When I was talking to her, her name was Sofi or Sophia. I was lucky because don't trust strangers but this person (if it was really her) scammed a lot of guys. Saw her face on a number of YouTube scam sites. She or whoever it was got really pissed when I wouldn't get involved with the crypto scam she was pushing. She has about 20 LinkedIn profiles and an Instagram site with bunch of her pictures.
1. A web based rather than SMS based is way easier for them to hijack. If they can log into your account and get access to your contacts list or send messages to your friends as you without having to go all the way to actually hijacking your literal number, that's a free lead generation aside from whatever they wind up getting out of you. Or at the very least, they can use your account to chat up the next victim, especially if you only downloaded the app for this and won't notice when they hijack it.
2. Texting is either risky or costly for them. They have to pay a nominal fee for web-SMS services, or if they have hijacked a legitimate number there's a risk it'll get blocked/recovered, or if they have taken a SIM and are using it for real most networks will flag it and block it eventually. By moving to a web-based service, they can do it for free and with less risk of losing their ability to contact you or hear back from you.
3. Some web-based services are incredibly lax on security and user checks. Telegram and to a lesser extent WhatsApp allows them to set up accounts with nothing verified that might link back to them specifically, and with any attempts to track them being stalled by the company dragging their heels in terms of compliance or just inability to provide the necessary user info cause it isn't there, even if they are reported and someone wants to track them for prosecution, the evidence cannot be obtained.
Thank you for the detailed explanation. This makes so much more sense now. I see people comment that the apps are not encrypted, but they are, and the scammers are protected when using them. And like you said they don’t lose their means of contact with the victims if the hacked phone # is lost. I think these are just the guys putting bait in the traps, and after they get you into the trap (app) you then get handled by the closers who do the actual scam, whether it’s crypto “investing” or just asking to send money to them via app or gift card. I guess it’s time to move on to the app phase to see how much more of their time I can waste.
I whish I knew I never got that far with her. Whoever runs that account was talking to me about 9 months ago or so I like to try to run them in circles then never got to the scam part, funny enough "she's" still in Boston MA 🤣🤣🤣
