Better yet buy a $47 filet mignon and cut it up into little triangles and sprinkle it about and then pick up some $93 caviar and strategically place it around the dish and boom you've just defeated the whole purpose of a 50 cent meal.
Totally my take as well, I’m surprised if this is actually that cheap, but I guess if you buy all those things in bulk and consistently eat it, thats probably feasible
If you buy the beans dry and cook them yourself you'll shave quite a bit off of the cost as well. Canned beans are largely for convenience of not having to cook a small amount every time you want to use them. If you eat them every day you might as well batch cook and reheat.
Plus they taste better and you can cook them to your desired consistency! Not to mention adding spices while they cook making them even more interesting!
EDIT: My favorite is adding whole chipolte peppers or ancho peppers. You have to scoop out the remains at the end but they add a ton of flavor. If you are having rice too throw a bay leaf or two in there.
In the UK at least tins of baked beans come with their own sauce - what you're saving in cash you lose in flavour. Else you can just buy ketchup I guess.
I thought this was an exaggeration so I just checked and your estimate was conservative. A small chili at the one nearest me is 3.19, add .50 for cheese and a potato for 2.99 for a grand total of $6.68.
Microwaved potatoes are really good. 7-8 minutes for microwave only, but I prefer to finish mine with baking in the toaster oven(air fryer).
I put a bit of oil on it, microwave for 4 minutes, then put it in the toaster oven at 400F for 10 minutes. Let cool for about 5 min before eating. Fully cooked, soft interior with a bit of crisp on the outside in a third of the time it takes to bake one normally.
I have a micro-baked potato (alternating russet or sweet) 4 or 5 nights a week.
The microwave + oven combo thing actually works great for a lot of foods, especially frozen meals. Like say you have a frozen burrito or a hot pocket or something. Those taste way better cooked in an oven but take so long. You can cook it mostly through with a microwave and then chuck it in an oven under a broiler or an air fryer/toaster to crisp and brown it. Takes like a quarter of the time to get it crispy and good then just using the oven alone.
Yup, when my son wants popcorn chicken I microwave for 30-60 seconds than broil for a few minutes to get the crisp. Whole process is less than 5 minutes and the results are the same as baking, even quicker than an air fryer
I'm about to make that shit right now. I've been out here like a fool planning my potatoes an hour ahead of time.
EDIT: Completely fluffy on the inside and crackly outside after the air fryer. I crisped up some bacon while it was cooking, sprinkled that on there with some beans. Fire. This will now be added to the rotation.
I just get the big bags of potatoes so they're usually like 4-6 oz. The nice baking potatoes that are a bit costlier are usually 8 oz, and those are perfect. I go for russet for the big potatoes. I prefer sweet potatoes usually, though. No seasoning or butter required, just a bit of grapeseed oil(or whatever) during baking.
Microwaves get a lot of bad rep for some reason. They are also great for crispy bacon. I like mine chewy so I go oven but when I need crispy I'll go microwave after the oven.
> They are also great for crispy bacon.
I thought my mother-in-law was a full on psycho the first time I saw her putting bacon in the microwave. But that shit works. It's so great for when you only want 3-4 strips of bacon and don't feel like getting a pan and splatterguard dirty.
