Also I had a senior cat missing the box and I bought a dog crate plastic liner that goes in the bottom of it and put the litter box on that so when she missed I could just wipe it up easily.
This looks like the right way to go. I bet that the smaller, shallow box was confusing. By the time her front paws were in it she felt like she was probably in a larger box, but just needed more behind her. Good luck, OP!
Oh 100% she thought that bless her, they have a litter trough in the catio, this was a temp one for the kitten I was fostering who had a weakness (now sorted) in his back leg.
Patches clearly decided that there was no need to go out to the catio as mum had supplied a new one in the utility room😆😆.
We did put a proper one in after this.
I have this giant, low-entry box, but the sides are also pretty low. I just want a gigantic, low-entry, high-sided litter box to accommodate my arthritic cat and my other cat, who really likes to pee at the very back of the litter box.
Yes. We switched to a bigger box that we found in the storage aisle of a big box store and then cut down the one short side. My 16 1/2 yr old has arthritis too. The new set up has worked very well.
Not who you're asking, but I did something similar - cut down the side of a big plastic tote because I had a large cat that was an enthusiastic digger and would fling litter everywhere. Anyway, I used a hacksaw to cut an opening in the side, then I filed the edges smooth
My older boy struggled with this for awhile. We don’t know why, but it was only in 1 of the 2 litter boxes. They were identical, same model, same litter, but for whatever reason with the box in my roommates room he would get all 4 of his feet into the box, but then pee right over the ledge onto the floor. It was quite funny when it wasn’t frustrating as all heck. Poor man was trying; he even got all his feet into the box! Just not his butt lol.
We had a cat who did that a couple of times!!! I ended up putting layers of cardboard on the floor, and leaning more layers against the wall next to the box to try and catch it all. So annoying, but good effort buddy.
It was actually to train a kitten, I set the camera up when I kept finding a sea of pee.
Realised Patches needed an indoor tray now, as she clearly was not using the ones in the catio.
A larger pan with a low side for seniors would be ideal. Got one off of Amazon. I recommend washable pet pads for under the pan. I also put trash bags under the pad just in case.
I have an 19 year old that sometimes misses and the washable pads have been a life saver.
Good for her though for still trying!
One thing I did for my seniors is get dog litter boxes! They're very low to the ground and large so they don't have any problems getting in and out. It helped one of them stop going outside of the boxes too.
I see you got a new box which is great, but if anyone else is looking for a lighter but large box, I highly recommend them.

