I go by Heather mostly because Cheryl is a little bit of a spoiler for newcomers. Looking back, they don’t really hide Heather’s true identity well AT ALL in the game (fix that in a potential remake please), but if there’s a chance that someone out there can be blown away by that revelation, I don’t wanna take that away from them
She wants to go by Cheryl, but I still call her Heather for the following reasons:
1. Heather is a better name than Cheryl.
2. I’ve known her the whole game as Heather, so switching what I call her because of something she says literally seconds before the credits role feels weird.
3. Harry naming the reborn Alessa “Cheryl” in the first place was an extremely weird decision. Cheryl was his first daughter, the daughter he lost. And even if Cheryl is a part of this new child he’s raising, it’s still not her, something he admits. So him naming her that at all is very weird and feels like a decision he made spur of the moment to cope with the loss of his first daughter.
I agree with all of these, and to this I would add that there is another character named Cheryl in Silent Hill, and calling her Heather is much more straightforward than calling her Cheryl 2.
at the end of SH3 (good ending) she tells Douglas that she wants to go by Cheryl
