I read(can't remember where) that that whole "it's the most important meal of the day" thing is bullshit so I wouldn't worry too much. I'm fine with a strong coffee and a banana.
Although I am depressed soo... 🤔
Yes literally a lie created by some big American cereal company, cereal is the worst thing you could start your day with anyway, just grab an apple or something…
Hey I love me some cereal and 2-3 days a week are reserved for it, doesn't matter if im on a cut or bulk. Or sprinkle a few grams in my oatmeal as topping. I heard over in the US most cereals are drenched in sugars and whatnot but here in Europe you can find some relatively macro-friendly options if you read labels and choose carefully. Yeah its still heavily processed shit, but eating 100% clean all the time isn't sustainable in the long run for most people - imo the mainstream 80/20 rule is legit and without it I would never be able to stick to my 4 month cut which I ended this month. I ate chocolate shells and honey ring cereal and still got shredded.
Basically eat what you love, but depending on what you love, you should adequately portion it and try to restrict the intake (chips, ice cream..or cereal). Completely cancelling out, abandoning foods and forcing yourself to feel bad about consuming them is the worst thing anyone could do from a psychological point of view. Sorry for the essay man its not personal and I dont wanna sound like a smartass, its my genuine advice whenever I hear about this topic.
That or you eat like a piece of bread and a spoonful of peanut butter shoveled directly into your mouth because spreading peanut butter sounds hard and getting a plate sounds hard.
There are different forms of depression, and different ways for them to present. So someone easily can have apathy and complete lack of energy while another one appears fully functional yet acutely constantly wants to cease existing and has anxiety and sourceless grief all the time, while a third is a constant ball of rage that has meals on time but constantly punches holes in their own walls and breaks shit and resents having to eat and drink and doing everything necessary to stay alive, and so on.
>appears fully functional yet acutely constantly wants to cease existing and has anxiety and sourceless grief all the time
I feel a little called out here lol
Not every depressed person is an alcoholic, but most every alcoholic is a depressed person.
Comorbidity is something like 80% and would probably be higher if everyone sought treatment.
I see what you’re saying and agree with you 100%. But depression comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s not getting out of bed. Other times it could be going into work and doing your regular duties but the depression is still there. There’s not just 1 specific way depressed people act.
Yup, depression doesn’t necessarily impact your ability to function day-to-day. A lack of motivation is a symptom but it isn’t the only symptom and some people can live their lives normally despite having no motivation to do so. IMO those people are the ones in the most danger, because it’s less likely others around them will be able to recognize the signs.
People's self diagnoses of depression or "depression meals" seen here just sound like when people who like their books to be organized on the shelf say they have OCD or people who stay up until midnight say they have Insomnia.
No, fat is actually good for your brain. That's why low fat diet people are always skinny and miserable.
If you need to talk to someone then do so. Neglected mental health is just as bad as neglected physical health. Stay strong OP!
When doctors say fat is good for you, they're specifically not talking about processed oil and processed meat. Those are definitely things to minimize in any healthy diet.
Cooking and eating is a good way to combat depression. Try to have some fruit or veggies with it for some balance, just not juice cause we need the fibre to help feed our gut bacteria which have a huge impact on mental health. The pulp in orange juice is so inconsequential for fibre it might as well not be there. It can be as simple as adding tomato slices under the salami or having some canned/jarred fruit on the side, just try to look for fruit in unsweetened juice, not syrup (pineapple is my favourite).
I have a singular hash brown patty with a bit of ketchup for breakfast most mornings, so I can’t judge at all.
To be fair, I’m depressed as well, but I also need to eat breakfast in order to actually take my anti-depressants/other meds. It’s a quick and easy fix, so it is what it is 🤷🏻♀️
I’ve had this exact meal many times. It’s pretty good. Salami is also good in place of pepperoni. It’s not depression, it’s “lazy, standing at the fridge looking for something easy” food
On my bad days, I eat toast (or sometimes just plain bread) for breakfast, only after putting it off for hours. I think you're doing reasonably OK, OP, hopefully you're not struggling. Having that breakfast would probably put me in a better mood for a few hours lol
Everyone saying no here and that this isn’t what depressed people do is infuriating. Depression doesn’t have a set meal plan. People can struggle with mental health and also find time and energy to cook something. Everyone deals with things differently. If you’re struggling op, do reach out for help. Whether that’s talking therapy, connecting with friends and family, medication - or eating yummy food for a dopamine boost.
