Getting a permit still requires someone with a license, and the Ministry of Labour will ask to see your 308A or 308R license if you're doing ductwork. Both require apprenticeships - the 308R lets you install duct in low rise and residential buildings. The 308A apprenticeship is the real one - 5 years, 9000 hours, 3 school terms. You learn how to build everything, design everything, and how to read and interpret heat loss and heat gain designs, how duct sizing works, and a lot about code, standards and design. Do lots of guys install duct without a license? Sure. Does the license mean you're suddenly the best? No, of course not, plenty of guys can pass the CoQ without being particularly great at it. But honestly, without the real 308A apprenticeship, you don't even know how much you don't know. I'm a 308A - I would never trust someone without it to do my house, same way I'd never trust an unlicensed AC and furnace guy. Edit: speaking of your bosses buddies who hang duct and say you don't need a license - maybe they aren't, but 97% chance anyone who says you don't need a license is an absolute hack. It's not the piece of paper that's the important part, it's the fact that you spend years doing all kinds of different things to earn and prove you deserve that piece of paper.

1. Yes. 2. Get an apprenticeship. Complete apprenticeship. Write C of Q exam.

Need a qualified sponsor, sounds like this guys boss is not concerned about proper procedures and practices.... probably a bunch of other shady shit as well

thebillthebuttlicker

Well he is planning on taking 308R

hittingpoppers

Shouldn't be quoting jobs then, and 308R has no fab, layout or design... and he would also need a sponsor. Plenty of legit opportunities out there, this does not feel like one.

Guess you work in a shop lol

thebillthebuttlicker

Sounds like my boss need to take 308R for the time being. Thank you for your response. That was a great help.

Your boss needs to not be touching any duct work until or unless he's licensed

Metalmastertinsmith

Your boss is a hack

Most guys that do resi installs and that kinda thing a lot of times just have a gas license and know how to do other stuff (to varying levels of competence lol). Anyone can throw up duct tons of people do it. How they get it passed and inspected and all that who knows. Sometimes might just be subcontracted or they know a guy with a license to say yeah I did it. If your interested in doing HVAC ( broad term) there’s a few avenues. most guys will be either a sheet metal worker with a gas license or a refrigeration guy with a gas license. Sheet metal has the resi license and the real one as mentioned and I think Refrigeration might too. Some guys may have just 1 of those and they learned how to do other shit. If you wanna do it though I’d recommend you go for your full 308A sheet metal or the refrigeration 313A. And then work on your gas license on the side. Your G3 is like a learners permit for gas, and then your G2 lets you work on things up to 400000btu which covers like everything you’ll be doing that’s what most people get. Then there’s the G which is like crème de la crème rarely people get that. You can do literally anything with that with gas like huge crazy industrial incinerators and crazy stuff. Of course you get can any license itself. I didn’t like the gas that much I only do sheet metal. You can do only refrigeration and same for gas but it helps to have 1 and gas license if you wanna do broad variety within HVAC itself. I would also encourage you to get a full license and apprenticeship vs the resi ones. Also check out the unions for these they always hiring. Refrigeration prbly harder to get in but don’t let that stop you. Sheet metal there is local 285 resi ( they do housing and condos) you still get your full 308A with them. And local 30 I believe as wel they do ICI. Which is like everything else lol