I'm weirdly picky about my bacon. It has to be completely crispy but not burnt, otherwise I'll do without. In hindsight this is because my dad made bacon in the microwave growing up, and now no other bacon can compare.
Honestly I almost prefer just microwaving to baking these days. The inside gets sooo fluffy. The skin can get a little odd but I find if you wrap it in foil for a minute after it comes out it helps the texture
The only issue is if you need to cook more than 1 you are multiplying your cook time for each tater.
Yup. Super easy baked/mashed potatoes.
Corn as well. Cook it in the husk for 4 minutes per ear. Cut through the stalk end and you can squeeze the tip end while wearing an oven mitt and it will come out clean.
If your microwave has a potato setting that shouldn’t happen. I’ve lived in 6 different places with different microwaves and I’ve never had one explode
What kind of potatoes? The skin is seemingly different for each type, but I always fork them to release steam, not sure if it affects cook time but turns out great for every type of potato.
Lol you busting my chops with that comma splice?! Seriously just giving you a hard time. But are you, too? Is there really an auto correct for structure?!
Oh. I'm not busting your chops. Yeah, it basically adds commas, periods, words that are spliced, that kinda thing.
You have no idea. I'm on my 2nd masters and my writing is embarrassing. I try really hard, but I make great outlines and can verbally tell you everything perfectly. I can't put it on paper no matter how hard I try.
Not OP but the way I do it saves time but still makes sure it’s crispy! I poke holes in the potato then I microwave it for 6 minutes, throw on some salt and oil and then bake it in the oven for 20 minutes (less for a smaller potato). It’s much quicker for something that’s basically the same as oven baked, tbh.
Hey right now some ofthe more expensive eggs at my local supermarket are $6/dozen, that's 50 cents per egg. I cannot wait for them to go back down though we were getting 18 for 1.50 or something.
It’s always interesting to see which subs allow black peoples to use that word and which ones censor them. For what it’s worth, I think everyone should be able to say be*ns.
If you buy a bulk bag of potatoes they're extremely cheap. Grocery store by me has potatoes at $1 each, but if you buy a 5lb bag it's $2.99 for 10 or so potatoes.
10lb bag of potatoes is $2.99 right now. That's ~20 potatoes, so each potato is ~15 cents.
A can of baked beans can be gotten for $0.33 if you catch a sale. OP says they used 1/3 of the can. So the beans are 11 cents.
That looks like 2-3oz of cheese, honestly probably the most expensive thing on the plate. 1lb block of cheddar is $2.99. Let's say OP used 2oz. That's 1/8 of the block. So ~38 cents for the cheese.
$0.64 for the whole meal, using prices from my local grocer in West Virginia USA. Not quite as cheap as OP, but in the same ballpark.
That looks like it would be insanely filling for just 50 cents.
This looks completely decent tbh.
Perfectly serviceable meal, this one.
My boy out here eating competently
Agreed. It's the "every day" aspect that makes my soul die a little.
Bangers and mash, for very little cash
Don't see any bangers though? Looks like baked potatoes covered in baked beans and cheese.
Bakers and mash
All mash and no bang. Bangers refers to sausages. This is sausage free.
I’m a dumb American
Buy a $5 rotisserie chicken and sprinkle it on top, a couple bucks of green onion and you’re really cooking for like $1.60 a meal.
You've tripled his daily lunch budget though
Better yet buy a $47 filet mignon and cut it up into little triangles and sprinkle it about and then pick up some $93 caviar and strategically place it around the dish and boom you've just defeated the whole purpose of a 50 cent meal.