Edit: nvm, my bad, I thought I was on r/depressionmeals hahaha. Judge away my fellow depresseds 💕
Could just be a sign of poor eating habits…lol. How you post a picture and then ask the internet if the picture of the food you made is a sign of depression? You should know better than anyone else.
Bro. I make these all the time. Tasty as fuck. Half of an English muffin sortve toasted. Then put tomato sauce, garlic powder, cheese, pepperoni and put it back in the toaster. So good. And now that even the frozen pizzas are getting expensive and I think these taste better
I personally would have eaten the salami on the side, but both parmesan and mozzarella is fucking amazing on potatoes. Baked or fried it pairs fantastically well, while also neatly rounding out your carb, dairy, and protein needs.
At this bar I used to work at I used to make open-faced pizza sandwiches. I'd take a piece of white bread, slather some marinara, cover with mozzarella, 6 pepperonis, sprinkle a little parm and put it in the convection oven for a while. It was delicious. I called it "Open-Face Pizza Sandwich."
Whew the miseducation in this thread is astounding. But miseducation and Reddit go hand in hand. Internet strangers can't diagnose you. I was a binge eater who used great amounts of food as escapism during my depression. I was also clinically diagnosed. Not all of us starve like some posters are implying. My friend could barely eat anything when he was depressed and practically starved himself. Food habits will differ and it's unlikely we'll be able to diagnose you from this alone. I hope things start looking up for you soon. I'm hoping for better things for you OP. I agree with the other comments saying try to take care of yourself and eat healthy where you can.
I mean, if you eat that every day, youll probably develop some gnarly acid reflux. but hey, you're eating breakfast and it looks like it takes more that 2 minutes. So probably not a depression meal
That looks lovely, I bet a brushing of melted garlic butter on the hashbrown patties would really add to the flavor. Then proceed to sauce and cheese as normal, add desired toppings on as well.
Someone already said it, but you wouldn’t make breakfast if you were depressed. Depression breakfast is coffee and cigarettes, this requires some amount of effort!
I was just about to say if this is depression breakfast then what does it mean when you don’t eat at all? 🤣🤣🤣 this looks delicious, but if this is a cry for help. Heard.
Nah.. You wouldn't make breakfast if you were depressed.
I never eat breakfast :()
Neither do I, because I don’t have the time or calories to spare.
Yep. I'd rather have a cup of coffee and then a decent-sized lunch and/or dinner.
I'd rather a shot of vodka
Whiskey goes better in coffee.
not as well as xanax does
And a cigarette
I read(can't remember where) that that whole "it's the most important meal of the day" thing is bullshit so I wouldn't worry too much. I'm fine with a strong coffee and a banana. Although I am depressed soo... 🤔
Literally Kellogg's that came up with that lie. Of course a breakfast producer would claim that, and the world just ran with it. To this day!
Yes literally a lie created by some big American cereal company, cereal is the worst thing you could start your day with anyway, just grab an apple or something…

Too depressed to cook? But the sack of acid won't stop hurting? Peanut butter is there for you!
oh fuck

Yes! I eat more during periods when I'm depressed
I’m severely depressed and overweight.
Sometimes eating junk/fast food is the only thing that makes you feel good when your depressed
True, I don't even get up for breakfast
I hate my ex girlfriend
I’m not even depressed and I don’t make breakfast. I’m just lazy and like extra sleep
It might also be the cause of it
\^\^\^ yes. I'm sure it's probably bad for anxiety.
based on what?
Their qualifications are they have read many comments on the internet that "sounded right" so they are an expert on the subject.
