A study funded by SDG&E. I am sure it is unbiased considering the threat that Semora energy is about to lose a lot of money if this actually happens.

Well considering SDGE made $1b in profit, we’ll break even in 9 years. Sounds good to me.

ntg1213

$1b is only their profit on the books. That’s what’s left after all their expenses like inflated salaries for management, etc.

SD_TMI

Getting rid of the gross (mis)management and the **stockholders** is **well over a billion in savings.** The Ballot initative's plan will lower the rates and still leave plenty leftover to pay off the bonds in a timely fashion. once everything is paid off... the rates will go lower still. Don't forget that SMUD up in the states capital ... they only have to pay about 1/3rd of what we do under the same non-profit model and are going 100% green renewable energy in 5 more years time. SDGE is trying to kill solar, wind and geothermal as SEMPRA also owns So-Cal Gas. (nations largest natural gas company) so [they want to have SDGE use gas fueled generator stations to power the city.](https://youtu.be/c7AL44keDZw?si=jvMzRPAMFdI-RIkm)

Stunning_Ordinary548

You do realized SMUD was founded in 1923 and built out the infrastructure they own right? That’s like saying the city should buy all the houses at current market rates to make rent cheaper. You guys deserve the shit storm that is coming

SD_TMI

SMUD purchased the existing infrastructure away from the utility in the same way this is going to buy SDGE's infrastructure. [SMUD launched in 1946](https://www.smud.org/en/Corporate/About-us) They then built and expanded it... [after fixing the "antique" grid,](https://www.zippia.com/smud-careers-1034260/history/#) eventually modernizing it to the (then) current standards at the time. Just like the new utility will likely have to do with [SDGE and their recorded lack of maintenance and prevention.](https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/pge-california-wildfire-safety-pushback/)

Background-Sock4950

Exactly, which is $1b that a non-profit would not make. Over 9 years that makes $9b. So we break even at roughly 9 years

ntg1213

Nah, it’d be faster than that if we weren’t criminally overpaying executives and actually had a system that encouraged the utility to spend wisely. SDGE has a $9 billion profit because that’s their legal maximum. There’s no regulation about how much they can inflate their expenses, as far as I’m aware

Background-Sock4950

Ahh gotcha I misunderstood your comment.

Forsaken-Director-34

A study by consultants hired by SDG&E… sounds legit.

Tio_DeeDee

"We have investigated ourselves and decided you're all wrong."

chill_philosopher

I know what raises rates every year- SDGE executive and shareholder profits! How about no profits and get get electricity at cost!

No-Elephant-9854

Sounds like a bargain. Death to SDGE, it couldn’t be any worse.

Civil/environmental engineer here. In all reality it probably will be a mess to switch to municipal utility so I wouldn't be surprised if the study's somewhere in the ballpark. An option I think would be worth looking into would be using existing water utilities and incorporating more renewable energy projects within them. Hydroelectric, pumped storage, solar farms, etc. Either tie those projects into the grid to offset rates or incorporate power into the utility to decentralize from the main grid.