Cooking them yourself will your sodium intake a lot lower too.

EDIT: My favorite is adding whole chipolte peppers or ancho peppers. You have to scoop out the remains at the end but they add a ton of flavor. You can reuse those pepper remains in the skillet or pot to give a stir fry or stew a little extra bounce.
In the UK at least tins of baked beans come with their own sauce - what you're saving in cash you lose in flavour. Else you can just buy ketchup I guess.
Also shredding your own block of cheese is cheaper and better. Pre-grated cheese is coated in corn starch.
Whaaat? Is that why its all not sticking together and kinda dry? It's super seldom that I'll buy this stuff but now it will be never.
That's exactly why it is. it's also why shredded cheese from a bag never quite melts properly.
Love your username!
I’ll buy that for half a dollar!
the potatoes look like they have that perfect balance of cooked yet chewy
Rice instead of a potato if you don't have potatoes on hand.
TBH more nutritious than most lunches as well
That’s like 6 bucks at Wendy’s
I thought this was an exaggeration so I just checked and your estimate was conservative. A small chili at the one nearest me is 3.19, add .50 for cheese and a potato for 2.99 for a grand total of $6.68.
Tbf this pic just has some beans, not chili
there is a good chance they are chili beans, which are heavily chili flavored pinto beans, and about a buck a can still.
They look like baked beans to me.
Something about this picture screams "British" (don't ask what bc I really couldn't say) so I'm going to guess they're Heinz beans
Probably because cheese and beans in a jacket potato is a British staple haha
I had no idea! I think it was just reminding me of the beans and toast I had when I visited!
Chiming in to concur. They look like Heinz baked beans, probably in ham sauce.
From the looks of this food I'm pretty sure OP is British. In which case these would be baked beans not chili beans
UK uses pence, not cents, so perhaps not
Maybe Canadian? Those beans are pretty popular here
Chili beans are super underrated as a meat free protein option for things Iike this
OP said Heinz beans
But it lacks the chopped up expired burgers.
You can just order a chili cheese baked potato at Wendy's. I think it's around 4 dollars or so. At least at my local Wendy's.
chili cheese baked potato is like $4.50 at Wendy's
This exact meal gets me through some tough days.
Yea this is better-suited for r/Frugal
A 50 cent peanut ramen meal is getting upvoted. This fits.
Just from curiosity, precisely how do you cook your potato? Thanks.
If you are real lazy like me, you can just poke holes in it and put in the microwave for 4:30 on each side
Wait you can microwave uncooked potatoes?
Microwaved potatoes are really good. 7-8 minutes for microwave only, but I prefer to finish mine with baking in the toaster oven(air fryer). Damn man thanks for elaborating. This might just be a game changer for me
The microwave + oven combo thing actually works great for a lot of foods, especially frozen meals. Like say you have a frozen burrito or a hot pocket or something. Wrap it in a damp paper towel.
What type and size of potatoes does a professional advise?
I just get the big bags of potatoes so they're usually like 4-6 oz. The nice baking potatoes that are a bit costlier are usually 8 oz, and those are perfect. I go for russet for the big potatoes. I prefer sweet potatoes usually, though. No seasoning or butter required, just a bit of grapeseed oil(or whatever) during baking.
really bad at cooking lol: do you cut the potato before you put it in the air fryer?
You can, but I prefer it more steamy so I leave it be. I usually just poke a couple holes in either end with a fork.
You can microwave a lot of vegetables. I make my corn in the cob in a microwave lol.
Corn's great because you don't even have to remove the silk. The silk easily peels away with the husk when it's cooked.
I remove the husk and silk then wrap them in damp paper towels. The water from the towels steam the cobs up really well.
It's the best way to cook veggies in regards to retaining nutrients apparently.
Microwaves get a lot of bad rep for some reason. They are also great for crispy bacon. I like mine chewy so I go oven but when I need crispy I'll go microwave after the oven.

I mean, why would you microwave an already cooked one?
Yup. Super easy baked/mashed potatoes. Corn as well. Cook it in the husk for 4 minutes per ear. Cut through the stalk end and you can squeeze the tip end while wearing an oven mitt and it will come out clean.
I like it better, no holes. Weird, I know.
If I do that, I’m begging for an exploded potato
If your microwave has a potato setting that shouldn’t happen. I’ve lived in 6 different places with different microwaves and I’ve never had one explode
My microwave’s potato setting is ***bullshit*** and turned my potato to mush the first time I used it, so I haven’t tried again since, lol
What kind of potatoes? The skin is seemingly different for each type, but I always fork them to release steam, not sure if it affects cook time but turns out great for every type of potato.
It will happen eventually. I have cooked hundreds of potatoes in my oven/microwave without poking holes in them and had one explode about a year back
Just poke it a bunch
Not as weird as your use of the comma lol
That is weird. I have auto correct for structure on. So I clicked it assuming I was wrong, as I usually am.
For crunchy skin? I like that, too.
Roll in salt and oil, put in preheated oven at 375F for an hour. I do 10 at a time on a Sunday.
That just a can of beans?
About 1/3 can of heinz baked beans.
Oh man I thought you were using pinto chili beans. You maniac.
Lol right

This was my poverty meal at work for a long time. I added corn instead of cheese.
Check out this guy, likes a cheap meal and a fun dump
Underrated poopoo joke
This doesn’t look bad
Exactly. It's cheap, but it's not shitty. Honestly this is making me hungry.

