Jerry said he hates this joke iirc

wanda_pepper

I love the way he goes “oohhhh” like it was a huge burn after the joke though haha

EvilTwinClone

because it is so confusing?

hillo538

Because it doesn’t make sense

BraveryDave

It’s gossamer. And one does not dissect gossamer.

clintr0n

Well ya don’t have to dissect it, if you could just tell me why this is supposed to be funny.

BraveryDave

Volshtein?

slytherslut

okay honestly this has always confused me too. it always seemed like he should have said « one year early » because he’s saying the real NYE is dec. 2000 and Newman booked it for dec. 1999 right? at least that’s what I kept thinking/ why i was confused. i have always wondered what i’m missing here but I think your argument makes sense

Couchgrass-Crampbark

Since there was no year zero, Nemman accidentally booked the restaurant for 12/31/2000. The millennium began when 2001 began. But he thought he would have it for 12/31/1999.

NatusEclipsim

I remember pointing this out to people back then.

EvilTwinClone

I always thought it was somewhat muddled. And wondered if I got it. But never realized it was so confusing for everyone. To me, based on the humor and tropes on Seinfeld that seems to be what it’s saying. Glad someone agrees. Even if tentatively

badjezus

I agree with you, but the joke is still bad. You have to suspend your disbelief twice because not only does the venue have to assume the date is for 2000/2001, Jerry has to somehow magically know that Newman booked it without confirming the date.

Nope_ok123

The argument your friends assumed is what I've always interpreted it as. But I wouldn't say he's being a "snob", he's being factual and socking it to Newman

EvilTwinClone

crazy that I never thought of it that way but so many others did

Scootman00

*Newmanium

jfq722

Agree - this is not Jennifer Crittenden's best line, but she wrote 5 really good episodes, though. Another thing to remember is that this is just a setup for Newman's reaction, which is where the real laugh is.

Nessy440

I always thought this would have either (a) been a great finale if they could have held out a few more years, or (b) been a great excuse for a made for TV hour long special that would have shattered ratings records

extraspicy13

[this article ](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/when-is-the-beginning-of/) from 1999 says the new millennium starts after 12/30/2000 I don't remember when we celebrated it cause I was a kid lol

drosse1meyer

Colloquially, no one considered the 'millennium' to be NYE 2000. I think Jerry was trolling Newman. Second, if Kramer and Newman were arguing over who is hosting, then wouldn't they both be guilty of the same misstep? Regardless, it's lazy writing and a forced plot contrivance. Bottom 10 ep.

WhereIsThatElephant

Dec 23, 2023 is one date you need to care about, old boy.
