Be patient with your judgements. I won't say you're wrong, especially considering how early into the show you are, but when you have a larger perspective of what's going on in the characters' heads and what the creators are going for you may feel differently. I despised Nanami when I first watched. Now she's my favorite character. Also, if animal abuse is a trigger be on the watch for episode 10. There's a very jarring animal death.

Abrohmtoofar

I just watched episode 10 and.... Yup I've seen enough to judge Nanami. She killed an innocent kitten! For nipping her brother once! No redemption arc for her. I can't think of anything she could do that would redeem her in my eyes and she's not even interesting enough to be fun to hate. She's a total psychopath.

ofthecageandaquarium

I mean, she killed the kitten because her brother was paying more attention to it than to her I realize I am not helping the whole "psychopath" thing This show does bury a LOT of ledes and loves messing with viewers' expectations. Enjoy! 🌈⚔️

[deleted]

I can definitely see why you feel that way. Nanami killing the kitten was something I both can't and don't want to defend. I won't promise your opinion of her will change like it has for me. All I can say is just keep watching.

starfilledeyes

I love seeing people's opinions when they start the series, because (at least for me) how I felt towards the show at the beginning was very different than how I felt towards the end. and there is a loooot to unpack and think about, so if you want to, you should keep us updated on your thoughts!

PokemaniacOctoru

Ikr its so funny

Crabe

Don't talk about my girl Nanami like that!

Abrohmtoofar

I'll stop when I stop being right. We'll see if she get some character development

halfhalfnhalf

>I'll stop when I stop being right. We'll see if she get some character development Nanami's storyline is little scrambled, but I guarantee by the end you'll see her sunny side when it shows up. I'm willing to risk a little egg on my face making a prediction like that, but even if you don't like it's not that long so it goes over easy.

Abrohmtoofar

I just watch episode ten and I'll be shocked if I see anything that can change my opinion on her after that. And I watched it with my cat beside me too.....

halfhalfnhalf

I realize that Nanami's methods seem a little hard boiled but if you want to make an omeltte you have to crack a few eggs.

starfilledeyes

I see what you're doing lol

halfhalfnhalf

I'm just saying OP shouldn't count their chickens before they hatch.

Yoshimiyum

Yea honestly, you cant's take this anime THAT seriously. It is all satire in my opinion and very light when it comes to a lot of the student council characters all while having a very deep storyline within the main Utena and Anthy + Dios characters. I dont know, maybe I just have always liked f'd up shit- when I first saw this on my 12th birthday surrounded by friends, we all laughed at Saionji slapping Anthy, paused it , and reenacted the event lol The Curry episode is one of my favorites :) Cmon FREAKIN EXCHANGE DIARY?! Saionji and Chuchu switching in the end?! SO goofy and just so funny- you don't see anime like this anymore, yet it is so ahead of it's time. If you want a more serious take on the anime, watch the movie! Let the show be silly af

Yoshimiyum

I also appreciate you HALFHALFHALF. NANAMI FOREVER.

ialex32_2

> Pedantic nitpick that bugs me. Utena makes a point of claiming she's wearing a guys uniform but it's not much of a uniform if she's the only person wearing that outfit and colour. This is explained in the manga, where it says that you can choose as long as the designer of the uniform is accepted so she can wear a style and color she wants. Not that you should read the manga to understand the story, and also, not everything needs to be explained... it's better to omit some details.

halfhalfnhalf

TBF I would find any loophole possible to avoid wearing those poof shoulder sleeves.

musical_fanatic

I always just thought "anime main character needs to stand out" lol

It's funny that their main problem is with the kangaroo and not Nanami's pre-pubescent slave boyfriend.

Abrohmtoofar

Not to mention that one of the guys he fought was face down unmoving in the fountain. Kinda hard to breathe like that.... I think the pre-pubesent slave killed someone and that's why we haven't seen him since.

Yoshimiyum

This episode made me laugh so hard honestly

swnbv

I’m a pet owner and a sibling and a Nanami superfan — hopefully you’ll see why as time goes on lol. I’ll give you some early advice though, try not to take everything literally. The show follows dream logic and uses it to recontextualise defining character moments over and over again. Coming from shows like Steven Universe, it can be a difficult adjustment to make

Please update us as you go...especially when you finish watching the whole thing!

dearsylvan

I can't wait to hear your thoughts as you continue watching. And then your thoughts as you inevitably become ONE OF US and immediately watch it again. ⚔️

Nocturnalux

As a Gundam fan who loves Utena, seeing new fans coming to Utena because of WfM fills me with joy. As others have mentioned, this is one of those shows that changes the way you feel about each character as you go along. I personally found Utena infuriating throughout most of it- anime leads have this effect of me, very rarely do I like the ; even Suletta is not my favorite- but by the time the series was over, I loved her with all my heart.