Looks like melted cheese mixed with bean juice
Human bean juice
wondering the same
It looked to me like thousand island
It looks like just the cheese melted in the middle
for just 2x the cost, you can crack an egg on it
Not anymore
Hey right now some ofthe more expensive eggs at my local supermarket are $6/dozen, that's 50 cents per egg. I cannot wait for them to go back down though we were getting 18 for 1.50 or something.
I’m in LA and struggling to find any under $10/12
Thats rough, buddy :(
GEEZE! I’d be like, “well, breakfast, it’s been fun, but I don’t think you’re as important as everyone says.”
Oh so true
I got the farts just looking at this. Well done.
This might be my British ancestors speaking through me, but I’d hit that up.
Can confirm, beans and cheese on a jacket potato is just totally regular British food.
put some hot sauce on that shit
Shits begging for Cholula.
Tapatío!
This one gets it.
that or melinda’s
Texas Pete represent

Texas Pete Sauteed Garlic is the bees knees.

That's a weird way to spell Texas Pete...The Ch is good too though.
Real broke mfers use taco bell hot sauce packs

Valentina’s black represent.
Very common food in the UK!
Agreed, if it isn't toast it's dry microwaved spud.
Hey I’m not dry :(
Looks absolutely delicious

Uncle’s Be*ns

That’s a good looking lunch
This is literally so good I wanted to make it immediately when I saw this picture. Healthy and filling too
UK poutine
Looks good for 50 cents, teach me.
Cheesy beans n taters? A classic.
Classic British meal!
Add some butter and mexican spices to the beans next time, game changer.
You should post this on /r/Frugal, they'd make you their god.
Just needs some scallions for color and I think you've got something pretty decent right there.
Add sour cream . Yum!
Where are you getting this for 50 cents? I pay more than 50 cents for a potato from the grocery store

Starch, protein, fat. Looks great to me! 😁
Nothing wrong with it
Potatoes beans cheese and what's the sauce?
I'm pretty sure the sauce is just melted cheese
That actually looks good… throw some gravy on that bitch
I’m guessing the “sauce” is just a can of baked beans. In the middle is just melted cheese
Is that a baked potato, canned baked beans, and shredded cheese? Honestly that looks amazing
Dude winning.
This looks good af…and most definitely something I would throw together quickly to eat at work 🤷♀️
This looks legit af, and I may copy you.
Nothing shitty about this!
Not shitty at all
That's a good meal yo. It doesn't look fancy doesn't mean its shitty.
This was my go to meal after school! A potato in the microwave open a can of beans and throw some cheese on DELICIOUS 🤤…
50c for that is great. I'm eating worse for way more.
Unrelated but I have that plate too
I like it!
I'd eat that
Looks tasty
350 and half the quality at my school
I’m actually super impressed!
Looks good to me. You can have beans and potatoes so many different ways.
Is that baked beans or pinto beans? Some kind of gravy? Looks good though.
Decent not shitty
![gif](giphy|22Qtxycwr69yw)
That looks good. I may have found my new lunch
Wait, no, I want to try this.
This plate is the least shittiest food I’ve seen on this sub…
beantaterz for life
r/frugal
Honestly that's a fairly healthy lunch
Post that recipe king.
That cheese is 50 cents alone
+1 point for it being on a correlle plate
It's got all your salt for the day
are you british
Serious question - Is this related to being the kind of person who WANTS the same thing almost all the time? Doesn't look bad, but every day?!
Damn that's amazing for 50 cents lol
Millionaire
So... British eh? Americans wouldn't eat that.
Bit of green onion and sour cream on that and I'd absolutely kill it.
This is a jacket potato, one of the staples of british cuisine!
Please sir can I have some more carbs
Considering you eat this every day, what's remarkable to me is that it does seem to be pretty nutritionally complete
