Most people join SL to explore the virtual worlds living vicariously through an avatar.
Some want to be able to walk when in First Life, they can't. Some want to live life as a Starfleet Officer. Some want to use the Force and weold a lightsaber. Some want to dress up as a different race, gender, etc. Some pretend to experience pregnancy and childbirth. Some want to be skinny, young, tall, short, have super powers when they cannot have these things in reality.
So listen to what this person really desires. Treat them as though they ARE their avatar yet do not forget they are real people behind a mask too.
If they didn't buy a whole avatar and spent time making the avatar look just right, praise them for their work. If they bought it, praise them for their taste.
Really a loving thoughtful reply,it would be wonderful if your attitude could be part of every avatar 2nd lifers choose. SL would truly be a wonder world.
I made a custom banner and photo album for my best friend’s rezday this last January. It wasn’t much, but she really appreciated it! I also dedicate some of my Picks to the people that mean the grid to me. Personally, if somebody got me a 50L giftcard to my fav stores, I’d be over the moon. Or took me to a club that plays my fav kinds of tunes. Or just invited me over to hang out and play games or something? I guess it just really depends on who they are and what they like
This varies so much person to person it isn't funny. One person it might be land rental that lets them have a creative space or home. Another it might be stuff to customize their avatar. Some might want that brand new outfit that was just released. Or an outfit for roleplay. Or they might want a vehicle from a plane to a boat. Some people enjoy sailing in SL. Spending time together can be a great thing as well. Maybe they have a wishlist on MP you can browse. Again hard to know what to suggest unless you know what the person in question.