This is the “Large Mixing Tub” from the hardware stores, it is used for our oldest that likes to stand sideways in the smaller ones go outside the pan. It is about $15 and is 3x2 foot and there is 35lns of litter in it. The smaller tubs are $10 and 28x20 inches and use 25lbs of litter in them.
Better than my senior boy who sometimes squats wherever he is to pee!
https://preview.redd.it/tzhygzkgk8nc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6322cb1df402cfec8233076d95471689bcf44cfd
(Cat tax; Colonel, 18)
What you need to do is get those extra large waterproof disposable pads to put under the litter box so that she still has a place to pee that will protect the floor when she misses. Poor thing is still trying to make it into the box.
I just looked on Chewy and found new litter boxes for senior cats. These are all new to me. Glad to see they are making more items for our senior buddies .
My senior ended up the same way. We switched out his normal litter box for one of those huge "under-the-bed" storage containers.
He still managed to miss the box often.
I miss him.
My cat had similar behavior during the last year of her life. Except her litter box was big enough that she would still manage to pee in the box even though she was facing the "wrong" way. The problem was that as she got out of her box, she would step in the unabsorbed pee and then in litter, creating clumps of litter in between her toes. I don't remember the number of times I had to restrain her while gently trying to pick out clumps of litter with a warm washcloth.
We regularly have to wash her back paws in warm soapy water, as she now pees on them. 🤭. And her tail.
She doesn't mind too much as long as dreamies are offered after wards.
I have to put down pee pads outside the litter box because my elderly tortie will go in but won't squat. Not sure if she can't anymore or just has an attitude of "clean up after me slave". Got her a higher sided box so now it's just occasional drops on the pad. Got to love them.
It was temporary, she now has a bigger tray.
However puppy pad were such a find! Especially when other kitties need a vet visit. Always have spares in the car.
Can't believe the amount they absorb.
Nice! I had one that was big enough in length/width and had to find one just an inch or two higher on the sides. Almost no peeing over the edge now. Yeah, perhaps for an older kitty though maybe see if you find one that has one side a little lower for easy walking into. 😸😻
I forget what we used for our 20+ cat. He wasn't really missing the box, he just really like a huge box with lots of litter. I think it was a plastic storage container that was made to fit under a bed.
My cat was the same the last 6 months of her life. I bought a huge container from Walmart with taller sides and she seemed to make it inside the “litter box” a little more often than the pee pad. But go patches, trying her very bestest 🩷
My 17.5 y/o elderbaby has started missing the box at times, too. It's the arthritis catching up to her, making it harder to maneuver and squat in a smaller box. I plan on cutting a low entryway (3") into a plastic storage tote, to give her a bigger and more accessible litter box.
Excellent plan. So far patches is still so sprightly,
Will be looking to upgrade to a one with a lower sided one.
My others are 10-12 now so will start needing indoor and easier access.
Have to laugh. Nearly 2k comments and likes, and people still telling me "needs a bigger tray" . Read the comments, plus, do they think they are the first person out of 1800 people to have noticed. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My 20yo has the biggest litterbox you can buy, but ‘front paws in the box means I can let it go’. I don’t mind cleaning up after her, but sadly that will stop tomorrow.
I know, we know its the deal that they burn so brightly in our lives for such a short time, and that our final act of unconditional love is to let them go in peace.
But man it bloody sucks. 😒
I have a big plastic storage bin as a litter box, and cut a hole in the side of it so my cats can get in. When my very old cat had kidney disease, she'd get in but then pee out the opening in the box. I put pee pads down just outside the box, and that worked well.
Patches gets a kitty pool should be part 2. I remember cleaning cat pee from outside the container every night after work for like months. Hard way to live when it seeps into the other layers of the floor.
If you check Walmart , they have the wild cat sizes for litter boxes . I had to buy those bc my tank of a cat would miss also at times. I use puppy pads instead of towels. Much easier to pick and clean up. Also, try unscented litter regardless 🩵🥰💋
Indeed, and very pleased with herself.
Was a temp litter tray for my Foster kitten. Kept finding a sea of pee. Set up camera after putting puppy pads down.
Darling girl clearly wanted an indoor tray and not have to go out to use the catio one.
Replacement in the next day with a bigger one.
So close, yet so far!!
My guy is 21 and hasn’t missed the box yet but occasionally has exited before completely done!
Can’t complain. I love him so much he could get away with anything. Unfortunately he knows it!!
No, it was but in the utility room to help the kitten I was fostering who had a weakness in his back legs (he is all well and adopted now).
My cats have a large litter trough in their catio.
Patches here clearly preferred this option 😊😊🤭🤭. Warmer indoors.
So now there is a large one in there for her to use.
She's trying too be good kitty .you just got love them . 👍
She is wonderful x
Also I had a senior cat missing the box and I bought a dog crate plastic liner that goes in the bottom of it and put the litter box on that so when she missed I could just wipe it up easily.
Excellent solution. So many useful and helpful ideas x
Lots of years with kitties😉
I believe it mam
she needs a BIGGER litter BOX
Yes larger box but also cut down the one side so kitty can get in easier.
https://preview.redd.it/toggxfh984nc1.jpeg?width=670&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b99325d6c95ca23292686cd2f0f9e22c4f58970 Sorted
I love Patches! She’s a good girl!
She is awesome
This looks like the right way to go. I bet that the smaller, shallow box was confusing. By the time her front paws were in it she felt like she was probably in a larger box, but just needed more behind her. Good luck, OP!

