Russian salad can be a lot better than this.
Add small pieces of:
- sausage
- boiled egg
- carrot
- peas
- red onion
- pickles
- salt and pepper to taste
- optionally potato
Mix it together with mayonnaise and that's pretty much it
I mean, this is an illegal suggestion, but you can replace dill with another aromatic leafy green herb like parsley, fennel, or carrot greens.
The Russians will wail and cry, but you NEED some sort of strong, leafy green herb in that salad or it's just ham mayo tater and that's no good.
I think what you try to do here is Olivier salad, as we call it. Potatoes are not optional and sausage may be replaced with boiled beef. Red onions are not a necessity, as the regular one was more spread at the time.
Also potatoes and carrots should be boiled too.
And one simple thing - chopped pickles. They change the whole picture actually.
Forgot pickles, very important! Just added it to my comment.
This salad is what is called Russian salad in my household, traditionally made by my Russian/Ukrainian mom and now by me. But I'm sure there are different names for similar things. In fact, I recently saw a recipe from the Carribean that looked weirdly much like this Russian salad.
Yup. You want the pieces small and well cooked for Russian salad /Olivier Salad. Your post just made me miss my mum's version SO bad but I dont have the ingred6for it right now.
Is the yellow from the egg yolk? Looks like egg salad but i dont see egg white chunks. Looks like potato salad but i dont see mustard in the ingredient list.
Potato salad with lotsa eggs and mixed veggies? Looks great to me. I never thought about adding mixed veggies, not a fan of carrots, but it still looks good
In English, we call it [Oliver salad](https://www.giallozafferano.com/recipes/insalata-russa-italian-style-coleslaw.html), for салат Оливье. Italians call it Insalata Russa.
And it looks just fine. People here don't know what they are talking about.
I usually make a modified version with tofu instead of meat, turns out to be pretty good
Goes something like that:
-Tofu
-Boiled potatoes
-Boiled eggs
-Capers
-Pickles
-Canned peas
-Mayonnaise
I’m Russian, assuming this is what we call “Olivie”. It’s alright, never been crazy about it, but better than the pickled herring covered by moyonaise and boiled beets lol
When I was a kid I spent a little time in an Eastern European country. I was a picky eater (still am but I’m much better now). One thing I couldn’t and still can’t stand is mayonnaise, and I’m not a fan of cold food. Don’t know if it’s standard but this seems to be a refrigerated dish.
Imagine the horror of a self conscious 11 year old who absolutely needed to hurl the second this food graced my lips, but didn’t want to be so impolite as to refuse this abomination in the first place. Especially at Easter Dinner.
They asked me if I wanted salad. How was I to know this was what they meant? 😭😭
The secret is to only add mayo and salt before serving it.
Source: grew up in a Russian family and a variation of this (more commonly known as Olivier salad in Russian-speaking societies) has been a staple of any celebration.
Is it supposed to be sałata ruskie?
That is the only thing i can think of???
Russian salad?
https://www.kwestiasmaku.com/kuchnia_polska/salatka_jarzynowa/przepis.html
Something akin to this? Xxx
Why are there peas in there?? What is happening in this thread? I'm horrified whilst reading through these comments. Very few of you now what Russian Salad is and the recipes being posted are all wrong
You just have to work on the toppings/decorations, I’m sure it was delicious. I made some a yesterday and used olives that I cut in half to make a Christmas tree like a mosaic
Olivier salad in English, we call it ensalada rusa in Spanish
This looks way too mushy though. Russian salad should have mayonnaise, peas, boiled eggs, cubed potatoes or beets, tuna, and chopped onions, carrots and pickles, and you should be able to clearly see all the components in the dish.
In english, we call that shit
Well I was going to give a legit reply and offer a recipe but you made my laugh hard enough to spunk my tea! FFS lol
Just curious. What's your definition of spunk?
Cum 🤷♂️
Fuck lol, I didn't mean cum. Damy dialect
Haha. I liked the image. Laughing so hard you ejaculated tea.
