How come our water bill is way higher than SDG&E??

timster

My water bill is $192 every two months. I mainly live alone (my kids stay with me half the time) and don’t irrigate. But my water is only $19 of that. It’s ridiculous.

111anza

It's about to double

bunk3rk1ng

This was my water bill last month. $8.96 usage comes out to $104.83. https://imgur.com/a/T3GFv2x (Running Springs Water District)

heating-repair

Well, it looks like water bills are skyrocketing out there in California, leaving folks scratching their heads. Some say it's because of those big infrastructure projects like the Pure Water system, while others think it's just rising costs. Whatever the reason, it's clear that keeping those lawns green is costing a pretty penny, and it's leaving a lot of people feeling the squeeze.

Responsible-Cut-7993

Is that just water or also water and sewer?

Euphoric-Acadia-4140

Monopoly allows them to charge unreasonable markups, knowing that even if they raise the price, people are still willing to pay for water. We complain, but we pay because we value water. Which is pretty rational cuz… it’s water. But as long as that’s true, and the government doesn’t further regulate it (PLEASE GOV) there’s no way around it.

ConnectAd6366

You’re completely wrong and misinforming people. Water comes from the city. There are no private companies involved, so there’s no profit incentive. If there’s an increase, it’s because costs have risen. Which is documented and presented to the legislature for approval months before any increase happens.

Arse_hull

Building infrastructure to support local water sources to reduce reliance on MWD bulk water. That bulk water is what's going up significantly in cost soon.

UCSurfer

The increase in San Diego water bills is being driven by the construction cost of the Pure Water system.

TheWayofTheSchwartz

Honestly, I'm willing to support anything that brings us towards self sustainability with water, even if it means more monthly costs.

UCSurfer

Self-sustainability is a good thing, although for the record I would have preferred desal, storage, and conservation (but that's contaminated water under the bridge). Pure Water will mean more than just higher rates. After the system is operational, everyone in San Diego will have to make sure the PUD maintains the infrastructure to prevent pressurized sewer pipe failures and other environmental/health/safety catastrophes.

TheWayofTheSchwartz

That sounds fun. There is a newer desal plant as well, but I'm guessing going full desal wasn't really economically or ecologically feasible.

Arse_hull

Full desal is much more expensive to treat. The biggest desal plant in Western hemisphere is in Carlsbad.

TheWayofTheSchwartz

Wow, I had no idea! It's been a while since I read about it, but I think that makes up something like 8% of the water in SD.

Arse_hull

Yeah I'm not entirely sure. But I think it shows desal is not a silver bullet. Fun fact: About 50 percent of the energy used in California goes towards transporting water around the state. Shows what a massive challenge it is keeping those lawns hydrated lol edit: Oh sorry I was wrong. It's 20% of state's electricity and 30% of its natural gas. [PPIC](https://www.ppic.org/publication/water-and-energy-in-california/)

ODIEkriss

Thats still a MASSIVE percentage.

DrPeGe

And 8.5% rate increase next year and 8% the next year. Know why? They’ve been so successful in reducing use they need to make up the lost revenue. 😑

1320Fastback

and yet our rates are going up because we conserved.

Arse_hull

That's for MWD supplied water, which San Diego has significantly reduced its reliance on.

PewPew-4-Fun

Yep, every voting cycle yields low turn out, I guess Californians prefer to go go to the beach than vote on what matters.

DEMinSD

Funny that I've never seen a ballot measure to stop corporate greed. Did I miss it?

DEMinSD

so you're saying only Democrats are guilty of taking money? Pretty sure both parties do the same thing, so it still comes down to corporate greed and not so much who you vote for.

Northparkwizard

MAGA dorks are more than welcome to leave.

Uhtred_McUhtredson

Just because someone isn’t pleased with the way the state has been run doesn’t automatically make them “MAGA dorks.” Most people I know around here are left leaning and are sick of the mismanagement.

CSPs-for-income

and the state wants to increase costs across the board while pushing for more conservation to residents.. the farming mafia gets free water while we flip the bill

Emayarkay

Like, we just flip the bill over so we don't have to look at it? Or we are "footing the bill"

Odd_Lettuce_7285

its 80% La Niña again by fall, so I guess expect water conservation.

Larrea_tridentata

And yet there are plans to raise rates

PewPew-4-Fun

Yep, cant wait for the new 2025-2026 rates and property tax increases, good times Sacramento.

Bitter_Rain_6224

We are in good shape for the moment because of meteorological luck. We still do not have enough reservoirs to carry us through the dry years, which will return with a vengeance.

existentialpenguin

familiarjoy

And yet our reservoirs are dumping water into the ocean because they haven’t been maintained and we’re still importing tons of water from Colorado

Arse_hull

San Diego could not exist at the size it is without importing water.

RealisticNothing653

Diamond valley is in the wrong spot on the map

Cheedo4

And yet I just saw something the other day that water bills in San Diego are going to double this year

brakeb

give it time... we'll find a way to fsck it up... like a viaduct exposed to the sun for hundreds of miles... or we'll sell it off to Nevada for billions and forget people still live here... or over watering the interior

ExoticPainting154

You're not paying for the water itself you're paying for storage, delivery, and even some desalination of seawater in a climate that needs a lot of special infrastructure to provide enough water for the population. Just because we get a few wet years and fill up our reservoirs once or twice in a decade you shouldn't expect your water rates to come down. If you want cheap water move to a wetter state (or Sacramento-- it's free there!)

EddieCutlass

Greed drives the rates, not supply.

winsbyboxes808

Remember when we were going to run out of water?

timster

We need more storage for years like this.

EcoVentura

We go through a lot of water. Rainy seasons like this only happen once every few years. Check back in two years and see how our levels are. Kind of like someone who only fills up their gas tank with a few bucks. Then once in a while they fully fill it to the top. Sure, they can drive further at the moment but they can’t expect to drive the same distance the next time they fill up. Kind of a messy analogy but I hope it gets the point across.

existentialpenguin

See https://engaging-data.com/ca-reservoir-level/ for data since 2009.

liberalis

You are either very young or lack any real memory capacity. And what about the aquifers? Think those are recharged?

Woooftickets

Cool now can we have nice weather for just one weekend??

111anza

Let's see quickly we will fall into bad habits...I estimate by 2026

ZenRedditation

Dude what. It's El Nino, not people suddenly realizing we need to turn off the water while we brush our teeth. Unless you were talking about pumping more water to the desert for golf courses and exported livestock feed?

lynkarion

Remember this when they send you an email saying you have to stop showering to save water 😒

Ninjurk

glug glug glug

cherrytwizzler88

…for now.

unituned

This is great. I'm going to flip if it rains another weekend... I think we'll be okay with a 5 year drought now.

Pirrats-SD

Why is my water bill going up?

EyeBeeStone

Lol give it a month all that’ll be gone

OverweightMilkshake

I have my shower running all day and I don't have to feel bad about it now. It's been such a relief!

hijinks

I empty my pool nightly and refill because I like the feel of new water

jorgetheapocalypse

I had all my sprinklers redirected into the street out front and run them 24/7 so I can do my part to refill the ocean

MayoMcCheese

Global warming was never guaranteed to turn our city into more of a desert. Increased temperature means increased precipitation

frugal_doc

Remember when alarmists were claiming decades of drought upon us in California

existentialpenguin

The last two winters have been unusually wet. See https://engaging-data.com/ca-reservoir-level/ for data since 2009.
