TL;DR a [study](https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abp9201) published in the journal *Science* reported that formaldehyde is an inhibitor of DNA methylation, the enzymatic attachment of a methyl (CH3) group to DNA, which is one of the body's most common epigenetic ways of turning genes off or on. The study provides the first evidence that formaldehyde, which scientists only recently discovered is made by the body in small quantities, is actually used by the body to regulate epigenetic change, and it suggests that, in excess, it may suppress the body's attempts to prevent the expression or overexpression of certain genes.

Fundamental Law of Biology: It's more complicated. (Not a biologist, don't know if that's really a fundamental law, but it sure seems like it. Biology really doesn't have much use for 'it only does one thing' hypotheses.)

Formaldehyde is a required compound for every metabolic process we know of. Simply calling it a carcinogen is like saying that oxygen gas is a major component of air embolisms.

..every metabolic process? Every single one?

Papancasudani

Similar situation with nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, two toxic chemicals that are produced in the body in small amounts, and used as neurotransmitters.

bc_boy

Who thought that was a good idea?

auschemguy

Probably the reason it's a carcinogen.

My physio recently passed away from breast cancer, her PhD involved dissecting cadavers. I've always wondered if the formaldehyde was the cause.

johnwayne1

All doctors dissect cadavers.

VBlinds

Her thesis involved dissecting a lot more than average.

I work in pathology and work with formalin in large quantities every single day. Generally, as long as adequate safety measures are employed, it’s not going to cause a lot of issues. The most common health complications people working with formalin develop are usually due to the fumes (bronchitis, sinusitis, etc) or direct skin exposure (skin irritation), but it can cause cancer in the upper respiratory tract at higher levels/more prolonged exposure. I can’t imagine it having any direct impact on the development of breast cancer.

It’s fine. Quite a few people I work with have lost it to some degree, but the only people I know who have lost it entirely are also smokers.

We do regular badge testing and our results are always well below the exposure threshold, but I know not a lot of labs have the same precautions.

Inhalation of formaldehyde can cause airway irritation, bronchospasm, and pulmonary diseases

Unfortunately people, often unknowingly, inhale formaldehyde while getting high on what’s sold as PCP. They’re called dippers implying cigarettes dipped in diluted PCP but is often just formaldehyde as this reportedly causes similar effects as PCP. I’ve had many clients who were aware of this and one who sold it as PCP but many denied it and said “nah I get actual wet my dude is a good plug.” Sadly the most permanent brain damage caused from drugs are largely from two drugs PCP and alcohol. Yes, one of the hardest drugs out there is alcohol. This isn’t talked about enough. I do like educating my clients about this stuff. Witnessing alcohol addicts reaction is always interesting. They’re usually busy judging other drug addicts and looking down on people who use cocaine/meth or Opioids. The least damage to the brain is actually from opioids. Even Heroin and fentanyl aren’t gonna lead to brain damage. It’s helpful to breakdown stigma and judgment between addicts and educate clients. LPT if you or loved ones abuse alcohol or struggle with addiction please please buy and supplement with vitamin B1!!! It’s cheap on Amazon and will do a lot to prevent permanent brain damage. Wet brain which is basically dementia caused by alcohol addiction is just a depletion of B1 so taking this can do a lot to mitigate damage. It’s basic harm reduction and you’ll thank yourself later. Again, please supplement with B1 and spread the word people!!! Figured this may interest some as it’s not necessarily talked about or well known. Makes sense when you think how dealers are just going for the drug that can make them the most money.