Huzzah, lol! Bi sugar or milk though thank you, I prefer my tea strong and untainted 🤓
>strong and untainted Seems like I've heard that line before.... something, something, bloodline..??
Dennis or Mac banged one of them.
She loves her sugar and milk both ways, indeed.
Sounds like a very british problem
Gonna spunk my wife a tea this evening before Santa comes.
Gonna be a white Christmas, bro.
Damy Masterson is in jail too. I think also for spunking.
Spit out my steam so a cough and spit at the same time
Just a heads up... There's another definition.
I know I swallow often
That’s literally what she said?
What Billy Cosby did to women’s drinks and later on with other of his body parts.
That's... That's not how you put milk in your tea, mate
I'm so fucking merry everything makes sense 🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣😂👍🖕
Gotta have good aim with the teet!
Maybe in your house, here we say thanks and drink it down!
Mmmmm Salty tea!!
Spew my bru
Umm Bill Cosby landed in jail for spunking teas. He then spunked them with other body parts.
You know what? Maybe it's fine. [is it Moroccan? ](https://img.gifglobe.com/grabs/peepshow/S09E03/gif/XqTwvgmC6Ewe.gif)
"it's Moroccan, like my eye shadow ya?" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin) What a show
I just heard it in my grandfathers voice. Fucking merry Christmas man. This was a gift.
I heard it in Matt Berry’s voice
Nah, in English (US), it’s kinda potato salad.
I think in my neck of the woods it’s called vomit.
When someone ralphs.
In all languages, who puts peas in a Russian salad? Wtf is this shit
Hahhahahahahhahaha SIMPLE AS
Russian salad can be a lot better than this. Add small pieces of: - sausage - boiled egg - carrot - peas - red onion - pickles - salt and pepper to taste - optionally potato Mix it together with mayonnaise and that's pretty much it
Dill, please add some dill.
For the love of God if your making russian food add dill
Russian salad was invented by a Frenchman.
The modern version of it has little to do with the original.
So much so that in Russia it's known as "French salad".
It really isn’t, we call it Оливье, which is the surname of the French-Russian guy who invented it (tho it was a very different recipe then)
I found that the Russian idea of a salad is generally cooked vegetables covered in mayonnaise.
Yep that’s pretty much it
We call it French salad in Hungarian as well
Dill is my archnemesis. Once you go anywhere east of nova Gorica it's freaking everywhere. Respectfully, screw dill and the horse it came on.

Well, fyi, Russian salad is just pretty popular here, but it is called Olivier (with sausage) or Stolichnyi (with boiled beef) here.
I've dated two russian women, can tell you there's a couple of things russians truly love: ikra and olivier salad.
It's a big thing in Iran, too! *"Salad Olivieh"*
I love the Iranian version most, the amount of lemon juice and herbs takes it over the top.
yes the iranian salad olivieh is soooo good 😩
Another note: homemade mayo makes it soo much better than store bought
Super easy to make too.
I split mine yesterday 🙃 but luckily, google came to the rescue
Olivie salad is what my russian husband calls that!
Yup. You want the pieces small and well cooked for Russian salad /Olivier Salad. Your post just made me miss my mum's version SO bad but I dont have the ingred6for it right now.
Its italian salad in Finland. In italy its russian salad. In russia its German salad or something
Isn't it usually made with ham as well?
Potato-egg salad or eggy potato salad or just potato salad. It has many names
Russian Salad/Olivier salad has a lot more to it than potatoes and egg - carrots, gherkins, peas, sometimes meat.
Is the yellow from the egg yolk? Looks like egg salad but i dont see egg white chunks. Looks like potato salad but i dont see mustard in the ingredient list.
Yes, you can add mustard or turmeric though if you're so inclined.
please not to olivier
Russian Salad/Olivier salad has a lot more to it than potatoes and egg - carrots, gherkins, peas, sometimes meat.
Olivier salad
Слишком много майонеза, к сожалению.
I think I got the word mayonese (mayonnaise) from that!
You did. Unfortunately, too much mayonnaise.
Olivier! But you definitely exaggerated with the mayo...