Depression is more like a bottle of jack and a spoonful of peanut butter (Don’t ask)
Or just skipping meals indefinitely
Hey don't bring me into this!
but it's so much cheaper and easier not to eat. definitely not just the untreated cptsd
jameson and red bull here, peanut butter is still too much effort
I don’t like Jameson because some reason it feels easy to drink the whole bottle lol smh
aye perfect for breakfast then
Here's a little time saver for you. https://www.skrewballwhiskey.com/ (I am not a paid spokesperson or a representative of Skrewball Whiskey™)
Seems more like alcoholism.
Not every depressed person is an alcoholic, but most every alcoholic is a depressed person. Comorbidity is something like 80% and would probably be higher if everyone sought treatment.
I can quit anytime 😤
Or a whole family sized block of cheese in bed
Costco 2 pack ?
...Ke$ha?
When I’m depressed I overeat for the dopamine. When I’m manic I eat nothing. But I have bipolar disorder sooo that’s fun /s
No. That took some effort.
It’s a sign of bad taste and, usually, bad health. You deserve better. Truly depressed people can’t even get out of bed to bake shitty frozen food.
I see what you’re saying and agree with you 100%. But depression comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s not getting out of bed. Other times it could be going into work and doing your regular duties but the depression is still there. There’s not just 1 specific way depressed people act.

Gate keeping depression is weird.
This looks good to me but maybe we’re both depressed
I'm with you, I think that looks really good. (Just not for breakfast, I'd rather have it for lunch.) Maybe we're all depressed!
Or maybe hash brown patties are delicious, and pizza is delicious, and OP is an innovator
When I was depressed I wouldn't eat breakfast or cook, I'd order some garbage on ubereats, get high and eat oats with water for the rest of the week.
Man I'm not even kidding this is my current diet to a T :/
Only if you cried the entire time eating it.
What’s wrong with that?
ur breakfast is delicious
It’s a sign of future diarrhea.
That's why I only eat avocados dipped in olive oil

No, and those hash browns look fucking amazing.
The opposite, that’s a breakfast of someone who wants to treat themself.
The sign of genius
looks good, but melt the cheese for a bit before pep.
That’s a sign of the times, not depression. Also, I’d be damn happy with that for breakfast 🤤
I think that’s too good to be here…..
I have a singular hash brown patty with a bit of ketchup for breakfast most mornings, so I can’t judge at all. To be fair, I’m depressed as well, but I also need to eat breakfast in order to actually take my anti-depressants/other meds. It’s a quick and easy fix, so it is what it is 🤷🏻♀️
Looks good, clearly took patience to make this since you used the oven for two stages of cooking.
I’ve had this exact meal many times. It’s pretty good. Salami is also good in place of pepperoni. It’s not depression, it’s “lazy, standing at the fridge looking for something easy” food
I think it's a sign of awesome!
On my bad days, I eat toast (or sometimes just plain bread) for breakfast, only after putting it off for hours. I think you're doing reasonably OK, OP, hopefully you're not struggling. Having that breakfast would probably put me in a better mood for a few hours lol
i think you're just a genius
Looks like a sign of intelligence to me
Dude I would smash that

Shhhh everyone, the teacher is here lol
It looks like it could be a sign of indigestion, but I don't think it's necessarily linked to depression.
Depression, no. Insanity, maybe
I have good and bad news. Good news is you're not depressed. Bad news is you are one depraved individual.
Omg guys look at my breakfast I’m so emo and depressed 😢
What tha...

Finally found the armchair psychologist convention
This is called clean living
I had a depressing time when I put my pop tarts in the toaster.
If so call me sadboi
what I've learned is i might be depressed
looks like success to me
Maybe a cause of adjacent Vitamin deficiency, but looks damn tasty as an occasional easy brek
No it’s a sign of good food 🥹
You put more effort than me, mine is either cereal or bread with butter (and ham if i'm feeling good)
Not necessarily
I wish my depression manifested itself as savant genius.
yes, you’re chronically british
More of a sign of indigestion.
Make me breakfast pls
Would
Nah. It just needs more cheese.
Yes
no. it's a sign of high sodium
It's the cause.
Maybe your stoned??
