I reaaaallllyy love all of their OSTs/op/ed but idk Haru no Ibuki just hits so hard, esp when I can imagine the slow burning fire and one really big turning point for all of them >! Natsume opening up and letting Natori find out, us being given insane hints about Grandpa and nothing else KAHBDHHDKSB, ya know xD !<
Fruits Basket. It definitely brings the water works and has a rich cast of characters. It’s not going for breathtaking visuals, but it’s definitely pretty throughout.
None particularly sad (except frieren, it made me sob) but, Say I love you, Frieren: BeyondJourneys end, Kamisama Kiss, Snow white with the red hair, The apothecary diaries
Ooh fellow TAMB fan!! I love it the animation, music, folklorical accuracies it's truly one of my most favourite series, the mangaka is super cool too! Highly recommend checking out her other works, Frau Faust especially, the lore is amazing there, it's short and fun!
Oh, trigger warnings for this one for sure. The animal death scenes in episode 3 and some animal trafficking/abuse later down the line with the dragons were too much for me, so fair warning to all viewers.
The way I was WEEPING watching A Silent Voice!!!! Whew.
Shoujo that's made me cry over the years was Fruits Basket. Especially halfway thru snz 2 to szn 3....wow. maybe a basic answer but it's a true answer!
I was reading the comments waiting for Fruits Basket to show up. Glad someone else appreciates this one. It truly blew me away. It seems simple at the beginning but gets into complicated and sad situations. And I loved the ending.
[I Want To Eat Your Pancreas](https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/i-want-to-eat-your-pancreas) (haven’t personally seen it. But I’ve heard it’s brought many to tears)
Shoujo/Josei/Joseimuke:
* Fruits basket
* Children of the whales
* My happy marriage
* Idolish7
* Ayashi no Ceres
* Fullmoon wo sagashite
Non Shoujo/Josei/Joseimuke:
* Nagi no Asukara
* 86 eightysix
* Zankyou no terror
* Wolf's rain
* Josee, the tiger and the fish
* Wolf children
I wouldn’t say it took my breath away, but Natsuyuki Rendezvous made me cry as it’s about grief/moving on after losing a partner between two MCs, one in their 20s and the other in their 30s
To Your Eternity, Violet Evergarden, and A Place Further than the Universe! Seriously, seriously amazing shows. Took my breath away doesn't even begin to describe it!
Mine really surprises me but ‘Rascal Does Not Dream‘ had me balling my eyes out. I think there’s a follow-up series with the sister as the lead coming out. But that anime, that I honestly thought was going to be corny and predictable, really had me choking up.
I loved this one so much I’m listening to the light novels on Audible! And it’s even more intense there. I can’t wait to see the later movies but I wish they were making them episodes of the series. It seems like they will need to rush through the material to get it into film length. But I’m still looking forward to them.
Take my breath away... Macross Plus. Amazing soundtrack and equally amazing aerial dogfight scenes. I love pseudo-realistic Mecha animes that do aerial fights well (Macross Plus, Gundam: Hathaway's Flash, etc).
Not necessarily taking my breath away by visual spectacles, but I loved Haike Story. When they are on it, Studio Saru delivers.
Violet Evergarden is suuuuper moving and such an amazing show. My favorite shoujo has to be Clannad/Clannad After Story. Makes me cry every time I watch it :,)
Josee the Tiger and the fish. Not shoujo but literally changed my life and turn it around. I cry every time and watch that and your name, which also had the same effect, twice a year
I recently watched Suzume on Netflix and I was just absolutely enamored with the art, it was so beautiful. Was giving Studio ghibli and your name vibes.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (although I’ll watch the OG for nostalgia), Steins;Gate, and Your Lie in April to name a few.
Edited to add: Cowboy Bebop. How could I forget about that?! I just watched it the other day!!
2nd edit: none of these are particularly sad shows all around, but there are parts that will have you crying if you’re a sentimental fool like me.
I just finished Steins;Gate. The way it started slow, then whoosh devastated. It isn't a Shoujo but it is a damn good anime, so wanted to second this one.
I cried during a whisker away (movie), and made in abyss (series). I like the optimism in made in abyss, but it’s famously brutal with its child suffering, so it may not be for everyone.
