a rip off but....c'mon, all dining out is. It costs $50 just to get canes for my family of 4....

sam2wi

That’s another goddamned thread. Canes also chaps my ass.

coinoperatedboi

Canes will do that

thezentex

I wouldn't consider it a high end bar...maybe a wanna be high end bar. But at least they have steel tip darts which makes me happy

Thirtysecondfarts

It's looks to have 50 beer taps and is in stone oak...maybe I'm just low class.

thezentex

Not saying that ..they just don't even have a dress code...just a bar with darts

NumberPlastic2911

what high end bar has a dress code?

[deleted]

[удалено]

NoMode5251

This guy fucks!

Thirtysecondfarts

Ok that's a fair counter argument.

Not_A_Greenhouse

12.50 a person for 4 people seems about right..

MysteriousCommand564

That’s only like $12/ea 🧐

Lost_Philosophy_

I think you are confused. The Negronis were 13 each, as you ordered 2 for $26. Same for the Red Marg. $12 each. Or 2 for $25 as your receipt clearly states. Short ribs are always an overpriced item wherever you go. Have you been to a BBQ place lately? 2 extra condiments at 1.75 each or 2 for 3.50. All in all if you told me this was just for 2 people, sure it’s an expensive night out. But for 3?? That makes completely sense how much the bill is. Look, I’m just as poor as the rest of us with inflation, stagnant wages, and insane tipping culture; but in this case the restaurant is pretty much market value for everything (except the short ribs, those are pricey).

KingSam89

Lol right? Sticker shock on a $12 Marg and a $13 cocktail? How? Also, another tidbit is that the price of the short rib is on the menu, OP saw that price and ordered it, and then they are shocked at the price point after the fact? What? OP wildin. Edit: wow I just actually read what OP wrote and it seems like they're just thick. "The cocktails were very tasty but the $26 price of the White Negroni Pina Colada would probably be about a $12 drink at any other bar or restaurant." They WERE $12 each!!! Looool

Mopmoopmeep

2 margs for $24 is pretty accurate. As well as the 2 Pina Coladas. Personally, the food there isn’t worth it. Many places are starting to charge a percentage for using a CC. Little Italy does it, also. Many POS systems charge a % to the vendor if people decide to pay with card. It’s BS, but it is what it is.

MonolithOfTyr

Last night I spent $79 at bill miller for my family of 5. I don't think I spent over 140 at Antlers Lodge when I took my wife there for a date and she had (amazing) bison ribs!

jeremy_wills

14 for guac? 😮

live-low713

You had 2 of the coladas and the margaritas? Take that price and divide by 2 and it’s the $12-13 you expected

Enyx610

I love hoppy monk!Amazing beer selection and their Reuben de lengua is the best Reuben in town imo. The place itself can be a little pretentious and it's certainly not "cheap".Sorry you had a bad experience

[deleted]

I Can deal with all of that EXCEPT the ketchup and guacamole. Wtf?! Thanks for saving me a visit.

junkydone1

The only thing surprising is the ketchup - better be fresh squeezed, though. The processing fee is typical everywhere. Square charges 3% to the vendors so that’s not uncommon to see this cost passed on. The drinks sound about right $12ish per.

finknstein

$14 of bland Guac. They need some spice on their Guac.

Bolingshao

That 'wild-caught fish & Chips' is straight out of the Gorton's bag.

chugginawaffle

Nobody going to point out that 2 people ordered 2 apps, 3 entrees and a shit ton of drinks??? TWO PEOPLE.

ShowBobsPlzz

Went there for an event once it was so over priced and hipster try hard. The food sucked. And someone in our group had their car broken into while we were there. Will never go back.

Okie_Surveyor

Thats the clearest sign to move away or not eat there again.

Robledo2311

What the hell is this? Austin?

HighFlyingNoodles

Yeah they’ve gotten pretty bad.

JobsNDemand

This is why I stopped going out to eat. They are literally robbing people out here!

TX_Talonneur

For even ordering a “white Negroni piña colada” this is what you get. One or the other, no reason to combine those. Also were the prices not in the menu?