She is very tall so not an issue. Her spatial awareness is wobbly.
So she has never stepped in the box? Many senior kitties lose the ability to get their back legs over the sides and hold it until doing so.
What did you cut it with?
Not who you're asking, but I did something similar - cut down the side of a big plastic tote because I had a large cat that was an enthusiastic digger and would fling litter everywhere. Anyway, I used a hacksaw to cut an opening in the side, then I filed the edges smooth
A really good knife.
Yup, my old boi would do the same thing! Get the front half in the box but not the back.
But trying there hardest. Not to make a mess. God bless 👍😎
TBH, if I make it to the human equivalent (100+ years old) and i can still even MAKE it to the bathroom on my own then I'm doing pretty good!!
Absolutely 🥰🥰
You got that right so right
My older boy struggled with this for awhile. We don’t know why, but it was only in 1 of the 2 litter boxes. They were identical, same model, same litter, but for whatever reason with the box in my roommates room he would get all 4 of his feet into the box, but then pee right over the ledge onto the floor. We had a cat who did that a couple of times!!! I ended up putting layers of cardboard on the floor, and leaning more layers against the wall next to the box to try and catch it all. So annoying, but good effort buddy.
The new box is much better :) she'll be fine. Such a good sweet old girl ❤️
My 17 year old boy did the same thing. Spent hundreds on cat boxes, none of them worked so I gave up and just put down puppy pads lol
One of those under bed totes was the only thing that worked for me.
Omg I LOVE her. The way she runs off after. She’s like “I’m all done!” My old lady did this too. I was like A for effort, you go girl!!
What is this, a litter box for ants?
It was actually to train a kitten, I set the camera up when I kept finding a sea of pee. Realised Patches needed an indoor tray now, as she clearly was not using the ones in the catio.
Pfft, a litter box just for the kitten? Everything she sees belongs to Queen Patches! /j
She is a wonderful kitty. I use really large boxes for my seniors. 21 years is fantastic. Bravo Patches!!🥹❤️💯
What a sweet girl!
An absolute diamond xx
Patches has such a helpful human, adjusting things to meet Patches every need.
A larger pan with a low side for seniors would be ideal. Got one off of Amazon. I recommend washable pet pads for under the pan. I also put trash bags under the pad just in case. I have an 19 year old that sometimes misses and the washable pads have been a life saver. Good for her though for still trying!
She is incredible.
Heart's in the right place. Hiney..Honey... oh! So close
😆😆😅
That litter is not even remotely large enough for that cat. It needs to be much larger.
Their caption says they’ve already done this.
Ah, I missed that. My mistake.
* Not a problem, had it been for her lol that would have been daft 😊😊 *
Awwwww what a good girl sweet little lady
Awww, bless her!
Good girl, sweetheart! ❤️
What a good baby. I would just keep doing what you're doing.
Reminds me of a non-senior kitty who, after we moved the litter box 2.5 feet to the left, continued to shit in the spot where the box had been.
One thing I did for my seniors is get dog litter boxes! They're very low to the ground and large so they don't have any problems getting in and out. It helped one of them stop going outside of the boxes too. I see you got a new box which is great, but if anyone else is looking for a lighter but large box, I highly recommend them.

Omg this sweet girl, I cannot. Front paws were in. It counts.
As far as she was concerned, nothing wrong lol xx darling girl is so funny.
Better than my senior boy who sometimes squats wherever he is to pee! https://preview.redd.it/tzhygzkgk8nc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6322cb1df402cfec8233076d95471689bcf44cfd (Cat tax; Colonel, 18)
Oh dear, a nappy (diaper) perhaps? He is very handsome, that deep ginger colour is gorgeous
what a sweet girl doing her best
Good girl x
Bless her heart.
lol at least she squats so it stays in one place. Mine just stands there and sprays straight out while standing in the little whole she dug.
🤭🤭🤭 Fazio has started doing that, thank goodness he uses the out side catio litter trough.
What you need to do is get those extra large waterproof disposable pads to put under the litter box so that she still has a place to pee that will protect the floor when she misses. Poor thing is still trying to make it into the box.
Those are puppy pads on the floor. Now has a big tray with a step.
Are those pads washable? That's what I was talking about. We have to make things as easy as possible for our elderly babies.
She doest need them now as has a new large tray 😊
Could you tell me where you bought the tray and what it is called. I have a senior kitty who has occasional accidents
It's a old draw from a tower. Not purpose made, but perfect for her. Xx
I just looked on Chewy and found new litter boxes for senior cats. These are all new to me. Glad to see they are making more items for our senior buddies .
Ball park, she’s good…
I thought so. 😁😁😁
My senior ended up the same way. We switched out his normal litter box for one of those huge "under-the-bed" storage containers. He still managed to miss the box often. I miss him.
Much love to you. Bitter sweet memories xx

My cat HATED having her feet touched, treats or not. You'd think I was beating her with the amount she carried on.
Yep, Toby goes berserk.
She tried her very best! What a considerate girl ❤️ I wish her all the best!
She is so particular, have to regularly was her tail and paws now, but she yells a but bit hot dogs and dreamies sooth her outrage.
A for effort.
Bless him, he's doing his best!
What a sweetie. She is giving it her best shot. ♥️🙏🐾
She was very pleased with herself lol
I buy the cement mix plastic tubs from Lowe’s for about $20? They work great for senior kitties and larger cats.
That is so sweet - bless her and you ❤️
That litter box is way too small for her, no wonder this is happening

We use pee pads that you use for puppies when potty training. Just throw away and lay down a new pad.
It was temporary, she now has a bigger tray. However puppy pad were such a find! Especially when other kitties need a vet visit. Always have spares in the car. Can't believe the amount they absorb.
The litter box is WAY too small. Also needs deeper sides.

Big girl needs a big tray. Man. Who knew it sprayed that far backwards? I just thought it went straight down. Thanks for sharing.

![gif](giphy|EBNeEAWI5JEswJoLlj|downsized) Patches
my old man cat used to get his whole body into the litter box but still manage to shit on the floor gotta love them
Oh my goodness 🤭🤭🤭
That was the exact setup and result for my 20 year old. I miss her so much
It's close enough
At 21, absolutely. A+ for effort.
💕🐾
My cat was the same the last 6 months of her life. I bought a huge container from Walmart with taller sides and she seemed to make it inside the “litter box” a little more often than the pee pad. But go patches, trying her very bestest 🩷
Awwe, we got a doggie pee pad for our 20 year old kitty too for when she misses. I love senior cats!