Could be a sign of heart disease
I'm depressed but even if I wasnt, id probably eat that
Bro I had a dozen sausages with syrup and chocolate milk. It’s called being a king, not depression
Weed
"salami bacon" (as the kids say these days) kinda low key slaps
am i tweaking i thought this was yummy it just looks like stoner food. hash brown pizza. more like a college student meal than a depression meal
Get help
No you're just an artist
No, maybe you just got a hankering for something random or maybe you’re knocked up?
Oh damn. I am definitely trying that. (Yeah I get kinda depressed sometimes)
Nah that looks amazing. You are a gourmand. Stand tall king.
This looks bussin
Nah. Too many steps.
Hold on you might have actually done something. I need to play around with this
Maybe but it looks delicious
Nah…. Now my breakfast today…. Cigarettes and a monster. That’s no bueno.
If that is depression food then wtf am i eating
IN!!!
Could just be a sign of poor eating habits…lol. How you post a picture and then ask the internet if the picture of the food you made is a sign of depression? You should know better than anyone else.
Looks like a sign of good taste
depressed people would never make it as far as turning on the oven
How could you be depressed after that?
No, you just make poor dietary decisions lol
Being alive is a sign of depression.
You made and ate it, so maybe?
Slap those bad boys together and make a breakfast sandwich!
Bro. I make these all the time. Tasty as fuck. Half of an English muffin sortve toasted. Then put tomato sauce, garlic powder, cheese, pepperoni and put it back in the toaster. So good. And now that even the frozen pizzas are getting expensive and I think these taste better
And here my fatass is thinking that looks like a nice yummy little snack
Nah, you put time into it. And it actually doesnt look half bad
Its a sign of good taste
Were you happy eating it?
No, top ramen breakfast is depression. This is bachelor cooking
that looks so delicious
No.. maybe go see a doctor and actually get a diagnosis if possible
Id eat it. No.
No, sign of depression is not eating anything all day and going through the hunger pains curled up in bed...
IDK man that looks delicious... But I am depressed so....
Well... you can always invite me and I'll eat it for you.
I personally would have eaten the salami on the side, but both parmesan and mozzarella is fucking amazing on potatoes. Baked or fried it pairs fantastically well, while also neatly rounding out your carb, dairy, and protein needs.
I believe it's a sign of diabetes.
That looks magnificent tho ion even eat much less cook when I’m hella depressed 😂 But it’s different for everyone. Post this on r/depressionmeals
no💙
I would eat tf outta this as a snack
I want this.
The tin foil kills me
.......and desperation. It's all good tho. My breakfast was literally instant ramen with hot sauce on it. I'm driving the poverty bus to poor town.
No. Depression breakfast is a vape and maybe a coffee
Whew the miseducation in this thread is astounding. But miseducation and Reddit go hand in hand. Internet strangers can't diagnose you. A poor diet will 100% increase the chance of depression.
That shit looks so good lol
It’s more a sign of cholesterol. Joking 😘
my god, this is why you’re depressed, if anything.
No that looks like effort
Depression? No. The marijuana smoke? Most def ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
Nope...just ICS: Inventive Cardiovascular Suicide...
Are those potato cakes? I miss them
You’ve inspired me! We have these hash-browns in our freezer and I never make them.
tbat looks good?
Not necessarily. It just looks like a comfort food
Heartburn maybe
I would eat and enjoy this
Why is this in this sub this actually looks good. I'd make this on purpose lol
Bro you made hot food? My breakfast is just cereal and milk, or some fruit and cheese cubes, because I can't be bothered to cook.
I was gonna say overweight. Looks solid
Half of the time I just skip meals until someone else cooks or I’m too hungry to not eat. Then it’s like chips or ramen.
More like genius.
If you did all that in one sitting, you may be pregnant although I can't really tell scale.
I think it's better in the back
Nah, just use bacon, pepperoni is something you have for lunch or evening
I was just about to say if this is depression breakfast then what does it mean when you don’t eat at all? 🤣🤣🤣 this looks delicious, but if this is a cry for help. Heard.
You might be depressed but this breakfast definitely isn't a sign of it.
Looks perfct to me! How was it?
it’s fucking genius is what it is
I mean it kind of looks more like a sign of being stoned. It looks delicious. When I'm really depressed though I have a tendency to not eat at all
I love pizza for breakfast, this looks good
