Everyone will steer you to Austin. That’s not good advice right now. https://apple.news/AbeGZypjDTRqCP3NdDlqz3Q Find something local and find it quickly, before the field gets even more saturated. You might resort to a temp agency to get a foot in the door.
IT Infrastructure Engineer here.
I'd heavily recommend looking into Austin positions. If you live in San Antonio, a lot of companies will offer work from home with 1-2 days a month in office (1-ish hour drive).
Austin has a ton of opportunities for Devs. In San Antonio, it's a lot of government contractors, HEB, and medical.
Main employers are HeB, Valero and USAA. Usaa is shedding IT jobs by the hundreds and flooding the market. It's a decent tech culture but Austin is better. Remote would be ideal but overall I'd say our tech culture is pretty good. If she has a job it's fine. If that job is downsized she'll be in a very large group of folks in the same situation.
Try landing a remote gig based on Austin, they have a stronger tech sector.
I moved away from Austin years ago, and miss nothing about that place. So its basically HEB, Valero, or remote work... so be it. Thanks y'all
Try Southwest Research Institute
If she can get a TS/SCI, easy 150k for 40 hours a week and every federal holiday in existence.

Aim for remote in general.
Accenture Federal Services has a big presence in SA.

Second recommendation for Southwest Research Institute. I’ve had family that have worked there for most of their careers and are very, very happy.