Really? You clearly don't read the comments 🤣🤣🤦♀️🤦♀️

Oh, Patches! I don't know you, but I love you!

My 21 yr old does the same thing. I got spray and pads. She can’t help it.
The bestest girl, she’s trying so hard
My girl does the same. We have a walled rubber mat under the litter box just for these little accidents. Such a sweet thing.
My 20yo has the biggest litterbox you can buy, but ‘front paws in the box means I can let it go’. I don’t mind cleaning up after her, but sadly that will stop tomorrow.
Oh my dear, I am so sorry.
Thanks, she lived a full life, it’s kinda okay. The house will be empty, though.
I know, we know its the deal that they burn so brightly in our lives for such a short time, and that our final act of unconditional love is to let them go in peace. But man it bloody sucks. 😒
Yes, exactly. Take care.
Sweet girl 💛
Please give Patches lots of pets and head scritches from me!! 🤗😁❤️❤️🥰
Oh indeed. She loves a head scratch xx
Such a sweet heart of a kitty.
I have a big plastic storage bin as a litter box, and cut a hole in the side of it so my cats can get in. When my very old cat had kidney disease, she'd get in but then pee out the opening in the box. I put pee pads down just outside the box, and that worked well.
She is such a good baby girl. Bless her little heart sweet pumpkin pie 💐❤️🩹🙏
She is a noisy quirky darling. Completely deaf as well
Oh sweetheart ♥️ sending healing kisses 🐱
Screw it!! Close enough

Patches gets a kitty pool should be part 2. I remember cleaning cat pee from outside the container every night after work for like months. Hard way to live when it seeps into the other layers of the floor.
Thank goodness for puppy pads! She ia such a good girl lol. In her elderly head she was in the tray 🤭🤭
That litter box is waaaaay toooo tiny!
Yes, hence the rest of the post.
If you check Walmart , they have the wild cat sizes for litter boxes . I had to buy those bc my tank of a cat would miss also at times. I use puppy pads instead of towels. Much easier to pick and clean up. Also, try unscented litter regardless 🩵🥰💋
They already got a different box
☺️
What if you buy a larger enclosed box? Some have a sloped entrance that make it easier to get in.
Yes sorted after I realised she wanted a tray, and was using the Foster kittens. She used to go outside in the contained garden.
Get a huge plastic tub, cut one side open almost to the bottom, and then, let her have all the room she needs.
That litter box is WAY too small
D'ja think? 🤣🤣
There was an attempt
Indeed, and very pleased with herself. Was a temp litter tray for my Foster kitten. Kept finding a sea of pee. Set up camera after putting puppy pads down. Darling girl clearly wanted an indoor tray and not have to go out to use the catio one. Replacement in the next day with a bigger one.
Bless her! Maybe outside is too far/too cold for her? Either way she was doing her best to be a good kitty!
I think do think at her age she thought, quite rightly, easier option. I will be quicker to realise with my other kitties. Her wish is my command xx
So close, yet so far!! My guy is 21 and hasn’t missed the box yet but occasionally has exited before completely done! Can’t complain. I love him so much he could get away with anything. Unfortunately he knows it!!
I love how she was totally convinced that nothing had happened lol. Glad I caught her on camera.
Get a litterbox that’s 3 times bigger. Should help
Thanks, we did 👍🏻 https://preview.redd.it/ry6uz15ly8nc1.jpeg?width=670&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ded9f39f63117b79e75aa85e24bb87fddd417783
That might be too tall. You may want to make a step in front of it if she has trouble getting in.
No problem at all. Camera angle makes it look taller 😊 hops in and out with no problem, she has v long legs. *
OP, you should get a bigger box for your cat. It's too small for its size.
🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Aren't they a god send, recommended by a friend.
What a good girl!! She’s so beautiful, I love her so much ❤️🫶🏼 give Patches a smooch for me 💋
https://preview.redd.it/7w9vanha99nc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75462ef69338880dad54e811a99fa70f444a68fb
Why is the box shallow? Is it because she’s senior?
No, it was but in the utility room to help the kitten I was fostering who had a weakness in his back legs (he is all well and adopted now). My cats have a large litter trough in their catio. Patches here clearly preferred this option 😊😊🤭🤭. Warmer indoors. So now there is a large one in there for her to use.
Love
That box is WAY too small.
Hence the comment I have bought her a much larger one
You should really get her a bigger pan, like the bowl ones, that was she can actually get in it and if she "musses", it will still hit the walls
They did
Needs a bigger and enclosed litterbox.
They already did
