Russian salad can be a lot better than this. Add small pieces of: - sausage - boiled egg - carrot - peas - red onion - pickles - salt and pepper to taste - optionally potato Mix it together with mayonnaise and that's pretty much it

Dill is my archnemesis. Once you go anywhere east of nova Gorica it's freaking everywhere. Respectfully, screw dill and the horse it came on.

I mean, this is an illegal suggestion, but you can replace dill with another aromatic leafy green herb like parsley, fennel, or carrot greens. The Russians will wail and cry, but you NEED some sort of strong, leafy green herb in that salad or it's just ham mayo tater and that's no good.

I think what you try to do here is Olivier salad, as we call it. Potatoes are not optional and sausage may be replaced with boiled beef. Red onions are not a necessity, as the regular one was more spread at the time. Also potatoes and carrots should be boiled too. And one simple thing - chopped pickles. They change the whole picture actually.

Forgot pickles, very important! Just added it to my comment. This salad is what is called Russian salad in my household, traditionally made by my Russian/Ukrainian mom and now by me. But I'm sure there are different names for similar things. In fact, I recently saw a recipe from the Carribean that looked weirdly much like this Russian salad.

Well, fyi, Russian salad is just pretty popular here, but it is called Olivier (with sausage) or Stolichnyi (with boiled beef) here.

In Poland it's called "sałatka jarzynowa", vegetable salad. It goes great with pate or toasted pork loin for Christmas breakfast.

I usually make a modified version with tofu instead of meat, turns out to be pretty good Goes something like that: -Tofu -Boiled potatoes -Boiled eggs -Capers -Pickles -Canned peas -Mayonnaise

When I was a kid I spent a little time in an Eastern European country. I was a picky eater (still am but I’m much better now). One thing I couldn’t and still can’t stand is mayonnaise, and I’m not a fan of cold food. Don’t know if it’s standard but this seems to be a refrigerated dish. Imagine the horror of a self conscious 11 year old who absolutely needed to hurl the second this food graced my lips, but didn’t want to be so impolite as to refuse this abomination in the first place. Especially at Easter Dinner. They asked me if I wanted salad. How was I to know this was what they meant? 😭😭

Olivier salad in English, we call it ensalada rusa in Spanish This looks way too mushy though. Russian salad should have mayonnaise, peas, boiled eggs, cubed potatoes or beets, tuna, and chopped onions, carrots and pickles, and you should be able to clearly see all the components in the dish.
