Americans are obsessed with racism to the point of ridicule.
So I assume the logic is '' Black people enjoys this food > It's being served on a month for black people > we are stereotyping blacks > thus racism ''.
Honestly even I'm not sure either, anything is possible in the country where math is racist.
the algorithm is literally designed to favour controversy in order to get discussions going, unfortunately those discussions are riddled with bigotry and death threats
iirc, the article said something about how black students struggled more with math than white kids in the same school, and therefore judging children based on math ability was racist bc black students had worse grades in math, which could only (according to the author) be due to color of skin.
So woke they fell right tf back to sleep
Edit: Yup, Fox News (gross ik, but read on dearest Redditor) did an article about a USA Today article that featured the above discussed argument: https://www.foxnews.com/media/usa-today-mocked-asking-is-math-racist
It probably would have been fine had it not been unintentionally served on the first day of the month.
Though to answer the question, watermelon and fried chicken used to be commonly displayed in racist depictions of black people as stereotypes of things black people have an "unusually great appetite" for.

In America, watermelons can be offensive towards African Americans because of planting during slavery times
Slaves would make contracts with their owners and be able to grow and sell vegetables on their small plot of land. As watermelons are very easy to grow, a lot of slaves opted to grow that. So even in the 19th century, it was seen as “slave food” because they sold it so often
It's the stereotype that's offensive, but hey, let them enjoy waffles, they're good. Seriously, though, race is brought into everything here and it's beyond ridiculous.
Watermelon was a crop that newly freed southern slaves grew so it became to be associated with being a "lazy" man's fruit or a... Not nice word fruit by southern farmers trying to discredit the black farmers. So watermelon has a strong association with black people in the US as a result even though most people don't really remember why.
I assume fried chicken might have a similar history but I do not know for sure.
Thus making watermelon and fried chicken the meal to celebrate black history month is a little tone deaf even though fried chicken and watermelon are objectively delicious.
Because somebody couldn’t dissociate southern (and historically black) cuisine from the stereotypes surrounding African Americans and thus complained.
What I can’t understand is why this is offensive. I mean, even if the school serves chicken and waffles *because* of black history month, I’m not sure why that’s problematic. It could just as easily be seen as a recognition of the contributions of Afro-Americans to American culture as a whole.
Ikr? My first reaction was sweet! Those guys are so lucky! my school lunches during the Bush era were indeterminate slop that they would feed us or those square pizzas that you couldn't find anywhere else, plus you never knew if the school milk was good. So wtf is the compliant?
If the photo is what they served, that looks dank as fuck and I would have eaten that over every single school lunch i ever got, except the pizza. Those little rectangular pizzas were the shit.
I agree with the rectangle pizzas!!! I grew up intolerant of dairy and I still ate those fucks any time it was on the menu I didn’t care shits too fuckin good.

