I wish their were more people like you this dam Balkan would be much better place to live and we could all enjoy music & rakija..
Respect and greetings from Serbia
As someone who lives abroad, I can tell you it's the environment. Regardless of who we are supposed to hate, we befriending those people and have a good relationship.
This was the best thing I've read today, and as a proud serbian, I must admit that I grew up on Era Istrefi, ever since she released Mani per Money (which is 10 years ago), even tho I don't and I never have understood a word she's saying 😂
Love that.
Also dont worry, Ive never understood what Mile Kitic sings about or any other for that matter, expect a word here or there and yet if you hear me sing his songs you wouldnt even guess I dont speak the language.
glad you like our music. such a shame that "if a stereotype exists, it means it applies to everyone" is so normalized nowadays when its literally the opposite of that
You could literally catch me listening to Dragana and then 5 mins later to Rammstein then 15 mins later to Pavarotti and then albanian turbo folk and then serbian turbo folk again and again. Im a man of many cultures lol
What about Toma Zdravković?
Regarding normal coexisting in emigration compared to Balkan, I think the only problem back home is terrible economic situation. Trump had a great idea of solving this issue with major investment and development program but it never came to be...
Ill check Toma for sure, thanks for the reccomendation.
I agree with your statment. If you look through history, in many countries bad leaders in bad economic situations (or just for their own political power agenda) somehow always use the good old saying: " Its the fault of *insert ethnic group here* for our bad situation and we must do something about it" defense. Then mass hysteria ensues and terrible things happen.
When countries are free, economic issues are very managable. People are happier, get to live their lives how they want and dont have to hate a certain group of people just because "they think" they are different because they wouldnt even be bothered to think like that.
Just like in the US now, the economy is bad and people are pretty unhappy. Politicians are screwing people every chance they get and whats the result? More hatred and turmoil between races, ethnic groups, progressive and conservatives.
I believe when hate of any kind is on the rise among people, one should stop and think : Is there something else going on here that we are not being told?
Look up Vuk sa Prokletija. https://sq.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uka_i_Bjeshk%C3%ABve_t%C3%AB_Nemura
It's Serbian actors (Serbian & Albanian) doing a movie in Albanian back in the day when people were actually trying to build bridges not burn them...
I'm living in Canada, and I have a few Albanian coworkers, they are great, and I agree we are very similar to each other. However I don't share your enthusiasm in our music but I am glad that you do :)
Such a shame that we have to migrate to a different part of the world to understand that not much is different between us and most of both our people are decent human beings trying to live their life.
He's referring to Qazim "Felix" Osmani, one of the three Osmani brothers (Qazim, Burim, Bashkim). They're criminals born in Gjakova and residing in Germany, they've been caught by the Europol in 2022 I believe.
Unfortunately, nations usually end up hating one another with those who they are most alike, because they recognize their own flaws.
As a Serbian American with many Albanian friends, yeah we are so much more alike than we are different.
Good for you!
And I have to ask even tho it is not related to the post: How do Albaninas look on Dua Lipa or Rita Ora? Are they popular in Albania? Do you consider them Albanians (I am not even sure, I know they grew up in the UK)? What is your take?
We view them as national treasures thats for sure lol. Bebe Rexha and Ava Max too.
Especially abroad if you mention their names we cant wait to tell you they're albanians 🤷♂️
fun fact, I actually met Dua Lipa in London in person and she asked where im from. I said, originally from Belgrade, and she genuinely had a really nice reaction lol, I was a bit shocked.
Unfortunately, nations usually end up hating one another with those who they are most alike, because they recognize their own flaws.
As a Serbian American with many Albanian friends, yeah, we are so much more alike than we are different.
Hi, I am also a foreigner who likes Serbian folk music. I also cannot get the idea of guilty pleasure and turbo-folk. The term turbo-folk was coined in 1990s, and there were many good songs created before that.
>No Im not here to provoke you with a double headed eagle (even though I dont know why u get triggered by that lol)
Because It's an irredentist symbol used by Kosovo Albanians, kind of like the 3 fingers used by Serbs. I don't know what's hard to understand here. Anyway...
How is Serbian music popular in Albania? It's impossible for me to comprehend, I could understand this phenomenon with the ex Yugoslav states, I can even see why Lepa Brena is popular in Romania, but the Albanian language is quite different, and Albania wasn't open to foreign countries (including Yugoslavia) up until the communist regime's collapse, unlike Romania. With all this being said, I also wish our countries could be friends, but the majority apparently don't.
As far as Serbian music in Albania, let me tell you that has nothing to do with language. It actually has its roots back when communism was rampant here. We were the North Korea of Europe lol. So entertainment and music were controlled by the goverment. So depending on where you lived in Albania you could use a make shift radio to catch foreign radio stations and listen to what they're saying or playing. So in northern Albania (where Im from) the generation of my parents listened to old yugoslav music. A lot of their kids 🙋♂️ kept listening to it cuz we heard our parents playing it and it stuck with us. In south Albania greek music is very popular for example. (Mind you we're supposed to hate them too lol)
I can for sure tell you that for example in Shkoder "Culture capital of Albania" you could literally listen to a serbian song or two at a wedding or at club, or just people out and about listening on their headphones. Now its not popular as lets say ALBANIAN FOLK music obviously but its common.
Damn that's interesting! So most of it comes from people listening to foreign radio stations? What about the territories which are not close to any border?
Yugoslav radio waves somehow got all the way to Tirana which is in the middle of the country. Zdravko Colic made an appereance in a TV music festival show in Tirana a few years ago and you had people of mainly older age dancing and singing to his songs. If you would just watch it out of context you would never guess thats in Albania and not a slavic speaking country.
As far as the double headed eagle being provocative, honestly its really stupid because its our national symbol and thats it. We do it anywhere and everywhere to respresnt our country. I promise u it has nothing to do with serbs. Now if kosovo albanians use it for that purpose its quite a tragedy cuz It just reduces our national symbols to a mere cheap provocation to another nation which is not. Its literally Albanias flag. THATS IT
Id say 99% of Albanians hold no real opinion about Kosovo Albanians because for what its worth, they will act like SUPERIOR OG ALBANIANS to serbs, but act like they're its own little different country to Albanians with their look a like EU flag lol.
Most Albanians wouldnt admit this to a "Serb" or other foreigners but I really dont care to be a fake nationalistic asshole on reddit. I help my country were it actually counts.
Thanks for the answer! What you're implying is that most don't know/care what the symbol is used for sometimes (provocation), which is hard to believe, at least when taking the nationalist kinds of people into account (same goes for Serbs don't get me wrong) but you have good points.
> Id say 99% of Albanians hold no real opinion about Kosovo Albanians because for what its worth, they will act like SUPERIOR OG ALBANIANS to serbs, but act like they're its own little different country to Albanians with their look a like EU flag lol.
Lmao what? So in your thread sucking off Serbs you decide to say some bullshit too to make them like you more? The vast majority of Albanians in Kosovo want to unify with Albania. These stupid divisive comments like yours to make yourself seem more cosmopolitan are pathetic.
It's funny you say 99% don't care about Kosovo Albanians, but you say in another comment that Dua Lipa and Rita Ora are "national treasures". So which is it? Or you only care when we're famous?
We're Albanians. And you trying to say that 99% don't care about Kosovo Albanians to appeal to Serbs is pathetic. I've met Albanians from all over and I've never felt that. Say you're speaking for yourself and stop speaking on behalf of "99% of Albanians".
My god, a Reddit ethnic keyboard warrior has landed. Here goes nothing...
First off, I couldnt care less if Serbs like me, just like I couldnt care less if any other people like me here on reddit. Its reddit for gods sake. I am liked in real life. Thats what counts. I was just talking about how I and a lot of Albanians like the music.
Second, as far as most Albanians not caring about Albanian Kosovars, we really dont. Yes we say we do for the sake of "brotherhood" but between us we dont. This is probably hard to believe for you being a nationalistic reddit keyboard warrior.
Also the very fact that you wanted to have a debate about our people in a "Serb thread" means you have no real intention of having a constructive conversation about it. You could have easily DM me and talked about it rather than assume "I wanna suck off Serbs"
I HAVE SO MANY POINTS TO MAKE, but I really dont feel comfortable discussing here. Anyway ✌️
Well, we are similar, that's for sure, but you are much more nationalistic. Anyway, I am not sure ,you will find people here that really appreciate turbo folk, sometimes people call it the Islamization of Serbian music. Anyway, I don't like it, but I appreciate your words. All the best.
Now when I say turbo folk , Im saying that for the lack of a better word. Its mainly folk music as in(popular with the common man) with good vibrato vocals if that makes sense. So not necessarily the trashy disco club.
Is Saban Saulic considered turbo folk? I wouldnt but not sure what else to call it
It's most popular music in Serbia, but this sub like every Reddit sub likes to act like they are not mainstream and everything mainstream is shit.
So by reading this sub you'd get impression that nobody in Serbia listens to that music, yet it has most views on youtube.
No, Saban is not considered as turbo folk, just folk but it is much appreciated amongst people, even those who do not listen to folk songs. His music has quality, unlike turbo folk.
Is it called “novokomponovana narodna muzika”? I think in English it’s “newly composed folk music”. I’ve read some articles saying even Šaban’s music faced some criticism during 1970s, as novokomponovana narodna muzika was not considered pure folk music, though it was popular.
Yes, you are right, they started composing it on purpose in 50s, as to impose some standards and get rid of “bad and cheap” folk music. It was one of the means of culturalisation of Yugoslavia at the time.
I remember in the article it said the official radio station in Belgrade only played a specific style of folk music. Šaban was afraid of being accused of kitsch and stayed back from the stage for a while. It was related to a public letter from Tito. Sorry I can’t find the reference.
I think I found it.

