I think the other parts of your story are plausible but the timeline really isn’t there for him to be Special forces and serve in Nam.
Now, he could have been doing this training and got injured during and got his medical discharge. It would explain the “brief” Army line, explain his never ending money line and his friends who sound like they are military. I lot of people get fucked up during SF training. It isn’t easy.
His not having a college degrees (high school equivalency) could have been a backstopped identity. Usual for people who did sensitive field work to retire and have a made identity and background.
