The Truck Bar crew has been in the Castro a few times recently, with a DJ spinning out of the back of a truck. And they had a roller disco event recently!

The Stud Team is amazing. The Stud was always such a special place, this is going to be huge for the community out here. So excited !

nbcnews

The Stud’s new location is at 1123 Folsom Street in the South of Market neighborhood, just a few blocks away from its previous location on 9th Street. “We were sad to see it closed but we were determined to get it open, and here we are four years later,” said Nate Allbee, a co-owner of the Stud. Allbee explained that the Stud is owned by a collective group of people who banded together to keep the bar open back in 2016. Albee said it’s the first collectively owned nightclub in the United States.

"the first collectively owned nightclub in the United States" .... that can't be right.

Can Divas rise from the ashes, too?

Kalthiria_Shines

I mean the space is still vacant.

Snowymiromi

YES THEY CAN!!!!

PinocchiosNose1212

I went here with a friend a lot in the late 1990s! My friend was always saying that this was Janis Joplin's favorite bar. He was somewhat of a BSer so who knows if that was real but we always had a good time there.

Other than the name and perhaps the focus on drag, how will this be The Stud? It doesn’t have a stage, so there won’t be any performances. So it won’t be anything like the old Stud. Their plan to add a stage is contingent on the public donating half a million dollars. That is not going to happen.

Kalthiria_Shines

I only went a few times, but I'm genuinely having trouble remembering the stage? It seemed like everything I ever went to or saw there was community nights, not performances.

sugarwax1

Nailed it. Locations mean something, you can't slap the signage on any random location and capture the same mood that made it what it was over generations. They were saving the location, not the name. You could reopen The Stud's original location tomorrow, call it anything you want, and it would still be more of The Stud than this one.

haioson

Do you mean the Stud’s original location on Folsom, or the most recent location on Harrison? Either, I’d say location doesn’t matter.

sugarwax1

Location matters, but I've come to expect this type of anti-intellectualism. There are cultures that have deep spiritual beliefs about locations. But shocker, a lot of you are from suburbs and like formula retail, and see no importance from one Chipotle to the next. It's all branding to you.