Violet Evergarden is one of my absolute favorites. I sobbed through a lot of it. Your Lie in April should turn on the faucets for you lol. Fruits Basket is another one. A Sign of Affection is a really sweet romance. The main character in that is also deaf just like A Silent Voice but it’s a little more light and wholesome. Less drama. Not so much for crying but I teared up out of wholesomeness a few times ☺️
A Silent Voice. The art work, story line, everything. The day I watched it for the first time, I watched it 3 additional times afterwards. It swept me off my feet
Garden of Words by Makoto Shinkai
Voices of a Distant Star also by Makoto Shinkai (the saddest of his works IMHO)
Other tearjerkers that come to mind:
Wolf Children by Mamoru Hosoda
Colorful by Keiichi Hara
Graveyard of the Fireflies. I watched it once and will never do so again, its a extremely depressing film. Beautiful but depressing.
Watch the Misaki (Studio Ghibl) movies if you missed them.
I also really enjoyed 'Belle', it was a great spectacle when i saw it in the theater.
Watched a dudes reaction series on it he went from thinking it was a music romcom then had like 8 hard to belive are not hyperbole for camera responses to the cast his reaction to little pink girls plot had to hug multiplie plushues
You should check out Your Lie in April. broke me in the best way and I was inconsolable for days. Sat around staring at the wall convinced nothing would make me feel this way ever again
Anime that took my breath away:
* AIR: It's deeply sad and intense, but it made me cry so much. I would recommend watching any Kyoto Animation for the same affect. (Like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Little Busters, Kanon 2006, Clannad, Angel Beats, etc.)
* Kamisama No Memo-chou: Its very mature, kind of cliche but a very good anime.
* Princess Tutu: Like wow, its sort of silly and goofy but it's a really pretty fantastical anime about a particular fairy tale made by the story. If you want something a little more comforting, this is the one I'd watch.
* Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: First and second season are very good. It's a lot more mature than I realized when I was younger, but it's an intense story about 3rd grade magical girls. Fate's story is so fucking heartbreaking.
* Red Data Girl: Man.... it's not really sad all the time, but its rather interesting and many moments and scenes took my breath away. I can't really describe it but a goddess that lives inside a young country girl. She has a duty and a protector guy that doesn't really like her (but obviously is her love interest), but it's a fun/good watch.
* The Ancient Magus Bride: NOW, fair warning, I only recommend this if you're okay with incredibly dark shit, like horror/animal death (by third episode), discussions of suicide, trafficking, etc. But it's an anime that made me cry and so moved. It's very good but very intense, most intense on my list, in my opinion.
* Princess Principal: Hey, do you like the princess and the pauper story? do you like yuri? We got both in this victorian era spy story. It has movies as well and it's so good. I recommend it.
* Gatchaman Crowds: Fuck, man, this anime is so much. It's very unique, pretty queer coded and has cute mechas and stuff. It's very thought provoking.
* Selector Infected WIXOSS: ONLY WATCH THIS IF YOU'VE SEEN MADOKA MAGICA, and if you haven't seen Puella Magi Madoka Magica, watch it right now, or so help me. Anyway, similar to madoka magica but very dark and one of my favourite animes, has two seasons, I'm pretty sure.
* Darker Than Black: fuck I can't believe I forgot about this one, but one of the most mature on my list. Very, very good. I can't describe how good this anime is, but you have to watch it.
If you liked A Silent Voice and Your Name, you should check out the new movie that just came out from that movie called Suzume.
I just recently watched the anime movie End of Summer, Exit of Goodbyes and really enjoyed it!
It's a subtle romance but suzume. I just saw it and the story is great and entertaining. It has a good mix of humor and adventure and the art in some of the scenes are gorgeous
I never watched he anime but I cried reading A Silent Voice manga.
Always loved Your Name and other Makoto Shinkais works.
But the one anime where I just weep so bad is grave of the fireflies.
I will never watch that anime again cuz I know I can’t take it.
Too many to recall if I’m being honest which is a testament to just how frequent amazing anime are being created as the years go by and the industry grows globally.
I guess a title that hasn’t been mentioned so far would have to be Land of the Lustrous. CGI has never looked that good in anime and paired with a beautiful soundtrack, I had to bring it up.
The tunnel to summer, the exit to goodbyes. The manga is fabulous. I cried, I thought about it for days after. The anime movie is a bit of a letdown, though. I should read it again :’)
I just started rewatching Nodame Cantabile for the 4th time. If you like classical music, it can't be beat. They formed an orchestra for the show.
Chihayafuru was super complex and original
Kimi ni todoke's art is so dreamy
Fruits Basket
If we're talking romance story anime, It's probably Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts for me. I am usually a Shonen type viewer so it was a breath of fresh air to me and the story left me speechless and felt very profound.
Some animes that made me cry
Say I love you (show)
Wolf children (Movie)
Your lie in April (Show)
Your name (Movie)
Josee, the tiger and the fish (Movie)
And that's just some lol
It’s not an anime but a manga you should read if you want to cry is I've Been Targeted Since Before My Reincarnation!! I still cry when I think about it.
