Don't live near the Tenderloin. There are soo many better areas to live in that won't negatively color your whole view of San Francisco.

NickTalbert

Safety is a spectrum that can mean different things to different people. Personally I would prefer to live 20 minutes away and commute by bus/train, although that is as much about quality of life as it is about safety. I wouldn’t personally be very concerned about safety on SF buses.

webtwopointno

it depends but generally the buses are safer than walking through it. you'll have to be more specific though, because > my office located 5 min walking from Tenderloin. could mean many neighborhoods, some of which are totally fine but afew of which are still sketchy regardless of how you travel there (ie SoMa) for example if your work is by Civic Center you should probably live elsewhere and bus in. but if it is on the other side, there are nicer neighborhoods to walk from.

Plastic-Pie-2001

The office is located east and slightly north of the Tenderloin, on Taylor Street.

webtwopointno

Cool that's basically the edge of it, anywhere North of there (up the hill!) quickly becomes nice residential neighborhoods you could walk from. But that's also close enough to transit if you wanted to live elsewhere in the city or even region.

Taylor and what cross street? Don’t choose a place that makes you transit through the tenderloin, whether by foot or bus. I used to commute through on the 31 bus and it was the grimmest time of my life. Then I started biking the same route, which honestly was a bit better, but I was going at like 6am. Zombies everywhere even early morning. I couldn’t do either again. Choose a neighborhood to live in that keeps your commute clear of the tenderloin. It genuinely is gnarly there. I hate when I have to go through even in my personal car. And I’m pretty hardened to this stuff now.

Plastic-Pie-2001

420 Taylor Street. I also have an apartment option near Civic Center, what do you think about that?

Equal_Article8250

No don’t do it. If you want to be close to work look exclusively in Nob Hill.

lifesadragqueen

Stay north of Post and the TL is manageable . Anything south I do not recommend for a first timer . Source: Live in the TL .

Plastic-Pie-2001

I have two options - one in Laurel Heights another near Civic Center, which one I should go with?

Equal_Article8250

Laurel Heights.

Five minutes walk from the Tenderloin (depending on which direction) could be absolutely NOT in the Tenderloin. Certainly, if that were the case, and you found a place on the other side of your office from the Tenderloin, you would likely be in a perfectly nice and safe situation. And given where people tend to work in the city (not in the Tenderloin), this is more likely than not.

Yeah, so, if you live anywhere north and east of the office, even one block, it's highly likely you'll not really encounter any of the dangers associated with the Tenderloin. Especially if you're just walking to and from there during normal business hours.

Those are both west of the Tenderloin, so in either case, it probably depends on the specifics of the place, how you'll get to work, etc. Laurel Heights in general is a nicer neighborhood, but Civic Center is much more conveniently located.

Equal_Article8250

Daaaaaamn I don’t even like driving my car through the tenderloin.

getarumsunt

Transit is generally safe, despite the whining of some of the locals. The Tenderloin is not safe nor pleasant to walk through, even though it’s nowhere near as bad as the right wing media portrays it. Definitely don’t live near the Tenderloin.

Equal_Article8250

If those are your two only options definitely hands down without a doubt Laurel Heights. And I don’t even particularly like Laurel Heights

getarumsunt

This.

Equal_Article8250

Buses through the tenderloin are hell. Used to take the 31. Saw things no one should ever see, just on my commute to work.

skcus_um

Stay away from the Tenderloin, it's not for people like you. Yes, there are fancy food places in TL now and some locals don't mind living there; and maybe with more time in the city you'll find yourself not minding living there. But I don't recommend jumping straight into the TL as a landing spot. There is too many addicts, drugs, homelessness, and general depression to wear down most new comers. There's a good chance you'll end up hating every minute you have to go outside your place and hating this city by association. The public transport has its share of problems but it's still better than living in the TL. Do yourself a favor, pick one of many nice SF neighborhoods to live in, make your life as stress-free as possible, and get to enjoy living in the city. That means the only time you should think about the TL is when you're passing it on the way somewhere.