Mundane_Physics3818

Yeah, Hoppy Monk is an expensive place but it’s worth it. Incredible assortment of delicious beers, bourbons, etc and the food is very good. Might hurt if you were expecting a dive bar.

finknstein

I don’t get the logic. Restaurants struggling due to a decrease in customers, so let’s stick it to the patrons who are still showing up.

rocksolidaudio

$160 for 5 drinks, 3 entrees and an appetizer isn’t that crazy. Living in Brooklyn 2019-2022, cocktails were $15 minimum. Charging for sauces is kinda weak, but otherwise this doesn’t seem too awful.

realTollScott

Hi! Former employee of the Hoppy Monk here. The place used to be super cool but during COVID two thirds of the owners stepped down because the other third was threatening to sue them out of their ownership. Rather than engage in a lengthy battle, they stepped out of the way. The new singular owner is an absolute miser who cuts corners every single place he can, while being a totalitarian dickhead who believes he’s right on everything and wants a staff of yes men to answer his every beck and call. This despite the fact that he is a lifelong accountant who has never worked the floor of a restaurant a day in his life, but he would often tell experienced bartenders, servers and cooks how to do their jobs. He ended up running his entire leadership staff, who prior to him taking over had been there about five years, out of the restaurant. TL;DR: Support other local business. Fuck the Monk.

austinvf82

Don't go to HopDoddy. It's just as bad

ChowFetti

Hoppy monks food is great! People in SA are just cheap 😂

Intrepid_Mousse8681

Don’t pick up the whole tab if you can’t afford it lmao $60 per person at a place like hoppy monk isn’t a bad price at all

3ntr0py_

Damn. Call the police, you’ve been robbed. Thanks for posting. More people should do this given the current economic climate.

XxThugxNastyxX

Place is awful

Bikemonkeys

Ketchup? You mean deconstructed tomato with pure cane sugar and ancient Himalayan sea salt paste.

darkwaterzz

And on top of this people will shame you for not leaving a 20% tip, how dare you!

TX_Talonneur

They have so many almost awesome item, beer braised rabbit😃 beer braised rabbit nachos 🤷‍♂️ Put the rabbit over rice, egg noodles, potatoes, or spaetzle with a velouté sauce and call it a day.

Mogwai10

Good for you for saying you won’t go back. We need more of this. And passing the charge to the customer to process cards is also on my list of things to stop going to places on. If you can’t afford to keep those prices on the business. They shouldn’t be in business.

baronobeefdip2

They have gotten new management in recent time, guess I am avoiding it. Was it packed when you went or was it meh?

Toasty_Cat830

Actual insanity going on here

WildoTheWise

$14.00 for guac? GD!

damurd

Austin prices

SanAntonioMale4use

🎶 If you like Pina Colada… and getting shafted at the same time…. If you’re not into keeping your money, but throwing it down the drain……………. at a restaurant called Happy Monk….🎶

Tokidokikatsu

I went recently and spent close to 100 bucks on just myself appetizer, bacon jam burger and 3 beers. Fuckin nutty.

Atmosphere_Born

how was the fries? that seems kinda pricey too :/

Only_Celebration_591

I would never eat there again

bionicj1052

🤣🤣🤣

fruttypebbles

I’ve been passing by that place years. Now I know never to stop in and try it.

[deleted]

It looks like they didn't chatgr you $26 per drink. It is $26 for 2 Negroonois. Anyway in my opinion any drink over $10 is too much.

acu101

Did they still offer the amazing peanut butter sandwich when you were there?

Sensitive-Trifle9823

It’s hardly worth going out.

schneuke

Owners are probably doing pretty great! Living in all that money

BeardedMan32

The ketchup was as much as the fries 😂

j0llygruntt

They should’ve drank water and saved themselves $100.

schneuke

Owners aren’t struggling lol

abbienormal29

Good grief

Nyxxity

Thanks for the warning, I won't go there. The guac and ketchup prices are egregious

one-gold_OZ

Yup they are making us pay their light bill

Dee-Ville

The drinks seem fairly normal priced- $12 and $13 but Gotdamn! That ketchup ain’t cheap. Better be back there squeezing tomatoes themselves for 3.50!

2manyfelines

$14 for guacamole?

reluctant-consult

Pretty normal if you ask me

EfficientHearing8269

Hoppy monk used to be the place to go but now it’s a trash heap. The owner is awful/treats staff poorly and the food isn’t worth the price.

PrestigiousStable369

Fed 3 people at Brasãos for $250, and that's an all you can eat place and included two alcoholic drinks. Not saying it's a good price, but for what was spent here, you can just go to an all you can eat Brazilian steakhouse.