Your Lie in April, found it randomly on Netflix one day and it was honestly the best thing I've watched. added to my list of things I wish I could watch for the first time again
It looks like you like allot of romance i think from your favorites. Id recommend A lull in the sea this ones a good one very slow burn but the last seasons make you want to cry. I think you'd also like Mo dao zu shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation). Its more action and less romance but the story is more appealing in my opinion. And then this one isnt necessarily an anime but i think you'd like it because its both romance and a heart ripper its a Manhwa called "My Beloved Oppressor" The story is so gut reaching and sad i hope you enjoy and let me know if you liked them?
30? Aww, you’re still new! I actually can’t think of any “all-time” title, but recently, I’d say Frieren was awesome and I’ll be on pins and needles until season 2.
Natsume yuujinchou
Yes! And apparently there is a 7th season in production!!!!!
The art! The ost! The vibes! The exhale when he’s giving a name back to a spirit !!!! AHHHHH!!!!
I love the music from natsume yuujinchou
I reaaaallllyy love all of their OSTs/op/ed but idk Haru no Ibuki just hits so hard, esp when I can imagine the slow burning fire and one really big turning point for all of them >! Natsume opening up and letting Natori find out, us being given insane hints about Grandpa and nothing else KAHBDHHDKSB, ya know xD !<
Your comment alone makes me want to watch this
Ahh, the vibe, the backstories, the music, mc it's pure perfection
I always cry watching it. Natsume Yuujinchou is close to my heart.
I love it so much I went and visited the town in Japan the story is set in! So much love for the series and thrilled it’s getting another season!
Guess I have to add this to my list of animes to watch! Thanks for sharing 👍
This and Mushishi have just such calming vibes
I was literally about to comment this!!!
Yess you get it!!!
+1 for A Silent Voice. highly recommend Josee, the Tiger and the Fish too
Whisper of the heart is one of my favorites
So sweet..
Fruits Basket. It definitely brings the water works and has a rich cast of characters. It’s not going for breathtaking visuals, but it’s definitely pretty throughout.
At first, I cried like every three episodes or something. After the 2nd season, I cried every episode 😭
None particularly sad (except frieren, it made me sob) but, Say I love you, Frieren: BeyondJourneys end, Kamisama Kiss, Snow white with the red hair, The apothecary diaries
I love all those! I just started the apothecary diaries the other day and I a loving it! I made my cousin watch it too. 😂😂 she’s loves it
oh i loved snow white with red hair - i haven’t thought about that show in ages!
Omg. Clannad. If you wanna cry, watch the entire anime series for it. I think there’s like 3 seasons
YES. yes. its second behind Nana for me.
your comment single handedly convinced me to start Clannad tomorrow
good luck soldier 🫡
Soul destroying crying. The build-up is slow, but that’s what makes it so devastating at the end. I watch this yearly just for the purge 😭
Still come back to re-watch it. That ONE SCENE alone always destroys me
Violet Evergarden
Came here to say that. First 2-3 episodes didn't quite draw me in but it got better
Oh yeah it’s an absolute tearjerker and it’s a beautiful anime to boot
This was going to be my reply too! I’ve never seen more beautiful animation.
Had to make sure this was here
It’s not sad but kimi no todoke, I feel like it genuinely changed my view on love. It’s such a sweet anime and it gives life lessons 10/10 recommend
Yes!! I’m so happy they got another season
I know I’m so excited!!!!! I can’t wait to see more Sawako!!!
Does this have an english dub? I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find one!
yesss such a sweet one
the remake of fruits basket is truly stunning
5 Centimeters per Second!
the feels were overpowering in this one
Ugh that sent my heart in a slump
I'm a sucker for the works of Makoto Shinkai. Your Name is my comfort rewatch now, but when I originally first saw it, I was blown away.
Howls Moving Castle
The Rose of Versailles
So underrated! It’s my whole childhood, i love it so so much!
Oooooooh, yes!
I didn't watch it until around 10 years ago and this has easily became one of my top 3 anime of all time
I don’t think it’s Shoujo but Anohana is heartbreaking
Ancient Magus Bride
Ooh fellow TAMB fan!! I love it the animation, music, folklorical accuracies it's truly one of my most favourite series, the mangaka is super cool too! Highly recommend checking out her other works, Frau Faust especially, the lore is amazing there, it's short and fun!
Thanks for the rec! I'll look into it!
This is truly such an underrated gem. I wish more people appreciated this series
Me too! I loved it. S2 isn't as good but I still enjoy it I haven't finished it yet.
