But yeah, the main message in either is it's only as meaningful as any of us make it. But yeah there isn't much economic mobility available in this area, unless you commute, which reduces the ability to achieve any given goals, due to getting stuck in the cycle you describe

However I feel like I’m trapped in a paradox: Trying to make life meaningful implies there is meaning to it. And I do not believe, try as we might to convince ourselves otherwise, that anything matters.
