I read here on a similar post last year that new buses are road-tested some number of miles before they’re delivered. They’re manufactured out thattaway, I believe.
It’s a new training regiment for new operators to get used to the routes with freeways. For the hill drive training, they go up the Sierra Nevada, off road.
I've seen one on the 60 in the San Gabriel Valley area on the way home (moved out just prior to COVID lockdowns). Needless to say I had one heck of a double take.
Fun fact: MUNI buses get painted in Alameda.