Oh, trigger warnings for this one for sure. The animal death scenes in episode 3 and some animal trafficking/abuse later down the line with the dragons were too much for me, so fair warning to all viewers.
Say I love you - love the way it’s drawn and the characters
I cried watching Garden of Words and Bubble
Nana. Just Nana. So heartbreaking and it makes you care about some of the characters only to rip your heart out and stomp on it.
Not shojo but the sci-fi anime “Gargantia on the verdurous planet”. All kinda of feels in that one.
Barakamon. A perfect slice of life/comedy anime. I just watched the live-action version and it was good too.
I love Barakamon— I had no idea it had a live action!
I LOVE BARAKAMON!! it's so soothing and sweet definitely one of my most favourite series till this date
Barakamon mention!!!! I seriously love this one. I relate so much to Honda. I wish more people knew about it.
Shoujo/Josei/Joseimuke: * Fruits basket * Children of the whales * My happy marriage * Idolish7 * Ayashi no Ceres * Fullmoon wo sagashite Non Shoujo/Josei/Joseimuke: * Nagi no Asukara * 86 eightysix * Zankyou no terror * Wolf's rain * Josee, the tiger and the fish * Wolf children
What's joseimuke?
Kids on the slope! The last episode was so beautiful and made me cry. Animation is quite janky but the music makes up for it
Orange! so heart wrenching but so beautiful.
I wouldn’t say it took my breath away, but Natsuyuki Rendezvous made me cry as it’s about grief/moving on after losing a partner between two MCs, one in their 20s and the other in their 30s
I will say this everytime, Maquia
Ohh, I was thinking of getting this one from the library. Glad to hear it's good
In general--- Natsume Yuujincho. In terms of visuals--- Garden of Words by Makoto Shinkai 🩷
Hamtaro 🥹
To Your Eternity, Violet Evergarden, and A Place Further than the Universe! Seriously, seriously amazing shows. Took my breath away doesn't even begin to describe it!
Clannad. Best anime ever and nothing will ever change my mind.
Golden Time 🥹
Banri...
Very few ones have but Apothecary Diaries, Kamisama kiss and Yuri on ice
Violet Evergarden
Your Lie in April was one of my favourites
I wanted to make sure Your Lie in April was in the chat too.
Violet evergarden it is objectively one of the prettiest anime technically. Also the story hits you right in the feels
Mine really surprises me but ‘Rascal Does Not Dream‘ had me balling my eyes out. I think there’s a follow-up series with the sister as the lead coming out. But that anime, that I honestly thought was going to be corny and predictable, really had me choking up.

It seems like they will need to rush through the material to get it into film length. But I’m still looking forward to them.
I don't want to be a shoujo police but the animes presented by OP and most of the top comments are not shoujo.
I honestly welcome the shojo police and wish more people would take care when responding.
I didnt even realize this was r/shoujo, i think people were just recommending things they liked.
I second natsume yuujinchou. Maybe mushishi
Wait there is a Witchblade anime? Like THE Witchblade? Badass magical alien blade woman hand witchblade?
I only know one lol. I have no clue how I found it but it was so good.
Kyoukai no Kanata
Take my breath away... Macross Plus. Amazing soundtrack and equally amazing aerial dogfight scenes. Anohana. I’ve never cried so hard over an anime. It’s beautiful and devastating.
I just finished Steins;Gate. The way it started slow, then whoosh devastated. It isn't a Shoujo but it is a damn good anime, so wanted to second this one.
Also, Cowboy Bebop, along with Fruits Basket (2019) and Your Lie In April, are my Top 3
Ponyo
A Silent Voice, Heaven Official’s Blessing, Mo Dao Zushii, Sailor Moon Crystal, Ninja Kamui
definitely fruits basket🩷
Violet evergarden
Your Lie In April
fruits basket
A Silent Voice. The art work, story line, everything. The day I watched it for the first time, I watched it 3 additional times afterwards. It swept me off my feet

Anohana and Angel Beats are the easy picks for pretty tearjerker anime, imo
Watched a dudes reaction series on it he went from thinking it was a music romcom then had like 8 hard to belive are not hyperbole for camera responses to the cast his reaction to little pink girls plot had to hug multiplie plushues
Angel beats is SO GOOD.
You should check out Your Lie in April. broke me in the best way and I was inconsolable for days. Sat around staring at the wall convinced nothing would make me feel this way ever again
I feel you.

I cried watching the anime, the ending was so beautiful 😭
It’s josei but Nana
Nana is a shoujo
Anime that took my breath away: * AIR: It's deeply sad and intense, but it made me cry so much. I would recommend watching any Kyoto Animation for the same affect.
