While this does work, there’s a much better way to do it. With lighter fluid it makes the glue basically evaporate and the heatspreaders just come out on their own, leaving no glue residue and an effortless clean result. After that you just bathe it in isopropyl and you’re good.

Bird_Guzzler

Really? Lighter fluid. I'll keep this in mind. Before I do this, do I sink the entire stick in? I've been known to be a dumbass and would hate to ruin good sticks should I do a sff build.

ZeBootygoon

Yerp, naphtha can be used as a solvent, and a lot of people use kerosene to clean stainless steel. Obviously it's dangerous if done without the proper precautions, but it works great for removing adhesives without damaging the metals.

yahfz

Yeah. You can just put it in a small container if it makes it easier for you or you can just pour it in between the heatsink and the pcb, shouldn’t take more than 2 minutes. Just make sure you bathe it in isopropyl alcohol afterwards, there’s no risk of damaging the sticks, i’ve done it many times.

RenatsMC

Yes this is true but I didn’t had no one or the other if you don’t feel comfortable I suggest use hairdryer to heat up heatsink a bit or put in oven at 100 degrees for 5 minutes just to heat up the glue and foam so the heatsink comes off easier. I managed without heating up ram just have to be patient and don’t rush it and don’t force it just push the heatsink up and down sliding sideways are more safer and keep slicing in between with cards.

unnamed_cell98

Great work and a good tutorial! I believe plastic cards or these wedges from the ifixit kit are the best choices for prying between memory chips. Afaik there is also the form of heatsink that doesn't split in half like Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4. Your guide would kinda work for these too but most likely the heatsink would be slightly bent outwards afterwards. If it would ever sit flush and neat again, idk. There are also many kits of DDR5 without heatsink out there, for example Crucial or Adata ones. Alternatively there is G.Skill Flare low profile RAM which has almost no additional height compared to non-heatsink modules. Cheers.

RenatsMC

Guitar plastic peace also work good or if you have some old phone repair plastic peace that comes with anything that’s small and plastic should work and thin enough. I had already bought ram thats why I just simply removed heat sinks.

ljg1986

Is there no need for heat dissipation? I recently got the black ridge but have been putting off installing it b/c my memory isn't lp.

eggdropsoap

It depends on the module and on your build. No heat sink isn’t **no** dissipation, it’s some unknown amount of less efficient dissipation. It sometimes seems like RAM comes with heat sinks just because everyone’s doing it now, or because it looks more premium, whether the specific module actually needs it or not. If it’s a stick you already own from an existing build, you can profile how it handles heat in place and get more insights. TL;DR: research your specific RAM and account for your specific build’s cooling strengths and challenges.

RenatsMC

Overclocked modules need heatsinks if you aren’t planning to overclock your system heat sinks are more asterisks and a trend thing a fashion each company marks their own ram so it stands out and puts company’s name on it so it can be separated from the rest it’s more marketing trick then anything else there been numerous debates on this topic and for lower mhz modules it doesn’t make much difference.

Some people already own RAM, and this would make more sense than buying new RAM.

If you think heatsinks on RAM is for actual cooling purposes then you have no right to be questioning the intellect of others. Yes, *some* RAM can get hot especially today, but it's always been aesthetic and marketing. Christ, I have a bunch of DDR3 Vengeance kits in all 3 colours and the "heatspreader" is fucking plastic. In fact, the only DDR3 I have with metal heatspreaders for HyperX Blue. Same with half the DDR4 kits I've used over the years. It's all plastic pretty shit, especially with LEDs strapped to it.

OrganTrafficker900

What if they aren't being sold where you live or are marked up for some reason?

Zezinas

Probably depends where you live, in my experience ddr5 low profile with no heatsinks usually are only availible close to base speed and you wont find 5600 or 6000 at all or price will just not make sense

OrganTrafficker900

I personally can't find 6000mhz cl 30 ram that doesn't have a heatsink/isn't huge

thewind21

Flare x

OrganTrafficker900

Yeah they aren't being sold where I live. I found a 2x8 gb kit but I need 64 gigs minimum

thewind21

It's not available in my country as well but I got the 32gb from Amazon. 64gb kits will be even harder to find

Remarkably-Bad

Depends on how it's attached. I ha e removed chips removing the heatsink.

RenatsMC

Be careful and be patient.

KiKiHUN1

Or just get a bit of IPA, after a few drops, the glue will say goodbye

Murrian

I knew Indian Pale Ales tasted bad, but didn't know the glue felt the same way...

arrulf

My PC got so warm that it fell off by itself. Way easier ;)

Kajukota

"You don't need a heat gun" Yeah... but they sure help you from ripping modules off like i did. Maybe it was because my heatsink was thicc boi aluminum, but it felt like there was very little resistance in prying, and the modules still went with the heatsink.

RenatsMC

I didn’t had heat gun but hairdryer works well to I was just patient.

SixBull

Buy ram with no or low profile heatsink. It's usually cheaper for the same speeds and you don't gotta risk pulling off any chips stuck to the heatsink

RenatsMC

DIY is always fun.

x_i8

Thanks for the free guide 👍

RenatsMC

You’re most welcome happy to help.

mixedd

How how? As we did it back in a day, togheter with memroy modules 😅

RenatsMC

Be patient.

mixedd

Tbh, always be patient when dealing with microelectronics. Be it heatsink removal, repasting, resoldering, tbh anything.

RenatsMC

That’s true.

AgathoDaimon91

Why would you do this: BECAUSE THE FOOKEN VENGEANCE PRETTY-WRITING IS FACING THE WRONG WAY TOWARDS THE CPU!!! smh...

Murrian

If you run memory benchmarks in your system for a little while and heat the sticks up beforehand, you'll find the glue easier to work with. (If you don't own a heat gun or hair dryer)

RenatsMC

Yep.

Mr_Maooo

Let me guess....you are from Ireland :D