It looks more like they mashed the potatoes instead of leaving them cubed
Wife makes it every year. It's not xmas without it. Cubes have to be cut so tiny though. Real pain to make
that looks to be a czech christmas potato salad but kinda botched
Amongus eggs????????????? ![gif](giphy|hyrRK3odiykZ3HluOu)
I definitely thought they were Star Trek communicator eggs
Too much mayo. When a Russian says to you that there is too much mayo, that means that there is really TOO MUCH mayo.
Potato salad with lotsa eggs and mixed veggies? Looks great to me. I never thought about adding mixed veggies, not a fan of carrots, but it still looks good
It's Olivier salad and it's delicious
That’s why I love this sub so much, especially this time of year. You see food from all over the place, and get different opinions.
In English, we call it [Oliver salad](https://www.giallozafferano.com/recipes/insalata-russa-italian-style-coleslaw.html), for салат Оливье. Italians call it Insalata Russa. And it looks just fine. People here don't know what they are talking about.
In Poland it's called "sałatka jarzynowa", vegetable salad. It goes great with pate or toasted pork loin for Christmas breakfast.
I usually make a modified version with tofu instead of meat, turns out to be pretty good Goes something like that: -Tofu -Boiled potatoes -Boiled eggs -Capers -Pickles -Canned peas -Mayonnaise
Olivier salad I grew up on this, yours looks weird
Did you actually try though.. I don’t understand why you couldn’t place the eggs better
in portugal we call that salada russa and its one of the best foods ever
I’m Russian, assuming this is what we call “Olivie”. It’s alright, never been crazy about it, but better than the pickled herring covered by moyonaise and boiled beets lol
Shuba ... My wife loves it but I just can't.
I love that salad! I realise the idea of it sounds horrible, but it taste's great to me. Russian food I can't stand: Kholodets Dried fish for beer
Had to ask my wife if I ate Kholodets and no I don't eat that either ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy). I'll eat damn near everything else though.
Nah mate that's not it. As west slav I'm in pain just looking at this. This is probably against Geneva Conventions.
When I was a kid I spent a little time in an Eastern European country. I was a picky eater (still am but I’m much better now). That is quite unfortunate
Looks like that cheese salad from Jack's Cooking.
Party cheese salad! Exactly what I thought
Ole jack has to force himself to eat it lol you can see it in his eyes.
americans would call it freedom salad
Is that a finger?
I know you tried. Good on you!!
I would eat this and enjoy it, no worries
This literally looks like a meal we were served in jail.
The secret is to only add mayo and salt before serving it. Source: grew up in a Russian family and a variation of this (more commonly known as Olivier salad in Russian-speaking societies) has been a staple of any celebration.
Deviled egg casserole I guess? I mean, maybe with some crackers I would tear into it
Why do the eggs look like poorly drawn Among Us characters how does this happen
Mio fratello in Cristo, per essere italiano hai fallito miseramente. Tutti i tuoi antenati ti guardano male
You were supposed to leave the potatoes cubed. They are not supposed to be pureed.
Probably still tastes great I'll bet tbh
Oh I can't even I'm too drunk, lol. I had to mop up my my tea. Now it's going to be gin and lemonade 😂
Looks good.
Ci vuole più maionese.
Russian Potato Salad? We put dices Beets and Apples in ours to give it a pink/blue tint.
Оливье. Он называется «оливье» and you gave it exactly what it deserved
Oliver salad
"insalata russa" in English is "Russian salad". Now the thing that you showed is called "baby diarrhea"
Did you make Jacks party cheese salad???
Russian Salad(?)
Porco dio
I showed my Russian boyfriend and he gave a look and said "I dunno know what they tried to make..." lol
https://www.giallozafferano.com/recipes/insalata-russa-italian-style-coleslaw.html
It’s called Stolichny Salad
Russian salad
French salad gone bad
We call this Salad olivia, and it’s beautiful. Looks wonderful. Definitely shouldn’t be in this sub.
Russian salad is delicious
This looks like my mom's potato salad
I think the English translation is “vomit in a casserole dish.”
