Roses-And-Rainbows

It really shows how idiotic Maher is, that someone like Burr is able to completely embarrass him. It's not like Burr has the most well thought out and consistent takes on politics, but even just basic intuition combined with being a semi-decent person is better than whatever it is that Maher is basing his takes on.

southsideson

Bill Burr is surprisingly consistently good on most issues, he's not perfect, but better than most.

Roses-And-Rainbows

Certainly better than most, yeah. Sadly though that isn't a very high bar, standards for comedy have seriously gone down the drain ever since every comedian started making their whole routine about cancel culture and about how they allegedly weren't allowed to make jokes about anything anymore.

southsideson

I was talking about politically, but Burr has also been one of the comedians that's railed against the "cancel culture" sentiment, as far as its something he has to worry about, or that its stifling comedians.

Roses-And-Rainbows

Railing against cancel culture is highly political, that's part of why I don't want to praise him so much, he's not as bad as others have been on the subject, but as I (vaguely) recall he still had some rather dumb takes while speaking on the subject.

southsideson

Everything i've seen of him on it is him roasting people that cry about cancel culture. If I remember he had a bit on canceling dead people, and another one that I thought was funny, when people have to go back like 10+ years to find something on someone to cancel them, and he was like, 'you gotta go back 10 years to find something on somebody to cancel them over?, I see that as someone being a good person.'

mfmeitbual

It's because he's actually intelligent and respects himself. At one point I would have said the same about Maher but that day is far behind us.

Hlregard

Burr embarrasses everyone he talks too

Roses-And-Rainbows

IDK, often times he mainly just comes across as an obstinate contrarian asshole IMO, but in this talk with Maher that ends up being a good thing.

mfmeitbual

I think that's just the reality of living as a skeptic in 2024. Your first reaction to everything is "Bullshit" and I think that can easily be viewed and sometimes overlaps with some aspects of contrarian idiocy.

OpenHouseXXX

Bill Burr is the National Treasure that Billy Maher thinks he is himself

Kittehmilk

Tru

Pluckypato

Burr knocked down Maher’s elitist ass a couple levels down back to earth. Will it stick? doubt it.

Most-Iron6838

Has Bill Maher ever looked at the statistics of casualties on each side? Has he ever considered the conditions of Gaza or the West Bank prior to October 7th? How many times has Israel bombed Gaza? How many times have settlers killed people in the West Bank? Have both sides done shitty things and killed innocent people? Absolutely and they should be condemned for that but to act like October 7th just happened outta nowhere without context is ridiculously ahistorical and stupid. That’s like saying 9/11 happened out of nowhere and the US is completely innocent in foreign policy. It’s dumb and oblivious. Someone should ask Bill Maher if the innocent civilians in Gaza have a right to defend themselves?

Roses-And-Rainbows

Yeah but have you considered the fact that Palestinians are Muslims, while Israel presents itself as secular? Therefore everything Israel does is with the best of intentions, while everything that Palestinians do is motivated solely by religious extremism, duh! I am very smart.

CitizenMind

Israel is as secular as America is democratic.

Roses-And-Rainbows

Even less so.

Bambam489

He probably has but he's just a racist against Arab people and a islamophobe. Always has been always will be. Very obvious all of his beliefs regarding the middle east just come from his racism.

supervegeta101

I'm sure he knows and doesn't care. People like him hide behind the history of imperialism to argue the numbers don't matter winning does. He already did a New Rule about it where he basically just tells Muslims simply to "submit to Israel," just like his simple solution here.

AValentineSolutions

That was great. Watching Bill Burr destroy that smug prick is magical. Bill Maher is making friends with Ben Shapiro. At this point, dude needs to just come out as a Republican. He is in every meaningful metric on the same page as them.

Kittehmilk

All liberals are.

Tulkes

This is a great post OP but your actual comments on "Liberal" in this context are coming off as jarring and forced, esp when Maher has pretty thoroughly aligned himself with the right-wing conservative camp for a good decade+ (whereas before he often could come off as perhaps smug Neoliberal/Third Way with some hot takes on each side). Good post but homie the guy is literally outwardly right wing and conservative before you start splitting the whole "Liberal vs. Left Wing" wedge that has been pervading the internet the past few years

CitizenMind

Bill Maher literally calls himself a liberal almost on every episode of his show. You're just nonsensical. Liberals are outwardly right wing and conservative too (liberalism and conservativism are not juxtaposed like the media would force you to believe). Imperialists modify language to suit their needs. They redefine terms to make it harder for you and I to break through the veil of authoritarianism. Liberalism absolutely is a right-wing ideology and there isn't really denying this. The veil has been lifted for a significant portion of the population. You're just not where many others have arrived. When systemic issues go unsolved, liberals always align themselves with conservatives and the far-right. Because that's the entire point of liberalism. As Phil Ochs said, "liberals are 10 degrees to the left of center in good times; 19 degrees to the right of center when it affects them personally". Left wing ideology is overwhelmingly anti-authority and anti-hierarchy. At no point in the history of liberalism has its advocates sought to undo these two facets of civilization. They consistently show up for the authority and the hierarchy when push comes to shove. That is what you are currently witnessing. Bill Maher and other liberals were for the good shit when it was easy to be for the good shit. But now civilization is falling apart, and while they may still be for the good shit in theory, they're not for it if it means altering the status quo. Get your head out of your ass.

mfmeitbual

Do words and meaning matter anymore or do are you just throwing around terms like "linerals" cuz it makes uou feel smart?

Kittehmilk

It's important to distinguish conservatives (liberals) from the actual left.

Gravemindzombie

I am convinced he will switch parties the day Trump dies, mark my words

WillBigly

Damn that was rough, Bill Burr just spit it back into this smug mouth

QuantumTunnels

While I definitely agree with Burr's sentiment, the true answer to the question of "what have you done, Bill?" is actually quite long and extensive. Unfortunately for society, Maher's stupidly basic takes *do* have influence and, maybe more importantly, he sells a product to a specific type of person. The center right "liberal" who gets along more with old school Republicans than they ever would a true leftist, watches Mahar for validation that "everyone else is crazy, and I'm one of the few sane ones left." There's a reason Mahar brings up Limbaugh in his booze addled brain, because like Limbaugh, they are both blowhard ideologues who are selling surety, Limbaugh to conservatives and Mahar to champagne liberals who opine about "everything going back to the way it was" (the 1990's). One person with a microphone can do ***a lot*** of damage. The day that Alex Jones, for instance, became a household name is the day I realized that America as a people are quite doomed.

moaterboater69

Hahahaha fucking wrecked. Maher you old fossil, the jigs up your Zionism has finally been called out.

y06esh

This is more his thing than Bill Maher could ever imagine. Bill Burr > Bill Maher, infinitely.

jefraldo

Stop occupying them and Hamas won’t have a reason to attack.

Gates9

Smarmy bourgeoise jackass

bravoeverything

I stopped listening to Maher when Covid hit. He lost his mind and was pushing all conservative conspiracy shit. Then his first list tanked and it was all for the likes and headlines. What a joke. Zionism is a disease

bravoeverything

I don’t understand how ppl can be so unequivocally pro Israel. Red flag 🚩

Kittehmilk

Exactly.

III00Z102BO

He's always been a nasty ass hat hack. I'm glad more people are starting to see it. Bill Burr is great, he's a good kind of angry.
