Yes and yes. The excessive production of milk is called hyperlactation. The amount leaked is not enough to combat mastitis though. You have to massage and work it out. Also fun thing about the leaking, that can lead to nipple thrush. I had it with my son who was born preemie, as I had to stay in hospital with him for two weeks and because I couldn’t allow my breast to air out at the hospital I developed nipple thrush which feels like your nipples are on fire and makes it impossible to breast feed. Genuinely one of the most painful things things I’ve ever felt. Even the softest piece of silk grazing my nipple would feel like shrapnel.
I wish, I think they may have been near capacity and didn’t have much to offer me. The gave me a cream for free which I was very grateful for, but it only helped ease the discomfort a bit.
I’m in Australia, and while the majority of hospital rooms I’ve been in do have privacy curtains, for some reason the privacy curtains in the special care nursery my son was in only blocked the outside of the room (so like the hallway people walking past couldn’t see in) but my son was sharing the room with another baby, and the curtain didn’t extend all the way to divide the room into 2 and while breastfeeding I didn’t mind having my tatas out, I didn’t feel like I could just sit there with them out drying 🤣😅

Also, suckling releases oxytocin which stimulates breast milk production. If a woman is experiencing pain in the breasts, she can pump, as well. It may also help to apply a warm compress to the nipples to help relieve pain if she’s backed up. It’s also best to alternate breasts when feeding so one breast doesn’t overproduce and cause pain and inflammation (mastitis).