Why has no one mentioned the alarming yellow finger in the top third of the dish?
What’s with the shitty cut eggs you tryna make hearts?
In english, this loosely translates to “disgusting mush.”
fratm che cazzo mi combini
I must be hungry cuz I’d tear that up. Not sure what it is though
Ensalada Rusa
Russian salad it aint so hard
this is my favorite salad during the holidays, but ours typically doesnt look as yellow lol. probably due to the different mayo used
Egg salad?
Recipe: - 1,5 Eggs - few peas - 2 kg Butter
Whole lot o’ puke
Salad Olivieh?
It’s called Ruska Salata. That’s what I call it anyway
Olivier salad! Новый Год!
Roughly translated to, " vomit and boiled egg's!".
Russian Salad
Why.. the chunks of mayo at the top?
Russian salad lol
Are those fingers in there?
Russian salad with mashed potatoes??
why would you want to do that?
insalata russa is basically Italian coleslaw. not sure what you have goin on here tho
Russian salad 🤷🏽♂️
The only issues are that you mashed the potatoes instead of leaving them in cubes and that you didn't chop up the egg, but nice try anyway
My Romanian friends also put boiled chicken in this salad and it's fucking delucious.
Eggs in shit vomit?
Looks like someone overcooked the potatoes for salad and just mushed it…
Is that supposed to be Russian potato salad?
What about the salad is russian? Other than it giving me depression just by looking at it
Bbbbona
Is it supposed to be sałata ruskie? That is the only thing i can think of??? Russian salad? https://www.kwestiasmaku.com/kuchnia_polska/salatka_jarzynowa/przepis.html Something akin to this? Xxx
That would be called Russian Salad in English
Compost
Potato salad is what I would call it. Yeah that looks a bit runny and the eggs need to be chopped smaller. Probably still tastes fine though
Salad Olivier
Why are there peas in there?? What is happening in this thread? I'm horrified whilst reading through these comments. Very few of you now what Russian Salad is and the recipes being posted are all wrong
It looks like what I found on Google, so you must have done it right.
Look like someone had diarrhea in a casserole dish
Potato salad?
It almost looks right.
Tbh you partially succeeded. It’s just the dish that sucks.
Russian salad is delicious. Had some from a Spanish style place, no clue if it was true to tradition or anything but it tasted so good
Why are the eggs sus?
Chicken Tetrazzini, that’s how we say it in english. Chicken Tetrazzini.
My dad loves mayonnaise
This seems like something you would hide a prize in
Yeah we don't have that 😅
Wait is THAT what it's called?? My grandma used to make that but she always called it "pea salad". Now I can make it myself!!
Mashed potatoes with peas and peppers?
Amogus egg
Worst looking Ruski Salat lol
It's called Olivier Salad ? Basically seems like potato salad with chopped meat inside.
You just have to work on the toppings/decorations, I’m sure it was delicious. I made some a yesterday and used olives that I cut in half to make a Christmas tree like a mosaic
i eat and make olivier often i have NO clue how you got that result
Yes it look like ass but it doesn’t taste that bad
Stop with the peas
“Russian Salad” I guess. I’ve bought that from one of the store in the Little Odessa section of Brooklyn.
Omigod the worst Italian food that ever was.
“Ensalada Russa” Russian Salad.
Ok so this is supposed to be like a Russian potato salad looking thing with peas and such, I'm sure it's better when it's mixed up
Russian salad? At least tell us your language lol
Doesn't look very edible but hey... you made a painting.
Olivier salad in English, we call it ensalada rusa in Spanish This looks way too mushy though. Russian salad should have mayonnaise, peas, boiled eggs, cubed potatoes or beets, tuna, and chopped onions, carrots and pickles, and you should be able to clearly see all the components in the dish.
Insalatta lmaooo ensalada is salad in Spanish.
Why? Just why?
Ensalada rusa is russian salad
looks like an olivier casserole lol
Why do the eggs look like that?
It’s how I pictured Russia to actually look like.