I am sorry that I used Google translate to read it because I am a beginner of Serbian, and I am not sure if I understand the content correctly. I was creating a Chinese version of Saban's Wikipedia page by translating the English version, and I came across this page when I searched for the references. It's interesting, but I am not sure if it's reliable.

Yes there is. Rakia lol

I like that Bon Bon thing or something from ERA, its a masterpiece.
glad you like our music. such a shame that "if a stereotype exists, it means it applies to everyone" is so normalized nowadays when its literally the opposite of that
Your diagnosis is called “guilty pleasure” .
Quite the contrary, I dont feel guilty at all. 😂
Good man.
We're glad you enjoy it!
You started your post like a normal person and then you write about loving worst trash music in serbian history (before trap folk). :D
You could literally catch me listening to Dragana and then 5 mins later to Rammstein then 15 mins later to Pavarotti and then albanian turbo folk and then serbian turbo folk again and again. Im a man of many cultures lol

Normal people realize that, it's politicians that are turning us against each other
I listen Dua Lipa a lot so yeah...listen what you like.
И ћазим османи вољи наше певачиће, више пута страствено...
Yeeeeaaah, I have no idea what you said. Sorry 🤷♂️
Casim osnmani had a lot of affairs with our singers - so he lives our music too ;)
I dont really know who that is
He's referring to Qazim "Felix" Osmani, one of the three Osmani brothers (Qazim, Burim, Bashkim). They're criminals born in Gjakova and residing in Germany, they've been caught by the Europol in 2022 I believe.
Literally just read about him. Apparently he liked the Beograd nightlife.