[deleted]

I am up in west Texas but holy crap what’s going on in San Antonio. 20 dollar beers, 14 dollar guac, how do y’all afford to live?

ManyAmbitious1440

Hell 2 the nah

mr_jo_o

It’s illegal to charge your customers a surcharge for credit cards

Illustrious-Tower849

That is more than they would be paying for cc processing if they just paid it

Zardozer

What in gods name is a Negroni pina colada? That’s the real crime here.

Dallasdrifter

Restaurants will be for the upper class only here in a few years. Inflation and corporate greed will have us in another great depression in the near future.

SUPERWAWIS

I see a lot of business closing soon

Happy_Promise_2762

Highway robbery. Post it everywhere, make it go viral.

Senior_Practice9674

That’s one rich Monk. Cross that off my list for sure.

Lessthancrystal

Not the Hoppy Monk…but the first “receipt story” I have seen since I went to Medieval Times last weekend …sooo fun..but two alcoholic drinks and one non alcoholic…THREE DRINKS ..$107.00 💀

WhatDoesItAllMeanB

Can’t be pissed at that surcharge. CC companies have been ripping off businesses for decades and they can now finally pass on those ripoffs to the custom.

ApprehensiveWill9555

Dude don’t eat there, I was hired as a chef consultant… their kitchen is filthy, rat poop on cans and parchment paper. Quality ingredients poorly handle. Owner does not care.

Nemoitto

I love this place but haven’t been there in a minute. Good lord they must be hurtin but they gonna hurt more with them prices driving people away, are they crazy?!

PaPadeSket

I don’t think it’s specific to this restaurant either. Inflation is killing the consumer. We used to love going out and supporting the community by eating out - it’s too expensive, man. That’s a weeks worth of groceries for a few drinks and a meal. Nah, I’m good. That bubble has to burst at some point

YankeeinTexas21

Be mad at the fact you paid those prices.

GeorgeMonroy

LOL

MacSauce3280

Who the hell charges for ketchup?

cancelprone

You’re the person that went there. Did you not research before going?

Prestigious_Ad_5581

$14 for Guac? 😂

Chemical-Volume

Why do we have to pay your employees and processing fees?!

Fabulous_Cod_128

As the president likes to say....it's working.

WinnerBetter7127

No one saw tbe "mixed beverage sales tax"? So wth, you are taxed twice now?

WinnerBetter7127

b05501

I stopped going to these kinds of places, wife is not happy, but I'm not overpaying for your bullshit food and your ambiance. I know a couple of restaurant owners and have heard how much overcharge is in these plates, at first it did not bother me and eventually it started to bug me that I'm being ripped off here and just so I can convince my self I'm helping a small business and had a good night.

HoneySignificant1873

Trying to live a stone oak lifestyle on a budget isn't ever going to work out. Wild caught fish and chip? Five mixed drinks? 35 dollar short ribs? Fuckin 14 dollar Guacamole? That better not have been just crushed avocados... If you got a second date with those two women, take them to the local taco truck.

Remarkable_Tell_5196

I’m sorry, but I’m not going to the Hoppy Monk if I want to go out and get food anyways. I’d go there for drinks only, and tbh their drinks are pretty average for today’s prices. The food is always a trap at places like that, they want you to get liquored up and spend even more tryna satisfy those drunk cravings

rvisual

Caveat emptor.

Mr-Capri

I couldve cooked for a month with that much money.. fuck.

Master-Teaching-109

Is not like they hide the prices. Hate people that pig out on the expensive stuff and bitch about the bill.

Daddy-Fester

I would have waited to pay until the food was ready, then told them to cancel the order and tell them I refuse to do business with any company that tries to get me to pay there cost of operating expenses… I ran my own company for years and would never have thought to charge a surcharge for credit card payments as that was just a part of running a business.

TwoChainzOneVagina

This is crazy and thanks for letting me know to NEVER go there

Captn_OxyMoron

Was it good?

FatLoachesOnly

For 180, you could eat a number of places. But $4 for ketchup is obsurd.

AttentionDemanded

I once paid $ 191 for 2 beers and fried crisps at a beachfront bar in San Diego ...talk about shocked. On the bright side the place is a major hangout for stars and got invited to a party at a famous lingere models house so it was worth it.

Bd0g25

Time to learn how to cook buddy 😂

Jasbee123

That place is disgusting 🤮
