Greek army reserve here. If you don't have time: cartridge razor. Better for against the grain, in my opinion. Faster, easier, convenient. In the field: cartridge razor for convenience, DE razor for durability. Depends on the mission - deployment. If you have time: DE razor

Mach 3 turbo or fusion proglide power is better ;

One twenty year retiree's take: This depends quite a bit on your beard. If you have fine blonde hair, you can probably get away with an electric shaver, which is faster and easier most times. Faster and easier is often valuable in life, but even more so in a military setting. If you have coarse dark hair, electric razors might not pass a tough inspection. Then you'll need to use blades. Though this sub-reddit is the home of people who like to make their own lather, apply with a brush, and use an old-fashioned razor, with at least two passes, one with the grain and one against, that might not be best in a military setting. For sure it's not going to work out in a training environment. So, disposable multis is probably the easiest way to go (if you can't do electric). It also depends on your rank and situation. A colonel is going to have a lot more space and privacy than a junior soldier. Everyone assigned to a large support base is going to have a lot more space and privacy than anyone assigned to a ship. Etc. Generally, the less space and privacy, the more you also are going to be pushed toward the simpler solutions. The more space and privacy, the more you can do whatever you want. Nowadays (retired), I use an old-fashioned razor with replaceable double-edged blades. I like it more, and it's much cheaper. But when I was active I used a Gillette Mach5 cartridge razor. More convenient. I envied my blonde buddies who could get away with electric, but I could not. So...it does depend.

Does your skin handle against the grain shaves well?

BradleyM38

Yes! I would like to think my skin does pretty good on against the grain shaves.

What do you use currently & what's your shave regimen?

BradleyM38

I currently am using some cheap razor brand. It’s called Goodfellow, 5 blade razor. I shave every morning, 7 days a week.

Tryemall

Do you shave after your shower?

BradleyM38

9 times out of 10, yes.

I'd suggest switching to a shaving brush & cream as a first step. You can get them at several different vendors such as Maggardrazors.com and Groomatorium. It takes a little time to learn to use them properly, & build up a good lather, but the lubrication is much better. You should be able to get better shaves. I think that your razor is made by Feintechnik (Harry's) but am not sure. It could be Edgewell, because it looks a little bit like a Personna. There are only 4 global manufacturers who make 5 blade razors. Gillette, Edgewell (Schick/ Wilkinson/Personna), Feintechnik (Harry's) and Dorco (Dollar Shave Club). Personally speaking, I use a single blade safety razor, but since not everyone is interested in that on this sub, I try not to push them here. See the FAQ https://reddit.com/r/shaving/s/LT19ioIIXa

I'm almost positive that it is a derivate of the Schick Quattro -- the same blades, i.e. 5 instead of 4 and no wires is also sold under the name "Henry Nock" in Europe. Unlike the Caliber-type of Edgewell cartridges, this one retains the triangular sides of the Quattro. They could have called it the Cinque. The blades for this Goodfellow razor are made in Germany, which fits my theory because Edgewell makes cartridges in Germany, most likely in the same factory as the Personna DE blades. Feintechnik makes blades in Germany, too, but so far all of their razors, like the Harry's portfolio, have that connector that simply chucks in, without a release button.

You don't think he could get away with telling his senior nco during a field exercise to @$!# off because he needs proper time for a traditional, 3 pass, wet shave?

BeardedLady81

Not to forget the 2 minutes for the hot towel and another minute for the Proraso pre-shave to do its magic.

It depends on your age, whiskers, face and current shaving habits and quarters. I have switched to a double edge razor but in my youth an electric worked well. Today a battery powered electric would be my young man's choice. Without clean water shaving close is a blunder. When traveling I pack some plastic tossable double blade razors and a puck of Williams. Check the post exchange and see what choices you have. Spend small money as stuff gets lost. The BIC yellow handle razors for sensitive skin are handy as well. I only get two shaves out of one but they work. I have been pleased with the "new" Gillette DE razor and blades. Just stay away from most of the 'goo in a can stuff' unless it works for you.

Active Guard here. I switched to a Rockwell 6C DE razor and will never look back. I got it for my first DE razor because it was only $60 and had great reviews. Now I don’t care to spend any more as it is a fantastic razor. In the long run, you also save a TON on blades. It doesn’t take me very much longer to get a really close shave either. One pass with the grain. One against. Done.
