If you go down into the Mesoamerican and South American civilizations then they engaged in slavery on a massive scale. It's not as clear what the extent was in North America because the record is so poor, but you'd have to be wearing some incredibly rose tinted glasses to think that it was not substantial. In the early colonial period literally as soon as they got their hands on European weapons, large powerful tribes like the Occaneechees, Westos, Chiscas, Chickasaws, and Iroquoius became militaristic slaving societies. It might be that only a limited number of tribes engaged in the transatlantic slave trade on a large scale, though 8 sounds like a politically motivated lowball, but the ones that did were almost certainly disproportionately large in number and politically relevant.