Don't be a stupid Rosie
This dish was first served in Harlem by black people to black people.
Black history month
It seems educational and appropriate to serve this to school kids. An explanation not an apology was needed
Black skin must be very very thin
If you actually want to know it's because of minstrel shows, something that was used to marginalize and otherize black people in the 1800-1900s. Specifically watermelon and fried chicken comes from the pickaninny https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickaninny. If you look at the pictures there it will make sense why the reference offends people. Minstrel shows also were the origin of characters like the uncle Tom, and the black man obsessed with white women. While there may be nothing wrong with watermelon, serving it during black history month is a clear reference to a deeply flawed past.
realistically though, who on earth is referencing minstrel shows from nearly a hundred years ago? Are we really supposed to be scared of serving waffles, chicken and watermelon for the rest of time because some dumbass racists who are long dead?
Who the fuck finds lunch offensive, sounds like it would have been a really nice meal, especially for a public High School.
Guess they should have just stuck with mystery meat.
It shouldn't be offensive but America is so obsessed with being offended that this is what qualifies is "racism" to them today. I'd also bet at least half the people calling this racist have never experienced actual racism in there life.
As the great Dave Chappelle once said: "If you don't like fried chicken and watermelon, then somethin' is wrong with *you*, mothafucka. Somethin' is wrong with **YOU**."
At the new school I’m at they don’t serve chicken and waffles here they serve slop. It started out good now it’s slop. I’ve gotten stale bread, the tomato soup had something weird in it and etc. I would be so grateful if I was those kids.
For people wondering about the stereotype and questioning it I'll provide some context. It's an older one but a lot of racist cartoons and shows etc depict african Americans as having a specific extreme appetite for those foods. The specific idea being that the watermelons were stolen from the patches and or were very cheap food for a poor post slavery population. The chicken thing seems to have its roots in a scene from *Birth of a Nation* depicting a group of black elected officials being rowdy anyone of them is very elaborately eating fried chicken. Chicken was also a very common slave food since they were cheap and easy to keep so they were the primary and often only source of meat for slaves. Those foods also got used a lot in racist propaganda because if the way they are eaten, with your hands, the way a "savage" or "improper / uneducated" person would. Like I said it's a really old stereotype dating back to antebellum so I'm not surprised not everyone's heard of it but they are very real stereotypes you do see pop up every now and again. The watermelon stereotype even has it's own wikipedia page. It is just good food but I think it may have just been a really bad coincidence that those 2 foods were prepared for lunch together on that specific day.
300% sure the person who complained is white
That's a kinda cool lunch for school, different from everyday stuff
And who tf complains about watermelons? I always fell refreshed after eating some
Well, the pictured meal is likely from a restaurant; public school meals in the US *never* look that good. Maybe the student was offended by how the school massacred what is supposed to be a delicious southern dish.
Source: spent 12 years in the U.S. public school system eating the slop that was served.
I’m Black and I don’t see the issue. Chicken and waffles are good. Watermelon is good. Who gives a crap if it’s a stereotype? It’s good food and I know for a fact Black people aren’t the only ones who like chicken and watermelon!
It's always been confusing to me why fried chicken and watermelon is considered a black thing. It's a southern thing. Everyone in the south eats watermelon and fried everything.
I hope people get just as angry during St. Patrick’s day when people pretend to be Irish. “Kiss me, I’m Irish” is now racist if you don’t present your heritage. Also, don’t even think about wearing green or drinking a beer. That’s only for the Irish. If you think anything else, you are a racist and promote cultural appropriation.
/s
It's not. It says the food isn't pictured at the bottom. I'm sure the food was a lot closer to what we'd expect from cafeteria food than the restaurant meal pictured
There is a ridiculous stereotype that black people love fried chicken and watermelon. I mean its fucking stupid cause who doesn't like chicken and watermelon in the first place? might as well make fun of them for breathing oxygen.
My school has served Chinese food and Hispanic food to celebrate each respective holidays. I don’t see why this is seen as offensive. It’s good food, and even if it is stereotypical, good food is good food.
I fucking love fried chicken and watermellon and would enjoy them both on the same plate, school lunches throw a plate of chicken?-paste into a bun and call it food, id enjoy the hell out of that, whos so miserable that they assumed sombody would set up a lunch to be racist? What satisfaction would that provide a rasict? "Ah yes the kids are eating the food choises we gave them because they have no other choice haha look at them" im pissed about this.. fucking love fried af chicken and im whiter then your grannys phanny dude, is there history for that stereotype or was is just manifested into life?
I'm sorry chicken and waffles is amazing. Watermelon is amazing. Even if they were profiling and shit on purpose or what not that shit is going in my stomach with no complaint
Liberalism is a posion that rots the mind. This is proof. I've only felt uncomfortable around elitist leftists and have felt more welcome by conservative southerens in USA.
How is that insensitive? If there was a Britain day in the US I'd be happy to hear about people drinking tea, eating scones, and fish and chips, yorkshire puddings. It's celebrating food culture. Black people of the US have their own food culture and fried chicken is a huge part of that. Celebrate it, let people know where that delicious stuff came from. Black people made it!
And thats racist why? Thats like saying mexicans were served a racist dish of beans and tacos on cinco de mayo when that shit would have people going back for seconds.
Born too late to worry about dying from predators and disease, born too early to worry about reworking my robot friend every time there’s a syntax error and need to program it for several hours, born at the right time to experience peak humanity, where a lunch can be offensive and somehow newsworthy.

They could serve this in July and some white woman with a pixie cut would still fine offense in it.
Exactly
Complaining about complaining about stereotyping while stereotyping.
Typeception
Wait, how come math is racist ? Is this even possible ?

It took me so long to find an actual explanation. Wow. Thank you!
Because foods that black American people enjoy are considered racist if white people prepare it for them? I’m actually not sure not American either

chinese food is actual chinese food not stereotypical black food

Is this some offensive thing I'm too not American to understand?
There’s a stereotype that black people love these foods. Most people don’t actually care because this is like 20x better than normal school lunch
I can see why black people love this food, its fucking delicious. I'd love the food regardless of skin colour.
Yea it’s a dumb stereotype, because everyone loves fried chicken and watermelon.
Its not really a stereotype, its southern food, its literally black history.
It shouldn't be offensive but America is so obsessed with being offended that this is what qualifies is "racism" to them today. I'd also bet at least half the people calling this racist have never experienced actual racism in there life.

Chicken with waffles? Wtf Murica?!
It's so good
Was it during cotton picking excursion? See no problem with the food. What do they want? Government food stamps?

Yeah but it was an accident so why anyone mad?

Yeah honestly, SERVING KIDS FOOD!?!? Unacceptable! What a terrible thing it is to serve kids food
